Re: [RDD] Relocating shared folders

2019-09-25 Thread Alan Smith

Thank you again.

I'll give Xming a go since I am getting the impression that it is the
preferred method of log generation/maintenance these days from Windows
machines.

Since my current system is in production already, I'll experiment on
another machine.

It's not free, but it's cheap, and it's a one-time payment.

I haven't tried adding the new user to group 'rd' yet (I don't know
how to do it, I will research it). I hate that a lot of the
administrative functions that were available in the GUI on CentOS6
have been removed from the GUI in 7. :-(

Gnome 3 is evil. I've never understood what was the point in
developing it; no one I know has anything good to say about it.

MATE, which is available as an install option in Debian, is a clone of
Gnome 2, and seems to work very wel with Rivendell.

The CentOS 7 Rivendell standard install uses Xfce.

But my question is, will that really do the trick?  By adding user
'x' to group 'rd', user x will be able to access rd's home folder
(where the shares are located)? IE /home/rd/traffic_export

It should, but the folder and the files in it have to be group-writable.

Keep in mind guys Im still a Linux novice...

I considered Xming, but 1)  VNC just seemed easier for me, and 2) I
thought I read somewhere that *technically* Xming is NOT free...maybe
just a certain version?  Can't recall exactly now...

Back on the problem at hand:

I don't know why I had that loop when I had one user logged onto the
physical machine, and tried using that same account logging onto a
virtual desktop, but now that I think about it, it was on a vanilla
CentOS7 machine (not a Rivendell machine) so maybe it had something to
do with the default desktop (Gnome3 I think it is).

That led me to the creation of a new user.

I haven't tried adding the new user to group 'rd' yet (I don't know how
to do it, I will research it).  I hate that a lot of the administrative
functions that were available in the GUI on CentOS6 have been removed

What I do for Windows users is install Xming. I set it up so that

Rivendell machine.

Which folders do you mean?

I have VNC setup to access to real physical display.

As do most of the stations I deal with.

I also have a VNC service setup to access a virtual display/kb/mouse.

Do you mean a virtual desktop? I have one client that uses those, but only
because he installs Rivendell machines at affiliates of his network and
doesn't want the affiliates to see the Rivendell desktop.

Through experimentation I found I had to create a separate user to do
this.  Trying to connect to a virtual display with a user that is
already logged into the primary display created an infinite loop.

I have not had that experience.

Anyway, the purpose of this 2nd user is for clock and log generation and
maintenance.

We just connect with ssh -X and then run rdlogedit or rdlogmanager. VNC is
only necessary if you need to see the same destop that the live operator
sees.

The problem is, and I have posted this before, but it has become more of
an issue, is this other newly created user doesn't have permissions to
access the network shares located in rd's home folder.

Add the new user to the group 'rd' and change the folder and file
permissions accordingly.

Try adding your new user to the rd group and setting the group permissions on
the shares to rw.

The short version:

Would it upset Rivendell in any way if I relocated the network shared
folders to a world writable location?

This in on the script install of 2.19.3 I believe it is on CentOS7.

The longer version:

I know there are lots of ways to skin a cat, but this is how I prefer
to do it:

I have VNC setup to access to real physical display.

I also have a VNC service setup to access a virtual display/kb/mouse.
Through experimentation I found I had to create a separate user to do
this. Trying to connect to a virtual display with a user that is
already logged into the primary display created an infinite loop.

Anyway, the purpose of this 2nd user is for clock and log generation and
maintenance. Works wonderfully and in the background so it doesn't
interfere with the on-air staff. The problem is, and I have posted this
before, but it has become more of an issue, is this other newly created
user doesn't have permissions to access the network shares located in
rd's home folder. Rather that batting with trying to allow access to
those folders, I think it would be easier to just re-create them in a
different location, such as /var/shares perhaps.

I know this probably isn't the best way to do this, but with the Windows
ports going away, I looked at xming and vnc for remote access
capabilities, and well...vnc won out.

Thanks,

-Alan
