[Samba] Problem in printing

2004-05-18 Thread Abdul Malik
Hello Samba Team.

one of our valuable client have been using samba version 2 with windows 98
on their workstation
and Unix on their server. Now they are going to upgrade the operating system
on their workstation
form windows98 to windows 2000 professional. In due process their printing
is not working. Do
we have to upgrade the Samba version.

Re: [Samba] Samba completely crashes linux system

2004-05-18 Thread Majeed
I have used 3.0.2 on a gentoo system and havn't experienced crashing
when windows clients connect. I am using 3.0.4 (compiled from source,
not the ebuid) and I have a problem with winbind crashing. Anyhow I
think you need to give a bit more information about the crash, and maybe
some information about your configuration and enviornment. Are you using
gentoo's ebuild or are you compiling from source? Maybe someone else
will have a exact answer for you, but with that amount of info, I doubt it.
good luck,
Majeed

Re: [Samba] samba3.0.4 with FreeBSD

2004-05-18 Thread Edward Irvine at home
Hi,
I've had this working before and I thought I'd go and check out what is
wrong.

It seems the samba configure script is borken. Even when you tell it to
link against kerberos in another directory (for me it was
/opt/MIT-Kerberos) it ignores you and just looks in the default place.

You can tell which libraries samba is linked to with the ldd command.
ie: ldd /usr/local/sbin/smbd

running the ldconfig command to put /opt/MIT-Kerberos/lib ahead of
/usr/lib didn't help.

I've got it to work - finally - by installing mit kerberos over the top
of hiemdal kerberos. But it sure wasn't pretty, and is definitely not a
long term solution.

Eddie
I'm having the exact same problem Skif. It has to do with a conflict
between Heimdal Kerberos (installed by default for ssh etcetera) and MIT
Kerberos. If you don't install krb5, then samba-devel port will install

use ads then get rid of krb5 and remake samba-devel, and it should work.

[Samba] Workaround found, .Xauthority and SMB, Mounting home directory

2004-05-18 Thread John Newbigin
But, note this FACT: with the home directory mounted as SMBFS (
?which
doesn't
support locking?) you cannot run X with the .Xauthority being written
in
your
home directory. You get the following error: xauth: error in
locking authority file /home/ben_ford/.Xauthority
xauthority and some other tools (ice) do some strange things with hard
links to try and work better over nfs. This breaks on smbfs unless you
are using the unix extensions.
Unfortunately, some other tools like gconf do even more stupid things
which require delete on close semantics which do not work over smbfs.
The only workaround for that is to use /tmp (or another local
filesystem) or disable locking in gconf (there are patches available and
RH might include them).

usermgr.exe from microsoft seems to work quite well for this.

AFAIK, I have added users and defined things using the usermgr.exe.

I use W2KP and WXPP as the machine I run it on. Works for me.

[Samba] printing from W98 to Samba/Cups [repost]

2004-05-18 Thread fredex
[repost]

I've recently set up a TAO Linux box, which has SAmba 3.0.2 and Cups 1.1.17.

I have a Lexmark Optra Color 40 Postscript inkjet printer directly
attached to the parallel port, and working.

After considerable pain I was able to get XP Home to print to that printer
(using the 15 step method, as the simple method kept refusing to work).

Now I'm trying to get Windoze 98 to print to the same printer. The XP is
on a separate box, but the '98 is in a VM Ware Workstation session. I can
browse to the linux host, in '98, see and access its shares, and can even
configure the printer in windows. But when printing to it, nothing useful
happens. Windows thinks it succeeded. The printer's busy light blinks for
a minute or two then stops but no paper ever appears.

note that this is the same symptoms I had wiht XP before I found the
lengthy samba/cups documentation.

Unfortunately, that documentation does not tell how to set up printing
from W98 to samba/cups, and trying the same method does not work for me.

Can someone point me in the right direction please?

Fred

PS: I can boot a Knoppix Cd in the VMware workstation, and use it to
configure printing on a SMB printer pointing to the same Lexmark printer
share on the linux host, and it works fine. So, since both Knoppix and XP
can print successfully on the shared printer, I believe it must be set up
properly.

Here's the smb.conf.file:

[Samba] one samba server two workgroups, posible?

Hi, this is a questions that is ticking around my head some time:

I'd like to have one samba server listening on two different subnets:
subnet 1 workgroup 1
subnet 2 workgroup 2

Is it posible? Need I two instances of samba running on the same server?

Now for a few times I need to give service to workgroup 2 I restart with a
different smb.conf

Forgive me if this is stupid or I missed something on the docs, I swear I

[Samba] Samba 3.0.4 PDC w/ LDAP - XP client

2004-05-18 Thread Stefan G. Weichinger

Hello,

I am currently trying to set up my Samba 3.0.4 testbox to be a PDC for
a MS Windows XP Pro SP1 box.

I am using the latest smbldap-tools from IDEALX and I have really
REALLY tried to do things right. Followed their manual...

I cleaned my setup three times today and started from scratch ...

Managed to join my DOMAIN yesterday but right now no chance.

Read TOSHARG, OReilly`s "Using Samba", browsed the web and the
list-archives ...

logs look fine, reg.patches applied, uid=0 used, machines and users in
the same ou=Users ...

Still the XP-box tells me "Access denied" ...

--

Basic question:

What is the current way to go?

There are quite a few LDAP-PDC-HOWTOs out there, each differs a bit
and none works for me ...

--

I am aware of the fact that I am missing something which will seem
clear to me AFTER I get pointed to it. That is the whole truth about
learning, isn't it?

thanks ...

You might need to do a build-depends before you try to build Samba.

You might choose to get the deb-src package for 3.0.2a and transfer the
Debian directory to the 3.0.4 source. This is a very quick workaround...
do the proper editing for 3.0.4 and all things should build very well.
They did for me.

[Samba] Samba 3.0.x infrastructure

2004-05-18 Thread William Jojo

I've been batting my head against a wall trying to come up with a solution
to what seems to be a trivial problem and I need a really good answer.

We have 3 Samba 2.2.8a DC's. We want to keep 3 DC's when we go to Samba 3,
but want the same password for text username regardless of the domain
being logged into *AND* we want the same RID to uid mapping *AND* we want
LDAP for posixAccounts and some SambaSAMAccount info with password
syncronization *AND* we want to keep all the profiles we have now.

Please tell me I'm reading the doc's correctly in seeing that I can have
"passdb backend" and "idmap backend, ldap idmap suffix" in conjunction
with my LDAP RFC2307 database and I have complete control over the mapping
information and I can convert my three DC's to Samba 3 and preserve all
permission information especially internal to the NTUSER.DAT files if I
take the time to write a simple script to populate
"ou=idmap,dc=hvcc,dc=edu" with all the possible uidNumber and gidNumber
values.

All AIX uids are >1000 and we can populate the Well know gids. Since we're
using smbpasswd for passdb now, it's all algorithmic anyway and the AIX
registry will be using the builtin LDAP method (similar to Andrew's
WINBIND)

This way I can keep all the current roaming profiles, I don't have to
use winbindd at all and no one will know that we've performed such an
overhaul. I think we're ready to convert. And we have all the scripts
inhouse to maintain the LDAP backend consistency and we'll populate the
idmap entries when we create the UNIX accounts.

Can anyone please tell me I have this correct?

I know metze wants to push it in samba4, and there were patches for
Samba 2.2 around. Now that we can see how MS does it, there is a chance
we can correctly frame our implementation.

If you read the error you get from Windows when you login it tells you
how to fix the problem.

Basically, the actual profiles directories are supposed to be owned by
the profile user. A good measure would also to have the group as the
designated Domain-Admin group (mine is admins or @admins for the *NIX
group admins) I also have mapped a few Microsoft needed groups to the
proper *NIX groups.

Here is a listing of what I am saying:

from my smb.conf:
[global]
logon script = login.bat
logon path = \\myserver\profiles\%U
logon drive = h:
logon home = \\myserver\%U

[profiles]
comment = Profiles
path = /home/samba/profiles
force user = %U
force group = admins
read only = No
create mask = 0600
directory mask = 0770

My login.bat:

TITLE Domain Login Script
net time \\myserver /set /y
net use h: /home
net use s: \\myserver\data
net use w: \\myserver\music
net use y: \\myserver\cvs
net use z: \\myserver\depot

:quit

that was a simplified login.bat

Here is other important pieces.

ls -ld /home/samba/profiles

drwxrwxrwx 11 root admins 4096 May 11 14:55 profiles

Listing of the profiles directory.

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:profiles]$ ls -l /home/samba/profiles/
total 36
drwxrwx--- 13 greg admins 4096 May 6 09:40 greg

drwxrwx---2 user99 admins 4096 May 7 11:27 user99

Of course you see I have changed everything to be generic but correct.
This roaming profile setup works for me and will for you too.

Good luck.

Re: [Samba] winbind fails

2004-05-18 Thread Majeed
I have been having the same problem with winbind for quite a while now
and have researched up and down, but I canât get the problem resolved. I
have dealing with this since 3.0.2. I then moved to 3.0.2a, then to
3.0.3pre2 since the release notes stated a crash fix when in ads mode,
then to 3.0.3 since it was a production release and then to 3.0.4 since
some memory leaks and socket handling issues were fixed in winbind. I
will now illustrate my problem.

Info:
- 4 windows 2000 domain controllers
- linux box joins the domain and uses Kerberos active directory
authentication to shares
- distribution: Gentoo 1.4
- kernel 2.4.26 (stock sources)
- current version of samba: 3.0.4
- If anything else is need please let me know
- configure command to compile:
./configure --prefix=/usr --sysconfdir=/etc/samba --localstatedir=/var
--libdir=/usr/lib/samba
--with-privatedir=/etc/samba/private --with-lockdir=/var/cache/samba
--with-piddir=/var/run/samba
--with-swatdir=/usr/share/swat --with-configdir=/etc/samba
--with-logfilebase=/var/log/samba
--enable-static --enable-shared --with-manpages-langs=en
--without-spinlocks --with-libsmbclient
--with-automount --with-smbmount --with-winbind --with-syslog
--with-idmap --with-ldap
--with-ads --with-krb5 --with-pam

Problem:
After compiling and installing samba and copying the pam_winbind.so,
libnss_winbind.so, and libnss_wins.so files to the appropriate
directories I then start samba and winbind using a startup script. It
takes about 30sec to a minute for authentication to start working
(probably winbind talking to the DCs). Once it starts authenticating it
works GREAT and will continue to do so for a period of 3 days to a week.
Once it hits a certain point winbind will no longer authenticate. Since
I have having this problem for a while now, I have been monitoring
winbindd. It seems that around 3 hours after I start winbindd sockets in
the CLOSE_WAIT state will start accumulating when I run the netstat
âantupo command. All the sockets in this state are owned by the winbindd
process. They will never close unless I kill the winbindd process. Once
the number of CLOSE_WAITs accumulate up around 1000 it will cause
winbindd to stop authenticating, samba to crash, and I will not be able
to ssh in (I can connect, I can authenticate, but after I successfully
authenticate ssh shoots back a signal 11 error and drops the
connection). I believe the ssh problem is caused by winbind because of
all sockets and port numbers it has tied up in the close_wait state.
Once I restart winbindd and sshd everything works fine again until that
certain amount of time. After doing much research I found that it is
usually the application that is not closing the socket correctly, due to
a bug. At first I thought it might be the kernel so I upgraded from
2.4.25 to 2.4.26 but the same symptoms came about. After that I was
reading a developers forum and someone said that if you kill the process
that owns the sockets in the close_wait state and they disappear then it
is not a kernel issue. Also during the monitoring of winbindd I noticed
that amount of memory consumption steadily increases (maybe a leak?). I
wanted to be able to show the developers and everyone else what I was
seeing so I wrote a script and tossed in a cronjob to run every hour 10
minutes after the hour. The script runs the following commands and spits
the output to a text file. This isn't the entire script but it is the
meat of it.

LOG_FILE=`date +%F_%H.%M%P_winbind_info.log`
PREFIX=/var/log/winbind/
ps aux | grep PID >> $PREFIX$LOG_FILE
ps aux | grep winb >> $PREFIX$LOG_FILE
ps aux | grep mbd >> $PREFIX$LOG_FILE
cat "/proc/`cat /var/run/samba/winbindd.pid`/status" >> $PREFIX$LOG_FILE
netstat -antupo >> $PREFIX$LOG_FILE
I put the all the logs starting from the minute I started winbindd up
until now on a webpage for people to see. They are in order by date and
time and you will be able to see how things progress, memory usage, and
the close_wait problem. Hopefully the developers can use this
information. If not it would be great if anyone has any idea on why I
have all these CLOSE_WAITS. I am replying to a previous post that
created, but back then I was just going to upgrade to see if I still had
the same problems. And I did, as you can see. Any insight would be
great. I would be glad to entertain any questions or tests that people
would like me to try. I have a test server and a production server and
this problem happens on both.

[Samba] Hi again timur

2004-05-18 Thread Tom Skeren
I am completely frustrated at this point. The following is not meant
against you personally, but I'm the ONLY I.T. person for 100 users in 6
different offices, and I don't know what to do at this point but beg.

I finally figured out what Heimdal is, and I believe is the main
problem. Installed 5.2.1 on a machine. Installed krb5 from ports.
Changed make.conf adding KRB5_HOME=/usr/local. Rebooted. Got the
newest port for samba-devel. Did make, make depends, make install. Try
"net ads testjoin". Machine responds "ADS support not compiled in".
Either I get it compiled in but net ads join/testjoin always error out
because of some incompatibility in Heimdal Kerberos, or this happens. I
really am getting up against a wall here. I've gotta get this thing
working. It took me three hours to do this on a Redhat machine. I've
been trying to do the same thing in FreeBSD for three weeks straight.
I really don't want to rebuild all of my servers with Redhat, I don't
know Redhat very well at all, and that means replacing 4 production
servers. I could really use a bit of help.

[Samba] samba 3.0.4 - smb´s not starting

2004-05-18 Thread Jorge Kramer
Hi

I just installed samba 3.0.4 (upgrade form 3.0.0 which
has some nasty bugs) and there are some things I
dont´t understand. First, testparm is looking for my
smb.conf file in /usr/lib, thought it should be in
/usr/local/samba/lib (at least this is what Makefile
is telling). Anyway, smb.conf is only in /etc/samba
and I had to do a symbolic link between those 2
location, so tesparm should know.
Second, samba is not starting. Both smbd and nmbd are
stopped, I can see that
root# service smb status
smbd is stopped
nmbd is stopped

but when I try to start smb I get a message
root# service smb start
Starting SMB services: execvp: No such file or
directory [FAILED]
Starting NMB services: execvp: No such file or
directory
 [FAILED]

I have another question: upgrading means that samba
config file will be changed? I know, a silly question
but I have to ask because I didn´t find the answer in
samba howto.

Hope you will help me with an aswer and a way to solve
my problem.

best,
Jorge

[Samba] Cups spool directory permissions

Mates,

Have 2.2.8a on SuSE 9.0 pro. I have a hp lj4 connected to the parallel
port on the machine. Printing is with cups. After setting up the printer on
the SuSE box I could print from the SuSE box but not from the XP clients.
Under the printers share in smb.conf I set path = /var/spool/samba, created
the directory, chown nobody.nobody and chmod 777. I can now print from XP,
but is there a better way of doing this??

If you're already running winbindd, the easiest way is to probably add
wins to the hosts line of your nsswitch.conf, and rely on
{job-originating-host-name} in your cups banner. At the very least you
will have the client's ip address, but with WINS in your nsswitch.conf
you should be able to resolve these.

Alternately you might be able to specify a print command in smb.conf
that passes %m as a print option or something, but I couldn't tell you
if cups would accept something like this for sure...

~ Daniel

Re: [Samba] Help Samba Virtual Servers (Host aliases) configuration problem

2004-05-18 Thread Schlomo Schapiro
Hi,

use the include feature together with the %L parameter, like in
smb.conf(5):

%L the NetBIOS name of the server. This allows you to
change your config based on what the client calls
you. Your server can have a "dual personality".

Note that this paramater is not available when
Samba listens on port 445, as clients no longer
  send this information

So if you use port 445, then it won't work. You can still try to use
another of the many % variables.

Another way is to define IP aliases and start several smbd each for a
different IP alias. See the following parameters:

bind interfaces only
interfaces

(Note that only one should have 127.0.0.1 and you might have to set that
one as the master and the others as security=server and password
server=127.0.0.1 so that the many smbd daemons won't step on their
respective feet)

RE: [Samba] Unix Extensions

2004-05-18 Thread Shannon Johnson
I looked at the changelog for 3.0.3 and 3.0.4 and noticed a few things
referencing the unix extensions in the 3.0.3 update. Just to be safe, I
installed 3.0.4 and am still having the same problem.

On the server, I have "unix extensions = yes" set under the share name
in the smb.conf. The client has Samba 3.0.2, but I can upgrade to 3.0.4
if you think it'll help at all...

When I test it, I type "mount -t smbfs //hostname/share /mnt/point
-o,username=user,workgroup=WRKGRP" to mount it, then go into the
/mnt/point directory and type "ln -s oldfile newlink". When I do that
now, I get an "Operation not permitted" error. Yes, I have full
permissions on the directory, and can create new files and everything...
so that's not it. Am I missing something? Is there another option for
the mounting command that I should use?

RE: [Samba] Cannot connect MacOSX domain member to PDC

2004-05-18 Thread Huyler, Christopher M
There are several things wrong with your smb.conf file...

First, you should not have a netbios name and a workgroup with the same
name...I think you may be confusing yourself. There is nothing wrong
with it, but I don't think that is what you intend. Think of the
workgroup as the domain name and the netbios name as the machine name.

Your PDC Solaris machine should at least have the following:
(substitute HOME for your preferred domain name)

netbios name = Sun280
workgroup = HOME
security = domain
domain logons = Yes
domain master = Yes
preferred master = Yes
encrypt passwords = yes

And your domain member OSX machine should AT LEAST have the following:
(substitute HOME for the domain name you used above)

netbios name = G5server
workgroup = HOME
security = domain
domain logons = No
domain master = No
encrypt passwords = yes
password server = Sun280

Once you set all that up you should be able to simply call:

net join -S Sun280 -U username%password

You do not need to specify both the server name and ip address, and it
will pick up the workgroup/domain from the server which will be the same
as "HOME" in the above examples anyway. The username and password
should be of an account that has privileges to add machines to the
domain.

Also, depending on your PDC settings, you may have to create a machine
account before running "net join...".

Is that the problem?? Will an Apple (Samba3.0) only join a domain runing

Integrating Customer Data - The Lifeblood of CRM
An Online Seminar Featuring Ted Friedman of Gartner, Inc. with Special Guest Adam
Gross, Salesforce.com

Date: June 8, 2004
Time: 2:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. ET
11:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. PT

Key to success of any business initiative such as CRM is tackling the cost drivers
around customer data integration. Compounding this challenge is the need to gather and
integrate customer data from widely disparate sources, across multiple platforms and
environments, and between both new and legacy systems-all on either a batch, regularly
scheduled or on a real-time, event driven basis.

These difficult integration challenges often require extensive custom coding and over
the course of time consume an increasing amount of development time and costs in
proportion to the complexity of task. Instead of getting more out of costly
development resources by committing them to revenue producing projects, custom
software integration bleeds those resources for little or no additional value.

Today, companies require an approach that allows the integration and exchange of
customer data with other business systems without the need for time consuming and
costly code.

Speeding Time to Value on CRM

Please join featured speaker, Ted Friedman of Gartner, Inc. with guest speaker, Adam
Gross of Salesforce.com and Mike Hoskins of Pervasive Software to learn:

- Why customer data integration is the critical building block of CRM and the key to
unlocking customer value
- What are the hidden costs within CRM - data acquisition and customer data
integration issues and what you should do to control these costs
- What are the capabilities necessary for end users and IT organizations to meet their
CRM customization, integration and extension challenges in record time and with record
success

Re: [Samba] Help Samba Virtual Servers (Host aliases) configuration problem

2004-05-18 Thread Romeyn Prescott
I'm replying to this old message just to say that I am trying to do
the same thing and it's not working. I have done everything as this
person has, and no matter which host a Windows box visits, they see
the same shares.

Is it not possible to set up netbios aliases which each present
separate shares?

Thanks,
...ROMeyn
At 4:58 PM +0200 7/8/03, Poletto Davide scribbled:
Hi,
I need to create one or more NetBIOS host alias of my unique SAMBA server
version 2.27 which is running on a RedHat Linux 8.0 box acting as a simple
file-sharing machine for our WORKGROUP.
I need that my clients see three differents host more than the real
fileserver;
I think the scope of virtual server was based on which virtual host I'll
contact I'll see the relative share: so everyone will see FILESERVER share,
everyone who conntacts ALIAS1 will see ALIAS1 share (and FILESERVER share
due to include mechanism...) and so on.
This is part of my actual "smb.conf" file on /etc/samba directory:
[global]
workgroup = WORKGROUP
netbios name = FILESERVER
netbios aliases = ALIAS1 ALIAS2 ALIAS3
include = /etc/samba/smb.conf.%L
server string = SAMBA %v on %h
[SHARE]
comment = FILESERVER share
path = /home/share
printable = no
writable = yes
valid users = @filesharing
write list = @filesharing
...then I have edited three separate smb.conf.%L (%L substituted with each
alias NetBIOS name) under /etc/samba directory:
smb.conf.ALIAS1
smb.conf.ALIAS2
smb.conf.ALIAS3
each of theese configuration files has only a share section (No [global]
section) with this style:
smb.conf.ALIAS1 has
[ALIAS1]
comment = ALIAS1 share
path = /home/share_alias1
printable = no
writable = yes
valid users = @filesharing
write list = @filesharing
smb.conf.ALIAS2 has
[ALIAS2]
comment = ALIAS2 share
path = /home/share_alias2
printable = no
writable = yes
valid users = @filesharing
write list = @filesharing
and so on for ALIAS3.
It doesn't work properly because it seems that the variable %L will not
"set" as it would by the client connect request.
Each client inside my workgroup see effectively three different hosts
(virual hosts) ALIAS1, ALIAS2 and ALIAS3 plus the real fileserver FILESERVER
but if I'll try to connect with ALIAS1 I'll see only the /home/share of
SHARE and not this one plus/and ALIAS1 /home/share_alias1 of ALIAS1!
The same if I'll trying to connect to ALIAS2 or ALIAS3...
It seems that include mechanism doesn't work properly.
Could anyone help me setting up this configuration files properly?

On a related note, what's the point of having every user connected as
root and also use a write list, specially for other users besides root?
What is the expected behaviour here? Wouldn't it be best to use "valid
users" instead of the write list? I'm a little confused about this scenario.

What takes precedence, force user or write list?

[Samba] secure SSL connection to openldap server fails

2004-05-18 Thread Daniel Campbell
I am having trouble getting the Samba version 3.0.4 to connect securely to
my openldap backend. I am using straight SSL and not TLS but it still seems
like it is trying to connect using TLS. The samba and the openldap server
are on the same machine and I can connect to the ldap server using a ldap
browser via ssl without a problem so I know the ldap server is running
correctly. My config is below, am I missing something or have something
configured wrong? I used to have this working in the past. It works fine
if it is not encrypted and I connect to localhost on port 389. The issue is
eventually these two servers will be on different subnets/machines so I want

The patch is quite long as I had to fix the "wide links" parameter at
the same time - it might just be better to take a snapshot of the
current subversion code.

This may come off sounding rude, and I certainly don't intend it to, but
I'm a bit "under the gun" at the moment... do you have a patch or an
alternative I could try for the time being? I'm using Red Hat Enterprise
3, so anything that works with that would be great.

P.S. I've been trying for hours to get CIFS installed, and it's just not
working well. When I make a kernel module for it, I get a few

There was a bug in this code (it wasn't being heavily tested). I have
fixed it in the current subversion head and it hopefully might make

John,

The only way I got this to work was to be logged in as root at a Windows
workstation.

Start > Run > \\sambaserver

Open the Printers folder (for the Samba server). If there is no APW
icon, you have a permissions problem (that could be in many different
places) that needs fixing first. If you do have an APW icon,
right-click on any white space in the icon container, choose Server
Properties, and follow the prompts to add the printer drivers to the
server. If the buttons to add drivers are greyed out, you still have a
permissions issue(but you are much closer than if you have no APW
icon!)

John's latest book, Samba3 By Example, has better instructions on this
than TOSHARG; highly recommended (both, actually)!

Mark

[Samba] Samba, Cups, Windows driver and PPD File updates

2004-05-18 Thread Robert M. Martel
Greetings,
I am using Samba (both 2.2.8a and 3.0.4) on servers running CUPS and
have used cupsaddsmb to make the Cups drivers available for download to
the client PCs. Everything has been working as it should.

I need to make some changes to the PPD files on the CUPS servers. The
question I have is about propagating the changes to the client PCs.

I can either hand edit the copy of the PPD under the PRINT$, or I could
re-run cupsaddsmb (I think) to pick-up may changed Cups PPD - but (how)
will the client PCs that already have the driver loaded for a given
printer "learn" of the change to the PPD file? I see that copies of the
PPD end up under c:\WINNT\system32\spool\drivers\2

I've looked over the docs and mailing list archives but if this topic is
mentioned I have missed it..

Will the users need to disconnect and reconnect the printers? Will they
need to disconnect from the printer, remove the current driver from the
PC, then reconnect? Will thinks work like magic and I am worrying about
nothing?

I am trying to minimize the confusion that any change causes among our
students.

Thanks in advance for any hints or ideas.

[Samba] Sluggish server response

2004-05-18 Thread Chris Garrigues
A user who had not been using the server for about half an hour
had to wait for over a minute before the samba server would respond.

This is using samba3-server-3.0.2a-2mdk. I hope to upgrade to 3.0.4 as soon
as Buchan has the RPM ready.

In the below log, the user tried to log in at about 10:27 or so. I think
I'm not learning anything from this log, so I've also attached part of

[Samba] research inquiry

2004-05-18 Thread Justin Orndorff
Greetings,
I'm currently doing research into corporate contributions towards open
source projects, such as Linux. One of the recent Credits Files lists Mr.
Anton Blanchard as a contributor. Is Mr. Blanchard still an employee with
the company?

Also, does the company have any policies regarding open source contributions
by employees? If so, are there any differences between on and off the clock
contributions?

Thanks very much for your time and apologies for posting on your mailing
list. I did not find any other contacts on your website related to this side
of your business.

Best,
Justin Orndorff

[Samba] Contradiction in samba documentation

2004-05-18 Thread Sahibzada Junaid Noor
Hi,

I have found some contradictions in the samba
documentation. i am writing them down here so if you
can please verify them.

in heading 4.3.3 of the documentation it says

" When samba is operating in security = domain mode
, the samba server has a domain security trust account
( a machine account) and causes all authentication
requests to be passed through to the domain
controllers."

ok this means the windows domain controller is going
to do the authentication, authorizing stuff.

 now look here

under heading 7.3 there is a note which says

" when samba is configured to use an LDAP , or other
indentity management and or directory service , it is
samba that continues to perform user and machine
authentication. it should be noted that the LDAP
server does not perform authentication handling in
place of what samba is designed to do"

now what does this means?

according to 4.3.3 samba sends all authentication
requests to the windows AD. in 7.3 it says that it
doesnt send requests at all. then why will it use an
LDAP backend?

plz comment on this.

[Samba] Unix Extensions

2004-05-18 Thread Shannon Johnson
I have a Samba 3 server, and a client with Samba 3. The server has a
share for home directories, and the client is trying to mount it, but
after it's mounted, I still can't create any symbolic links. Also, the
GUI login (Red Hat Enterprise default) isn't working, but I think that's
just a symptom of the symbolic and hard links not working.

Any idea why, when I enable unix extensions on the server, I still can't
make a symbolic link? Am I missing something here?

kerberos as authentication for shares, so "security = ADS".

I have the same problem (bug 1319) on my print$ share (Printer Driver Upload
share) for CUPS printers. After upgrading to 3.0.4 I couldn't upload printer drivers
anymore, I received the following message when I used the APW for installing a new
driver: "Printer x not installed; access denied" (or a message like that).
My print$ share looks like this:

[print$]
comment = Printer Driver Download Area
path = /etc/samba/drivers
write list = root, '@TEST.COM\Domain Admins',
@TEST.COM\DEP_ADMIN_GERMANY
force user = root
guest ok = Yes

This means this share is standard in "read-only" mode and it uses the "write list" for
write access.

I had to add "read only = No" to the print$ share, so I could upload printer drivers.
For now I can use "read only = No" if I have to upload printer drivers and "read only
=
Yes" when I'm finished, but it is just a workaround...

Regards,
Alex.

[Samba] bogus login

2004-05-18 Thread Henrik Vendelbo
Howdy wizards,

Somehow I managed to bungle my Fedora Core server on the Samba access.

I had it working nicely. Without LDAP authentication, I think.

Then I was working on Jakarata Slide/WebDAV with LDAP authentication for a
bit.

Now I get a guest login whenever I try to access the samba folders. I cannot
change user, only enter
guest password, what might be the problem ???

Hopefully you know a solution,

Henrik

[Samba] SWAT seems to corrupt WINS SERVER line if multiples are specified

2004-05-18 Thread Hall, Ken (IDS ECCS)
We use real Windows WINS servers, and after a couple of availability problems, we
learned that we could specify multiple addresses on this parameter, and use both our
primary and fallback servers.

At first, I had problems getting it to work, but after looking at the code, I found
that the list of addresses had to be separated by semicolons. Since then, I've
specified the parm as two addresses, with just a semicolon and no space between. This
has worked through several upgrades of 2.2.x.

We recently upgraded a couple of our servers to 3.0.2a and 3.0.4, and discovered that
SWAT changes this list to two addresses separated by a comma and space. Examination
of level 10 trace of the nmbd startup seems to indicate that the second WINS server is
not recognized when this format is used.

Did I miss something? Should both formats be valid? Or is SWAT generating the wrong
format?

RE: [Samba] Cannot connect MacOSX domain member to PDC

2004-05-18 Thread Huyler, Christopher M
What is it that you have tried so far? Post your server and client
smb.conf files as well as the exact error so we can get a better grasp
of the problem.

You should also take a look at the "Directory Access" application in
/Applications/Utilities if you haven't already. It will allow you to
use Active Directory or LDAP to authenticate your username/password when
you login. Before you do that, though, you do need to join the domain
with samba using "net ads|rpc join -S servername -U username". You
might be getting the master browser errors because you are not
specifying the server.

Subject: [Samba] Cannot connect MacOSX domain member to PDC

I have a PDC which is a Sun280R with Solaris 8 running PCNetlink2.0
(effectively a WindowsNT4.0 server)

I want to join a Apple G5 with MacOSX10.3.3 (Samba 3.0) as a domain
member of the above PDC.

It will not allow me to do this and has lots of "master browser -
unknown" in the logs of the Apple.

I have the IP address in the same range as the PDC and have the netmask
set the same also.

I can make the Apple a standalone server and can then map a drive in a
windows client, but it is still not seen in "Network Neighbourhood".

Has anybody had/seen these issues with Apples before and can pass on any
help.

Tony

[Samba] Problem with VFS audit and recycle (fwd)

2004-05-18 Thread William R. Knox
This problem continues under 3.0.4 on Solaris 8 - attempting to use the
"vfs object" parameter in a share prevents access to the share and results
in the following in the log files:

[2004/05/10 16:04:57, 0] lib/module.c:do_smb_load_module(57)
Error trying to resolve symbol 'init_module' in
/usr/local/lib/vfs/audit.so: ld.so.1: /usr/local/sbin/smbd: fatal:

[2004/05/10 16:04:57, 0] smbd/service.c:make_connection_snum(502)
vfs_init failed for service Admin area

Access to the other shares remains unaffected. This is currently happening
with ANY module that I have used, not just audit. I would be happy to
perform any stack trace that is required - however, smbd does not appear
to be panicking, so I am unsure exactly how to proceed with that.

[Samba] Samba 2.2.7: Access to differents shares from the same NT client

2004-05-18 Thread Jean-Philippe BATTU

Hello

I have a linux box RH90 with samba 2.2.7a installed.
my windows client is running NT40.

is it possible to access from this same clients two differents
share on the linux box, with the identity of two different
linux user accounts.

For example my smb.conf looks like :

[global]
security = user
encrypt passwords = yes
...

[share1]
path = /home/user1
valid users = user1
user = user1
...

[share2]
path = /home/user2
valid users = user2
user = user2

I would like to access to these shares with user1 and user2 following
the share used. For the moment, I get an error from NT after one
established share telling me the identity ressource is already used (it
is the translation of the message get in French !)

Thanks for your help

You have to change the path to your printer spool as defined in
smb.conf. The path under the printer share in smb.conf may have to be
changed. Can you post the relevant section of your smb.conf here ?

Do you have any logon script, btw? It may also be messing up things.

[Samba] Cannot connect MacOSX domain member to PDC

2004-05-18 Thread Tony Baker

Has anybody had/seen these issues with Apples before and can pass on any
help.

Regards

Tony

[Samba] Profiles and Service Packs

2004-05-18 Thread dael

Hello,

i'm using samba 3.04 as Server and Windows 2k as Client.
After Updating the win machines to service-pack 4 a profile problem
encountered. The Profile could not be loaded after login (wrong
Permissions). Reading the manpage I found the profile acls Parameter
and set it to yes onto the Profile share...nothing changed.

A Friend told me, that the Profile Folder has to be inside the
Home-Directory to get it work. Is this correct?? I do not want this.

Thanks,

Re: [Samba] Sharing with permission

2004-05-18 Thread Bob Sullivan
We recently upgraded one of our Mandrake servers to 10 Official with Samba 3
and found that we could not get USER security to work. We had used the KDE
GUI to setup Samba but with little success. We un-installed all Samba
options and reinstalled omitting the KDE GUI interface. We configured Samba
3 using SWAT and USER security worked without any trouble whatsoever. We
have always used SWAT and rightly consider it the only accurate way to setup
Samba unless you really are a Samba guru.

On Samba 3 we have an unresolved problem with nmbd shutting down when there
are no workstations active on the network. We understand this is a known
issue and would appreciate knowing where we can obtain a Mandrake package for
Samba 3.0.4 as we believe the issue was resolved in 3.0.4.

Regards,
Bob

[Samba] Odd behaviour while mounting a cifs volume

2004-05-18 Thread Charles Nadeau
I tried to mount a volume using cifs as the filesystem type. I am using the
cifs 1.02 patch on kernel version 2.4.22. The machine holding the disks is
a WinXP Pro machine.

When I use plain vanilla mount with cifs as the filesystem, I get:

Mosix4 / # mount -t cifs //192.168.0.3/Fukuoka_c /fukuoka/c -o
username=Administrator,pass=passw0rd,ro
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on
//192.168.0.3/Fukuoka_c,
or too many mounted file systems

But if I use mount.cifs instead, I get:

Mosix4 / # mount.cifs //192.168.0.3/Fukuoka_c /fukuoka/c -o
username=Administrator,pass=passw0rd,ro

No error message, it works!
If I substitute the IP address by the name of the machine, it doesn't
work.

Mosix4 / # mount.cifs //Fukuoka/Fukuoka_c /fukuoka/c -o
username=Administrator,pass=passw0rd,ro
mount error: could not find target server. TCP name Fukuoka/Fukuoka_c
not
found  rc = 9
mount error 22 = Invalid argument
Refer to the mount.cifs(8) manual page (e.g.man mount.cifs)

I am not really concerned by this last error message, I know why I get
it.
What really bugs me is why the fist statement doesn't work while the
second
one does. They are almost the same. What is the subtle difference?
Could somebody shed a bit of light of this one?
Thanks!

Charles

Thank you for the info. I already upgraded samba to

unless I have a hope that error wont come up again.

Since the new cups win driver 6.0 will be released in

please recommend me some other cups drivers? Because
yes, I am using cups windows drivers 5.0rc3... I want
to use ADOBE only for 98 clients, for XP and 2000 I
hope is a better solution.

Thanks,

[Samba] Samba 3.0.2a on Redhat 7.2

2004-05-18 Thread David Pérez
Hi all,

I am running Samba 3.0.2a on the mode "user" on Redhat 7.2.
Sometimes people can access a shared drive from their home , using XP
professional, sometimes people can't access, as they are continuesly asked
for username and password again.
Inside the office, it works fine, people can access the share drive, it is
only from outside the office, people cannot always log into our office
network (server behind a NETGEAR router (port forwarding 137-139)) and our
connection is BT broad 512 Ko)
What is strange is with the same username and password (and same OS), some
people can access and some people can't.
Any known problem with the version installed on my server?

Thanks :)

David

[Samba] samba 3.0.4 on Debian sid

2004-05-18 Thread Rafal Pietrak
Hi All,

I was wondering if anyone have tried to build v3.0.4 on Debian unstable
(curently it's sid)?

It failed for me, and I had to make changes to packages/Debian/debian/* to
have it go. It looks like the debian directory there comes from quite old
days and samba evolved to the point where not all of it curently apply.

The main problem is, that two chunks of fhs.patch get rejected.

In the patches I include here, those two chunks are removed from fhs.patch
(the new patch is thus included here), and 'currently applicable' versions
of those chunks are in fhs-rp1.patch. I've made this split to allow for
easier inspection. For distribution, those should probably be 'cat-ed'
togather again as fhs.patch replacement.

I also had to change some debian control files to have the package build.
Those changes are in debian-files.patch, which SHOULD NOT be put into
debian/patches as the fhs*.patch should, but applied manually BEFORE
dpkg-buildpackage is run (by doing: patch -p0 ...).

[Samba] username map break in 3.0.4 ?

2004-05-18 Thread Putinas Piliponis
Hello,

I have following username map:
!root = Administrator
nobody = *

in the documentation says what ! should stop processing the list of username maps,
but looks like it doesn't. If I have second line with nobody = * when it maps
Administrator account to nobody
if I remove nobody = * then it gives root access to administrator account. With
version 3.0.2 this way was working fine.
I chech the debuging output, first it maps administrator account to root, and after
for some reason to nobody...
If it's matters I have security = domain and OS is freebsd 5.2.1
Do I miss something or this is a bug ?

   security = domain

# This option is important for security. It allows you to restrict
# connections to machines which are on your local network. The
# following example restricts access to two C class networks and
# the "loopback" interface. For more examples of the syntax see
# the smb.conf man page
; hosts allow = 192.168.1. 192.168.2. 127.

# If you want to automatically load your printer list rather

# load printers = yes

# you may wish to override the location of the printcap file
; printcap name = /etc/printcap

# on SystemV system setting printcap name to lpstat should allow
# you to automatically obtain a printer list from the SystemV spool
# system
; printcap name = lpstat

# It should not be necessary to specify the print system type unless
# it is non-standard. Currently supported print systems include:
# bsd, cups, sysv, plp, lprng, aix, hpux, qnx
; printing = cups

# Uncomment this if you want a guest account, you must add this to
/etc/passwd
# otherwise the user "nobody" is used
; guest account = pcguest

# this tells Samba to use a separate log file for each machine
# that connects
   log file = /var/log/samba/samba.%m

# Put a capping on the size of the log files (in Kb).
   max log size = 5

# Use password server option only with security = server

# on a per machine basis. The %m gets replaced with the netbios name
# of the machine that is connecting.
# Note: Consider carefully the location in the configuration file of
# this line. The included file is read at that point.

# Configure Samba to use multiple interfaces
# If you have multiple network interfaces then you must list them

# Browser Control Options:
# set local master to no if you don't want Samba to become a master

; local master = no

# OS Level determines the precedence of this server in master browser

# Domain Master specifies Samba to be the Domain Master Browser. This
# allows Samba to collate browse lists between subnets. Don't use this
# if you already have a Windows NT domain controller doing this job
; domain master = yes

# Preferred Master causes Samba to force a local browser election on
startup
# and gives it a slightly higher chance of winning the election
; preferred master = yes
