[RollTideFan] Brief article

2003-09-05 Thread Joel Perry
>From www.collegefootballnews.com

Shula in the Spotlight
In the first half of last week's game against South Florida, Alabama looked
like a team coached by a new-hire still learning the profession.
In the second half, as Bama engaged in the running of the Bulls right out of
Tuscaloosa, the Crimson Tide looked like a team coached by a guy worthy of
the Shula name.
Last year, Dennis Franchione gave an indication of the kind of coach he
was-namely, a damn good one-by busting out all over with a series of gutsy
and creative calls that engineered a stunning, stirring second half
comeback, a bold rally that came THISCLOSE to netting a mammoth win for the
Alabama program.
The eye-opening performance, by Franchione and his troops, came against
Oklahoma.
As it was, the narrow loss in Norman to the Sooners, while not giving the
Tide a total victory, still pointed Dixie's Football Pride to a season that,
sans probation, would have netted an SEC West championship. The bitter taste
of a defeat snatched from the jaws of victory, thanks to the last-minute
heroics of Renaldo Works, nevertheless gave the Tide the confidence they
could play with the big boys. The rest of their SEC campaign proved as much.
In the second half of last year's game against the Sooners, the Tide did
something few OU opponents ever manage to do: bounce off Sooner tackles.
Teddy Lehman, Derrick Strait, Brandon Everage, Tommie Harris, and the rest
of a normally stout defense were flatly outclassed in the second half, as a
combination of fatigue and clever change-of-pace "smoke draws" from
Franchione had the Sooners completely off balance. Shaud Williams went
around them, and Santonio Beard barreled through them, especially Lehman.
Oklahoma State and Texas A&M defeated the Sooners last year by throwing over
the top. Alabama, while not defeating Oklahoma, came very close by getting
buckets of yards after the first point of contact. Beard got dozens upon
dozens of second-effort yards against OU's linebackers and defensive backs,
the rarest of rare sights in Norman. Whether it was conditioning, having his
team mentally prepared, or using the brilliant smoke draws along with a fake
punt from all-world warrior Lane Bearden, Franchione outcoached Bob Stoops.
The game marked Alabama's re-arrival as a major player in college football
after the Mike Dubose downward spiral.
Now, as we shift to this year's rematch in Tuscaloosa, one has to wonder:
A) Will Stoops get outcoached against Bama a second straight time?
B) Will Bama be able to power the ball on the ground against a Sooner
defense that is one year older, tougher, and-one would presume-wiser?
C) Will Mike Shula be able to come close to what Franchione did, not only in
his first season, but in a first season that lacked the benefit of
self-recruiting or completely being able to preside over Spring ball?
D) Whereas Franchione ushered in a revival of Bama football, will all the
offseason distractions related to the ouster of Mike Price, AND the
attendant lack of preparation time, AND his personal inexperience as a head
coach, AND the pressure of the cauldron-like situation known as the Bama job
(no matter what happens in strip clubs, or which objects fly through a
coach's window), cause Mike Shula to preside over the regression of Bama
football?
It's not fair to make any verdicts whatsoever about Shula. However, it's
entirely reasonable to ask questions about his ability to cut it at this
level. Going up against an angry, chastened and possibly humbled
Stoops-relative to the Alabama/Oklahoma series-along with a defense that
will be equally revenge-minded, puts Shula in a position where it will be
very difficult to succeed. One could say that all the pressure in this game
is on Oklahoma, given that Bama is on probation and, in that sense, has
nothing to lose.
However, considering the chip OU will have on its shoulder, and considering
as well the need for Shula to establish himself while sustaining the program
after a turbulent off-season, one could legitimately claim that Alabama has
a lot to lose in this game against a Sooner defense too hell-bent on revenge
to really feel any substantial sense of pressure.
It's not just a matter of going up against one of the very best college
football coaches around, it's doing so in week two.
It's not just figuring out a way to outclass one of the very best college
football defenses around, it's doing it a year after your predecessor-now in
College Station, Texas-did the deed incredibly well, and in Norman at that.
It's not just about sustaining the momentum of last year; it's about keeping
the Tide program strong in the eyes of the nation this year, so that, in a
first full winter of recruiting in 2003-04, Shula will be able to compete in
THAT area as well.
Will Mike Shula, in his first spotlight game with a storied program, be like
his dad, or like a dud? Will the postgame headline be "Roll Tide," or
"Rolled Tide"?
Will Shula follow in the footsteps of OU tormentor

2003-09-05 Thread TIDE1

"RAGHEAD EMISSARY"

An Arab diplomat visiting the US for the first time was being wined and
dined by the State Department.  The Grand Emir was unused to the salt
in American foods (french fries, cheeses, salami, anchovies)
and was constantly sending his man-servant Abdul to fetch him a glass of
water.

Time and again, Abdul would scamper off and return with a glass of
water, but then came the time when he returned empty-handed.

"Abdul, you son of an ugly camel, where is my water??"  demanded the
Grand Emir.

"A thousand pardons, Oh Illustrious One,"  stammered the wretched
Abdul, "white man sit on well."

work today. Besides, isn't there a pretty big game tomorrow in T-town?

A BIG game indeed! I'm starting to get a little nervous about it too.
Man o'man I hope Bama is ready to whip those Sooners. A mighty big game,
one that could really set us up to have a great season IMO.

BTW, there's also a pretty big high school game here in Decatur tonight.
#1 ranked Hoover comes to town to play the Red Raiders. I'm hoping we
don't get embarrassed to badly. Decatur has a good team this year but I
don't know if they're capable of hanging with the Bucs. I'm going to be
there to see the action and I'm looking forward to it.

there is not many to talk to here in my office since I am in in aub-ville; I
just sit back and quietly giggle at the USC game still so that helps some. I
don't want to say too much for fear that something would be said on Monday.
I think it's definitely going to be a game = scream loud for me; better yet,
you'll probably here me from Montevallo.

Re: [RollTideFan] okay

2003-09-05 Thread Rick Mc.
You can count on me screaming loud enough for both of us! I'm going to
the game with my son's girlfriend's dad. This is the first time he and I
have went to a game together. Not sure if he's a vocal fan or not and
not sure about the section he sits in, but there is no way in hell I can
ever attend a Bama game and just sit there and watch. I feel I haven't
done my duty as a fan if I still have a voice at the end of the game!

ROLL DAMN TIDE!! Let's go to T-town right now!!!

hmm. Here's an article from a couple days ago.

http://www.dfw.com/mld/dfw/sports/colleges/6680330.htm

Everage returns

Safety Brandon Everage is back in the secondary after serving his
one-game suspension for being charged with -- and acquitted of --
possession of a small amount of marijuana in February. OU will need his
experience against sophomore Alabama quarterback Brodie Croyle, who is
much more acquainted with the vertical passing game than Tyler Watts --
the QB the Sooners faced most of the time in last year's 37-27 victory.
[...]

I wonder if he's gonna play?

[RollTideFan] Lemme ax a question..

2003-09-05 Thread kurt rasmussen

Just suppose... You're on the quad tomorrow and you meet up with a nice
classy lifelong Sooner fan/couple/fambily. You take them on the tour,
filling them in, and showing them the sights of all the wonderful
traditions of BAMA football. I'm talking about being a good host and
showing them where the good bathrooms are and everything! As game time
approaches, you shake hands and head to the stadium..

When y'all get there, it turns out they're sitting next to you. Y'all
end up having a great time with each others, and BAMA pulls out a win. ..

When the game's over, are ya gonna holler "We just beat the Hell outta
you!" ?

Nope. Apparently this guy ran a stop sign on his way to board the bus to that airport
today in Norman. When he was stopped he
was found to have a fake Texas license and a bunch of other shit. He was arrested and
let out on $480-$500 bail (posted by a
-ahem- "family member"). He is supposedly making the trip but sitting out Saturday's
game now.

Now, whether or not Stoops has the morals and balls to really stick by his guns after
this second arrest remains to be seen.

2 arrests in 2 weeks. DAMN!

Well, this is a chance for Coach Stoops to set an example. I hope he does
the right thing.

Nope. Apparently this guy ran a stop sign on his way to board the bus to
that airport today in Norman. When he was stopped he
was found to have a fake Texas license and a bunch of other shit. He was
arrested and let out on $480-$500 bail (posted by a
-ahem- "family member"). He is supposedly making the trip but sitting out
Saturday's game now.

Now, whether or not Stoops has the morals and balls to really stick by his
guns after this second arrest remains to be seen.

2 arrests in 2 weeks. DAMN!

[RollTideFan] No.1 Sooners come to T-Town

2003-09-05 Thread kurt rasmussen
By: Daniel Rasmussen

There are two things that the Alabama
Crimson Tide players, coaches, and fans need to think about as they go
to bed tonight, with dreams of facing the number one team in the nation
inside a packed Bryant-Denny Stadium tomorrow evening.

Number one: Be realistic. Despite the fact that most Tide fans are
hoping for an upset, just remember: we are facing the number one team in
college football, with the number one defense, a widespread offense, and
a great coaching staff.

Bama likes to run, and Oklahoma likes to stop it. Bama also likes to
pass the ball, and the Sooners do a superior job of defending it.
Oklahoma is without a doubt the better team coming into tomorrow
evenings grudge match. But more people are wondering who will be the
better team after tomorrow night.

The second thing to consider: dont sell yourselves short. Alabama is a
great football team with an explosive offense, a balanced defense, and a
lot of talent.

ROTFLMAO! So true, Krut! The definition of Slef's "candy-ass".

watch the game from the Judicial Building steps in Montgomery? Something says the
