[sage-support] Re: Notebook can't view files

2008-11-08 Thread Marshall Hampton

I wonder if this is a permissions issue - ? I have had some similar
problems in the past, some of which were permission-related. Others I
think arose from changes to the notebook and I never figured them out,
nor was I able to reprduce them (so I never filed a ticket), but that
was about a year ago, and I have not had problems since.

[sage-support] Re: Notebook can't view files

2008-11-08 Thread M. Yurko

Before, I was using 3.0.1 I believe, but I ended up having to do a
reformat (by Ubuntu installation gave a kernel panic after the upgrade
to Intrepid), and so it was a fresh installation. I copied the old
notebook folder from the old installation. When I didn't see them
after adding them back I, then removed them and tried to see a newly
created worksheet, but it didn't show up after restarting the server.
I am going to try and re-download and reinstall, but if that fails,
I'll report back. Thanks for your responses.

Type something like the following at the command line,
where Myurko gets replaced by your Linux username:

chown Myurko. -R $HOME/.sage

Maxima actually does all the symbolic integration
in Sage, currently, so I've forwarded your email

Sage punts to Maxima to do symbolic integrals.
In this case, Maxima computed an antiderivative and plugged
in the limits of integration. You can coax Maxima into doing
the right thing by computing a limit:

assume (a > 0, bb > 0, bb > %pi/6);
integrate (integrate (r, r, a*csc(theta), 2*a), theta, %pi/6, bb);
 => (4*a^2*bb*tan(bb)+a^2)/(2*tan(bb))-(2*%pi+3*sqrt(3))*a^2/6
limit (%, bb, %pi/2, minus);
 => (4*%pi-3*sqrt(3))*a^2/6

I guess Maxima could apply the limit automatically -- that
shouldn't change the result for most integrals, but gets the
correct result in cases like this. Opinions from the Maxima
crowd are welcome.

This depends on how your points are given. I'm going to assume you
have latitude/longitude (in degrees), called phi and theta
respectively. Then one would draw the sphere via

sage: world = sphere((0,0,0), radius=1, color='blue')

Here I'm making 100 random cities.
sage: cities = [(ZZ.random_element(-180,180), ZZ.random_element
(-90,90)) for _ in range(100)]

Now I'll convert polar coordinates to regular xyz coordinates.
sage: t = RDF(pi/180)
sage: city_coords = [(cos(t*theta)*cos(t*phi), sin(t*theta)*cos
(t*phi), sin(t*phi)) for theta, phi in cities]

Now I'll plot them
sage: world + sum([point3d(v, color='red') for v in city_coords])

I could have, of course, done something more interesting than "points"
sage: world + sum([tetrahedron(size=.1, color='yellow').translate(v)
for v in city_coords])
