But, I have been using Fedora for a long time and forgot the obvious due to systemd on recent versions where it was easier just to use the graphic start screen. The solution is simply to set /etc/inittab to level 3 and after rebooting I can now log-in and enter startxfce4 and I am back in familiar territory with a desktop I know how to deal with. Go get the epel-release package from here: http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/EPEL (get the right one for your arch, links midway down the page), then yum --enablerepo=epel search xfce to see what's available. Bob I switch some time ago it was a pain to go about all the configuration scripts but it can be done unfortunately I did not keep notes just be patient and good luck.
