[scifinoir2] Rihanna added to cast of “The Last Dragon”

2010-02-20 Thread Kelwyn
http://blackgeekdom.com/blog/2010/02/16/rihanna-added-to-cast-of-the-last-dragon-remake/

Rihanna is set to play a dominatrix alongside Samuel L Jackson.

The singer has long spoken of her desire to branch out into film, and has even
taken acting lessons to help her hone her skill. She has now won a part on new
movie The Last Dragon, a remake of the 1985 film about a boy on a quest to
become one of the best martial artists in the world.

"She has landed an incredibly challenging role alongside Samuel L Jackson. But
it's not a part for the faint-hearted," a source told British newspaper The
Daily Mirror. "She will play a super sexy, super kinky dominatrix in the
martial arts flick."

The 21-year-old has apparently been asked to fully research her role before
shooting begins, and is contemplating spending time at a fetish club for
inspiration. "She has been told to look into the role – and this could well
include a trip to an S&M dungeon."

Vulture has learned that Warner Bros. is negotiating to reteam with The Book of
Eli's Hughes brothers to have them direct a live-action remake of the cult
favorite Akira, from a script by Iron Man scribes Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby.
(Akira is being produced by Leonardo DiCaprio's company, Appian Way, along with
Andrew Lazar, who's also currently producing an adaptation of DC Comics' Jonah

A primer is a strand of nucleic acid that serves as a starting point for
DNA replication. They are required because the enzymes that catalyze
replication, DNA polymerases, can only add new nucleotides to an existing
strand of DNA. The polymerase starts replication at the 3'-end of the primer,
and copies the opposite strand.

In most cases of natural DNA replication, the primer for DNA synthesis and
replication is a short strand of RNA (which can be made de novo). This RNA is
produced by primase, and is later removed and replaced with DNA by a repair
polymerase.

Fast forward through the episodes. Many of them are useless and move the plot
only incrementally. The Sylar/Peter thing bugs me although it was interesting.

The Claire outing herself thing is the last couple of minutes of the last
episode of the season.

My question is what is the use of having people with superpowers and no one
uses them? Everyone wants to "fit in." Peter could have quite literally made
himself into Superman but they backed away from it.

When the series started I thought that it was going to take the direction of
being sort of a live action superhero universe where costume heroes come alive.
Or at least show the beginnings of a world like that.

Af the risk of arrogance (and if I could stay glued to it long enough), I
daresay I could make sense of it. I used to be in a Yahu group of physicists,
and we created and played around with a temporal paradox (the basic "someone
kills your grandfathers in front of you, you have a time machine and ten
'moves' to make" for two months. (As you go, you "get moves back" as each
paradox hits.)

Re: [scifinoir2] Re: 'Heroes' Never Recovered From Its First Break

2010-02-20 Thread Mr. Worf
That brings up a couple of things that they skipped. The multiple time lines
were totally forgotten about. It would have been interesting to see what
would have happened if Sylar became president or NYC blew up. Or the
original heroes first and second generations.

[scifinoir2] movie: Bobby loves mangoes

2010-02-20 Thread Mr. Worf
I found a link on Youtube that interviews the director of the movie. You
will love this little film on time travel. Its 15 minutes. Here it is:

[scifinoir2] Re: Movie: Primer

2010-02-20 Thread Kelwyn
The Box in Primer is just a big DVR. You turn it on and it records time, in
real time, but you can only go back to a time that was "recorded" while the box
was on. If you turn on the Box at noon and come back at 6 pm, you can get into
the box and go back in time to noon but it will take you 6 hours (midnight) to
get there (noon).

Reminds me of an old Saturday Night Live skit about time travel. This guy
invents a time machine that only takes you forward in time. You get in it and
you wake up eight hours in the future.

It is called a bed.

[scifinoir2] Re: Movie: Primer

2010-02-20 Thread Kelwyn
A primer is a strand of nucleic acid that serves as a starting point for DNA
replication. They are required because the enzymes that catalyze replication,
DNA polymerases, can only add new nucleotides to an existing strand of DNA. The
polymerase starts replication at the 3'-end of the primer, and copies the
opposite strand.
In most cases of natural DNA replication, the primer for DNA synthesis and
replication is a short strand of RNA (which can be made de novo). This RNA is
produced by primase, and is later removed and replaced with DNA by a repair
polymerase.

Did you know that? I didn't.

Fast forward through the episodes. Many of them are useless and move the
plot only incrementally. The Sylar/Peter thing bugs me although it was
interesting.

The Claire outing herself thing is the last couple of minutes of the last
episode of the season.

My question is what is the use of having people with superpowers and no
one uses them? Everyone wants to "fit in." Peter could have quite
literally made himself into Superman but they backed away from it.

When the series started I thought that it was going to take the direction of
being sort of a live action superhero universe where costume heroes come alive.
Or at least show the beginnings of a world like that.

Why
English Teachers Die Young

Every year, English
teachers from across the country can submit their
collections
of actual analogies and metaphors found in high school
essays.

These excerpts are published each year to the amusement
of teachers.

Here are last year's winners.

1. Her face
was a perfect oval, like a circle that had its two sides
gently
compressed by a Thigh Master.

2. His thoughts tumbled in his
head, making and breaking alliances
like
underpants in a dryer without Cling Free.

3. He spoke with the
wisdom that can only come from experience, like a
guy
who went blind because he looked at a solar eclipse without one
of
those
boxes with a pinhole in it and now goes around the country
speaking
at high schools about the dangers of looking at a solar
eclipse
without one of those boxes with a pinhole in it.

4. She grew on
him like she was a colony of E. Coli, and he was
room-temperature
Canadian beef.

5. She had a deep, throaty, genuine laugh, like
that sound a dog makes
just
before it throws up.

6. Her vocabulary was as bad as, like,
whatever.

7. He was as tall as a six-foot, three-inch
tree.

8. The revelation that his marriage of 30 years had
disintegrated
because
of his wife's infidelity came as a rude shock, like a
surcharge
at a formerly surcharge-free ATM machine.

9. The little boat
gently drifted across the pond exactly the way a
bowling
ball wouldn't.

10. McBride fell 12 stories, hitting the pavement
like a Hefty bag
filled
with vegetable soup.

11. From the attic came an unearthly howl.
The whole scene had an
eerie,
surreal quality, like when you're on vacation in another
city
and
Jeopardy comes on at 7:00 p.m. instead of 7:30.

12. Her hair
glistened in the rain like a nose hair after a sneeze.

13. The
hailstones leaped from the pavement, just like maggots when
you
fry
them in hot grease.

14. Long separated by cruel fate, the
star-crossed lovers raced across
the
grassy field toward each other like two freight trains, one
having
left
Cleveland at 6:36 p.m. traveling at 55 mph, the other from
Topeka
at
4:19 p.m. at a speed of 35 mph.

15. They lived in a typical
suburban neighborhood with picket fences
that
resembled Nancy Kerrigan's teeth.

16. John and Mary had never
met. They were like two hummingbirds who
had
also never met.

17. He fell for her like his heart was a mob
informant and she was
the
East River.

18. Even in his last years, Granddad had a mind like
a steel trap,
only
one that had been left out so long it had rusted
shut.
19.
Shots rang out, as shots are wont to do.

20. The plan was simple,
like my brother-in-law Phil. But unlike Phil,
this
plan just might work.

21. The young fighter had a hungry look,
the kind you get from not
eating
for a while.

22. He was as lame as a duck. Not the metaphorical
lame duck, either,
but
a real duck that was actually lame, maybe from stepping on a
land
mine
or something.

23. The ballerina rose gracefully en Pointe and
extended one slender
leg
behind her, like a dog at a fire hydrant.

24. It was an American
tradition, like fathers chasing kids around
with
power tools.

25. He was deeply in love. When she spoke, he
thought he heard bells,
as
if she were a garbage truck backing
up.

Re: [scifinoir2] Re: Movie: Primer

2010-02-20 Thread Mr. Worf
The style is a little heavy on the cerebral vs visual. I found it
interesting because of the camera style (a reality style) and the directors
ability to tell a story without a big budget.

Has anyone seen the film Bobby loves Mangoes?

Primer is a low budget indie film about two engineers that create a time
travel device in their garage. Everything is great until they discover
something wrong that happens in their future not of their own doing.

This award winning film takes a methodical approach to time travel and how it
could possibly work from an engineer's point of view.

Re: [scifinoir2] topic: Rewrites

2010-02-20 Thread Keith Johnson
what do you mean by "rewrite"? Do you mean revisit a series and update it in
some ways, maybe telling side stories that were never explored, or updating
some outdated cultural representations? Or do you mean completing redoing the
series?

I don't think any of the series needs a full rewrite, just updating. I'd only
touch the OS, and even then I'd leave all the characters and main missions
shown in the OS alone. What I'd do is explore the world more fully with new
missions, the way TNG and yes, "Enterprise" did. I'd spend more time with eps
dealing with the Romulans and Klingons outside of just battles, fleshing out
relationships with them. I'd pull in more races like the Tholians, the
Andorians, and see more about how the Federation works. This was one of the
good things "Enterprise" did: it told a good story of how we started forming
relationships with other races.

The main update I'd do to the OS lies along racial and gender lines. It was a
product of its time in that women were given secondary roles. Number One from
the original pilot was a bridge officer. By the time the series was aired,
she'd been rewritten as McCoy's assistant Nurse Chapel. No women are bridge
officers or starship commanders. The best women are shown as is as lawyers and
psychiatrists. The series ender "Turnabout Intruder" is based around a jealous
former lover of Kirk's who literally steals his body so she can command a
starship--something the show makes clear is beyond women. Kirk even says "Her
life could have been as full as any woman's. If only..." The only exception was
the Romulan Sub-Commander in "The Enterprise Incident", and even she was
portrayed as a woman easily manipulated by Spock's two-finger mack attack!

So I'd simply update it to show women as Starfleet officers and in high ranking
jobs on Earth and in the Federation. I'd do the same for Blacks and other
people of color. At least blacks had Uhura, though she was a glorified
secretary. They did at least acknowledge that black men were high ranking, as
the guy who presided over Kirk's court-martial was black, a Commodore, and a
former starship captain. There were black men shown as crewmen, and of course,
Doctor Daystorm, the super genius inventor of Duotronics and the M5. But still,
I'd show more blacks and people of color in more roles.

Other than that i don't believe the series need rewrites. Just a few tweaks
here and there. and to beat that dead horse, all this can be done *without*
shifting stuff to an alternate universe, the way that crappy movie did... :(

If you had the power to rewrite any of the Star trek series what would you do?

I would change the ending to DS9. Leave ST:THG alone (ending that is). Continue
2 explore the mirror universe and the continuation of the founding of the
Federation in Enterprise. And not even do that piece of crap Voyager.

Um.I dont know what movie your talking about...but the "something wrong"

[scifinoir2] Movie: Primer

2010-02-20 Thread Mr. Worf
Primer is a low budget indie film about two engineers that create a time
travel device in their garage. Everything is great until they discover
something wrong that happens in their future not of their own doing.

This award winning film takes a methodical approach to time travel and how
it could possibly work from an engineer's point of view.

Has anyone seen this little film?
