I believe that they could make even more money if they beefed up their
rental library and offered opening day renting from home. (at a premium)

Did you see the post that I did about the prison restaurant and the ninja
one? The ninja restaurant has a large blow up ninja scaling down the wall
outside, and when you walk in, a waterfall parts as if it is a secret
entrance.

The prison restaurant chains everyone together then they lock you in your
cell and chain you to the table.

[scifinoir2] Countries with the Most Millionaires

2010-06-21 Thread Mr. Worf
Countries with the Most Millionaires
by Venessa Wong
Sunday, June 20, 2010provided by[image:
BusinessWeek]

As the financial markets rebounded in 2009 and developing markets continued
to grow, lost wealth around the world returned. Despite the volatile global
economy, many households gained or regained millionaire status last year,
according to a new report by the Boston Consulting Group. The study finds
global wealth increased 11.5 percent in 2009, to $111.5 trillion, just short
of 2007 levels. When measuring assets under management -- cash deposits,
money market funds, listed securities, and onshore and offshore assets, but
not wealth attributed to investors' own businesses, residences, or luxury
goods -- the U.S. continued to lead with more than 4.7 million "millionaire
households," followed by Japan and China.
*More from BusinessWeek.com :*

• Countries with the Most Millionaires 2010

• Most Expensive Homes in America's Biggest Cities

• Most Expensive Summer Homes 2010

Singapore, a country with a population of about 5.1 million, had the
greatest concentration of millionaire households: 11.4 percent of the
country's total. Wealth may have returned to precrisis levels last year, but
confidence has not yet. BCG expects global wealth to grow an average 6
percent annually through 2014, led by robust economies in the Asia-Pacific,
but Peter Damisch, a BCG partner and a co-author of the report, says people
are still hesitant about investing. Many moved assets from private banks to
state-guaranteed retail banks and are still waiting for either new
opportunities or new confidence to reinvest, says Damisch.

*Share of country's wealth held by millionaire households:* 56 percent**

Even though the U.S. real estate market remained weak, the stock market
rebound helped boost the number of millionaire households 15.1 percent in
2009. The U.S. had the most millionaires by far, leading second-in-line
Japan by 3,485,000 households.

Millionaires represented a fraction of the U.S. population last year but
held 56 percent of its wealth, according to Boston Consulting Group.

* Source on all slides: Population Reference Bureau
** Source on all slides: Boston Consulting Group. The year on year change in
number of millionaire households was calculated using a constant exchange
rate; BCG used yearend 2009 exchange rates to calculate the number of
millionaire households in both 2008 and 2009.

*2. Japan*

*Population:* 127.6 million

*2009 number of millionaire households:* 1,230,000
*Percentage increase:* 5.9 percent YOY
*Share of country's wealth held by millionaire households:* 21 percent

The number of millionaire households in Japan grew by a 5.9 percent in 2009.
Although No. 3 on the list China tightened the gap with a 30.7 percent
increase, Japan still outpaced its developing neighbor by 560,000
households.

While developed countries struggled through the recession, China's economy
continued to boom, with gross domestic product growing 8.7 percent last
year. The surge of commercial activity has created a growing nouveau riche
population in China that includes entrepreneurs and investors, although they
still represent a tiny fraction of the total population.

Seeing opportunities in the growing wealthy demographic, luxury retailers
have set up operations in major cities, and high-end real estate is drawing
interest -- for example, a $30 million house reportedly sold in Shanghai.

As the financial markets improved, the millionaire population is rebounding
in the U.K. Their numbers fell by more than half in the recession, according
to a 2009 BBC report. The British Chambers of Commerce said the economy was
showing signs of leaving recession in 2009, and gross domestic product
ticked up 0.3 percent in this year's first quarter over the previous
quarter.

Our world has no shortage of mysteries: Where did life begin? Who killed
JFK? Will the BP oil
spillever
end? Why is Ozzy
Osbourne still alive? For this last conundrum, at
least, we may have an answer.

Researchers at the genome sequencing company Knome ,
based in Massachusetts, are mapping the heavy metal singer's entire genome
to get to the bottom of why rock and roll's self-proclaimed Prince of
Darkness is still kicking and screaming despite decades of relentless drug
and alcohol abuse.

Genome sequencing is an exhaustive process that ultimately determines the
order of the 3 billion chemical building blocks -- the bases abbreviated as
A, T, C, and G -- that make up the DNA of a person's 23 different pairs of
chromosomes.

The first full genome took 13 years to be sequenced and was finished in
2003. Today, analyzing a genome takes about three months and costs around
$40,000.
Researchers hope there is some key to Ozzy's longevity in his DNA. It's no
secret that Ozzy has abused an astounding number of drugs. This Science
Channel reportsays
Ozzy has described himself as a "modern miracle."

The hallowed history books of rock and roll are littered with rock stars who
died of drug overdose, from Janis Joplin to Jimi Hendrix. But through it
all, Ozzy's health has been remarkably unscathed.

Nathan Pearson, the director of research at Knome, tells the Sunday Times of
London, “Sequencing and analysing individuals with extreme medical histories
provides the greatest potential scientific value,” said Nathan Pearson,
director of research at Knome."

As if to rub it in your face, he is about to begin writing a *health advice
column *for the Sunday Times of London. One piece of advice that you can
expect from this column, "to a mother for putting her young son off
cigarettes, including: “Throw some [cigarette] ash on his cornflakes.”

By no means is Ozzy the only rock star who's been able to survive decades of
substance abuse. Researchers still have so much to learn from Keith Richards
and David Bowie!

2010-06-21 Thread Mr. Worf
Movie Review – Thirst

Thirst is a dark and complicated tragic love story, and horror movie that
takes you through several mood swings throughout the film. In the beginning
of the film, we find our main character Sang-hyun (Played by Kang-ho Song)
who is a priest that seems to be yearning to give more of himself in his
duty. He volunteers at the local hospital, as well as takes confession, but
this is not enough for him. He heard of a program in Africa that was seeking
out volunteers to be test subjects for a sickness called “Emmanuel Disease.”
When someone is infected with the disease, they begin to grow legions all
over their body and into their nose and windpipe. Soon they expel blood and
die soon after. Although this was incredibly dangerous, Sang-hyeon decided
to sign up knowing that god will heal him. He signs up for the testing and
soon after he contracts a lethal dose of the disease. Sang dies and by a
miracle he comes back to life.

Word of the miracle spreads across the world, and when he comes home to S.
Korea, he finds a large group of people wanting him to pray for them. Sang
begins to realize that he is a changed man and his faith is no longer as
strong as it used to be. Upon visiting an old neighbor, he meets a young
woman named Tae-ju (Played by Ok-bin Kim) who is in a somewhat abusive
relationship with the neighbor’s son, an ill-mannered dimwit. The neighbor
is also abusive toward the young lady and they both treat her as a servant,
by having her sit at a child’s table, and waiting on them hand and foot
during the evenings. During the day, she works at the neighbor’s kimono
shop.

Sang begins dropping by once a week to play Mahjong with the neighbor and
several of her friends. A retired police officer and man with a subservient
Filipino wife. While on his mahjong visits, Sang’s sympathy for Tae-ju
begins to grow, and soon he finds himself attracted to her. She is also
becoming attracted to him, but there is a catch. Sang is changing…

The special effects in this movie take wirework to a new high (pardon my
pun). There is a wonderful scene where Sang shows Tae-ju some of his
newfound abilities by leaping from rooftop to rooftop holding her in his
arms like superman. The camera follows them both with each leap taking us
along for the ride. Simply beautiful. There are more cool scenes sprinkled
throughout the movie that I refuse to spoil here. However, I love how the
director took something superhuman and made it look natural.

The screenplay was co-written and directed by Chan-woo Park who has captured
the number 3 spot on my all time favorite writer/directors list. If you are
not familiar with his work, I suggest renting Old boy, Sympathy for Mr.
Vengeance, and Lady Vengeance. Every film that Chan-woo Park makes has a
dark edge to it that reminds you what good filmmaking is all about.

Pros: Cool story, dark story that takes a twist on a familiar theme spins it
into a different direction. Great special effects.

Cons: Subtitles but most of the good stuff has them.

4 out of 5 stars

[scifinoir2] Why the hatred for Jaden Smith?

2010-06-21 Thread ravenadal
http://movie-critics.ew.com/2010/06/18/why-the-hatred-for-jaden-smith/

What is Jaden Smith's crime? Last weekend, the up-and-coming young actor, who
will turn 12 this July 8, starred in a remake of The Karate Kid that audiences
flocked to beyond expectation and, from all available evidence, loved. Given
that Smith is front and center in more or less every frame of the 2 hour and 20
minute movie (and given that his performance, as a kid who hides his sadness
behind a mask of surliness, is — to this critic, at least — a magnetic and
affecting piece of acting), I hope we can all agree that Jaden Smith's presence
on screen had a little something to do with the movie's success. Yet Smith's
rise has been greeted, in far too many quarters (including a number of comment
boards on ew.com, like the one on my review), with bitter, gnashing resentment.
This 11-year-old really has the haters foaming.

Jaden Smith's "The Karate Kid" wasn't supposed to score a huge $55.7 million
opening (and $112 million in two weeks).

It is done so by defying conventional Hollywood wisdom. Amazingly, it has an
almost entirely nonwhite cast. This something "The Prince of Persia" and "The
Last Airbender" were too timid to try.

But the ire from others and good reviews from here has made me want to go

Nothing in Hollywood is a slam dunk. Before hand everybody was picking "The
A-team," another remake, as the "slam dunk." Further, conventional wisdom is
that a major movie must be helmed by a white person. Lastly, what does Will
Smith's track record have to do with his son? Hollywood dominance is not
hereditary.

I'm really looking forward to seeing this film. I liked the trailers and I
love Jackie Chan. I hate the title. The story has nothing to do with Karate
which is a Japanese thing.
It is about kung-fu and China! This film's title insults billions of Chinese
people all over the world that Hollywood is so greedy to sell tickets by
exploiting the Karate Kid franchise that they think folks are too stupid to
tell the difference between Karate and Kung-fu?
All those slanty-eyed Asians are all alike, eh? Typical Hollywood willful
ignorance. They could have correctly and accurately called this film Kung-Fu
Kid and with Jackie Chan's name on it, sold just as many tickets I bet!

I'll still go for Jackie Chan, if nothing else.

[scifinoir2] Re: Asking for Movie Suggestions

2010-06-21 Thread Keith Johnson
Not a suggestion? Anyone watching any movies at the theatre? Recently I've seen
"Kings of the Evening", which was nice, and plan to see a
little-known-but-well-praised foreign flick, "The Secret in Their Eyes". It's
way off the summer-blockbuster path...

Subject: Asking for Movie Suggestions

Any recommendations on which of the big summer movies are worth seeing?

Have any of you seen Prince of Persia, Robin Hood, A-Team, Karate Kid, Splice,
Killers, Shrek, Get Him to the Greek

With the summer "blockbuster" season here, we're inundated with all the
next-big-things at the box office: all the CGI- and action-heavy movies.
Typically I start to burn out after a while, as so many of them nowadays seem
to be mediocre films based mostly on explosions, fights, and FX. "Iron Man 2"
was okay, but a bit of a disappointment. I need to watch the money I spend at
the cinema, so don't want to plop down my six bucks for something that I can
wait for on DVD. And there are some indie films like "Mother and Child" and
"Kings of the Evening" that I'd rather see, since they actually rely on plots
and good acting.

What
is Jaden Smith's crime? Last weekend, the up-and-coming young actor, who will
turn 12 this July 8, starred in a remake of The Karate Kid that audiences

The film is known as "The Kung Fu Kid" internationally and "Best Kid" in Japan.

Additionally, the reason they switched back to Karate Kid title in
the US was because of the story. He originally knew Karate and had
no hope of winning with that style. Jackie's character trains him

[scifinoir2] Re: Jaden Smith's Karate Kid Defies Hollywood wisdom

2010-06-21 Thread Kelwyn
Michael Douglass is the only second generation star to come anywhere near his
father's Hollywood success/stardom (I am talking first line stars here - which
would preclude any Martin Sheen/Charlie Sheen discussions) and Kirk Douglass
remains higher in the Hollywood firmament than Michael - it may even be argued
that Kirk made more money when adjusted for inflation. It is highly unlikely
that Jaden earning capacity will ever approach Will's.

Re: [scifinoir2] Re: Why the hatred for Jaden Smith?

2010-06-21 Thread Tracy Curtis
After reading through a few of the comments on the original article, I was
struck by how many people seem to say specifically that they like Will
Smith, but dislike Jada Pinkett-Smith and dislike the kid because he looks
like her. Actually, they won't name her. They just call her "his mother."
That seems scary, but somehow typical.

Jaden, in the Letterman interview, says that the name is a nod to the
producer of the original film because of the help, and stamp of approval he
gave them.

Jaden, in the Letterman interview, says that the name is a nod to the
producer of the original film because of the help, and stamp of approval he
gave them.

[scifinoir2] CBS enters India TV market with Reliance

2010-06-21 Thread Kelwyn

CBS eyes India TV foray with Reliance

By Joe Leahy in Mumbai

Published: May 31 2010 21:12 | Last updated: May 31 2010 21:12

Reliance Media World, controlled by Indian industrialist Anil Ambani, is in
talks to form a television joint venture with CBS Broadcasting of the US in
what would be the latest foray by a US network into India.

CBS was one of "a number of groups" Reliance was in talks with about the plan
to roll out a group of channels for Indian pay television, a Reliance
spokesperson said, declining to give details.

The partnership would give CBS access to one of the fastest growing emerging
media and entertainment markets.

India has the second-biggest number of cable viewing households after China at
more than 80m.

This, together with India's relatively liberal foreign ownership and content
regimes has made it the most important market in Asia for many media groups.

Indian television generated Rs257bn ($5.5bn) in revenue last year and clocked a
compound annual growth rate of 12 per cent between 2006 and 2009, according to
a report by KPMG, the consultancy.

CBS could bring its hit television sitcoms to India in competition with the
existing local ventures of US-based networks, including News Corp, Time Warner,
Viacom and Walt Disney.

I gifted myself with a black wii console this Father's Day weekend, hooked
everything up, inserted my Netflix wii disk and watched "The Machine Girl" on
my 42 inch flat screen televison. It is everything Mr. Worf said and a bag of
chips! The "Power Rangers with splatter" segments were giddily awesome and I
love me some girl power bonding with machine guns and power saws!

[scifinoir2] Re: Why the hatred for Jaden Smith?

2010-06-21 Thread tetsuwanatom1
"We" (that would be the American we) hate Jaden Smith because of the
implication that his career is being handed to him. "We" generally hate that in
all professions from politics to business, and especially in Hollywood because
of it's reputation for advancement going along lines of who you know, not what
you know/can do. Only in sports, which has a rep for earned merit, do "we" not
begrudge successful scions of famous fathers/mothers.

Yes, if his films/projects fail it wont have anything to do with his parents
but that really isn't the point.

He isn't helping matters with his constant B-boy stance-ing and mean mugging
for cameras and having hair that is ridiculed regularly on Bossip, etc. He
really made himself that much more annoying before setting out to prove himself
as a talent.

I was dead set against seeing the remake for all the usual reasons + Jaden
however the previews turned me. I think Chan's "serious" acting is underrated
so I get a chance to see that w/out having to resort to region 3 DVD.
Resultingly I'll be forced to give young Smith a shot.

One of the most successful acting families in history is the Barrymore family,
with actors going back to the early 20th century.  Drew has been very
successful in her own right since her days as the cute kid actor. While one may
argue about the types of movies she does, or debate her acting ability, she's
undeniably able to get and create work, having been a producer as well as an
actress. Besides, she really is a student of film history, and after i heard
her on NPR's "Fresh Air" saying how "honored" she was to speak to host Terry
Gross, I upped her assessment in my book. Any actress who regularly listens to
NPR and counts being on it an honor is okay in my book.

Saw your original post and felt sad I had nothing interesting to offer. But
the new Predators movie opens July 9th and I will be there for the 11:00 am
Friday showing of course. Also on my "see at the theater for the special
effects vs waiting for PPV" list:
June 30th - Twilight Saga: Eclipse
July 2nd - The Last Airbender
July 16th - Inception
August 27th - Resident Evil: Afterlife

Other than Predators maybe, not a very exciting summer movie list for me I'm
affraid.

[scifinoir2] Director del Toro has quit the Hobbit?

Saw this on www.scifimoviepage.com/upcoming/previews/hobbit.html
 :

STATUS UPDATE (07/06/2010): Director del Toro has quit the project
citing incessant production delays due to MGM's financial woes: "In
light of ongoing delays in the setting of a start date for filming The
Hobbit, I am faced with the hardest decision of my life," del Toro told
a Lord of the Rings fan website. "After nearly two years of living,
breathing and designing a world as rich as Tolkien's Middle Earth, I
must, with great regret, take leave from helming these wonderful
pictures."

Anyone hear anything about this?

I've been really immersed in Bollywood and Asian films on DVD/online
lately. "Raaavan" was the best Indian film I've seen in a couple of
years. "Kites" was the most accessible, as it's in English. It's
playing near you as "Kites: The Remix", which was re-edited by
Brett Ratner.

I'm down for Last Airbender and Inception, but I gotta say...I'm
really not personally looking forward to any big budget films
except Tron Legacy. I'm way more excited to see "Scott Pilgrim" than
anything else this summer.

7th-Graders Discover Mysterious Cave on Mars

By Clara Moskowitz
Senior Writer

posted: 21 June 2010

A group of seventh-graders in California has discovered a mysterious cave
on Mars as part of a research project to study images taken by a NASA
spacecraft orbiting the red planet.

The 16 students from teacher Dennis Mitchell's 7th-grade science class at
Evergreen Middle School in Cottonwood, Calif., found what looks to be a
Martian skylight - a hole in the roof of a cave on Mars
[http://www.space.com/scienceastronomy/091026-mm-mars-caves.html].

The intrepid students were participating in the Mars Student Imaging
Program at the Mars Space Flight Facility at Arizona State University. The
program allows students to frame a research question and then commission a
Mars-orbiting camera to take an image to answer their question.

resembled features seen on other parts of Mars in a 2007 study by Glen
Cushing, a U.S. Geological Survey scientist.

Cushing suggested that these anomalous pit craters
[http://www.space.com/scienceastronomy/070605_mars_hole.html ] are like
skylights - places where a small part of the roof of a cave or a lava tube
had collapsed, opening the area below the surface to the sky.

The caves are thought to result from volcanic activity on the red planet.
At some point lava channels likely carved out caverns in the rock, and
then left behind tunnel, or "lava tubes," when the eruptions were over.
They would have been covered when a solid ceiling of cooled material
settled on top, and then sections of the ceiling likely collapsed at some
point to form the skylight entrances.

Scientists aren't sure what type of materials or deposits could be stored
inside.

"This pit is certainly new to us," Cushing told the students. "And it is
only the second one known to be associated with Pavonis Mons."

He estimated the pit to be approximately 620 by 520 feet (190 by 160
meters) wide and 380 feet (115 meters) deep at least.

The young researchers had initially set out to hunt for lava tubes, a
common volcanic feature on Earth and Mars.

"The students developed a research project focused on finding the most
common locations of lava tubes on Mars," Mitchell said. "Do they occur
most often near the summit of a volcano, on its flanks, or the plains
surrounding it?"

The class commissioned a main photo and a backup image of Mars' Pavonis
Monsvolcano
[http://www.space.com/scienceastronomy/solarsystem/mars_daily_020507.html],
targeted on a region that hadn't been imaged up close.

The pictures were taken by NASA's Mars Odyssey orbiter
[http://www.space.com/missionlaunches/090312-odyssey-reboot.html ] using
its Thermal Emission Imaging System (THEMIS) instrument. Both images
showed lava tubes, as the students had hoped.

But the backup photo provided another surprise: a small, round black spot.
It was a hole on Mars leading into the buried cave, researchers said.

The students have submitted their site to be further imaged by the High
Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE) camera on NASA's Mars
Reconnaissance Orbiter, which could reveal enough detail to see inside the
hole in the ground.

"The Mars Student Imaging Program is certainly one of the greatest
educational programs ever developed," Mitchell said. "It gives the
students a good understanding of the way research is conducted and how
that research can be important for the scientific community. This has been
a wonderful experience."
