SL 5.9 yum-conf questions.
Hello, I am a bit confused with yum-conf versus yum-conf-5x which I used to use, by doing : yum -y shell yum-5x with yum-5x containing : erase yum-conf install yum-conf-5x run exit So I have a few questions about that. It seems I cannot remove any more yum-conf as it contains other repos. Isit OK to just disable sl-security.repo andenable sl5x-security.repo ? I also noticed that there is no longer [sl-security-jdk] to disable gpgcheck for jdk, is it normal ? Very stange DHCP problem with SL5.4
Hello, After installing 9 new desktops with DHCP I changed the network config to static IP and restart the network. But they are still requesting DHCP adresse. The dhcp server gives them a dynamic IP and then there are no free lease (we have only 5 for guests). It is the first time I see that and I really dont understand what happened. Re: Problem Compiling the Kernel (solved)
- Original message from Luis Torres on 2007-08-09 +0100 at 15:34:46- Hi Troy, Thanks for the hint. It is now working. However it involved a few more steps, which might be evident for someone more experienced, but here it is as it might be helpful for someone else: I had kernel 2.6.18-8.1.3 instaled and the latest is now 2.6.18-8.1.8 so I did as suggested: yum install kernel-devel (brought in *-8.1.8) yum install kernel (installed latest version and I rebooted using it) yum install kernel-headers (Nvidia complained about missing headers and aborted before I did this) I used sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-100.14.11-pkg2.run kernel-source-path /usr/src/kernels/2.6.18-8.1.8.el5-x86_64 Hello, one can also make a nvidia module for an other non running installed kernel with a command like : sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-100.14.11-pkg2.run --kernel-name='2.6.9-55.0.2.EL-smp-x86_64' -K sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-100.14.11-pkg2.run --kernel-name='2.6.9-55.0.2.EL-x86_64' -K -- Cordialement, Robert FRANCHISSEUR Apollo_gist :-)___ | Robert FRANCHISSEUR | | Laboratoire de Météorologie Dynamique - C.N.R.S. | | Equipe R.A.M.S.E.S. - UPMC - Tour 45-55 3ème 315C | | Boite 99 - 4, place JussieuF-75252 PARIS CEDEX 05 FRANCE | | Phone : +33 (0)1 44 27 73 87 fax : +33 (0)1 44 27 62 72 | | e-mail : robert at lmd . jussieu . fr http://www.lmd.jussieu.fr | ---

Re: Loading pcspkr kernel module at boot time?
- Original message from Eva Myers on Fri Apr 27 17:55:59 2007 - I've been having a little trouble with sound not working on my SL44 machines. I remembered having similar trouble when first experimenting with the 2.6 kernel on a Debian system, and discovered that the command modprobe pcspkr would activate the system beep. What I'd like to know is the best way to load this module automatically at boot time. Thanks for any help, Eva. Re: the jed/edt editor and XKeyBoard
- Original message from Alex Finch on Thu Mar 29 11:24:15 2007 - I have not investigated the reason but I have also noticed the effect. I use the tpu-edt mappings in emacs. (It meant I had one less thing to learn when moving from VMS to Linux). I have to issue xmodmap ~/.Xmodmap by hand every time I log in on SL 4.4 ( i use kde). Alex I think that under KDE you can put a little script in your ~/.kde/Autostart folder. For example : ~/.kde/Autostart/xmodmap.sh #! /bin/bash if [ -x /usr/X11R6/bin/xmodmap ] ; then if [ -f .Xmodmap` ] ; then xmodmap .Xmodmap fi fi [...] -- Best regards, Robert FRANCHISSEUR Apollo_gist :-)___ | Robert FRANCHISSEUR | | Laboratoire de Météorologie Dynamique - C.N.R.S. | | Equipe R.A.M.S.E.S. - UPMC - Tour 45-55 3ème 315C | | Boite 99 - 4, place JussieuF-75252 PARIS CEDEX 05 FRANCE | | Phone : +33 (0)1 44 27 73 87 fax : +33 (0)1 44 27 62 72 | | e-mail : robert at lmd . jussieu . fr http://www.lmd.jussieu.fr | ---
Re: the jed/edt editor and XKeyBoard
- Original message from Ken Teh on Wed Mar 28 20:48:36 2007 - Many years ago, I put together a configuration which allowed many of my users to use the Jed editor in EDT emulation mode. The configuration consisted of a VT100 translation table for the xterm application that made use the of PC keypad as an almost 1-1 map of the VT100 keypad. (The PC keypad has a single large + key while the VT100 keypad has 2 keys at this coordinate). The trick to this configuration was remapping the NumLock key with xmodmap. I used xmodmap to translate NumLock to an unused X keycode, in particular, KP_Equal. The xterm VT100 translation table then mapped KP_Equal to the Gold Key. I'm unable to do this with SL4x. Xmodmap's at X session startup are ignored. Apparently, one needs to use the newer XKeyboard mechanism to remap keys. I can remap it interactively after I'm logged in. I took a stab at understanding XKeyboard, but it is poorly documented, at least, from a simple users' perspective. I am hoping someone on this list has some suggestions. I suggested folks quit using Jed, but that didn't get me anywhere. ;) Hello, I use IceWM and I can use xmodmap in my ~/.icewm/startup file ... if [ -f .xmodmap-`hostname -s` ] then xmodmap .xmodmap-`hostname -s` if [ -f .xset-`hostname -s` ] ... ~/.xmodmap-rabeson # for my Dell laptop remove Control = Control_R remove Mod2= Num_Lock keycode 0x4D = Num_LockNum_Lock keycode 0x6C = Shift_R keycode 0x75 = Multi_key keycode 0x6D = Meta_R ! la petite touche i sur laptop Dell keycode 0x81 = F25 addShift = Shift_R addMod2= Meta_R remove Mod2= Alt_R addMod3= F25 addMod5= Alt_R -- Best regards, Robert FRANCHISSEUR Apollo_gist :-)___ | Robert FRANCHISSEUR | | Laboratoire de Météorologie Dynamique - C.N.R.S. | | Equipe R.A.M.S.E.S. - UPMC - Tour 45-55 3ème 315C | | Boite 99 - 4, place JussieuF-75252 PARIS CEDEX 05 FRANCE | | Phone : +33 (0)1 44 27 73 87 fax : +33 (0)1 44 27 62 72 | | e-mail : robert at lmd . jussieu . fr http://www.lmd.jussieu.fr | ---
