[RollTideFan] (Non) Football: North or South

2005-07-26 Thread Lizard Fish

SOUTHERN vs. NORTHERN FOOTBALL

Women's Accessories:

NORTH: ChapStick in back pocket and a $20 bill in the front pocket.

SOUTH: Louis Vuitton duffel with two lipsticks, waterproof mascara, and a
fifth of Captain Morgan/Crown. Money is not necessary -
that's what dates are for.

Stadium Size:

NORTH: College football stadiums hold 20,000 people.

SOUTH: High school football stadiums hold 20,000 people.

Campus Decor:

  NORTH: Statues of founding fathers.

SOUTH: Statues of Heisman trophy winners.

Homecoming Queen:

  NORTH: Also a physics major.

  SOUTH: Also Miss America.

Cheerleaders:

NORTH: If you are slightly coordinated, you make the varsity squad.

SOUTH: You begin cheer camp at age two, complete with ballet, dance,
gymnastic training.

Getting Tickets:

NORTH: 5 days before the game you walk into the ticket office on campus and
purchase tickets.

SOUTH: 5 months before the game you walk into the ticket office on campus
put name on the waiting list.

Friday Classes After a Thursday Night Game:

NORTH: Students and teachers not sure they're going to the game, because they
have classes on Friday.

SOUTH: Teachers cancel Friday classes because they don't want to see the few
hung-over students that might actually make it to
class.

Parking:

NORTH: An hour before game time, the University opens the campus for game
parking.

SOUTH: RVs sporting their school flags begin arriving on Wednesday for the
weekend festivities. The really faithful arrive on
Tuesday.

Game Day:

NORTH: A few students party in the dorm and watch ESPN on TV.

SOUTH: Every student wakes up, has a beer for breakfast, and rushes over to
where ESPN is broadcasting Game Day Live to get on
camera and wave to the idiots up north.

Tailgating:

NORTH: Raw meat on a grill, beer with lime in it, listening to local radio
station with truck tailgate down.

SOUTH: 30-foot custom pig-shaped smoker fires up at dawn. Cooking accompanied
by live performance by a band, who come over during
breaks and ask for a hit off bottle of bourbon.

Getting to the Stadium:

NORTH: You ask Where's the stadium? When you find it, you walk right in.

SOUTH: When you're near it, you'll hear it. On game day it becomes the
state's third largest city.

Concessions:

NORTH: Drinks served in a paper cup, filled to the top with soda.

SOUTH: Drinks served in a plastic cup with the home team's mascot on it,
filled less than halfway with soda, to ensure enough room
for Captain Morgan/Crown.

When National Anthem is Played:

NORTH: Stands are less than half full, and less than half of them stand up.

SOUTH: 100,000 fans, all standing, sing along in perfect four-part harmony.

The Smell in the Air After the First Score:

  NORTH: Nothing changes.

SOUTH: Fireworks, with a touch of Captain Morgan/Crown.

Commentary (Male):

  NORTH: Nice play.

SOUTH: Dammit, you slow sumbitch - tackle him and break his legs.

Commentary (Female):

NORTH: My, this certainly is a violent sport.

SOUTH: Dammit, you slow sumbitch - tackle him and break his legs.

Announcers:

  NORTH: Neutral and paid.

SOUTH: Announcer harmonizes with the crowd in the fight song, with a tear in
his eye because he is so proud of his team.

After the Game:

NORTH: The stadium is empty way before the game ends.

SOUTH: Another rack of ribs goes on the smoker. While somebody goes to the
nearest package store for more bourbon; planning begins
for next week's game.

[RollTideFan] [NON] Williams to report to Dolphins

2005-07-19 Thread Rick McMahan

Williams cleared to report Sunday to
Dolphins

By STEVEN WINE, AP Sports Writer
July 19, 2005
 MIAMI (AP) -- Miami
Dolphins running back Ricky Williams
has been cleared by
the NFL to report Sunday with the rest of the team for the start of
training
camp, a year and a day after he abruptly retired.

The league's 2002 rushing champion decided to seek reinstatement
after
sitting out last season. He still faces a four-game suspension at the
start of
the season for violating the NFL substance abuse program.

``We've taken the steps necessary to ensure an on-time arrival, and
he's
excited about rejoining his team,'' said Williams' agent, Leigh
Steinberg.

The NFL cleared Williams to report on the first day of camp without
incurring a further violation of the drug program, league spokesman
Greg Aiello
said Tuesday. Williams acknowledged shortly after retiring that he
failed drug
tests and faced a suspension for testing positive three times for
marijuana.

Steinberg said Williams studied holistic medicine at a school in
northern
California from October to April and finished the first year of a
three-year
program, then spent April at a yoga center in India and became
certified as an
instructor.

``Both emphasize natural methods of healing and are opposed to the
use of
drugs and alcohol to alter consciousness,'' Steinberg said.

After retiring, Williams lost more than 20 pounds on a vegetarian
diet.
Steinberg said his weight is back above 215, still below his listed
weight of
226 on the 2004 preseason roster.

Williams rushed for 3,225 yards and 25 touchdowns in two seasons
with the
Dolphins. He informed coach Dave Wannstedt of his retirement plans last
July
23, one week before the start of training camp.

A court later found the 1998 Heisman Trophy winner in breach of
contract by
retiring, and ordered him to repay the team $8.6 million. The team has
not yet
sought to collect the settlement, and new coach Nick Saban offered
Williams
another chance to play for the Dolphins, who begin workouts Monday.

``Ricky and coach Saban seem to have established a very good rapport
in the
past several months,'' Steinberg said.

I don't know what ERMC stands for, but it is a private enterprise
unaffiliated with the speedway and manages the *private* lots, like the
mall. They are known to gouge people, even locals who go in for shopping.
You probably would have fared better at one of the speedway controlled lots.
As for traffic control it sucks during all special events, yet they never
seem to improve it. That's why those of us who live here avoid that side of
town until you race folks leave!

2005-06-16 Thread Devonna Snuggs

Beauty-School Beatdown - Wednesday, June 15,

A stick-up man tried to rob a Louisiana beauty school ? and ended up getting
an extremely nasty makeover.
Cops say Jared Gipson, 24, entered Blalock's Beauty College(search) in
Shreveport at noon Tuesday and announced a robbery.

I thought it was someone just playing, but then I saw that big old gun,
manager Dianne Mitchell told The Times of Shreveport. He said, 'Get down,
big mama.'

The masked robber ordered the people in the room ? 18 to 20 students and
teachers ? to lie on the floor, leading some to think they were going to be
killed.

You'll be the first to go, he allegedly growled to one crying woman.

After collecting everyone's money, the gunman pushed the school's sole male
employee, Abram Bishop, toward the back of the room ? but then turned and
began to run out the door.

That's when Mitchell stuck out her leg. The robber tripped over it, dropped
the gun and slammed into a wall.
Bishop immediately jumped on his back, forcing the stick-up man down to the
floor.

Get that sucker! yelled Mitchell, and the dozen and a half women present
grabbed whatever they could get their hands on ? curling irons, chairs, a
table leg ? and piled on.

They just whooped the hell out of him, said school owner Sharon Blalock.

Crying in pain, bleeding and having soiled his pants, the gunman tried to
crawl away, but the angry women held on to his legs and kept hitting him
until police arrived.

Gipson was charged with armed robbery and taken to LSU Hospital (search) in
a neck brace, having suffered multiple lacerations. No one else was
seriously hurt.

He got what he deserved, said student Renae Collier.

Gipson's gun turned out to be unloaded.

He walked into the wrong place at the wrong time, one police officer told
KTBS-TV of Shreveport.

You can tell any prospective students: Blalock's Beauty College has got
your back, said Mitchell.

[RollTideFan] (Non) NCAA ponders future of Indian nicknames

2005-05-16 Thread Lizard Fish

http://www.usatoday.com/sports/college/other/2005-05-15-native-americans-ncaa_x.htm

By Steve Wieberg, USA TODAY

After wrestling with the politically delicate issue for more than four years,
the NCAA may be close to rendering a verdict on the
use of Native American mascots and nicknames - from Indians and Braves to
Redmen and Savages - by 30 of its member universities. The
governing body will conduct the first in a series of summer meetings next month
and could decide by August whether it can and should
impose a ban on Indian imagery, which critics charge is demeaning and even
racist.

Ultimate responsibility falls to the NCAA's highest body, the 17-member
Executive Committee, which meets in early August.

Whether the association will or legally must continue to yield to individual
campus discretion - as the NCAA does on such matters as
minority hiring - is uncertain. Targets range from Florida State (Seminoles)
and Utah (Utes) to lower-division institutions with
particularly provocative nicknames: Southeastern Oklahoma (Savages) and
Carthage, Wis. (Redmen).

What we can do is educate, get the information out there to you, says
Southwestern Athletic Conference Commissioner Robert Vowels,
who heads the Minority Interests and Opportunities Committee. I can't sit here
and say right now that we can enforce something or
establish a penalty structure.

One possibility, says the NCAA's Corey Jackson, who works closely with the
committee, is a lever the association has applied to the
issue of flying the Confederate flag or incorporating in their state flags. Two
states that do, South Carolina and Mississippi, are
barred from hosting association championships.

The NCAA's attention to the mascot issue grew out of the flag flap four years
ago.

This isn't the first time the NCAA has undertaken a review of such nicknames.
In 2002, the minority interests committee called for
this tradition to be retired. Those schools say the use of the nicknames is
in many case a tradition intended to honor Native
Americans and their culture.

Subject: Victory for Freedom
Dear Friends,
It isn't over yet, but today there was a resounding victory for freedom
and democracy here in Baghdad. Having been here for a while now, many of
us have grown weary of the hand-wringers, worriers, pessimists, whiners,
and
host of others who have been telling us for so long that all is lost in
Iraq. Today we witnessed just how courageous the Iraqi people can be and
how
much they love their new-found freedom.

After listening to the pundits tell us how terrible the Iraqi Security
Forces are, today I watched the Iraqi Security Forces stand tall. They
protected 1,188 polling sites in Baghdad. Although there were a number
of suicide bombers who attacked today, not a single one penetrated the
perimeter of a polling site. There were several Iraqi policemen, and
several Iraqi soldiers who lost their lives today. But they did not lose
their honor or their courage; none of the 30,000 plus Iraqi Security
Forces
on duty in Baghdad ran away from danger today.

At the site of our first suicide bombing of the day, voters did not lose
their courage either. They quickly lined back up at the same site,
spitting on the body of the suicide bomber as they passed by in line to
vote. A woman came out of line and took the shoe of the bomber and put it
on his face- a great insult to an Arab. The same was true at any
polling site that had violence. Voters immediately lined up again to cast
their vote.
How many Americans value their privilege to vote enough to show that kind
of courage?
We have listened to many experts talk about how the Sunnis would not
participate in the election. Polling sites in Abu Guyreb were moved to
Gasaliya because the Iraqi Election Commission was concerned about
security in Abu Guyrb. We watched thousands walk down the highway- Sunni
Moslems- on the 7 mile round trip to the polling sites so they could vote.
All under the threat that terrorists had been making that they would kill
anyone who voted. How many Americans would do that?
All over Baghdad the story was the same and I could tell a dozen stories
of great courage and determination. Despite the enemy's campaign of
terror, despite danger, threats, intimidation, and the sporadic incidents
of violence and terror today, Iraqis turned out in determined, large
numbers to vote. The excitement was moving. Even though the terrorists
have said they will kill anyone with a marked finger (when you voted
your
finger was dipped in ink to keep people from voting a second time), voters
paraded down the street holding their fingers up in joy and overwhelming
pride.

When I told one Iraqi I was sorry that people had died or been wounded
today, he just said freedom has a price, and this is the price that we
must pay. And every Iraqi I talked to said thank you to the United
States for this opportunity, for this freedom, and how grateful they were
for our help.
I am sure it will only be hours until you start hearing all the experts,
most of which have never been to Iraq, start trying to convince us that
today was flawed, failed, or somehow less than a wonderful day and a
blow for freedom. They are the same people who say we are failing here,
that you couldn't do an election on the 30th of January, and on and on.
It is true we haven't won here yet. It is not predetermined that we
will
win, and it will take continued sacrifice and determination on our part.
Those who hate freedom and democracy will still fight, many to the death,
to
try to stop this march to freedom and prosperity by the Iraqis with our
help.
They are terrified of the thought of a free and democratic Iraq that leads
this whole region to a

No, I'm not surprised by it, nor disappointed. The only reason I got

Re: [RollTideFan] [Non] Pope Says No Sports on Sunday

2004-12-28 Thread Rick Mc.
What a huGe black eye the Catholics carry around these days (rightfully
so I might add). I can see why the Pope wants to get back to the basics
of worship but he's wasting his precious breath by giving a message like
this. Sports is king on Sunday and will be until the second coming. Even
some of the Mormans/LDS are relaxing their stance on playing sports on
Sunday. Who would have ever guessed that would happen.

The Pope Says Don't Do THIS on Sundays
No more watching movies or football games on Sundays. Pope John Paul II
has decreed that Roman Catholics should reserve Sunday as a day for God
only and not for secular diversions, such as entertainment and sports,
reports Reuters.

When Sunday loses its fundamental meaning and becomes subordinate to a
secular concept of 'weekend' dominated by such things as entertainment
and sport, people stay locked within a horizon so narrow that they can
no longer see the heavens, the pontiff said in a speech to 35
Australian bishops, who recently made a pilgrimage to the Vatican. The
pope blasted what he called the pernicious ideology of secularism.

Condemning the culture of the here and now, the Holy Father encouraged
the leaders of the church to lead men and women from the shadows of
moral confusion and ambiguous thinking. Noting the secular culture is
undermining family life, the pope encouraged Catholics to remain
faithful to the Sunday Mass.

Richard Lapchick, director of the Institute for Diversity and Ethics in
Sport at the University of Central Florida in Orlando, admitted to The
Boston Herald that he was kind of flabbergasted by the pope's
suggestion, because it seems like it's coming out of left field. We've
been playing sports on Sunday his entire papacy. Of course, most
professional teams, including those in Europe, play their games on
Sundays. Who can imagine a Sunday afternoon between August and January
without a National Football League game?

To which the pope says this: Sunday is the supreme day of faith, an
indispensable day, the day of Christian hope. Any weakening in the
Sunday observance of Holy Mass weakens Christian discipleship.

Lapchick had harsh words in reply. If the Catholic church did place a
ban on Sunday sports, he thinks the church would lose congregants.
Sports is a religion in this country and a lot of the world, he said.

[RollTideFan] [Non] America's Favorite Sports

2004-12-27 Thread Rick Mc.
Thought I'd pass this along just for fun...
-
The Two Sports Americans Hate the Most
We love football, basketball, and auto racing, but most Americans don't
like women's golf and women's professional basketball. That's the word
from the annual Harris Poll of 2,555 adults that ranks the nation's
favorite sports.

For the second year in a row, professional football leads baseball by
2-to-1--30 percent vs. 15 percent--as the nation's favorite sport. We're
going to have to start saying, As American as apple pie and football.
In 1985 when Harris Poll first surveyed Americans about their favorite
sports, football and baseball were tied for first place. But in the
intervening years, baseball has steadily fallen from our good graces as
football has risen.

America's favorite sports:
1. 30 percent: Professional football
2. 15 percent: Baseball
3. 11 percent: College football
4. 7 percent: Men's professional basketball
5. 7 percent: Auto racing
6. 6 percent: Men's college basketball
7. 4 percent: Men's golf
8. 4 percent: Hockey
9. 3 percent: Men's soccer
10. 2 percent: Women's tennis
11. 2 percent: Boxing
1 percent for each of the following: Track field, horse racing,
bowling, women's college basketball, and women's soccer.
Registering less than one percent of the vote: Women's soccer and
women's professional basketball.

Every positive integer is a multiple of 9 plus the sum
of its
digits.
Here is why. Take 7843. That's equal to
7×1000 + 8×100 + 4×10 + 3 which equals
7×(999 + 1) + 8×(99 + 1) + 4×(9 + 1) + 3 which equals
7×999 + 7×1 + 8×99 + 8×1 + 4×9 + 4×1 + 3 which equals
7×999 + 7 + 8×99 + 8 + 4×9 + 4 + 3 which equals
(7×999 + 8×99 + 4×9) + (7 + 8 + 4 + 3) which equals
9(7×111 + 8×11 + 4) + (7 + 8 + 4 + 3) which equals
a multiple of 9 + the sum of the digits.
Now when the number is rearranged, that number too is a
multiple of 9
plus the sum of its digits.
Since the sum of the digits is the same no matter how
the digits are
rearranged, when you subtract you get a multiple of 9
because the sum
of the digits cancel and leave the difference of two
multiples of 9,
which is a multiple of 9.
Since the result must be a multiple of 9, the sum of its
digits must
also be a multiple of 9. Now you are given all the
digits but one,
so you add all the digits but one, and that missing
digit must be
just enough to add to the sum of the other digits to
make a multiple
of 9.
7843 = multiple of 9 + (7+8+4+3)
4387 = multiple of 9 + (4+7+8+3)
--- subtract these
3456 = multiple of 9 - multiple of 9 + (7+8+4+3) -
(4+7+8+3) =
a multiple of 9 + 0 =
a multiple of 9
That multiple of 9 is also a multiple of 9 plus the sum
of its
digits. Therefore the sum of its digits must also be a
multiple of
9.
Suppose the person circles the 5 and gives you the three
digits
sqrambled as 4,6,3. You know the sum of the digits must
be a
multiple of 9. You add 4+6+3 and get 13. The next
multiple of 9 is
18, so you know the circled digit must be 18-13 or 5

[RollTideFan] [Non-Bama] Sounds dirty but isn't

2004-09-30 Thread M Laborde

From another (non-Bama) list. I cannot confirm the story,
but it is great reading.

Just before World War 1, there were a number of terrorist
attacks on the United States forces in the Phillippines by
Muslim extremist's.

So General Pershing captured 50 terrorists and had them
tied to posts for execution his men bringing in two pigs
and slaughtered them in front of the horrified terrorist.
Muslims detest pork because they believe pigs are filthy
animals.

Some of them simply refuse to eat it, while others won't
even touch pigs at all, nor any of their by-products.
To them, eating or touching a pig, its meat, it's blood,
etc., is to be instantly barred from paradise ( and those
virgins ) and doomed to hell.
The soldiers then soaked their bullets in the pigs blood,
and proceeded to execute 49 of the terrorists by firing
squad.

The soldiers then dug a big hole, dumped in the terrorist's
bodies and covered them in pig blood, entrails, etc.
They let the 50th man go. And for the next forty-two years,
there was not a single Muslim extremist attack anywhere in
the world.

Maybe it is time for this segement of history to repeat
itself, maybe in Iraq?
The question is, where do we find another Black Jack
Pershing ?

[RollTideFan] [non-Bama] Bush administration completes get-tough plan for Syria

2004-09-28 Thread M Laborde
http://www.worldtribune.com/worldtribune/breaking_11.html

Bush administration completes get-tough plan for Syria

SPECIAL TO WORLD TRIBUNE.COM
Tuesday, September 28, 2004
The Bush administration has drafted contingency plans for bringing military and
economic pressure against the regime of Syrian President Bashar Assad.

Officials said the administration has determined that diplomacy has failed to resolve
U.S. concerns that Syria has been working to destabilize the interim government in
Iraq.

They said the Assad regime has been harboring senior operatives of Abu Mussib Al
Zarqawi, regarded as the most lethal insurgent in Iraq, aides to Saddam Hussein as
well as Iraqi nuclear scientists as part of a Syrian policy coordinated with Iran.

On Monday, the State Department reiterated its criticism of Syria for its harboring
groups deemed as terrorists, Middle East Newsline reported. The department refused to
condemn the Sept. 26 assassination of a Hamas leader in Damascus in a car-bombing
attributed to Israel.

If Americans are dying in Iraq because of Syrian policies, then this is something we
are not going to tolerate, a senior official said.

The official, who refused to be identified, did not report any progress in U.S.
efforts to end Syria's support of the insurgency movement in Iraq or other issues in
dispute between Damascus and Washington.

Officials warned that unless Syria changes its policy within the next few weeks, the
administration would consider economic and military measures against Damascus that
would intensify in 2005. They said the Defense Department has drafted a range of
military options meant to put Damascus on the defensive and encourage insurrection
within Syria.
Last week, Secretary of State Colin Powell praised Syria's redeployment of more than
3,000 troops in Lebanon and suggested the onset of a new atmosphere in relations.

I can't go into details on this, but they gave me some information with respect to
financial activities [to insurgents in Iraq] and how we can cooperate more fully on
that, Powell said in a Sept. 24 meeting with the New York Times editorial board.
We're looking at ways to improve our intelligence exchange.

Two weeks ago, Syria and the United States met in Damascus in what officials termed
was a hard-nosed review of bilateral relations that focused on the Assad regime's
policy in Iraq.

The U.S. delegation, headed by Assistant Secretary of State William Burns contained
members of the Pentagon, White House and National Security Council.

The talks reviewed Syrian WMD programs, support for the insurgency in Iraq and Syria's
harboring of billions of dollars sent by the Saddam Hussein regime in 2002 and 2003.

What we said in Damascus is that this has to stop, the senior official said. Our
message to Syria was a warning that this is very serious. Because this means Syria
shares responsibility for the killing of Americans and Iraqis, and it has to stop.
At the meeting, Damascus agreed to participate in talks with Iraq and U.S. Central
Command to launch cooperation that would halt the flow of insurgents and weapons from
Syria, officials said. Officials said the Assad regime was warned that the failure of
the military talks, which began on Tuesday in Damascus, could trigger what they termed
a major deterioration in U.S. relations with Syria.

Our job is to convince them that the risk of undermining us is much greater than the
opposite, the senior official said.

During the September meeting in Damascus, officials said, the U.S. delegation
presented the Assad regime with evidence of Syrian government aid to the insurgency
movement in Iraq. The delegation argued that Syria has intensified its support of Al
Zarqawi and pro-Saddam forces in an effort to torpedo Iraqi elections scheduled in
January 2005.

It's not just a question of border control, the senior official said. Institutions
within Syria are actively colluding with our enemies in Iraq.

Terrorists and their supporters beget a cycle of violence that is best addressed
through the end of support of terror, State Department deputy spokesman Adam Ereli
said. We have made it clear that in numerous meetings with the Syrians that we think
it's in their interests, in the interests of the region, to end support for terrorist
organizations and terrorist individuals operating from their territory.

[RollTideFan] [Non-Bama] A Funny

2004-09-23 Thread M Laborde
This is an excellent example why lawyers should never ask a question of a witness if
they aren't prepared for the answer:

In a trial, a Southern small town prosecuting attorney called his
first witness to the stand. She was a grandmother-type elderly woman.

He approached her and asked his first question,Mrs. Jones, do you know me?

She responded, Why, yes I do know you, Mr. Williams. I've know you since you were a
young boy, and frankly, you've been a big disappointment to me. You lie, you cheat on
your wife, you manipulate people and talk about them behind their backs. You think
you're a big shot when you haven't the brains to realize you never will amount to
anything more than a two-bit paper pusher. Yes, I know you.

The Lawyer was stunned. Not knowing what else to do, he pointed across the room and
asked, Mrs. Jones do you know the defense attorney?

She again replied, Why yes, I do. I've known Mr. Bradley since he was a youngster,
too. He's lazy, bigoted, and he has a drinking problem. He can't build a normal
relationship with anyone and his law practice is one of the worst in the entire state.
Not to mention he cheated on his wife with three different women, one of them was your
wife. Yes, I know him.

The defense attorney almost died.

The judge asked both counselors to approach the bench, and in a very quiet voice,
said: If either of you bastards asks her if she knows me, I'll throw your sorry asses
in jail for contempt.

There was no further question for this witness. Obviously, she knew too much.
