   Hello again,

same problem after removing ffmpeg and ffmpeg-libpostproc
   (under SL5.11).

After I removed my .mozilla folder and restart I could
download again but today I noticed I have no sound with
youtube in HTML5 and it is no longer possible to return to
   flash-plugin :(

On other sites which use flash the sound is very poor.

 Hi Chris,

Firefox flags the out-of-date Flash plugin as a security hazard.

   On my yum.log (SL5.11) I saw :

   Nov 26 04:10:27 Updated: flash-plugin-11.2.202.424-release.x86_64
   ...
   Dec 10 05:29:02 Updated: flash-plugin-11.2.202.425-release.x86_64

   butinfirefox plugins it was stillseenas
flash-plugin-11.2.202.424 and blocked as a security hazard.

so I had to remove it and re-install :

   Dec 15 23:40:08 Erased: flash-plugin
   Dec 15 23:41:49 Installed: flash-plugin-11.2.202.425-release.x86_64

SL 5.9 yum-conf questions.

2013-02-11 Thread Franchisseur Robert
Hello,

I am a bit confused with yum-conf versus yum-conf-5x which I used to
use, by doing :

yum -y shell yum-5x

with yum-5x containing :

erase yum-conf
install yum-conf-5x
run
exit

So I have a few questions about that.

It seems I cannot remove any more yum-conf as it contains other
repos.

Isit OK to just disable sl-security.repo andenable
sl5x-security.repo ?

I also noticed that there is no longer [sl-security-jdk] to disable
gpgcheck for jdk, is it normal ?

My previous adobe.repo have been renamed but the new yum-conf-adobe
has not been installed and seems to be empty.

Thanks for your help.

SL5 Live System on USB flash drive problem

2011-04-20 Thread FRANCHISSEUR Robert
Hello,

I made a 'livedvd64_SL55_2010-06-17' on an USB flash drive as explained
in http://www.livecd.ethz.ch/usbdisk_sl4_sl5.html
but when I boot the USB I got a kernel panic :

Failled to execute linuxrc. Attempting defaults...
Kernel panic-not syncing: No init found. Try passing init= option to kernel

What did I miss ?

Thanks for your help.

So I did a diff between initrd.gz on the iso file and the onr on the USB key
and they differ !

I copy again initrd.gz and the boot sequence went further but after
creating /etc/fstab I had an othe Kernel panic.

So I think the problem is with the USB key (brand new (: and I will
try an other one.

think that replacing yum's conf files is the way to go). The most

People at #rhel on Freenode suggested that this is an error in the
yum-conf-5x package which does not use the obsoletes feature of YUM.

So, what shall I do in this case?

   Hello,

what I do which work for me is :

   yum clean all
   yum -y update
   yum -y shell ~/yum-5x
   yum -y update yum
   yum clean all
   yum -y upgrade

   ~/yum-5x contains :

   erase yum-conf
   install yum-conf-5x
   run
   exit

firstboot problem on laptop Dell E6510

is there a way to bypass the probing of the video card during install ?

There is an nvidia card probed on new Dell E6510 laptop which does

anaconda then find the nvidia and X failed.

If not, my second question is: after installing nvidia-x11-drv, is
there a way to have firstboot running on the next reboot (I removed
/etc/sysconfig/firstbootand /var/lock/subsys/firstboot without
success)

Thanks for your help.

Thanks for your answer, but I tried this option and also

I noticed that even after I installed nvidia-x11-drv, rhgb

/etc/modprobe.conf ( thanks to Akemi Yagi)

   3) 'yum --enablerepo=sl-contrib install nvidia-x11-drv' for

   eating 100% cpu.

Disabling nppdf.so and getting firefox to use acroread as a standalone

Slow boot with Kernel 2.6.18-194.x.y on SL5.4

if we suppress 'quiet' we see that the problem is
after the line :

Waiting for driver initialization

and it seems the system is waiting some timeout.

Does anyone know if there is a Bios or kernel parameter to change to
have a faster boot ?

You will find that I have the identical Nvidia controller (note

instability problems with the -194 kernel. A simple workaround is to
  add a line:

The one on which 'enable_msi=0' does nothing is older

I have my dhcp server reply for my static addresses as well as for guests

Ie do the earlier machines upgraded to 5.4 also show the problem ?

If it is just the 760s I'd be looking at the serial-over-LAN

In fact it was in the 760s as in the boot menu there is a new

Very stange DHCP problem with SL5.4

2010-02-10 Thread FRANCHISSEUR Robert
Hello,

After installing 9 new desktops with DHCP I changed the network
config to static IP and restart the network. But they are still
requesting DHCP adresse. The dhcp server gives them a dynamic IP and
then there are no free lease (we have only 5 for guests).

It is the first time I see that and I really dont understand what
happened.

There is no NetworkManager no avahi-daemon no nscd and no clone
interface.

So I have one static IP and one dhcp IP on eth0 I can ping:

seraphine.lmd.jussieu.fr (134.157.47.113) at 00:25:64:9E:CE:A2 [ether] on eth0
shaughnessy.lmd.jussieu.fr (134.157.47.30) at 00:25:64:9E:CE:A2 [ether] on eth0

I removed dhclient but I still see the request on the logs of the
dhcpd server.

Feb 6 15:51:12 moore dhcpd: DHCPREQUEST for 134.157.47.30 from
00:25:64:9e:ce:a2 via eth0
Feb 6 15:51:12 moore dhcpd: DHCPACK on 134.157.47.30 to 00:25:64:9e:ce:a2 via
eth0

Theses machines (Dell optiplex 760) were installed with the same
kickstart file.

Only 7 show this behaviour the other 2 don't.

Note I have not had this problem with 5.2.

Did 5.2 not show the problem on these particular machines, or on other

BIOSes attempting to network boot, and not from the OS at all?

The 5.2 are Optiplex 740, 755 and 960; some have been upgraded

The new ones are 760. We never change the bioses, Ethernet is

I can't vouch for Steve, but in my case, I've never intentionally
turned yum off. All our remaining 4.8 systems started out life as 4.6.
The nightly yum always ran. Then after I upgraded to 4.8, that's when
I started noticing that the systems weren't running the nightly yum.
At the time, I was too busy to worry or care much about it as we started
transitioning to 5.4. But I just had to rebuild a couple of compute
servers that still need to run 4.8, and being too lazy to download
and burn 4.8 discs, I used my old 4.6 discs and then followed the
upgrade HowTo. Paid attention to what happened this time - thus my

   Hi,

I see the same behaviour upgrading from 4.7 to 4.8 a few days ago

   ...

   Jan 23 00:06:43 Erased: yum-conf

so it seems the last preuninstall scriptlet did :

   preuninstall scriptlet (using /bin/sh):
   if [ $1 = 0 ]; then
/sbin/chkconfig --del yum
/sbin/service yum stop /dev/null
   fi

I think the problem probably comes from the order of
   installing yum-conf-4x and yum-conf.

 Q. Is Scientific Linux better for scientific applications?

 A. This linux distribution is called Scientific Linux because it is made

scientific programs. It was named back when it was small, and only the
 scientific labs were using it.

 Hello Al,

I would suggest enabling the dag repos to get some of the applications
 other distros have, including stellarium.

This can be accomplished by editing /etc/yum.repos.d/dag.repo, and changing
 enabled=0
 to
 enabled=1

   Hello,

I'd rather suggest to use :

   yum --enablerepo=dag install stellarium

as long ago I enabled dag.repo and I had a lot of trouble
because yum and yum-conf were updated with dag'ones which are
   completely different than SL ones.

Re: Selinux update problems.

2009-10-19 Thread FRANCHISSEUR Robert
Thank you Alec and Troy,

but on the machines with selinux enforcing I have done :

setsebool -P use_nfs_home_dirs 1

long ago and I have no problem with those machines.

The problem was with machines with selinux *disabled*.

If you want to use a remote NFS server for the home directories on this
machine, you must set the use_nfs_home_dirs boolean:

 setsebool -P use_nfs_home_dirs 1

I have to admit, I'm a bit surprised that it tried to do all those
settings when you do not have selinux disabled.
But after thinking about it, it makes sense. Selinux doesn't know when
you are going to turn it on, so it needs to be ready by having all of
the files with the correct settings. That way when you do turn selinux
on, it doesn't have to go through and change the files then.

   I agree but I can't do 'setsebool -P use_nfs_home_dirs 1' when
   selinux is disabled :

   setsebool -P use_nfs_home_dirs 1

   I got :

   setsebool: SELinux is disabled.

Anyway I only got the messages after the update, and I don't
   see them any longer.

 all firewire related rpms.

Yes because on this old laptop I have only USB 1 and firewire is much
faster to access
   external hard disks.

After many attempts, I just discover it is a bug with yum-2.4.3-10.SL

   yum localinstall
kernel-module-firewire-2.6.9-78.0.17.EL-1286-5.sl4.psi.i686.rpm

   does not work, but :

   yum install

   ===

   is OK.

John (and everyone else), just plug time zone calculator
into the search field of your favorite web search, and you'll
 find tools galore for this.

Just plug in the time Troy gave, along with either CST or
America/Chicago or US Central, or whichever variant your
chosen calculator provides, and there you are.

Surely, if people wish to communicate a time to others across the world,
it's sensible to do so in UTC. I think most people can convert UTC aka
GMT times to their own, and if they can't do that then the probability
of them coping with any other foreign time is pretty low.

The date command is enought :)
If you give any date with any time zone to date you get
   your local time :

   date -d '2008-11-07 09:00 CST'

   Fri Nov 7 16:00:00 CET 2008

the openoffice that is part of the SL4.5 distribution

If it I use it twice, the computer completely locks when starting to
 display the document.
The work around I found was to delete the .openoffice.org2.0 directory
 after every session.

I thought a patch or some fix would be pushed out to fix the problem but
 I'm not sure that
has been the case since I do not have root access of the machine.

Is there a fix or a new version available from the repository?

   Hello,

I do not see this behaviour with the latest version (2.0.4-5.7.0.3.0)
from SL4.5 distrib. May be you could check thoses packages with:

   rpm -V openoffice.org2-base
   rpm -V openoffice.org2-calc
   rpm -V openoffice.org2-core
   rpm -V openoffice.org2-draw
   rpm -V openoffice.org2-impress
   rpm -V openoffice.org2-langpack-fr
   rpm -V openoffice.org2-math
   rpm -V openoffice.org2-writer
   rpm -V openoffice.org-i18n
   rpm -V openoffice.org-libs

   Hello,

I wonder if it is related but under SL4.5 I am still using
the old firefox1.5.0.12-0.3.el4 (july 2007) as I cannot print
   with the more recent releases.

I allready mentionned this problem on november 16 and since that
   time I tried :

   export MOZ_DISABLE_PANGO=1

which resulted in the same garbage on the screen.

I tried the PSI version kindly given by Urs Beyerle
but I have the same problem on my laptop.

I also remove my .mozilla directory.

What I see on the generated postscrip is that the fonts have changed
from Nimbus and Lucida to Helvetica and Times.

   Helvetica
   12: /FontName /Helvetica.Bold.0.0.7fff.0.Set0 def
   16: /FontBBox [0 0 0 0]readonly def
   494: %%BeginResource: font Helvetica.Regular.0.0.7fff.0.Set0
   495: %!PS-AdobeFont-1.0-3.0 Helvetica.Regular.0.0.7fff.0.Set0 1.0
   504: /FontName /Helvetica.Regular.0.0.7fff.0.Set0 def

It seems I am alone with this problem and if someone
as any idea where I could search ...

I also noted that printing the same page several times
   give different generated postscript files.

For example, when printing this URL :

   http://www.sauvonslarecherche.fr/spip.php?page=imprimerid_article=1736

   I got :

ftp://ftp.lmd.jussieu.fr/pub/robert/SL/slr_firefox-1.5.0.12-0.10.el4_1.ps

   printing again:

ftp://ftp.lmd.jussieu.fr/pub/robert/SL/slr_firefox-1.5.0.12-0.10.el4_2.ps

   and again:

ftp://ftp.lmd.jussieu.fr/pub/robert/SL/slr_firefox-1.5.0.12-0.10.el4_3.ps

with firefox1.5.0.12-0.3.el4 (july 2007) the good result is:

   ftp://ftp.lmd.jussieu.fr/pub/robert/SL/slr_firefox-1.5.0.12-0.3.el4_OK.ps

   Thanks for your help.

 Hi,

If you are not afraid of proprietary drivers you can try the NVIDIA
 driver from SL contrib:

 ftp://ftp.scientificlinux.org/linux/scientific/51/i386/contrib/video/

Install nvidia-x11-drv and dkms. dkms (Dynamic Kernel Module Support) will
take care that the nvidia kernel module is rebuilt after a kernel update.

   Hi,

thank you very much, I did that and it works.

Googling around I also discover that I got the pointer
back if I suppress the rhgb option in grub.conf.

Configure the nvidia driver with /usr/bin/nvidia-settings and not with
 system-config-display.

   You mean /usr/bin/nvidia-xconfig I think.

P.S. On that machine (Dell Optiplex 740) I could not run
   your liveCD or liveDVD (4.5 , 5.0 and 5.1)

After creating /dev/entries I got the message:

fatal error occured - Data for LiveCD not found.

Yes they are installed _on your hard drive_ as part of the SL installation,
but they are not installed into the rpm database, so just because they're
there doesn't mean you're using them. The next step is to:

 # rpm --import /etc/pki/rpm-gpg/RPM-GPG-KEY*

and from what is being discussed here, the person above is suggesting that the
installation do the above command to install the keys into the rpm database.

I am not sure I understand what is the result of the rpm --import command
   because if I do a :

   rpm -qi gpg-pubkey

   I get :

On a side note, the key:

2007-08-09 Thread FRANCHISSEUR Robert
- Original message from Luis Torres on 2007-08-09 +0100 at 15:34:46-

 Hi Troy,

Thanks for the hint. It is now working. However it involved a few more
steps, which might be evident for someone more experienced, but here it
is as it might be helpful for someone else:

I had kernel 2.6.18-8.1.3 instaled and the latest is now 2.6.18-8.1.8
 so I did as suggested:
yum install kernel-devel (brought in *-8.1.8)
yum install kernel (installed latest version and I rebooted using it)
yum install kernel-headers (Nvidia complained about missing headers and
 aborted before I did this)

 I used sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-100.14.11-pkg2.run kernel-source-path
 /usr/src/kernels/2.6.18-8.1.8.el5-x86_64

   Hello,

one can also make a nvidia module for an other non running
installed kernel with a command like :

  sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-100.14.11-pkg2.run
--kernel-name='2.6.9-55.0.2.EL-smp-x86_64' -K
  sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-100.14.11-pkg2.run
--kernel-name='2.6.9-55.0.2.EL-x86_64' -K

Problems with util-linux-2.12a-16.EL4.25

2007-05-23 Thread FRANCHISSEUR Robert
Hello,

I have a little more information about the bug with the new
mount command in util-linux-2.12a-16.EL4.25.

the bug is described in :

https://www.scientificlinux.org/bug.feature/bugs/12/pcng_issue_view
https://www.scientificlinux.org/bug.feature/bugs/13/pcng_issue_view

But there is also an other strange problem with NFS mount :

[EMAIL PROTECTED] ~]# mount /distrib_labo
mount: distribhost:/distrib failed, reason given by server: Permission denied

[EMAIL PROTECTED] ~]# host distribhost
distribhost.lmd.jussieu.fr is an alias for moreau.lmd.jussieu.fr.
moreau.lmd.jussieu.fr has address 134.157.47.150

but if I use the real name of this NFS server it works !

[EMAIL PROTECTED] ~]# mount moreau:/distrib /distrib_labo
[EMAIL PROTECTED] ~]#

we have other aliases (CNAME) for this host that works !
for example divhost

[EMAIL PROTECTED] ~]# host divhost
divhost.lmd.jussieu.fr is an alias for moreau.lmd.jussieu.fr.
moreau.lmd.jussieu.fr has address 134.157.47.150

I've been having a little trouble with sound not working on my SL44

experimenting with the 2.6 kernel on a Debian system, and discovered
that the command modprobe pcspkr would activate the system beep.
What I'd like to know is the best way to load this module
 automatically at boot time.
 Thanks for any help,

you just have to install SL_pc_speaker

I have not investigated the reason but I have also noticed the effect.
I use the tpu-edt mappings in emacs. (It meant I had one less thing to
learn when moving from VMS to Linux). I have to issue xmodmap ~/.Xmodmap
by hand every time I log in on SL 4.4 ( i use kde).

   Alex

I think that under KDE you can put a little script in your
   ~/.kde/Autostart folder.

   For example :

   ~/.kde/Autostart/xmodmap.sh

   #! /bin/bash
   if [ -x /usr/X11R6/bin/xmodmap ] ; then
 if [ -f .Xmodmap` ] ; then
xmodmap .Xmodmap

Re: the jed/edt editor and XKeyBoard

2007-03-28 Thread FRANCHISSEUR Robert
- Original message from Ken Teh on Wed Mar 28 20:48:36 2007 -

Many years ago, I put together a configuration which allowed many of my
users to use the Jed editor in EDT emulation mode. The configuration
consisted of a VT100 translation table for the xterm application that
made use the of PC keypad as an almost 1-1 map of the VT100 keypad.
(The PC keypad has a single large + key while the VT100 keypad has 2
 keys at this coordinate).

The trick to this configuration was remapping the NumLock key with
xmodmap. I used xmodmap to translate NumLock to an unused X keycode, in
particular, KP_Equal. The xterm VT100 translation table then mapped
 KP_Equal to the Gold Key.

I'm unable to do this with SL4x. Xmodmap's at X session startup are
ignored. Apparently, one needs to use the newer XKeyboard mechanism to
remap keys. I can remap it interactively after I'm logged in. I took a
stab at understanding XKeyboard, but it is poorly documented, at least,
 from a simple users' perspective.

I am hoping someone on this list has some suggestions. I suggested
folks quit using Jed, but that didn't get me anywhere. ;)

   Hello,

I use IceWM and I can use xmodmap in my ~/.icewm/startup file
