Kevin, your logic is irrefutable and your arguments are well-reasoned. If a
majority feels this is a worthwhile project to undertake, so be it. Indeed,
my concern was never with the concept itself, but whether spending time and
effort on something like this was worth it right now.

We've talked about so many projects these past couple of years on
Saligaonet, but not a single one is anywhere near off the ground (I'm not
blaming any individuals here, but in a way we're all 'collectively'
responsible). That's the problem with 'collective' responsibility and
'community' action -- it's so difficult to get off the "collective ass" and
actually do something concrete. Everyone talks, but everyone waits for
everyone else to raise the first leg! [I humbly accept that I'm one of the
worst culprits in this regard].

I guess what we need is a 'project coordinator' -- appointed by consensus
for each project -- who would then be responsible and accountable to make
sure the project actually gets off the mailing list and into the real world,
and gets completed in real time -- with assistance from everyone else who
offers to help, of course.

Cheers

- Val

Thanks, Sanjeev. I guess suitability for co-ordinating a particular project
would depend on the person's areas of expertise, location, time
availability, etc.

Project Co-ordinator - great idea !!!

Sanjeev

Personally, I would like to volunteer as project co-ordinator for the
Saligao Book project. In this case, I think it's for Fr Nascimento to decide
whom he would like to have as co-ordinator, and if he feels that someone
else (like Mario & Muriel for instance) would be better suited, then I would
certainly support them and still help out with the concept and editing as
well.

I forgot to mention in the previous mail that while a project co-ordinator
is expected to be responsible and accountable, I feel that he or she should
also be given full authority to take decisions pertaining to the project,
once appointed -- even though some others might have differing opinions on
the decisions taken.

As far as I can recollect, the pending projects that have been talked about
on the list are as follows:

1. Saligao Book (authored by Fr Nascimento)
2. Map of Saligao village
3. Children's Park
4. Saligao website (it's been static and unchanged since 1998!)
5. Weekly news snippets from the village
6. Computer Club
7. Fitness Centre
8. Road Naming
Please add to this list, share your thoughts, volunteer -- whatever!
Best wishes,
- Val

I am based in Bombay. That's why I will only be able to take up projects
which do not need my continuous physical presence in Saligao. The book
project fits into this scheme quite nicely. Meanwhile, I am planning to make
more frequent visits to Goa in the next few months (a trip next week is
likely) -- I will contact Fr Nascimento independently and seek his advice on
how he would like to proceed. Will keep the list updated on whatever
transpires.

Not us for 2 reasons:

1. We are not competent.
2. We do not want to play co-ordinator roles as we are already involved in
more voluntary work than we can handle. We will gladly work 'under'
coordinators in teams that handle different projects. In this case we can do
some editing, proofing and camera work if needed.

We do not see anyone more competent than Val to coordinate the Saligao Book
project and strongly second him in this role.

Solidarity.

Dear Zelma,
Thank you very much for droping some lines. I have

Nice to know that you will be in Goa in December.
You are most welcome to visit me in Vasco at St. Andrew's. Life in this church
is hectic as we have around 23 thousand catholics and we are 4 priests. However
due to your good thoughts and prayers we are surviving.
Remember me to Parviz and may God bless you.kindly
keep in touch.
As Val D'Souza is been chosen as Project
Co-ordinator I will leave to him how to present the book and ask him to contact
the Saligaokars he needs for editing , photography, digiting as I hardly
understand such matters. I hope he will contact you both.

RE: [saligaonet] project co-ordinator

2004-06-17 Thread Val Souza
Hi
Project Co-ordinator - great idea !!!
I don't mind volunteering for a project that I can handle.
Sanjeev
Thanks, Sanjeev. I guess suitability for co-ordinating a particular project
would depend on the person's areas of expertise, location, time
availability, etc.

Personally, I would like to volunteer as project co-ordinator for the
Saligao Book project. In this case, I think it's for Fr Nascimento to decide
whom he would like to have as co-ordinator, and if he feels that someone
else (like Mario & Muriel for instance) would be better suited, then I would
certainly support them and still help out with the concept and editing.

I forgot to mention in the previous mail that while a project co-ordinator
is expected to be responsible and accountable, he or she should also be
given full authority to take decisions pertaining to the project, once
appointed -- even though some others might have differing opinions on the
decisions taken.

As far as I can recollect, the pending projects that have been talked about
on the list are as follows:

1. Saligao Book (authored by Fr Nascimento)
2. Map of Saligao village
3. Children's Park
4. Saligao website (it's been static since 1998!)
5. Weekly news snippets from the village
6. Computer Club
7. Fitness Centre
8. Road Naming
Please add to this list, share your thoughts, volunteer -- whatever!
Best wishes,
- Val

Re: [saligaonet] project co-ordinator

2004-06-21 Thread Ashley Delaney
Hello all..
ok. ok ok.. so i've resurfaced along with my terrible typo's and spelling
mistakes fater a llooong time.. i had a computer crash.. due to our famous
bsnl, lightning struck my pc and now i'm sending this mail from a cyber.
i've been quite on this front for long because i dint wnat to waste presious
time in replying from a cyber but now i've got free int at a frineds so..
as val said before
 start what val said-
1. Saligao Book (authored by Fr Nascimento)
2. Map of Saligao village
3. Children's Park
4. Saligao website (it's been static since 1998!)
5. Weekly news snippets from the village
6. Computer Club
7. Fitness Centre
8. Road Naming
Please add to this list, share your thoughts, volunteer -- whatever!

end what the great val said--

so.. there we go.. whew what did i miss in just a monthof silence??? wow ok
my thoughs on the above.
why cant we all just take ONE project and work on that first before trying
to do too many things at one time??? i'll give u the example of divar.. they
tried to do several projects at the same time and notjing worked out, untill
they decided to tackle the problems one by one nad now voila. fist villa in
goa for a lot of things.. ask fred.
so.. lets do this steadly and slowly.. otherwise we are all talka nd no do.
makes me mad.. why?? cus for so long i'm telling everyone about point no 4
and noone is coming forward.
also to put it simply to have a project co-ordinator for anything.. the
co-ordinatoir HAS to be physicaslly presnet around the focus of the
project.. meaning the co-ordinator shd be in goa / or saligao and not in
mumbai or canada or whatever...
please not val, this is NOT in any way to malign ur name or against you, its
just that givin my own experiece with ngo projects and co-ordinatoirs i ahve
found that sitting in the usa you could never properlyt co-ordinate a book
or a school project. people like mario/ sanjeev would be better suited for
the job.

i would say we drop nos 7 and 8 and concentrate on items above.. we can do
these concurrently with different co-ordinators in charge.. while the park
may take time. the book, website, news clips can be started at any time on
the net etc.. u *dont need* all ideas and all that all the time.. u just
need a responsible person to take charge and start the ball rolling.

in case others have seen a bitter side to me in this little thing i
apologise, its just that i'm fed up with people talking and not doing
anything. i'm yet to see someone help dean with his childrens park first adn
now they wnat to creat a fitness center!!.
anyway.. regards to all

and P.S annette ;; ahhhm you might wanna come to saligao for san jao .. this
time u shd see the people at the pond at the lourdes convent junction.. its
crowded!!! i'm going to celebrat my birthday in style this year!!
cherio then
Ash

HI SaligaoNetters!
Welcome back, Ashley! So even the computer whizz falls prey to computer
crashes eh? My sympathies! Anyway with all this freedom & free int etc.,
make hay whilst the sun shines.

I get this odd sorta feeling that the spelling & typo errors are made to
invite postings ...mine more than most. Or there is a condition called
dyslexia - maybe needs to be checked out because this in no way acts as a
slur or impediment to one's intelligence - hey Ashley I'm talking about
you... & remind me please - what is "nad now voila. fist villa in Goa"

Thanks Ashley, that lets me out ("whatever" takes care of that I
guess)...anyway I wasnt volunteering, not enough talent to head any of the
projects 1-8.

news clips can be started at any time on
Well, Fr. Nasciment has already started giving us newsclips of Saligao for
which I thank him, hope he is going to continue, didnt get any in the last
few days, perhaps nothing much going on in Saligao or maybe news was in the
newspapers. If there is anything worth mentioning about Saligaokars over
here or some newsworthy item, will make my posting accordingly.
in case others have seen a bitter side to me in this little thing i

Hey, no sweat! But not everyone posting on the net is able to do things,
that's why one must take the postings as thoughts & suggestions & the doers
like you & the rest, will do .. give us some credit - - we have confidence
in the doers ... no wonder you are using the words "bitter" & "apologise" in
same sentence. Why the ire, young man? - let things take their course,
patience patience, all will get done in time - The children's park & the
fitness centre all will co-operate I'm sure including you.

and P.S annette ;; ahhhm you might wanna come to saligao for san jao ..
this
time u shd see the people at the pond at the lourdes convent junction.. its
crowded!!! i'm going to celebrat my birthday in style this year!!
Thanks for the snippet of information Ashley but will not take you up on
this one, sorry. Have been to Goa twice within 2 months on emergency leave,
so there's no way I have the pennies to fly to Saligao again. And I have a
phobia about water, lot of water, be it rain, water in the gullies of
Saligao, in the ponds, in the sea, ... I can manage the water in my wash
basin & that falling from the shower into my bath tray (dont use the bath
tub either ... he he!) Also can do without the slush & the muck - no
Panchayat member nor minister nor anybody bothered to tar the road (Kevin
will call it piggylane or bylane) despite our pleas (nothing in writing of
course, we didnt do things that way before, just gave votes for promises
made but not kept, know better now) from my house to the main road. Water
has got into my gumboots too more often than not & we didnt have a bridge
over the swollen stream dividing the Dark Continent from the Bright
Continent in yesteryears.

I found it unhygienic that people swam in a well & then others used the
water for drinking etc. though the scientists amongst you would tell me the
blah blah about water getting purified within the hour due to the springs
below & the movement of water, the throwing in of a few crystals of
potassium permanganate etc. So now that the pond has been built up, just be
careful of the leeches & the catfish..that they dont get a bit of you ok?

Enjoy yourselves & Happy Feast for 24th. & if it's your birthday too on
24th Ashley, (I recall we share the same month in birthdays but I doubt the
same star) then I wish you Many Happy Returns of the Day. Lost count, but
it's 23 now or 24? Mmm oh oh, YOU dont need to answer that one, apparently
in this computer age one doesnt ask the age of a man either - taboo.

Ciao
Annette

We could request Derek to help, if someone is willing to
sponsor the space and domain name for the site.

Maybe we need a CMS (content management solution). The
earlier site, while a good effort, didn't have a CMS,
meaning updating it was obviously a tedious job.

Re: Fw: [saligaonet] project co-ordinator

2004-06-11 Thread Kevin Saldanha, DVM
Paula,

If you ever get the house back, be careful where you dig in the front yard.
Sacrula's (t)rusty bike is buried somewhere there under 13 (St. Anthony's number?)
stones with a generous sprinkling of salt to 'preserve' it. (Anyone have any other
details of this story? Was purported to have taken place when I was still in Saligao
in the early '70s)

Speaking of saints, I guess the Siolim church falls under St. Anthony's protection.
We are going to their feast celebration, tomorrow (Saturday), here in Toronto. We
have become 'universal villagers' out here in the social sense ;) Not that I'm any
more religious for it, it seems that I'm going the other way.(If anyone is
interested in knowing more about my recent change in philosophy, I'll be happy to
communicate personally - [EMAIL PROTECTED] - so not to bore the list with my
personal journey).

I'm assuming the call for project co-ordinators is to the residents of (or at least
living close to) Saligao. Otherwise, I'd be happy to help out.

Kevin
