I'd generally push for XLR in most cases if there's space. Otherwise I'd
look for D-type (assuming it's for external use) or screw terminals
(internal use).

Again, I'm a little lost as to a use for it on an audio interface. Other
than specifically driving Ravenna/Livewire from hardware.

Now there's a question. It's specialist but being teamed up with a low cost
bit of kit. For reference, the Wolfson board for the Pi goes for up to £30.
I'd therefore expect the cost to be a bit north of that.

Marc.

Hi,

Yes XLRs fit fine on 1U but not with the Pi Underneath it. You
basically have this set up (ripped from IQ Audio's email):

1U ~ 40mm
5mm spacer under pi
2mm pi pcb
12mm spacer (to clear pi components)
2mm DAC Hat

Leaves: 19mm to fit XLR connectors.

I'm making a 1U device (not for Rivendell) that includes 4 XLR
connectors on a modified back panel. They fit just fine!

Parts from parts-express.com:

Item Number 092-0156, Amphenol AC3FDZB XLR "D" Flange Panel Mount
Connector Female
Item Number 092-0158, Amphenol AC3MMDZB XLR "D" Flange Panel Mount
Connector Male

The 1U case is from Athena Power, model RM-1U100DR22

Hope this helps!

I would suggest RJ-45 standard, with an optional ( extra cost ) break-out box
for most anything anyone might want, which would be the full size XLR's, or
 screw terminals, or.

StudioHub! See:

http://www.studiohub.com/PDF/PinoutGuidewithAdapters.pdf

This is what pretty much the entire broadcast equipment industry is moving to.

> • Access to GPIO Pins?

Euroblock connectors. Those pins will also need to be electrically isolated
—e.g. onto-isolators on the inputs and OCs/reed relays on the outputs. The
GPIO pins on a PI will tolerate 3.3vdc tops; you’ll blow up the device if you
expose it to more. Broadcast plants typically use a lot more (5 or even 12 or
24 vdc is not uncommon).

> • Access to USB?
> • Access to Network?

Both are absolutely necessary.

> • Anything else they haven't thought of?

PoE option (would power the PI as well).

A lot would depend on the mechanical details. Would this include some sort of
case, a naked PC board, something else?

Cheers!

I would prefer XLR or RJ45 for the Audio - definitely not Mini XLR

If it hase RCA plugs i would prefer 6.3mm jacks as most other devices
and patchpanels have these as well.

would be ok if they also produce/sell small breakout boards with XLR

not sure about that. For most purposes i wouldn't use it because the USB
Port instability of the Raspi is legendary...

balanced inputs! not sure if this works with the Raspberry but there
should be an I2S interface on the board somewhere...

It would also be ok to have seperate input and output boards because
most of the time i would need only one but not both on the same raspi.

something between 80 and 100 Euros would be ok for me/us.

Yes, but consider this picture:

https://www.adafruit.com/images/970x728/1761-03.jpg

If you mount the xlr on the audio board and then plug the pi and the audio
board together, the total package might be more than 1u.

If you wanted to do a 1u box however, it would not be unreasonable to have
the xlrs at the end of cable to mount to the back of the 1u box while the
pi and the audio card are mounted elsewhere in the box and not right where
the xlrs are located.

Or am I being dense here?
