[scifinoir2] Movie Review – Ip Man

2010-08-08 Thread Mr. Worf
Movie Review – Ip Man

The movie Ip Man (It sounds funny but they go by last name first in China)
was a surprisingly well-made little martial art film. Partially based on Man
Yip the Wing Chun master from Hong Kong, it follows his beginning from his
life in a small town called Fo Shen in the mid 1930s. Fo Shen is famous for
its “Southern” style Kung Fu and has several schools located in the heart of
the city.

Ip (Played by Donny Yen) is well known in the town for being the absolute
best martial artist in the region, but he does not teach and has no
students. Despite his lack of a school, he is heavily involved in the Kung
Fu social scene and is often challenged by teachers attempting to make a
name for themselves. This is totally against his wife’s wishes. So despite
Ip’s daily training, and his prime skill his wife would much rather have him
go into business with Ip’s brother a subdued businessman. Soon, a baddie
from the north appears with several men. He asks for the location of the
Kung Fu schools and challenges every teacher on the block. It is not long
before he hears about Ip and sets out to finds him.

There is much more to the movie that I will not give away, but I must say
that this film is on par with the old styled kick/punch Kung Fu movies that
were made over the years. Very little wire work and great action! I highly
recommend it!

There is a part 2 to this film that I will also be reviewing as well.

Directed by: Wilson Yip

Pros: Great believable Kung Fu action. It reminded me of so many Kung Fu
films that I have watched over the years on a Saturday night. The historical
subplot took me by surprise.

Cons: It is a little slow in the middle of the film, but it is
understandable because the film switches modes.

In Cantonese, Chinese, and Japanese with English subtitles

one, and share your enthusiasm for it, as well as recommending it to one and
all.

It was just a matter of time before they did something like this. The
problem is what happens when a bot accidentally starts a firefight and heats
up the cold war between the two countries?

I just watched a video by P.W. Singer on 'Military robots and the future of
war.' In his video, Singer said that there are already 5300 drones in the
field and a drone race is beginning to heat up between the countries to come
up with their own robotic super drones.

Its quite possible that in the next 20-30 years there could be fantastic
robot wars between the countries because there isn't the same morality
questions involved. A robot does not ask questions about are you sure that
you want to blow up that village. It doesn't care if it is a tank or a
little girl. It just does its job.

You do not have to convince a robot that he will receive 700 virgins when
it gets to heaven. It will just blow up when you tell it from the safety of
your home. So the face terrorism may morph into the face of a robot jockey
from a computer or a pre-programmed bot with a gps link and a dozen pounds
 of C4.

With all of our creativity no one seems to be applying it to stopping war
instead of making it easier to wage war.

I've been researching artificial intelligence and consciousness
 for HowStuffWorks.com http://www.howstuffworks.com/. While exploring
the possibilities of machines with self-awareness, I'm drawn to the debate
about whether an artificially intelligent construct has the same rights as a
biological entity. In other words, if we built a robot or computer that
could seemingly think on its own and was aware of its own existence, should
we give it the same rights and privileges we have as humans?

The question itself may be moot. Our own understanding of the human brain
is still limited. While some scientists and doctors are working on building
a computer simulation of the brain, they're doing so without knowing all the
details of how the brain works. It's like finding a mysterious machine and
then reconstructing it without actually understanding what makes it tick. It
may be impossible for us to create a machine capable of real thought and
 self-awareness.

To make the debate even more complicated, there's no way to know if
machine consciousness would resemble human consciousness. When it comes to
the conscious mind, we have a very small sample size from which we can
extrapolate. While a machine brain would be the product of human ingenuity
(or possibly the product of another machine that was itself the product of
human ingenuity), it's impossible to know right now if a conscious, thinking
machine would have an intelligence comparable to ours. Would it experience
emotion (simulated or otherwise)? Would it come to the conclusion that
people are at best a messy threat that should be eliminated? Or would it
just process the tasks we give it and never think beyond those parameters?

There are dozens of science fiction stories that deal with machine
consciousness and the ethical dilemmas that follow. There are doomsday tales
 that suggest

I've been researching artificial intelligence and consciousness
 for HowStuffWorks.com http://www.howstuffworks.com/. While exploring
the possibilities of machines with self-awareness, I'm drawn to the debate
about whether an artificially intelligent construct has the same rights as
 a
biological entity. In other words, if we built a robot or computer that
could seemingly think on its own and was aware of its own existence, should
we give it the same rights and privileges we have as humans?

The question itself may be moot. Our own understanding of the human
brain is still limited. While some scientists and doctors are working on
building a computer simulation of the brain, they're doing so without
knowing all the details of how the brain works. It's like finding a
mysterious machine and then reconstructing it without actually
 understanding
what makes it tick. It may be impossible for us to create a machine capable
 of real thought and self-awareness.

To make the debate even more complicated, there's no way to know if
machine consciousness would resemble human consciousness. When it comes to
the conscious mind, we have a very small sample size from which we can
extrapolate. While a machine brain would be the product of human ingenuity

It is not
long before he hears about Ip and sets out to finds him.

In Cantonese, Chinese, and Japanese with English subtitles

 for HowStuffWorks.com http://www.howstuffworks.com/. While exploring
the possibilities of machines with self-awareness, I'm drawn to the debate
about whether an artificially intelligent construct has the same rights
 as a
biological entity. In other words, if we built a robot or computer that
could seemingly think on its own and was aware of its own existence,
 should
we give it the same rights and privileges we have as humans?

The question itself may be moot. Our own understanding of the human
brain is still limited. While some scientists and doctors are working on
building a computer simulation of the brain, they're doing so without
knowing all the details of how the brain works. It's like finding a
mysterious machine and then reconstructing it without actually
 understanding
what makes it tick. It may be impossible for us to create a machine
 capable
 of real thought and self-awareness.

To make the debate even more complicated,

  Movie Review – Ip Man

The movie Ip Man (It sounds funny but they go by last name first in

Man Yip the Wing Chun master from Hong Kong, it follows his beginning from his
life in a small town called Fo Shen in the mid 1930s. Fo Shen is famous for its
“Southern” style Kung Fu and has several schools located in the heart of the
city.

Ip (Played by Donny Yen) is well known in the town for being the absolute
best martial artist in the region, but he does not teach and has no students.
Despite his lack of a school, he is heavily involved in the Kung Fu social
scene and is often challenged by teachers attempting to make a name for
themselves. This is totally against his wife’s wishes. So despite Ip’s daily
training, and his prime skill his wife would much rather have him go into
business with Ip’s brother a subdued businessman. Soon, a baddie from the
north appears with several men. He asks for the location of the Kung Fu schools
and challenges every teacher on the block. It is not long before he hears
about Ip and sets out to finds him.

I just finished watching the penultimate and season finale of the new Dr. Who.
The Pandorica Opens is one of my favorite Dr. Who episodes ever - I love the
way it and the succeeding episode tie up most of the easter eggs scattered
since The Raggedy Doctor episode.

The League of Evil banning together to save humanity is good stuff!

And Alex Kingston is priceless as Dr. River Song. I have never been an Alex
Kingston fan, but this is a perfect melding of actress and role.

The Sophie Okonedo cameo as Liz Ten (Queen Elizabeth the Tenth, for you scoring
at home) is a welcome surprise.

It is a sincere sensation to see a sci-fi arc that was actually pre-planned,
well thought out and well executed (as opposed to how X-Files and Lost did
it - just to name two).

All this and a two-thousand year love story.

I loved it.

I'm more interested in River Song's adventures and I think she is stealing
the show from Matt Smith. I'm slightly hoping to do a spin off show for
River Song cause she is fun. She is going to eventually kill the Dr. but I
think they will give Matt Smith another season before they need to find a

I agree with everyone on this one.  Matt is still kind of lost 2 me (i think
it's the long face and the too much, too big hair).  River Song is simply
delicious!  Cannot wait on the ep where the Doctor finally knows her, knows
herand of course how she is going 2 kill him.  Must say, I
really miss David Tennant.  Wasn't really crazy about Christopher
Ecclestonhe was like Timothy Dalton's James Bond (not suave, but
rough)...Eccleston was not really smarty, but rough.  Tennant embraced the
'whiz kid' role perfectly.  Kind of like Tom Baker (the 4th doctor) did back in
my formative youth days.  As for companions, Amy Pond is soo much
better to me than that hideous Donna Noble (Catherine Tate).  Still say my
favorite companion is/was Martha Jones (Freeman Agyeman), but that's just my
opinion.

The last 6 esp. did get much better but overall not the best season of
DW. I'm more interested in River Song's adventures and I think she is stealing
the show from Matt Smith. I'm slightly hoping to do a spin off show for River
Song cause she is fun. She is going to eventually kill the Dr. but I think they
will give Matt Smith another season before they need to find a new Dr.

Re: [scifinoir2] Dr. Who finale

2010-08-08 Thread Keith Johnson
Was the original concept of the Doctor always intended to be this, that the
character would change so new actors could bring different aspects of his
personality to the fore? I ask because it's always a fascinating discussion to
see which Doctor we like--which says more about us than the Doctor. For
example, I still prefer Eccleston for the very reasons you mentioned: he was
tough (I'd say, rather than rough), world and war-weary, but trying to shake
off his ghosts. For some reason I really liked that. Tennant was great, but I
liked Eccleston's hard edge better.
And I like Donna more than Martha because Donna was tougher, giving as good as
the Doctor gave. Martha to me was way too much of a lovestruck puppy, and
seemed to have fallen for the Doctor too hard and too fast. Something about
that irritated me. I like that Donna would call his BS in a second. I am glad,
though, that at Tennant's death, they revealed that Martha married Mickey,
who had been too long cuckolded by on again/off again girlfriend Rose Tyler's
love for the Doctor.

Keith,

i did like the marriage aspect of Martha and Mickey.especially after Mickey
came back from the parallel Earth and was a little bit more gritty.  it was
time 4 him 2 grow up.

on a side note:
has anyone watched this show:  Rubicon?  it comes on 2nite, and b4 i record it

Was the original concept of the Doctor always intended to be this, that
the character would change so new actors could bring different aspects of his
personality to the fore?

It depends on how you look at it. Japan doesn't have PETA or the same

*We want to respect other cultures and their unique tastes in food and

wrong on a deeply moral level.*

*Think we're over reacting? Then you've never heard of:*

 *Yogurt-Flavored Pepsi*

 *Also Known As:*

 *Pepsi White*http://www.japanmarketingnews.com/2008/10/suntory-intros.html

*If you've ever gotten the urge to stir some yogurt into your Pepsi, well,
you're lucky to be alive because we're pretty sure that shit will make your
stomach explode. Or maybe just turn into a super-powerful acid that eats you
from the inside out (we aren't chemists). At best you'll wind up giving
everyone the impression that you've ejaculated into your Pepsi.*

*So who would think to combine those two things and sell them
commercially? Japan. Pepsi White emerged there last October just in time for
their line of winter products. Because nothing screams winter like yogurt.
Because it's white. Also, it's the first Pepsi beverage that might curdle on

extracted from celery seeds that has been around since the 18-freaking- 60s.
We'd imagine the ads featured guys cracking open a cold can and rubbing it

*Since then, Cel-Ray has became a common item in the city of New York, and

*Kimchi is a traditional Korean side dish composed mainly of fermented
spicy cabbage. The Kimchee Drink is the packaged, cloudy juice left from the
 fermentation process.*

*Now it's one thing to enjoy kimchi, which is probably an acquired taste
but, hey, lots of Koreans love it. But the shit that's left behind in the

[scifinoir2] STAR WARS CONQUERS THE SUBWAY

2010-08-08 Thread Mr. Worf
The creative team at Improv Everywhere came up with an idea of a unique and
crazy Star Wars costume show in New York Subway. They got a team together of
4 men and 1 woman and dressed them up as characters from the famous Star
Wars series. The woman is dressed as Princess Leia Organa, while one of the
men is dressed as Darth Vader. The other three are dressed as minions of
Darth Vader.

[image: Star Wars subway costumes

We see photographs of them entering the subway and dressing up for their
parts. Then we are shown Princess Leia, in her trademark ‘Cinnamon Bun’
hairstyle, riding the subway. Funnily, she is shown reading a book called
‘Galactic Rebellion for Dummies’. In the next few pictures, we see her
being captured by the minions of Darth Vader and then Darth Vader himself
makes an appearance. As seen in the pictures, there is no doubt that other
travelers on the Subway are deeply amused by this show.

Who was it (Martin?) that said you dance with the Doctor who brought you to the
party? Tenant was my favorite because I never watched DW regularly until I
joined this group last year and noticed all the buzz about show...taped all the
eps in the 2-day New Years marathon, so that's what I know. Martha was a
little love-struck, but is still my fav companion, and Donna would be 2nd

doesn't do much for me and neither does Amy Pond. Maybe I'll just be one of
those one-doctor Dr. Who fans, but I'll stick with it for now.

If you like River Song, Alex plays the character very similarly to her role in
Moll Flanders, which was on PBS, BBC or something in the mid 90's. It must be
the type of character she likes best, because I never really got into any of
her other roles.

Was the original concept of the Doctor always intended to be this, that the

to see which Doctor we like--which says more about us than the Doctor. For
example, I still prefer Eccleston for the very reasons you mentioned: he was
tough (I'd say, rather than rough), world and war-weary, but trying to
shake off his ghosts. For some reason I really liked that. Tennant was great,
but I liked Eccleston's hard edge better.
And I like Donna more than Martha because Donna was tougher, giving as good
as the Doctor gave. Martha to me was way too much of a lovestruck puppy, and
seemed to have fallen for the Doctor too hard and too fast. Something about
that irritated me. I like that Donna would call his BS in a second. I am
glad, though, that at Tennant's death, they revealed that Martha married
Mickey, who had been too long cuckolded by on again/off again girlfriend Rose
 Tyler's love for the Doctor.

 Anyone read any of these?

 Angela

 P.S. -- Here's Wikipedia's summary of Left Hand if anyone's curious:

The basic principle of The Left Hand of Darkness is one that started in
Ursula K. Le Guin's first novel in 1966 and runs through several of her early
works: that of the interplanetary expansion started by the first race of
humanity on the planet Hain and expanded across the universe, forming the
League of All Worlds, eventually expanding to the eighty-three world
collective called the Ekumen. This novel takes place in the year 4870 and
concerns an envoy, Genly Ai, who is on a planet called Winter (Gethen in
the language of its own people) to convince the citizens to join the Ekumen.
Winter is, as its name indicates, a planet that is always cold, and its
citizens are neither female nor male: they only have gender identities or
sexual urges once a month. These conditions have affected the ways that
civilizations on Winter have developed, with the most notable effect being
that there has never been a war on the planet. There are, however, arcane
rules of politics and diplomacy that the envoy must learn in order to
survive. His fortune changes quickly, according to what political faction is
in power at the time in the country he is residing in: in one country, for
instance, the Prime Minister arranges an audience with the king for him, but
the next day the Prime Minister is exiled for treason; in another he has
trouble determining which factions among the thirty-three Heads of Districts
support him and which want to use him to gain political power. The struggle
of Genly Ai as he tries to understand the ways of these people and survive on
this hostile planet gives Le Guin the chance to explore what life would be
like without the dualities, such as summer and winter or male and female,
that form our way of thinking: the book's title comes from a Gethen poem,
which begins, Light is The Left Hand of Darkness …

I'll just be one of those one-doctor Dr. Who fans, but I'll stick with it
 for now.

If you like River Song, Alex plays the character very similarly to her role
in Moll Flanders, which was on PBS, BBC or something in the mid 90's. It
must be the type of character she likes best, because I never really got
into any of her other roles.

Was the original concept of the Doctor always intended to be this, that
the character would change so new actors could bring different aspects of
his personality to the fore? I ask because it's always a fascinating
discussion to see which Doctor we like--which says more about us than the
Doctor. For example, I still prefer Eccleston for the very reasons you
mentioned: he was tough (I'd say, rather than rough), world and war-weary,
but trying to shake off his ghosts. For some reason I really liked that.
Tennant was great, but I liked Eccleston's hard edge better.
And I like Donna more than Martha because Donna was tougher, giving as
good as the Doctor gave. Martha to me was way too much of a lovestruck
puppy, and seemed to have fallen for the Doctor too hard and too fast.
Something about that irritated me. I like that Donna would call his BS in a
second. I am glad, though, that at Tennant's death, they revealed that
Martha married Mickey, who had been too long cuckolded by on again/off again
girlfriend Rose Tyler's love for the Doctor.

I agree with everyone on this one. Matt is still kind of lost 2 me (i
think it's the long face and the too much, too big hair). River Song is
simply delicious! Cannot wait on the ep where the Doctor finally knows her,
knows herand of course how she is going 2 kill him. Must
say, I really miss David Tennant. Wasn't really crazy about Christopher
Ecclestonhe was like Timothy Dalton's James Bond (not suave, but
rough)...Eccleston was not really smarty, but rough. Tennant embraced the
'whiz kid' role perfectly. Kind of like Tom Baker (the 4th doctor) did back
in my formative youth days. As for companions, Amy Pond is soo
much better to me than that hideous Donna Noble (Catherine Tate). Still say
my favorite companion is/was Martha Jones (Freeman Agyeman), but that's just
 my opinion.

The last 6 esp. did get much better but overall not the best season of
DW. I'm more interested in River Song's adventures and I think she is
stealing the show from Matt Smith. I'm slightly hoping to do a spin off show
for River Song cause she is fun. She is going to eventually kill the Dr. but
I think they will give Matt Smith another season before they need to find a
 new Dr.

Was excellent. Not a huge fan of the new doctor, but his Amy Pond is a
well thought out, very interesting character, and the finale was spectacular
