If the check takes a "long time" to complete it's not interfering with the
other checks of SA.

It would be nice if the check can work with different custom sql checks, eg. to
see the results of some stored views.

What do you mean with "custom SQL"?
And why external and not internal?

It no problem for me to remove the old checks, we use sql 2008/2014
An external com is preferable, with some configurable settings

For some time we have a SQL server check in Servers Alive. This check is based
on SQL DMO, and only works with realy old version of SQL. For newer versions
of SQL we have the add-on, however not for the newest version of SQL.

There are some questions surrounding that.
* what version(s) of SQL are you using (and want to check)
* do you see it as a problem if the 'support' for those old versions of
SQL (upto SQL2000) would be removed from Servers Alive
* do you prefer it to be a build-in check (like the current SQL DMO
based one) or do you prefer an external COM check for it

RE: [SA-list] Nested SAIF tags

2014-12-19 Thread Lau Daniels
Jason,

You can use the template I provided by adding a line into the HTML-File
between the tags:

I use this already a few months (I didn't update the files here on Woodstone
yet).
The advantage of the template is the way it displays any failure on the top so
you don't have to search for it and your able to view the charts.

I looked at using more than shown in my example, but it looks
too limited to solve the specific combination of problems I was trying to
resolve. However, I did find another way to closely accomplish what I was
shooting for. You can see a screenshot of my mobile template
(http://postimg.org/image/4s62d7t5r/) and the full template file
(http://pastebin.com/UzwGUK0u).

It’s not super pretty, but it’s a start and I didn’t see any examples for
mobile-specific templates on the website.

Thanks,

Anthony,

If you do only  “net view “ it should show you all available
servers.

If the one you are looking for is not present check on it the following:

-firewall settings (try with firewall off)

-file and printer sharing on

-account settings for user connecting (domain admin?)

RE: [SA-list] Database check changes

2013-12-11 Thread Lau Daniels
Dirk,

It would be great if i could do sql query directly from within a SA-test and
evaluate the response.
For example:
A test with:
 "select status, DATABASE_STATUS, active_state from gv$instance where
INSTANCE_NAME='rac-node1';" and then test for the string "active".
Or
select tablespace_name,used_percent from dba_tablespace_usage_metrics; and
evaluate the percentage returned.

Now I'm running a script every hour but integrated in SA would be great. Nice
proposition ;-)

Currently in SA there are several ways to check a database
  * in SA via the SQL checker (using the old DMO libs)
  * in SA via the Oracle checker (using the Oracle Windows libs)
  * external COM check for SQL (2005/2008) using the current SMO libs
  * external COM check for ODBC
  * external COM mySQL

We are thinking about converting this to 1 type of db check that is based on
the "native" client (for Oracle - SQL - Sybase - DB2 - Interbase - SQLBase -
mySQL - SQLite - Postgress or ODBC). This would require that you changing your
existing db checks (the COM ones would still work, the internal not) and that
instead of "just" checking if a database is online (like the current SQL and
Oracle check do) we would do execute a SQL statement just as we do in the ODBC
checker.
The idea is to remove the current MS-SQL and Oracle check from SA and replace
it by the above check, other option would be to leave the old checks in it and
create a new check (internal or as COM check)

I would like some reactions/feedback on this idea

Dirk,

We don't use IM anymore.
Only email and sound are used for alerts.

Best regards,

In SA v7 we still have some IM options, some of them are no longer working (as
the service no longer exists or got integrated into another one).
We would like to know IF you still want IM as alerting and if so what type/kind
of IM you would like to have in SA.

Yes, i know.
But it would be easy to have the result of the calculation displayed.
Now i have to calculate till I know what has to be the desired value to be True

In the debug you do get the result of the formula too, and that is a TRUE or
FALSE... (not a number)

Thanks,

Got me a little confused, in setup - logging - logfile (debugging).

Had debugview running next to SA and found an error in my own typing.

sa_currenttimeinms had a typo a m instead of n (sa_curenttimeimms).
The only one not shown in the info screen of the check.

What value is used if it's a typo, no error messages found.
Maybe the result of the formula should be displayed in the debug.

Changed it and ok..

Dirk, thanks for your support.

There is a new version on http://beta.woodstone.nu were you will get extra
logging within debugview.

Logging will look like:
[8048] Formula : (sa_currentresult - sa_previousresult) < 2000 [8048]
sa_currentresult : 811496258 [8048] sa_previousresult : 811484686 [8048]
sa_currenttimeinms : 59146491 [8048] sa_previoustimeinms : 59145083 [8048]
Formula result : TRUE

The result of the formula is a TRUE/FALSE as we evaluate the expression (within
an "external" part of SA).

RE: [SA-list] snmp bandwith monitoring

2013-04-24 Thread Lau Daniels
Dirk,

Thanks, appreciate it.

We had a slow build up of DDos requests over one of our internet lines. We
didn't monitor the usage of the internet lines, just trying to implement it now
in SA so we can be warned if a line is going to be flooded.

I think it would be a great feature if it's possible to store it also in RRD,
so you could watch the trend of bandwidth over time in RRD.
Maybe an "SA buildin check" on SNMP that checks a OID twice in a row and gives
the result back?

Only the current result is stored in the RRD db.
I'll see if I can add some logging so the result of the formula is also logged
(not in RRD sorry) so you can see what it gives and why you get the "wrong"
result.

RE: [SA-list] snmp bandwith monitoring

2013-04-24 Thread Lau Daniels
Dirk,

I was sure i missed it somewhere ;-)

But anyway, did some testing and I don’t get it to work.

I get snmp data back from the firewall with SNMP check oid -
1.3.6.1.2.1.2.2.1.10.8 = Total Downloaded in Bytes

I made it really simple, just a formula (sa_currentresult - sa_previousresult)
< 2000 is false

I gives me as sa_previousresult: 937675260 and sa_currentresult: 92813
should result in 6767553
The response of SA is: 92813 should be: (sa_currentresult -
sa_previousresult) < 2000

Even if I enter 200 it still gives "down". Missing something again?

And also another question:
Is there a way to store the result of the formula in the RDD database or only
the sa_currentresult?

Regards,
Lau

You can use a formula for this.

For example:

   (sa_currentresult - sa_previousresult) / (sa_currenttimeinms -
sa_previoustimeinms) <5

Would give an alert if the currentresult - previous result devided by the
(current time in ms -previous time in ms) would be smaller then 5

In the doc under the part of the SNMP CHECK TAB there is this example
too

Hope this helps

[SA-list] snmp bandwith monitoring

2013-04-22 Thread Lau Daniels
Hi Dirk,

Just finished searching for a decent document about bandwidth monitoring using
Serversalive. Nothing found…..

I know I can do a snmp query for ifInOctets for interface 8 with
1.3.6.1.2.1.2.2.1.10.8.
This gives me the The total number of octets received on the interface.

Nice to know but I want the difference between two poll cycles.
Average_Input=Total_Input (in BITS)/ Time (in SEC)

Dirk, is this possible with Serversalive?

Regards,

Lau

Hi Dirk,

I actually have restarted the service, but that has not made a difference in
the reporting of this one entry. If I stop the service, and open the
application, the web reporting is correct, matching what the application shows
as the correct status of the entries.

FYI, entries with ping checks are reported correctly via the service.

If you run Servrs Alive as service and as app at the same time then you can get
different checking results aspecialy for checks that are "windows" based like a
service/process/perfmon/diskspace check. If you run the app and make config
changes then you will have to restart the service is order to get the service
to see those changes.

Do you get the difference in behaviour between the weboutput too when SA is
only running as app (and not at the same time as service)?

Hi Dirk,

I do have Servers Alive running as a service. The symptom I am describing
occurs when SA is running as a service, as well as when the application itself
is open.

I assume that you configure all your alerts within the application, and when
you close it, the salive service runs based on the configuration from the
application. Am I correct in this assumption?

You're linking this to RRD while there is no link to RRD. RRD creates graphs
nothing more.

Could it be that you have the service (of Servers Alive) running and generating

RE: [SA-list] RRD Logging : database creation script not correctly generated

2012-09-20 Thread Lau Daniels
Goodmorning Ken,

If you follow the steps as directed in the pdf you can check the directory with
every step to see if the scripts are generated.

Please check if you put the \ (backslash)  there where needed. If there is a \
in the document please put it also in your entry.

As Dirk also said, enable RRD logging for yourv entries (page 2)

To use the RRD graphics you have to enable RRDTool logging in the setup and
assign the logging to every entry you want.

You can modify entries you want to use RRDLogging for to one by one or just via
the CHANGES WIZARD set:

RRD Roundtrip logging to TRUE for all entries

RRD Check Result logging to TRUE for all entries

RRD Up/Down logging to TRUE for all entries

This way all databases are created and updated for all entries.

And don’t forget about the last line on 11 (If you add/remove checks you
have to repeat the steps on pages 6 through 9 ).

Hi Dirk,

I upgraded to the beta version (v7.0.2546). I still have the same issues:

In c:\rrdtool\RRD-data\ there are no files in the checkresult, roundtrip and
updown subdirectories.

In c:\inetpub\wwwroot\SA\ subdirectories, there are no files.

Therefore there are no graphs on the webpage, nor is data being kept in .db
files.

Should I delete SA folder under c:\inetpub\wwwroot, as well as the c:\rrdtool
folder and start over, or are there other steps that I can take to fix the
RRDtool/SA implementation I am working on?

Bob,

I’m using the 11 version, service is using lmgrd.exe – 11.4.100.0

It’s visible when I make a new check – nt service - list: FLEXlm
Service 1

Did you try to do the same SA-check from another computer?

Also use the check on its listener port (8020)

I’ve had some situations that the service was running but no connection
possible. So no user could start the Cad software.

I think it’s better to check also the real entry point for the software
(eg the port) then rely only on a service check.

I added two additional NTService checks for the same PC running the failing
NTService check. Those checks run successfully so the problem is isolated to
the FlexNet service.

I played around with Systernal's PSService.exe utility which can be used to
turn remote services on/off, query and search for services. It also got "Access
Denied" errors on this service as well but not on others.

I checked the properties on this service and it is setup to logon with a local
account. It has no dependencies.

Lau,

What version of Flex are you using? I have 2 older versions of FlexLM (v8.5 &
v10.0) running on a different system than the one that I'm having issue with
and they work fine.

The version I'm having problems with (v11.10.1) is quite different from
previous versions. For one, it uses a web interface for admin purposes instead
the GUI in previous versions.

So I finally understand the wonderful world of SNMP, MIBs and OIDs!! I am
looking for the SA general user manual, but I cannot seem to locate it anymore
on the website. I know the last revision was still for 6, but I am looking on
how to setup the Trap Receiver Alerts. I’ve setup a couple, and when I
send a test trap from the device I get nothing, no email alert. Anyone have
that document?

Thank you,

2012-06-19 Thread Lau Daniels
Nico,

Had the same problem, solved it by letting the check depend on a check to a
batch file.

The batch file checks time and a run once flag and gives an errorlevel to SA.

It is not exactly on time (depends on how long your checks are running) but it
will only run once within a decent time window.

Hi Dirk,

I can't figure out how to do a check one single time at 7:00 AM, is this
possible without putting the check in maintenance for the rest of the day?

I've tried to set the check-hours to 7:00-22:00 ( So I can see it's up during
daytime) and only once every 500 checks starting at the first check, but it
doesn't check at 7:00 then.

what can I do?

Hi Anthony,

What is it that you are trying to do?

Let SA send traps to your snmp receiver (like kiwi) or just let SA check a snmp
value from a device and alert if that is incorrect?

Well the document did not have an example of what I was looking for. The OID
is where I am having the issue. I entered the Enterprise OID, and set the types
to * as suggested. But the 4 rows for different OID entries, this is where I
don’t know if I have it right. For example for an APC unit.

Name: Cincinnati APC 1

OID: .1.3.6.1.4.1.318.0.5 [checked] (contains) “switched to

^^ I don’t know if the above is right.. I am trying to send test SNMP
and the viewer see’s this.. which I also mimicked to try and generate an
alert, still nothing.

RE: [SA-list] the best way to monitor proxy servers?

2012-04-18 Thread Lau Daniels
Viktor,

It depends on which type of proxy you are using.
You can also use snmp query, process information, running a shell/batch file
that does some check.
A lot of options, but all are depending on the type/brand of proxy you are
using and the operating system.

What is a best way to check availability?

  Any idea?

RE: [SA-list] HTML-based (RRD) templates

2012-04-10 Thread Lau Daniels
Thank you all for the comments and remarkson my RRD-graphics project.

The template file is “as is” finished for the moment and hosted on
http://woodstone.nu/salive/documents.php
(http://woodstone.nu/salive/documents.php)

Also a step by step manual is at the same location. Any comment, addition
and/or remarks? Please post them in this topic.

To everyone, have fun with it and may it help you to better manage your day by
day business….

Those graphics helped me the last week a lot when we had a performance problem.

I was able to trace back the memory and cpu performance of some systems to find
the cause.

So upgrading to enterprise was worth it.

Thank you very much for sharing your template. Templates are a great extensible
feature of SA. I created a ‘very’ basic one for Dirk years ago to

But a call like this one usually meets with little feedback from the community.

I’m not sure why, but think that most Admin deploying SA either lack the

Hopefully your message here elicits more response this time around!
