Re: [Repeater-Builder] Source for custom made cables
I'm not entirely tongue in cheek when I ask whether you should be in charge of a repeater or installing one if you have not got the expertise to cut a bit of coax and fit a plug or socket. And if the spare 20 minutes is to much for some then that would explain the funny noises I often hear on two meters whilst traveling around. 73 de G4DAX (who is too old to allow political correctness to obscure the view!) - Original Message - From: russ [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Repeater-Builder@yahoogroups.com Sent: Friday, December 17, 2004 5:06 PM Subject: Re: [Repeater-Builder] Source for custom made cables yes but some don't have the time or maybe not the skill to do it. Re: [Repeater-Builder] Source for custom made cables
I think the point was mistaken here. I either have to change the connector on the receiver so that the cable goes directly to the receiver without using any connetors to change from one type of plug to another, or find a special cable with an RCA on one end and a Type N Male on the other. My objective is to never visit the repeater site once this machine is done. And if I have to, I don't want it to be becuase I used a cheap connector to tie in the reciever. The receiver is the GE MASTR ER41. I'd rather just change the connector to a type N connector, but would have to widdle a little on the internal copper casing to put it in place. Question: If I install the type N connector, and there is a solder point behind the inside, am I going to run into troubles. I hate to cut into it to find that I'm opening a can or worms for noise to get in? Re: [Repeater-Builder] Source for custom made cables
I don't know if you are really going to have a big problem with the MASTR RCA connector. I would make the cable up myself, RCA plugs are not that hard to put on. I use the MASTR ER41 receiver on my packet digi and have not had any problems with the receiver connector. If I really wanted to change it, I would use an SMA connector because it is small. Second choice might be a BNC, but I have found BNC connectors to get noisy after time. I had a home brew 220Mhz duplexer that used BNC connectors. I had to take the connectors off and on a few times a year to keep the noise down. 73, Joe, k1ike At 07:51 AM 12/18/2004, you wrote: I think the point was mistaken here. RE: [Repeater-Builder] Source for custom made cables
Mathew, just get the cables from a GE base. It will most likely have an so239 on it and replace it. I would not worry about using the RCA plug. GE had them on mastrII's for years. I will look to see if I can scrounge a spare cable. Anyone know of a good source for made up custom cables for repeater use. Or might someone have what I am looking for. I need a jumper about 3.5' that has an N Male connector on one end and an RCA connector on the other. This is for my receiver from the duplexer. GE used an RCA connector with a short center pin, unlike what you buy today. Make sure that, if you do get the long pin version, it doesn't short out on anything under the jack on the chassis. I need a jumper about 3.5' that has an N Male connector on one end and an RCA connector on the other. This is for my receiver from the duplexer. It is a mastr receiver, has a rca type connector on it. Or would it make more sense to change the connector on the receiver to a type N chassis mount. Just not real fond of the adapter I had to use to convert it. Thanks. Mathew W9MWQ Yahoo! Groups Links [EMAIL PROTECTED] __ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Mail - You care about security. Its not that they do not know how to install it correctly! They just do not want to take the time to do the job correctly! You didn't mention if the Mastr Pro RX is VHF or UHF. If it's UHF, you're probably already using a preamp ahead of it due to the high noise figure of the stock receiver. Another 1/2 dB of mismatch loss due to the RCA connector won't be noticable if it's downstream from the preamp. Bob NO6B Yahoo! RE: [Repeater-Builder] Source for custom made cables
Bob, You are on the same track as I am... I just think the ability to replace the cable with a readily available jumper would simplify things in case of a failure. Downtime can really hurt if it is a paying client in the emergency services arena. Say for instance, you are on vacation and the jumper gets damaged while your bestes buddy trusted tech is watching your accounts for you will he have a jumper in stock? Judging from the length of this thread, probably not. Now the client is ill due to down time in a critical application your spouse is ill due to having to cut the vacation short because you had to race home to make things all better. Standardized parts make life s much simpler. Five minutes on the bench to standardize things can save boatloads of grief later down the road!! As I am not terribly familiar with the specifics of this installation, this is only a suggestion... You might relocate the point of entry to a better location, using UG-141 hard-line and the hooded Type-N chassis connector. If flexibility is needed use the flexible variety of cable (the nomenclature escapes me at the moment). Like I said... just my 2 cents... YMMV. And one size certainly doesn't fit all. My standard disclaimer is here http://65.173.252.46/standard_disclaimer.htm Wonder what the impedance bump for an RCA connector looks like at say... 489MHz?? mike At 12:57 PM 12/17/2004 -0800, you wrote: At 12/17/2004 10:15 AM, you wrote: My 2 cents would be to replace the connector on the receiver adapterators are nothing more than an invitation for gremlins to sneak into your system... not to mention added impedance bumps... added losses... potential connection problems... etc... etc etc Normally I'd agree, but that RCA connector is kind of difficult to get at there may not be enough room for a different connector.
