He is a black-clad masked outlaw who defends the people of the land against tyrannical officials and other villains. Joaquin Murrieta, also called the Robin Hood of El Dorado, was a semi-legendary figure in California during the California Gold Rush of the 1850s. He was either an infamous bandit or a Mexican patriot, depending on one's point of view. Murrieta was partly the inspiration for the fictional character of Zorro. His name has, for some political activists, symbolized resistance against Anglo-American economic and cultural domination in California. In fact, a character with his name appears in The Mask of Zorro. In the film, after Joaquin's death, his (fictional) brother, Alejandro (Antonio Banderas), becomes the new Zorro and later kills Captain Love in revenge. That a man could spend months stuck in diplomatic limbo living in an airport may seem far-fetched, but in fact, the movie is inspired by a real-life character who lived at terminal one of Paris Charles De Gaulle airport. The living urban legend is Mehran Nasseri, known as “Sir Alfred” to those who work at the airport. Stranded without papers, Nasseri was a stateless refugee from Iran, unwanted by any nation. Having claimed to have one British parent, he decided to settle in the UK in 1986, but en route to there in 1988, his briefcase containing his papers was stolen in Paris. Despite this setback, he boarded the plane for London but was promptly returned to France when he failed to present a passport to British immigration. He was initially arrested by the French, but then released as his entry to the airport was legal and he had no country of origin to be returned to. A red plastic bench beside a luggage store was his home for no less than 18 years. Director Steven Spielberg may have moved the airport to New York for his movie and made Hank's character East European, but there's no doubt who the movie is based on. Nasseri's life at the airport ended in July 2006 when he was hospitalized and his sitting place dismantled. The life of Ilse Koch, a concentration camp guard nicknamed The Bitch of Buchenwald, was strikingly similar to that of Hanna Schmitz, the role played by Winslet in the Oscar-tipped film. Like Schmitz, Koch came from a poor background. She married Karl Koch, a close friend of Adolf Hitler, in 1936, and accompanied him when he was made commandant of Buchenwald camp the following year. As a supervisor of the camp's female guards, she whipped and beat prisoners. Witnesses said she forced prisoners to rape one another and was eventually disciplined by Nazi chiefs for her brutality. As Schmitz does in the film, Koch killed herself after being sentenced to life in prison for her crimes perpetrated in a concentration camp. Before her suicide, Koch had been reunited with her illegitimate son, who had only recently discovered his mother's identity and crimes. He wrote poems and sent them to her in prison. In the film, Schmitz is effectively reunited with Michael Berg, a former lover who is shocked to see her in the dock when he attends a war crimes trial. Re: [scifinoir2] New startup uses Internet to predict the future
I remember reading about the first AI using neural networks back in the late 80s/ early 90s that had software that predicted stock market movements. They made a ton of money off of the early predictions but lost a bundle later on. I think it was a company that developed out of a MIT research lab. Temporal Analytics sounds like the movie Imposter or Minority Report. Or some other mystery movie set in the future. After a fashion, Mr Worf. I dumped Yahu several months ago, using it only because four people I know apparently refuse to read the e-mail I sent them telling them that I was dumping the account. The rest of the stuff, I had forwarded to this account. A couple of things I had forwarded and answered were bounced back to the Yahu account. Re: [scifinoir2] 10 most obvious Hollywood Rip-Offs
Funny, I especially love the way the author sequed from Dracula/Nosferatu (which was a great flick, by the way) into Varsity Blues ripping off Friday Night Lights. This list, of course, is so short it's funny. They could have listed dozens of crappy ripoffs that are at least as egregious. Star Wars alone generated so many ripoffs it's incredible. For Raiders of the Lost Ark, I thought of the unfortunate High Road to China, starring Tom Selleck as the adventuring biplane pilot. The ironic thing about that one, of course, is Selleck was originally offered the job of Indiana Jones in Raiders, but had to turn it down due to his commitment to Magnum, P.I.. But King Solomon's Mines is a much more blatant--and inferior--copycat. - Original Message - From: Kelwyn ravena...@yahoo.com To: scifinoir2@yahoogroups.com Sent: Thursday, August 5, 2010 1:29:40 AM Subject: [scifinoir2] 10 most obvious Hollywood Rip-Offs http://www.premiere.com/List/10-Most-Obvious-Hollywood-Rip-Offs 10 Most Obvious Hollywood Rip-Offs Wait, what's that? Sometimes filmmakers go for the easy cash-in rather than create something original? Hell you say! By: Nick Starkey 08/03/2010 03:21 pm It's one thing to rely solely on sequels and reboots to bolster an industry in the midst of a creative dry spell so severe it makes the years before cave paintings seem like the Renaissance, but it's another to admit defeat so soundly that you half-assedly send blatant knock-offs into theaters and hope no one will notice. Here are some of the most egregious examples – we're sure there are more, but that's why the Hittites invented the comments section. 10. Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief Rips Off: Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone and the rest of the franchise thereafter. Percy Jackson is so shamelessly banking on spill-over Harry Potter success that it employs the director of the first two Potter flicks (Chris Columbus), features a camp for magically-powered kids called Camp Half Blood (Prince is it?), and even uses the same font for the poster art. What's worse, these books started as equally Potter-wannabe young adult novels, so their lack of originality can be traced back to the shelves at Barnes Noble. 9. Smokey and the Hotwire Gang Rips Off: Smokey and the Bandit Seriously, this movie stopped just short of hiring a Burt Reynolds look alike. If you're going to cobble together rednecks, fast cars, and lots of hip-at-the-time CB slang, the least you could do was NOT PUT SMOKEY IN THE TITLE. Rejected titles included Bandity Bandits Who Smoke Smokey and The Police and the Outlaw. 8. Ghoulies Rips Off: Gremlins The horror genre is generally one of the most cannibalistic (OK, OK…haw haw) genres around – wearing out trends like mall-hopping teenagers. So it's not totally surprising that the success of Gremlins spawned (again, we know) a bunch of tiny killer critters flicks. Like Ghoulies (and, well, Critters too)—both just Chinatown-level knock-offs of Joe Dante's horror comedy. 7. Mac and Me Rips Off: E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial This is a rare case of a movie rip-off doing its inspiration one better. Sure, Mac and Me – lonely young boy befriends a cute and kindly alien and then runs afoul of government agents – at first doesn't have an original bone in its body. But then it hits you with a full-on car chase involving a kid in a wheelchair. Yes—cars v. wheelchair. Even Spielberg didn't have the brass ones to pull that off. 6. Varsity Blues Rips Off: Friday Night Lights F.W. Murnau originally wanted to adapt Bram Stoker's Dracula , but the late author's estate nixed the idea and a quick-thinking Murnau changed his lead vampire's name from Count Dracula to Count Orlok and his movie from Dracula to Nosferatu . Why is this relevant? Change classic vampire novel to well-regarded football book and genius silent film director to the guy who did Norbit and you'd pretty much have the story of how Varsity Blues hit theaters before Lights. 5. Sleepaway Camp Rips Off: Friday the 13th Once again, you have to give credit where credit is due. Sure, Sleepaway apes Friday right down to the poster art, but where Friday gave you this classic bait-and-switch (spoiler if you're 8 years old): The killer is actually Jason's mother! Sleepaway hits you with: The female killer is really a psycho boy raised as a girl by his deranged aunt, and here's a full-frontal of his dong to prove it! 4. Hollywood Knights Rips Off: American Graffiti George Lucas' breakout film was clearly made in response to his own childhood, growing up as he did in the thick of California's 50s and 60s car culture. Hollywood Knights was clearly made by someone who saw American Graffiti and felt it needed more boobs, penis jokes, and farts. And Tony Danza. 3. It turned out that he'd seen the film on its opening weekend in a private screening room with a number of industry elder statesmen, including at least two former studio chiefs and a couple of their young offspring. After the movie was over, the industry elders were shaking their heads in disbelief, appalled by the film's lack of clarity, having been absolutely unable to follow the film's often convoluted story. But before anyone could register their complaints, one of the younger people on hand, flush with excitement, praised the film to the rooftops. To him, it was such a thrill ride that if the projectionist could show the film again, he'd sit through it again right away. But what makes Inception so fascinating is that it joins a host of groundbreaking movies that have inspired either a generational or critical divide. The contentious reaction to Inception has a lot in common with the response to such equally daring films as Breathless, Bonnie and Clyde, The Wild Bunch, A Clockwork Orange, Taxi Driver, Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction and Natural Born Killers, to name but a few. People either love 'em or hate 'em, with young moviegoers usually being the first to wrap them in a firm embrace. -- If all the world's a stage and we are merely players, who the bloody hell wrote the script? -- Charles E Grant http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fQUxw9aUVik -- If all the world's a stage and we are merely players, who the bloody hell wrote the script? -- Charles E Grant http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fQUxw9aUVik -- If all the world's a stage and we are merely players, who the bloody hell wrote the script? -- Charles E Grant http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fQUxw9aUVik

My sensory matrix appears to be restored so I can interact with you. Who are you and where are we? *We are the Drolmecs and you are now on the planet Zindrol. * I asked them, Do you know of the Milky Way? Someone replied, *Which way would be milky? * It is my home galaxy. Wait, I can show you. I emitted a panoramic view of the Milky Way onto a wall and indicated the general position of my solar system. I am from here. My hosts perused the image and suddenly one of them was amazed to find what he believed was Zindrol, the clue was a tri-nary star system. It would appear that I have traveled to a point about half way to the center of the galaxy. I am puzzled, Autonav seems to have been on course. But, this stop was not in my instructions to Autonav. I explained to my hosts that something has gone awry with my navigation plan. One of my hosts explained that I was intercepted when I appeared on one of their tracking systems. Ahhh, so that’s why I was in a container. *It was used for our and your protection, said one of my hosts*. Just then a compliment of armed guards joined us. They treated me as a prisoner. I explained that I was Marteel, a simple explorer on a scouting mission. To no avail. I was escorted from this complex and into another craft. In a few moments I was taken into a security center and restrained. *Where is your craft?* Craft? I queried. Ah, my kind no longer use crafts, we use personal nano-shields, or a bubble of sorts. It protects us by creating an impenetrable environment to contain and protect us as we travel. *Well, how do you propel yourself through open space without thrusters? * We use magnetic fields generated by stars, planets and artifacts along our path. Autonav alternatively attracts me toward or repels me from space borne objects and fields; and thereby executes my course. *What is an autonav?* It is what I call my *auto*nomous goal seeking *nav*igation subsystem. I enter my destination to Autonav which uses these EM forces to manage my course. I use the travel time to conduct myriad experiments and analysis; otherwise I hibernate. But, I think Autonav needs a restart now. Am I a prisoner here? I’m a simple explorer and mean you no harm. *We are still very confused Marteel. Without a vessel, where are your computers, life support subsystems, communications equipment and the like? * As I indicated, my vessel is my nano-shield. Specific regions of nanites around my shield are configured to perform many tasks, including communications, EM and subspace emitters and detectors, and many other sensors for various purposes. My internal environment is also managed at the nano scale, by simply reconfiguring space borne particles into atoms, molecules, and substances as needed… oxygen, nitrogen, and so on. Of course, most of the raw molecules are already space borne and must be collected and re-processed as needed by my nanites. Several of my hosts began to speak at once with clear excitement… but one of the officials interrupted them.

But who ever thought that a scientist at Michigan Technological University would be serious about building a working invisibility cloak? That's exactly what Elena Semouchkina, an associate professor of electrical and computer engineering at Michigan Tech, is doing. She has found ways to use magnetic resonance to capture rays of visible light and route them around objects, rendering those objects invisible to the human eye. Semouchkina and colleagues at the Pennsylvania State University, where she is also an adjunct professor, recently reported on their research in the journal Applied Physics Letters, published by the American Institute of Physics. Her co-authors were Douglas Werner and Carlo Pantano of Penn State and George Semouchkin, who works at Michigan Tech and Penn State. They describe developing a nonmetallic cloak that uses identical glass resonators made of chalcogenide glass, a type of dielectric material (one that does not conduct electricity). In computer simulations, the cloak made objects hit by infrared waves—approximately one micron or one-millionth of a meter long—disappear from view. Earlier attempts by other researchers used metal rings and wires. Ours is the first to do the cloaking of cylindrical objects with glass, Semouchkina said. Her invisibility cloak uses metamaterials, which are artificial materials having properties that do not exist in nature, made of tiny glass resonators arranged in a concentric pattern in the shape of a cylinder. The spokes of the concentric configuration produce the magnetic resonance required to bend light waves around an object, making it invisible. Metamaterials, which use small resonators instead of atoms or molecules of natural materials, straddle the boundary between materials science and electrical engineering. They were named one of the top three physics discoveries of the decade by the American Physical Society. A new researcher specializing in metamaterials is joining Michigan Tech's faculty this fall. Semouchkina and her team now are testing an invisibility cloak re-scaled to work at microwave frequencies and made of ceramic resonators. They're using Michigan Tech's anechoic chamber, a cave-like compartment in an Electrical Energy Resources Center lab, lined with highly absorbent charcoal-gray foam cones. There, antennas transmit and receive microwaves, which are much longer than infrared light, up to several centimeters long. They have cloaked metal cylinders two to three inches in diameter and three to four inches high. Starting from these experiments, we want to move to higher frequencies and smaller wavelengths, the researcher said. The most exciting applications will be at the frequencies of visible light. So one day, could the police cloak a swat team or the Army, a tank? It is possible in principle, but not at this time, Semouchkina said. Her work is supported in part by a grant from the National Science Foundation. Michigan Technological University ([ http://mtu.edu ]mtu.edu) is a leading public research university developing new technologies and preparing students to create the future for a prosperous and sustainable world. The company, which gets almost all of its funding from the Pentagon, is responsible for overseeing many of the nation's most classified programs, including the development of multibillion-dollar spy satellites and rockets that lift them into space. I've spent most of my life keeping secrets in this business, said Joseph F. Wambolt, 76, a rocket propulsion engineer who joined Aerospace the year it was founded 50 years ago and still won't divulge what he's working on, even to his wife. At Aerospace, we've always tried to keep a low profile. But the days of lying low may be over. Wanda M. Austin, president and chief executive of Aerospace, said she saw the El Segundo-based research center taking on new roles that could increasingly bring it out from under the shroud of secrecy. Under President Obama's proposal to outsource more space missions to private ventures, the government will want more oversight of missions carried out by private businesses, such as Hawthorne's Space Exploration Technologies Corp., or SpaceX. Aerospace could be the organization to do that, Austin said. There's a new energy and a new direction for space, she said. We're excited about the promise that the industry holds for us. Aerospace is neither a defense contractor nor part of the Air Force, which manages military space programs. Rather, Aerospace is a federally funded brain trust for the Pentagon's $26-billion space program, which far exceeds [ http://www.latimes.com/topic/science-technology/space-programs/nasa-ORGOV98.topic ]NASA's budget of $18 billion and has increased almost 90% since 2000. Although it's not well known outside defense circles, it is regarded as one of the nation's most important assets. Aerospace scientists oversee the technical side of contracts awarded to defense firms to make sure the work is being done properly. A separate Pentagon agency audits the contracts. The firm also provides consultation and advice to both the government and the defense industry on how to best develop spacecraft. In all, 87% of its budget comes from military contracts and the rest from civilian government agencies such as NASA. Aerospace is the glue to the Pentagon's space infrastructure, said John Pike, director of Globalsecurity.org, a website for military policy research. It's an independent voice that's has become a vital component to national security. Despite proposed cutbacks in Pentagon spending, Aerospace's budget increased to $868 million last year — its largest — and Austin believes it will be busier than ever in the coming years. In addition to its potential new role for private space ventures, the National Reconnaissance Office, or NRO, the umbrella organization that operates spy satellites, has said it's set to begin the most aggressive launch schedule it has undertaken in 25 years. That is expected to keep Aerospace engineers and scientists busy for a while. The research center was formed in 1960 at the height of the Cold War as a way to avoid a potential conflict of interest. At the time, a technology company was about to begin development of a spacecraft, but it was also advising the Pentagon on what kind of space systems it should consider funding. The settlement prohibits Intel from the practice of paying customers to buy its computer chips exclusively or to refuse to buy chips from other manufacturers. It also prohibits Intel from redesigning its chips purely to harm a competitor. Intel also agreed not to retaliate against computer makers if they do business with non-Intel suppliers. In addition, the settlement http://www.ftc.gov/opa/2010/08/intel.shtmrequires Intel to modify agreements with other chip makers giving them the freedom to merge or form joint ventures without the threat of being sued by Intel for patent infringement. Intel is also required to maintain for at least six years a feature that will not limit the performance of graphics processing chips made by others, and to disclose that its computer compilers might discriminate between its chips and those of other companies, and therefore not might register all of the features of non-Intel chips. The trade commission brought its suit in Decemberhttp://www.nytimes.com/2009/12/17/technology/companies/17chip.html?ref=intelcorporation, claiming that Intel, the world’s leading computer chip maker, has illegally used its dominant market position for at least a decade to stifle competition and strengthen its monopoly. The agency has no legal authority to assess fines, although it can bring a civil suit for future violations of its settlement order. And the settlement requires Intel to establish a $10 million fund to help business customers reformulate their software products if they were misled by Intel. Jon Leibowitz, the chairman of the F.T.C., said that the settlement “provides ‘fencing-in’ protection to ensure that Intel doesn’t come up with new ways to undermine competition.” “Just as important, it provides this relief right away, so it helps consumers now, which is critical in a dynamic industry such as this one,” Mr. Leibowitz said. The commission will now seek public comment before the settlement is completed. In a statementhttp://www.intel.com/pressroom/archive/releases/2010/20100804corp.htm, Intel’s general counsel, A. Douglas Melamed, said the settlement allowed the company “to put an end to the expense and distraction of the F.T.C. litigation.” This agreement provides a framework that will allow us to continue to compete and to provide our customers the best possible products at the best prices, Mr. Melamed said. In agreeing to the settlement, Intel did not admit to any wrongdoing or that the accusations were true. The agency brought its claims under Section 5 of the F.T.C. Act, a law that is broader than the antitrust laws and that also affords Intel a measure of protection against

That ep of the Universe will air again at 6 pm EST. The Bruce Lee special is halfway through its rerun right now (5 pm EST). There's a later a new ep dealing with Mars. I may catch some again, juggling between that and Shark Week on Discovery. I may have to forego watching the new eps of Burn Notice, Royal Pains, and White Collar, but since those shows are rerun eleventy million times, it's not a problem. - Original Message - From: Martin Baxter martinbaxt...@gmail.com To: scifinoir2@yahoogroups.com Sent: Thursday, August 5, 2010 3:40:34 PM Subject: Re: [scifinoir2] Great Shows on The History Channel Today Thanks, Keith, though I've probably missed the entire run (just walked in from the street). Good one! I need to check this out immediately! Some of the movies in the trailer I have seen clips from before, but they were (mistakenly?) labeled as Indian films. I guess because the person that posted them couldn't tell the difference. Indian films do not allow kissing, nudity or any type of sexual conduct. If you think the movies in this trailer is cool you should check out the Japanese Pinky Violence movies. Some of them are brilliant. (Just ask Quentin Tarantino who ripped off a lot of them!) [scifinoir2] Murphy's Law, meet Newton's Flaw
http://voices.washingtonpost.com/comic-riffs/ http://voices.washingtonpost.com/comic-riffs/ The apple of our eyesore: Check out THIS Marvel cover for a real surprise [issac.jpg] Murphy's Law, meet Newton's Flaw. On Marvel's S.H.I.E.L.D. book out this week, the cover (No. 3 Variant edition) is striking for at least several reasons. One reason is Dustin Weaver's beautiful artwork. Another reason is the equally eye-catching typo. Comic Riffs is not throwing stones here, especially considering that when it comes to stones, The Post's archives are likely littered with misspellings of Oliver Stone, Joss Stone, Stone Phillips, Stone Cold Steve Austin and even Sly and the Family Stone. Happens to the best of us, especially in a belt-tightening era when some editorial staffs across the country are forced to go with fewer line editors, copy editors or proofreaders. Yet it's especially glaring that a cover that might hope to educate young readers -- yes, a well-intentioned mission of more, um, gravity -- reportedly misspells Sir Isaac Newton without anyone catching it prior to press. Comic Riffs mentions only because if you've ever hoped to break into big-time comics as a proofreader, you might consider applying to Marvel right about now. Oh, and if you do, you might also point out this Spider-Man typo of anniversary http://comicsnexus.insidepulse.com/2010/08/01/marvels-comic-book-cover-\ and-promotional-problems-continue/ -- also caught by our colleagues at Bleeding Cool.

[scifinoir2] International Space Station: By the Numbers
http://www.space.com/news/international-space-station-by-the-numbers-100803.html International Space Station: By the Numbers By Remy Melina posted: 03 August 2010 A major cooling system failure on the International Space Station has thrust the 12-year-old orbiting laboratory into the limelight. NASA plans two emergency spacewalks, Friday and Monday, to replace a pump in one of the two U.S. cooling system loops attached to the station's exterior. The ISS is the [ http://www.lifeslittlemysteries.com/how-big-is-the-international-space-station-0776/ ]largest spacecraft ever built, and its assembly has been ongoing for more than a decade. Its first component, the Zarya control module that provided the station's initial propulsion and power, was launched Nov. 20, 1998. As NASA works to [ http://www.space.com/missionlaunches/space-station-spacewalk-repair-delay-100803.html ]repair the space station, SPACE.com has rounded up some interesting facts about it. Here's a look at the International Space Station by the numbers according to NASA: 100 billion: Estimated cost of the ISS in U.S. dollars. This gives the space station the grandiose title of being the world's most expensive single object. 816,000: How much the ISS currently weighs in pounds (370,131 kilograms). Once completed, the ISS will have a mass that on Earth would weigh almost 925,000 lb. (419,600 kg), the equivalent of more than 330 cars. 220: The average distance in miles above Earth's surface the ISS orbits (250 kilometers). On a clear day, the ISS is [ http://www.space.com/php/multimedia/imagegallery/igviewer.php?gid=393 ]easily visible to the naked eye from the ground. 147: The [ http://www.space.com/php/multimedia/imagegallery/igviewer.php?gid=57 ]number of spacewalks taken so far to build, maintain or repair the space station. 135: How many times you would have to cross North America to travel a distance equal that traveled by the ISS in one day (about the distance to the moon and back). 110: The number of kilowatts of power that the ISS will be supplied with by an acre of solar panels. 99: The percentage of the ISS structure that has been completed. 90: The number of minutes it takes the ISS to circle the Earth as it travels at 4.8 miles (7.7 km) per second. 52: The number of computers aboard the ISS to control its systems. 14: The number of pounds of crew-expelled air that the ISS systems recycle each day (6.4 kg). Of this, 6 pounds (2.7 kg) comes from the U.S. members of the ISS crew. The water produced by this recycling is used for technical or drinking purposes. 13: The number of rooms on the station, including a small, seven-window lookout dome that provides [ http://.space.com/php/multimedia/imagegallery/igviewer.php?imgid=5257gid=385index=0 ]stunning views of Earth from orbit. 8: The total length, in miles, of wire that will connect the electrical power system (12.9 km). 6: The number of months that an astronaut typically lives and works on the ISS during a mission. Six is also the size of the crew currently aboard the ISS. 5: The number of unmanned spacecraft currently used to haul supplies to the space station or contracted to do so in the future. Current robotic spacecraft include Russia's Progress vehicle, the European Space Agency's Automated Transfer Vehicle and Japan's H-2 Transfer Vehicle. NASA also has contracts with the company SpaceX to provide cargo flights using its unmanned Dragon spacecraft, and with Orbital Sciences in Virginia to do the same on its planned Cygnus spacecraft. These private spaceships are slated for test flights in the next year or so. 4: The tons of food required to support a crew of three for about six months (3,630 kg). The ISS crews' favorites include shrimp cocktail, tortillas, barbecue beef brisket, breakfast sausage links, chicken fajitas, vegetable quiche, macaroni and cheese, candy-coated chocolates and cherry blueberry cobbler. Lemonade is the most popular drink. 3: The size of the ISS' first crew in 2000, and the number of astronauts or cosmonauts ferried to the station on a single Russian Soyuz spacecraft. 2: The size of the smallest crew ever aboard the ISS since long-duration missions began. 1.5: The number of 747s that would provide the equivalent volume of space that is pressurized within the ISS, allowing the crew to work without spacesuits. Of the 33,023 cubic feet (935 cubic meters) of pressurized volume, about 15,000 (425 cubic meters) is habitable volume where astronauts can live - more room than a conventional three-bedroom house.
