   Hello,

   I have an :
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation NV11 [GeForce2 Go]
(rev b2)

on a 5 years old Dell C810 laptop and SL4.1 does *not* limit up to AGP
2x

(II) NVIDIA(0): Detected AGP rate: 4X

I have to mention I couldn't install 9746 ( the Nvidia installer refuses
I don't
know why), and I installed the previous 9631.

By the way, I have a question about X for changing resolution which is
needed
   when plugin a video projector.

I used to do or but it does
not
seem to work any more. Could it be "eaten" by IceWM ?

No, I have a line saying and that was working before with XFree86 (this

In fact I just discover the xrandr command and I can change the
resolution
again. I got even more than in the Modes line of xconf.org !

It seems those properties are in :
   /usr/lib/firefox-1.5.0.10/greprefs/all.js

   pref("print.postscript.paper_size","letter");

but I haven't try to change it :)

I think that under KDE you can put a little script in your
   ~/.kde/Autostart folder.

   For example :

   ~/.kde/Autostart/xmodmap.sh

   #! /bin/bash
   if [ -x /usr/X11R6/bin/xmodmap ] ; then
 if [ -f .Xmodmap` ] ; then
xmodmap .Xmodmap

   Hi,

I think that if you are using gdm you have to put

   a file called fluxbox in
   /etc/X11/gdm/Session/

   which contains

   #!/bin/sh
   exec /etc/X11/xdm/Xsession fluxbox

   and Xsession will call /usr/share/switchdesk/Xclients.fluxbox

I don't have tested it but I use IceWM and it's the way it works.

If you use kdm, I don't know.

   Hello,

I had a problem once when enabling dag as it updated
yum-conf which is different from SL one and my yum
nightly update was broken. So I recommend to put the
   line :

   exclude=yum*

   in your /etc/yum.repo.d

Under 4.1 the call to ssh-agent was done before in
/etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc-common
which is no longer true in 4.4.

Strange updates

2007-05-15 Thread FRANCHISSEUR Robert
Hello,

Is there a way to know from which repo a package come ?

I ask because I had sl-contrib enabled from the begining
without any problem. But today afer the last yum update
ssh was not working with messages like:

buffer_append_space: len 5 not supported
rsync: connection unexpectedly closed (0 bytes received so far) [receiver]
rsync error: error in rsync protocol data stream (code 12) at io.c(359)

 rabeson:{root}:/var/log > service sshd restart
Stopping sshd: [FAILED]
Starting sshd:buffer_append_space: len 1 not supported

I spent a little time to understand this openssh.i386 3.9p1-8.SL.4.21
came from sl-contrib and not sl-errata

Strange enough is that I had this problem only on my laptop
(i386 SL4.1) and not on my home PC (x86_64 SL4.4) which still has :
openssh-3.9p1-8.SL.4.20

On may 10 I also have a "strange" update which "installed"
ati-fglrx.i686 8.18.6.1-0.SL.1 (I have a nvidia card !)

Problems with util-linux-2.12a-16.EL4.25

2007-05-23 Thread FRANCHISSEUR Robert
Hello,

I have a little more information about the bug with the new
mount command in util-linux-2.12a-16.EL4.25.

the bug is described in :

https://www.scientificlinux.org/bug.feature/bugs/12/pcng_issue_view
https://www.scientificlinux.org/bug.feature/bugs/13/pcng_issue_view

But there is also an other strange problem with NFS mount :

[EMAIL PROTECTED] ~]# mount /distrib_labo
mount: distribhost:/distrib failed, reason given by server: Permission denied

[EMAIL PROTECTED] ~]# host distribhost
distribhost.lmd.jussieu.fr is an alias for moreau.lmd.jussieu.fr.
moreau.lmd.jussieu.fr has address 134.157.47.150

but if I use the real name of this NFS server it works !

[EMAIL PROTECTED] ~]# mount moreau:/distrib /distrib_labo
[EMAIL PROTECTED] ~]#

we have other aliases (CNAME) for this host that works !
for example divhost

[EMAIL PROTECTED] ~]# host divhost
divhost.lmd.jussieu.fr is an alias for moreau.lmd.jussieu.fr.
moreau.lmd.jussieu.fr has address 134.157.47.150

   Hello,

   unfortunately I don't have any real REHL4.

   Hello,

one can also make a nvidia module for an other non running
installed kernel with a command like :

  sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-100.14.11-pkg2.run
--kernel-name='2.6.9-55.0.2.EL-smp-x86_64' -K
  sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-100.14.11-pkg2.run

   Hello,
we never had this problem, but in the file :

/usr/share/switchdesk/Xclients.icewm

   we have to replace :

   WM="icewm"

   by :

   WM="icewm-session"

   for ~/.icewm/startup works.

   Hi,

I only use xpdf, so I don't have this problem but I just
noticed that I can't print any longer with this release of
firefox, the generated postscript beeing very strange. I first
thought that was an UTF8 problem, but I got the same behavior
   with iso-8859-1 encoding.

   So I re-install the previous release (1.5.0.12-0.3.el4) and I
   can print afresh.

Does anybody see the same problem ?

   Hi,

no, same problem. For example with the URL:

   http://tmp.sauvonslarecherche.fr/spip.php?article1736

the print preview is OK but if you print it (or "print to file")
you only got the first column of the main text.

Well, I was talking on the install on my home desktop Dell
Precison 390 but I just install the same version on my laptop
Dell C810 and it does not work as expected :((

I don't understand because they both are SL4.5.

You can see the generated postscript files here :

   ftp://ftp.lmd.jussieu.fr/pub/robert/SL/slr_desktop.ps good
   ftp://ftp.lmd.jussieu.fr/pub/robert/SL/slr_laptop.ps bad

Oups, I don't have j2sdk any longer. I think I mixed up between

SL5.1 xorg problem.

2008-02-05 Thread FRANCHISSEUR Robert
Hello,

after a fresh SL5.1 install on a Dell Optiplex 740
I have no mouse pointer which is very annoying :)

It was there during the install and during the boot process.

Also, I was not able to get a better resolution than 800x600
on a 1600x1200 flat panel screen with the "nv" driver
00:05.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation C51 [GeForce 6150 LE]
(rev a2)

The sound is working
00:10.1 Audio device: nVidia Corporation MCP51 High Definition Audio (rev a2)

rpm -Va seems to give a lot of files with at least a bad Time

AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core

Thanks for your help.

   Hi,

thank you very much, I did that and it works.

Googling around I also discover that I got the pointer
back if I suppress the "rhgb" option in grub.conf.

   You mean /usr/bin/nvidia-xconfig I think.

P.S. On that machine (Dell Optiplex 740) I could not run
   your liveCD or liveDVD (4.5 , 5.0 and 5.1)

After "creating /dev/entries" I got the message:

fatal error occured - Data for LiveCD not found.
   Are you using SCSI ?

   Hello,

I do not see this behaviour with the latest version (2.0.4-5.7.0.3.0)
from SL4.5 distrib. May be you could check thoses packages with:

   rpm -V openoffice.org2-base
   rpm -V openoffice.org2-calc
   rpm -V openoffice.org2-core
   rpm -V openoffice.org2-draw
   rpm -V openoffice.org2-impress
   rpm -V openoffice.org2-langpack-fr
   rpm -V openoffice.org2-math
   rpm -V openoffice.org2-writer
   rpm -V openoffice.org-i18n
   rpm -V openoffice.org-libs

   Hello,

I wonder if it is related but under SL4.5 I am still using
the old firefox1.5.0.12-0.3.el4 (july 2007) as I cannot print
   with the more recent releases.

I allready mentionned this problem on november 16 and since that
   time I tried :

   export MOZ_DISABLE_PANGO=1

which resulted in the same garbage on the screen.

I tried the PSI version kindly given by Urs Beyerle
but I have the same problem on my laptop.

I also remove my .mozilla directory.

What I see on the generated postscrip is that the fonts have changed
from Nimbus and Lucida to Helvetica and Times.

   Helvetica
   12:< /FontName /Helvetica.Bold.0.0.7fff.0.Set0 def
   16:< /FontBBox [0 0 0 0]readonly def
   494:< %%BeginResource: font Helvetica.Regular.0.0.7fff.0.Set0
   495:< %!PS-AdobeFont-1.0-3.0 Helvetica.Regular.0.0.7fff.0.Set0 1.0
   504:< /FontName /Helvetica.Regular.0.0.7fff.0.Set0 def

It seems I am alone with this problem and if someone
as any idea where I could search ...

I also noted that printing the same page several times
   give different generated postscript files.

For example, when printing this URL :

   http://www.sauvonslarecherche.fr/spip.php?page=imprimer&id_article=1736

   I got :

ftp://ftp.lmd.jussieu.fr/pub/robert/SL/slr_firefox-1.5.0.12-0.10.el4_1.ps

   printing again:

ftp://ftp.lmd.jussieu.fr/pub/robert/SL/slr_firefox-1.5.0.12-0.10.el4_2.ps

   and again:

ftp://ftp.lmd.jussieu.fr/pub/robert/SL/slr_firefox-1.5.0.12-0.10.el4_3.ps

with firefox1.5.0.12-0.3.el4 (july 2007) the good result is:

   ftp://ftp.lmd.jussieu.fr/pub/robert/SL/slr_firefox-1.5.0.12-0.3.el4_OK.ps

   Thanks for your help.

After 'yum remove yum-conf' you cannot use yum again so you have
   to do an :

rpm -Uvh

   Hello,

for SL4 you need to install all the packages to get the 2.0.4 version

yum install openoffice.org2-writer openoffice.org2-calc \
openoffice.org2-math openoffice.org2-draw \
openoffice.org2-impress openoffice.org2-base

and your langpack

yum install openoffice.org2-langpack-fr

in my case.

I am sure sl-contrib is not enabled ( I check many times)

I just succeded to make it work on a Dell D830 laptop with this card
under SL5.1 :)

   the problem was that :

Aug 20 17:16:14 catlett firmware_helper[7658]: Loading of
/lib/firmware/iwlwifi-4965-1.ucode for iwl4965
driver failed: No such file or directory
==

   and indeed iwlwifi-4965-ucode-4.44.17-5.sl5.noarch contains

   /lib/firmware/iwlwifi-4965.ucode

   and *NOT*

   /lib/firmware/iwlwifi-4965-1.ucode

   A yum --enablerepo=* provides iwlwifi-4965-1.ucode

   gave me iwlwifi-4965-ucode.noarch4.44.1.20-7.0.1
atrpms

   So I did :

   yum remove iwlwifi-4965-ucode
   yum --disablerepo=* --enablerepo=atrpms install
iwlwifi-4965-ucode-4.44.1.20-7.0.1.noarch

   and it works.

P.S. The fact that it is blaklisted does not hurt.

Re: Please use mirrors if possible

Hi Troy,

is there a way to log which mirror we use when yum update ?

I have a mirror 2 floors upstair which comme first in my repos :

baseurl=ftp://distrib-coffee.ipsl.jussieu.fr/pub/linux/scientific-linux/45/$basearch/errata/SL/RPMS/

http://distrib-coffee.ipsl.jussieu.fr/pub/linux/scientific-linux/45/$basearch/errata/SL/RPMS/

ftp://ftp.scientificlinux.org/linux/scientific/45/$basearch/errata/SL/RPMS/
ftp://linuxsoft.cern.ch/scientific/45/$basearch/errata/SL/RPMS/

but I often notice, just doing a 'netstat', that I am using your server rather
than ours and I'd like to investigate this furter on a longer period

Thanks for your help.

The only way I find to permanently change options about paper
format margin and so on was to do that in "about:config" URL
as those variables changed from the menus (print, page setup)
   vanished.

No problem with A4 paper format till now.

If you give any date with any time zone to "date" you get
   your local time :

   Hello,

I think you should not let enable=1 in the dag repo but use
   rather:
   yum --enablerepo=dag install vlc

Otherwise you may have conflicts between SL and Dag repository
after a nightly yum update as I had a few years ago.

I remember CERN have a yum protectbase plugin but I never try
   it.

Yes because on this old laptop I have only USB 1 and firewire is much

Re: Selinux update problems.

2009-10-19 Thread FRANCHISSEUR Robert
Thank you Alec and Troy,

but on the machines with selinux enforcing I have done :

setsebool -P use_nfs_home_dirs 1

long ago and I have no problem with those machines.

The problem was with machines with selinux *disabled*.

   I agree but I can't do 'setsebool -P use_nfs_home_dirs 1' when
   selinux is disabled :

   setsebool -P use_nfs_home_dirs 1

   I got :

   setsebool: SELinux is disabled.

Anyway I only got the messages after the update, and I don't
   see them any longer.

   Hello,

I'd rather suggest to use :

   yum --enablerepo=dag install stellarium

as long ago I enabled dag.repo and I had a lot of trouble
because yum and yum-conf were updated with dag'ones which are
   completely different than SL ones.

   Hi,

I see the same behaviour upgrading from 4.7 to 4.8 a few days ago
and looking at yum.log I see at the end of the upgrade :

   ...
   Jan 23 00:06:35 Installed: yum-conf-4x.noarch 4:1-8.SL
   Jan 23 00:06:36 Updated: iptables.i386 1.2.11-3.2.RHEL4
   ...
   Jan 23 00:06:40 Updated: vixie-cron.i386 4:4.1-57.el4
   Jan 23 00:06:43 Erased: yum-conf

so it seems the last preuninstall scriptlet did :

   preuninstall scriptlet (using /bin/sh):
   if [ $1 = 0 ]; then
/sbin/chkconfig --del yum
/sbin/service yum stop >> /dev/null
   fi

I think the problem probably comes from the order of
   installing yum-conf-4x and yum-conf.

Very stange DHCP problem with SL5.4

2010-02-10 Thread FRANCHISSEUR Robert
Hello,

After installing 9 new desktops with DHCP I changed the network
config to static IP and restart the network. But they are still
requesting DHCP adresse. The dhcp server gives them a dynamic IP and
then there are no free lease (we have only 5 for guests).

It is the first time I see that and I really dont understand what
happened.

There is no NetworkManager no avahi-daemon no nscd and no clone
interface.

So I have one static IP and one dhcp IP on eth0 I can ping:

seraphine.lmd.jussieu.fr (134.157.47.113) at 00:25:64:9E:CE:A2 [ether] on eth0
shaughnessy.lmd.jussieu.fr (134.157.47.30) at 00:25:64:9E:CE:A2 [ether] on eth0

I removed dhclient but I still see the request on the logs of the
dhcpd server.

Feb 6 15:51:12 moore dhcpd: DHCPREQUEST for 134.157.47.30 from
00:25:64:9e:ce:a2 via eth0
Feb 6 15:51:12 moore dhcpd: DHCPACK on 134.157.47.30 to 00:25:64:9e:ce:a2 via
eth0

Theses machines (Dell optiplex 760) were installed with the same
kickstart file.

Only 7 show this behaviour the other 2 don't.

Note I have not had this problem with 5.2.

The 5.2 are Optiplex 740, 755 and 960; some have been upgraded
   to 5.4.

The new ones are 760. We never change the bioses, Ethernet is
enabled but there is no PXE nor ImageServer.

I also try to install a dhcp server on an other machine, clean
the leases etc. I could add their static IP on the dhcpd.conf
but I'd just like to understand.

What is strange for me is that 2 machines among 9 do not show
   this behavior.

As suggested by Ewan Mac Mahon, I will triple check all the
   bioses config tomorow.

In fact it was in the 760s as in the boot menu there is a new
   option :

Intel® Management Engine BIOS Extension (MEBx)

which allow to configure AMT (I knew nothing about that)

So I disabled the "ME state control" and those machines
stopped to ask our dhcpd server for a dynamic IP.

   Thanks for your help.

   Hi,

and to know on which (disk, partition) it is, I first do:

   grub> find /grub/stage1

it should answer (hd0,3) in your case (/dev/hda4) as grub start
   to number from 0.

   Hello,

we also have ACPI related problems on our Dell laptops
   Latitude E6400 and 6500.

They stop fuctionning without notice and sometime with kernel
panic. It seems related to ACPI as the logs show plenty of
   messages :

   Mar 14 19:16:45 laboriel kernel: ACPI Error (psargs-0355): [BST0]
Namespace lookup failure, AE_NOT_FOUND
Mar 14 19:16:45 laboriel kernel: ACPI Error (psparse-0537): Method

Mar 14 19:16:45 laboriel kernel: ACPI Exception (acpi_battery-0206):
AE_NOT_FOUND, Evaluating _BST [20060707]

   occuring around every minute.

what we have done is to suppress the battery monitoring, for
   example using icewm :

   # Show APM status on task bar
TaskBarShowAPMStatus=0 # 0/1

   # Show APM status on task bar in time-format
   # TaskBarShowAPMTime=0 # 0/1

problem with kernel 2.6.18-194.3.1.el5

2010-05-26 Thread Franchisseur Robert
Hello,

I have troubles after upgrading to kernel 2.6.18-194.3.1.el5 on all
our Dell Optiplex 740 with Nvidia graphic card.

The system is very slow, mouse is hard to move and there is the ata/1
process which takes around 10% of the CPU.

PID USER PR NI VIRT RES SHR S %CPU %MEMTIME+ COMMAND
  459 root 10 -5 000 S 12 0.0 62:32.53 ata/1

They have nvidia-x11-drv - 180.22-1.0.x86_64

I tried to upgrade to nvidia-x11-drv - 195.36.24-1.0
but the server Xorg.0.log says :

(EE) May 26 17:48:01 NVIDIA(0): Failed to initialize the NVIDIA kernel module.
Please see the
(EE) May 26 17:48:01 NVIDIA(0): system's kernel log for additional error
messages and
(EE) May 26 17:48:01 NVIDIA(0): consult the NVIDIA README for details.

So I have to get back to Kernel 2.6.18-164.15.1.el5

No problem so far on Optiplex 960 with the same Nvidia cards.

Thanks for your help.

I get back as in fact it works for 4 among our 5 Optiplex 740.

The one on which 'enable_msi=0' does nothing is older
   05/12/2007 (versus 08/07/2009), has a BIOS Version:1.2.2
Release Date: 10/11/2007 (versus Version: 2.2.2 Release Date:
04/01/2009) and the only difference in lspi is the graphic
   card :

00:05.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation C51 [GeForce 6150
LE] (rev a2)
   versus
03:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation G98 [GeForce 9300

I tried but there is only a windows version of the bios which
does not fit on a floppy (1.8Mb)

   ls -lh O740-224.EXE
   -rw-r--r-- 1 bob bob 1.8M Mon May 31 21:38:45 2010 O740-224.EXE

I then tried to use biosdisk-0.75-2.noarch.rpm (found on
linux.dell.com/biosdisk/) but I got the same problem as it
   uses a dosdisk.img too small too (1.4M).

So as soon as I have a little time I am going to read a few
documentation to find how to make a dos image bigger.

problem with acroread SLC on SL4.8

2010-07-27 Thread Franchisseur Robert
Hello,

we have recently noticed that acroread-9.3.3-1.slc4 from the
repo http://linuxsoft.cern.ch/cern/slc4X/$basearch/yum/updates/

takes almost 100% of the CPU.

Scientific Linux SL release 4.8 (Beryllium)
Linux reynolds.lmd.jussieu.fr 2.6.9-89.0.26.EL #1 Wed Jun 16 04:44:53 CDT 2010
i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux

Does anybody see the same behavior ?

Slow boot with Kernel 2.6.18-194.x.y on SL5.4

2010-07-27 Thread Franchisseur Robert
Hello,

On our Dell laptops E6400 or E6500 the boot process is very long. It
takes ~ 40 seconds between:

Redhat NASH
and
INIT:

if we suppress 'quiet' we see that the problem is
after the line :

device-mapper : dm-raid45 : initialized V0.25941
Waiting for driver initialization

and it seems the system is waiting some timeout.

Does anyone know if there is a Bios or kernel parameter to change to
have a faster boot ?

Thanks for your help.

We do not see this problem with SL5 :)

It is in SL4.8 and not only within firefox but standalone also.

   I removed nppdf.so without success.

   I completely agree,

The last one for me :

   Ican not 'convert file.jpg file.pdf'with
ImageMagick-6.2.8.0-4.el5_1.1 on SL5 (it writes the prologue

   Hello,

   what says lspci ?

I had the same problem with several dell optiplex 740 ( see
the thread "problem with kernel 2.6.18-194.3.1.el5" on
20100527) with 'nvidia chipset and nvidia graphic' and 'nvidia
   chipset and ati graphic'.

To solve that I have to :

   1) flash the bios

   2) put 'options snd-hda-intel index=0 enable_msi=0' in
/etc/modprobe.conf ( thanks to Akemi Yagi)

   3) 'yum --enablerepo=sl-contrib install nvidia-x11-drv' for
those with nvidia graphic but do nothing for those with ATI
graphics. I tried to install ati-x11-drv from the sl-contrib
repo but that resulted with two X server running, one of them
   eating 100% cpu.

I don't understand why it is looking for 2.5-42 as there is 2.5-49 in the repo.

Well, I have to apologize as I just find that this particular

firstboot problem on laptop Dell E6510

2010-12-02 Thread FRANCHISSEUR Robert
Hello,

is there a way to bypass the probing of the video card during install ?

There is an nvidia card probed on new Dell E6510 laptop which does
not work with the nv driver . I tried vga=nnn that first work but
anaconda then find the nvidia and X failed.

If not, my second question is: after installing nvidia-x11-drv, is
there a way to have firstboot running on the next reboot (I removed
/etc/sysconfig/firstbootand /var/lock/subsys/firstboot without
success)

Thanks for your help.

Thanks for your answer, but I tried this option and also
'skipddc' but it seems anaconda still try to load the NV
   driver.

I noticed that even after I installed nvidia-x11-drv, rhgb
does not work either at boot.

So I 'yum update kernel', reboot (rhgb worked) and I ran
   firstboot by hand.

Hello and happy new year to everybody.

Are you sure there is not a second audio device ?

On new Dell Latitude E6510 there are 2 audio devices :

00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 5 Series/3400 Series Chipset
High Definition Audio (rev 05)
01:00.1 Audio device: nVidia Corporation High Definition Audio
Controller (rev a1)

and the nvidia come first by default but it did not work.

With system-config-soundcard I could tell it to take Intel
first and now it works like a charm.

I only do that on SL5.5 as I have not installed any SL6 yet.

   Hope this help.

   Hello,

   bind comes with bind-chroot-9.3.6-4.P1.el5_5.3

so /etc/named.conf is found in /var/named/chroot/etc/named.conf
and your zone and rev config files go to /var/named/chroot/var/named/

Till today I din'nt noticed that on laptops Dell E6500 we have
the following warning with the new :

   kernel-2.6.18-238.1.1.el5.x86_64

Warning: pci_mmcfg_init marking 256MB space uncacheable.

The solution is to add the folowing arg in the kernel call in
   grub.conf :

   acpi_mcfg_max_pci_bus_num=on

   Hello,

what I do which work for me is :

   yum clean all
   yum -y update
   yum -y shell ~/yum-5x
   yum -y update yum
   yum clean all
   yum -y upgrade

   ~/yum-5x contains :

   erase yum-conf
   install yum-conf-5x
   run
   exit

   Hope this help.

SL5 Live System on USB flash drive problem

2011-04-20 Thread FRANCHISSEUR Robert
Hello,

I made a 'livedvd64_SL55_2010-06-17' on an USB flash drive as explained
in http://www.livecd.ethz.ch/usbdisk_sl4_sl5.html
but when I boot the USB I got a kernel panic :

Failled to execute linuxrc. Attempting defaults...
Kernel panic-not syncing: No init found. Try passing init= option to kernel

What did I miss ?

Thanks for your help.

   Hello again,

Trying once more I just notice that before the kernel panic message I have
an other error :

Ramdisk : compress image found at block 0
crc error
input : PS/2 Generic mouse ...
...
Freeing unused kernel memory
Write protecting the kernel read-only data : 504 k
Failled to execute linuxrc. Attempting defaults...
Kernel panic-not syncing: No init found. Try passing init= option to kernel

So I did a diff between initrd.gz on the iso file and the onr on the USB key
and they differ !

I copy again initrd.gz and the boot sequence went further but after
"creating /etc/fstab" I had an othe Kernel panic.

So I think the problem is with the USB key (brand new (: and I will
try an other one.

Thanks again for your help.

   Hello,

and thank you for this trick. I tried but there is no way to
format in FAT16 (there is only FAT32) so I does'nt work.
