Basically she was a Folk Song collector to quote the first page of the first link below :

The English Folk Dance and Song Society was formed in 1932 by the merger of two organisations, the Folk Song Society and the English Folk Dance Society formed by Cecil Sharp in 1911.The Folk Song Society, founded in 1898, was the outcome of a number of individual folk song collectors and enthusiasts who wanted to share their experience and improve the quality of collecting and publishing.  No geographical limit was set to the Society's activities, and although the main interest were the folk songs of Britain and Ireland, the Journal of the Folk Song Society published articles from other countries as well. From 1904, the Folk Song Society became the focus of the new breed of folksong collectors, led by Cecil Sharp, including Ralph Vaughan Williams, George Butterworth, George Gardiner, Henry Hammond, Annie Gilchrist and Ella Leather, and the Journal published songs from this 'golden age' of folksong collecting.

I've finally completed my abc transcription (melody line only) of Robert
Petrie's "A Second Collection of Strathspey Reels &c.", 1795, which I'll
send to anyone on the list who wants it. This one has 70 tunes, a number of
which have never been reprinted. -Steve

I found that a search with Google's Advanced Search, using "Gilchrist"
in the ALL block and in the Exact Phrase Block "Journal of the Folk
Song Society", will elicit many items giving citations of Annie Geddes
Gilchrist articles in the Journal. Also, you might try putting in JFSS
or JFDSS(after they amalgamated with the Dance Society) .

I thought the most interesting was what she said about the First
Nowell, in this url:

Lots of wonderful reading.

Thanks Cynthia for reminding us of this wonderful person.

Re: [scots-l] Annie Gilchrist

2004-08-10 Thread Cynthia Cathcart
Thank you, Bev, for the links. I have done a websearch and while a couple
of your links look familiar, I'm going to look at them ALL to see if you
uncovered any jewels that I missed. Thank you for your time involved in
pulling together that list for me.

I am hopeful there is not a lot of repeated information, something that is
so frustrating on the internet. Plagiarism abounds. It seems that some
sites are nothing more than someone cutting and pasting from others. Lots
and lots of "hits" but all with the same meager sentence. And then there
are the websites that get included in your search but when you go there,
the word you searched isn't even on the page. I can't quite figure that one
out, but it's very frustrating. Does anyone else feel this way? Please tell
me I'm not alone. Maybe I need to find a search engine other than "google."

In part answer to Clif's question, I have found that some of old the
Journals of the various Folk and Dance Societies are available, but you
must be willing to dig. The Tolmie collection I wrote about earlier is
available from Llanerch Publishers. I bought it on Skye a few years ago
where I found it, of all places, on a news-stand. (An experience you'll not
have in the States.) Other times I have found I could get some journals via
inter-library loan, usually only to be viewed at your local library, not to
take home. You can often photocopy, or nowadays I take my husband's digital
camera and snap away. Alternatively, if you know the volume and page you
want, all you need to do is find a library that holds the journal and ask
for a copy of the page.

I'll admit I've not heard of University Microfilms, which Clif mentioned. I
guess we'll have to check them out.

I recently saw a product review for a wand type page scanner. It's
designed to be stand alone, and you can store a number of pages in it,
and then upload, via USB? to a computer for OCR or storage as a
graphic. It's called the DocuPen

http://www.docupen.com/

Sounds ideal for people who need to "snap" a copy of a page.

Hand-held scanners are usually not very good. If you
are considering getting one, test it first. See:

non-commercial information.

2004-08-10 Thread Cynthia Cathcart
At 12:16 PM 8/10/04, you wrote:

I don't know anything about hand-held scanners. I use a digital camera I
bought for Eric this Christmas past. If I get the right desk in the library
(you need lots of light) I can just take a photograph.

I got the idea from a librarian at the Library of Congress. He told of a
publisher who was coming into the collection to photograph the entire
original publications of Beethoven's String Quartets (as I recall) with the
idea of eventually making them available again for purchase. Eric's camera
certainly isn't as nice as this publisher's...I just take snap-shots and
then load them onto my laptop and take it home. Saves on hand-writing notes
for one, and also cuts down on the expense at the photocopier.

I also feel much better, with these delicate old books, to just take a
photo as I gently hold the book open, rather than forcing the book to lie
flat on a photocopier screen. One book I was working with, the librarian in
charge made it clear that it was *not* to be subjected to abuse at the
photocopy machine, so I feel lucky that the camera worked. (She even held
the book for me, it was that brittle). But you're right, Clif, this isn't a
high-quality image. Just enough so I can read the text and make out the music.

BTW, in case anyone is wondering, I don't photocopy from in-print books, (I
far prefer to purchase those to add to my collection!) If the book is out
of print and unavailable, but still under copyright, I restrict how much
copying I do to just a page or two for research purposes. If more is
needed, I have found that merely asking permission often works. One time
Warner Brothers gave me permission to copy an entire music book that has
been out of print since 1973 for no fee at all. I had to sign a permission
letter and print a copyright notice on each page of the copy, plus the
copies are only for my personal use, but that's all I needed.

No Dan, this is a different one altogether. I think the June message
referred to the 1st collection, probably the version that includes the bass
line. Petrie published 4 tunebooks in all; I'm slowly working my way

I think I've responded to everyone who has asked for a copy so far; if
