That would make some interesting research. Honestly I like having my repeater controller do a beep at a lower audio level when someone un-keys. Low enough to be heard, but not be a nuisance. If someone is closer to the repeater you may not know if they've un-keyed until the repeater itself drops out. With a courtesy tone (as they're called now) it lets the other person know you've un-keyed and they can key up again. But I'll admit some of these beeps that the bubble packs and CBs have are really annoying. When the FCC stepped in, the movie set said "they are licensed" and pointed at the shop. **BOTH** were provided "show cause" letters and subsequently fined. Not the same situation as this, but close. And yes, it was a dealer that has a national presence... And on the original topic, note that IF the chief (himself, not the dept) gets a GMRS license, he can use his UHF radio on the LOWER FRS freqs (462., not the 467's) at 4W. Communications between GMRS and FRS units is legal on those channels.

Both. There was a "transmitter on" beep (that almost nobody heard), and there was a "transmitter off" beep that everyone heard - with about 100Hz difference in the two tone frequencies. Read this: <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quindar_tones> What it doesn't mention is that there was an audio notch filter that took out the beep from the audio fed to the actual transmitter.
