Re: [Server-devel] Testing EduBlog

2008-08-13 Thread Tarun Pondicherry
Hi Pablo,

I tried to address most of these concerns in the updated version.
Please let me know if I got the attempted fixes right.

I'm also thinking about how to configure the language. Currently, it
detects if the Browser is es or en and bases its setting on that. We
could also change it to force es not matter what. Which do you think is
better?

Another concern I have is that if testers login at the same time with
the same username, it may break things. Is this something to worry
about, or will the system be tested by one person at a time?

Thanks,
Tarun

I'll try to take some time this afternoon to test the system. What I found
with the previous version is that BrowseNew didn't change its homepage. I
talked with Greg that it would be very simplifying for teachers and children
to make BrowseNew go straight to http://wiki.laptop.org/go/EduBlog, a page I
will get some time to finish with the instructions to start to work. Would
it be possible to change this?

For us, both possibilities are good if they work well ;-)

Well, this may be a real problem working in a real school. The normal
workflow is that the teacher proposes something to work in and blog about
it, then children start to work altogether what problems may happen?

Re: [Server-devel] Testing EduBlog

2008-08-13 Thread Tarun Pondicherry
Hi Pablo,

The version downloadable from:
http://wiki.laptop.org/go/EduBlog_Instructions under the heading "For
Those with Build 656" has the new homepage. Please let me know if it works.

About, the lang settings, when you go to any of the pages it should be
spanish (assuming your xo is using the spanish localization). If that
does not work, then I will force the setting to spanish and not try to
detect the localization.

About multiple users, I was thinking that in a real school each teachers
and students have their own account. Then, they can do concurrent
things without issues. My concern is that for the test it looks like we
are going to use the same user account for everyone which can cause
problems. If we can create separate user accounts for all the teachers
and students testing, that would be ideal.

Thanks for taking the time to test this stuff out.

[Server-devel] Fwd: XS inconvenientes

2008-08-13 Thread Henry Vélez
Como vamos pues.

Estoy utilizando un Ap Zoom, conectado vía adaptador de red al
servidor, el cual es visto por las XO, pero no obtengo respuesta sel
server. Es decir, cuando busco la
 URL:http://schoolserver.orth.org:5280/admin/ o a
 http://172.18.0.1:5280/admin/, no obtengo respuesta.

Seguí las recomendaciones que se dan en
 http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Troubleshooting_School_Servers y no obtuve

 Muchas gracias.

 Se cuidan.

Caution, strong encryption is not legal in all the world.
Better to just use signed RPMs and perhaps hand verifiable checksums.

Key point: RPMs can be re-signed.

Some of the most in need parts of the world are places where "trust"
is most fragile. I suspect that digital signatures and checksums can
be used to keep all the OLPC processes as reliable, open and
transparent as possible. Encryption implies a deep lack of trust to
me. Signed files permits trust and also verification. Also the
ability to "extract and verify without a secret" the content of any
package might be important in a troubled region.

Summary: RPMs can be re-signed this permits local organizations to
pickup, verify, test and if their policy desires re-sign the packages
for local, regional use.

Fragment from the man page:

"Signatures:

rpm {-K | --checksig} [signature-options] PACKAGE_FILE...

rpm {--addsign | --resign} PACKAGE_FILE... "

So "signed by the NOC, and not changed" is possible to do. The
regional NOC may need to manage the secret half of their keys and
distribute the public half of their but that is less of a problem and
more trusting and open than full encryption.

Re: [Server-devel] Testing EduBlog

2008-08-13 Thread Pablo Flores
Hi Tarun.

I'm afraid some things in EduBlog are not working as they should when
working in an XO.

I downloaded the last BrowseNew, which has the new homepage, that is ok.
When I go to the "Create new blog" link (
http://edublog.venango.org/test/EduBlog/moodle/course/modedit.php?add=oublog&type=&course=3§ion=0&return=0),
it takes me to the moodle login in spanish, so far so good.

Then if I try to login with the user teacher, it takes me to an error
message that says: "This course doesn't exist", and a "Continue" button.
When I press it, it goes back to the home page. The same happens if I login
with the user teacheres. If then I go again to the "Create new blog" link, I
can see the courses page, but it's not possible to create a new course,
there is no link or option for this.

Another problem I found trying to create a new user: I could fill in the
registration form, but it never sends me the confirmation email, so I can't
finish the process.

Other strange behaviour in the XO, is that the "logout" option never appears
in the top-right of the page.

I'll try to go on testing, but so far the administration is not working from
the XO...

Pablo Flores

Also in practical terms, it's fairly hard to create encrypted
partitions (on other platforms for example), and RPMs also have high
barriers of entry.

So I'm looking for something simple, and as portable as possible.

Hi Pablo,

The list of blogs shows up here:

My idea is that the teacher or student will start on that page, and then
click on the blog they want to post to or manage. Do you think that
will work?

I'm afraid I can't reproduce this problem. Could you please try again
and take a screen shot of the error page (Alt 1 on the XO)?

You would need to be approved by the admin. I have done that. Let me
know if you have any more difficulty logging in.

Greg told me to remove all the "Moodle" options. They will show up if
you click "Show" at the bottom left of the page. Should I show
login/logout by default?

Also, the interface for "Create New Blog" will now let you enter your
own connection details to connect to your own Blogger blog.

Thanks,

Hi Pablo,

I realized that the links on the homepage were pointing to the old
pages. I updates the links at wiki.laptop.org/go/EduBlog. Please let
me know if that resolves the first issue you mentioned.

Thanks,

ejabberdctl status tambien me da el mensaje RCP failed on the node

http://192.168.0.160:5280/admin (mi server).

Que dice service ejabberd status?

[Server-devel] xs-tools package - grabbag of utilities

2008-08-13 Thread Martin Langhoff
We are starting to grow a number of useful utilities so now we have

   http://wiki.laptop.org/go/XS-tools

If you have an XS, try it out with

  yum --enablerepo olpc-testing install xs-tools

All it has right now is xs-sum, a wrapper around sha1sum, used for the
xs-rsync install-from-usb-look-ma-no-hands trick.

cheers,

and now you can get a functional auto-installation of XO images if you do

   yum --enablerepo olpc-testing install xs-rsync

Done a clean XS install off 165, and about to update it. But I
reviewed /etc and /var/named (which I know breaks) and I already have
a diagnosis.

First xs-config gets installed, and replaces files in /etc and
/var/named with symlinks. Second, the sysadmin runs domain_config, and
some of the scripts in domain_config run sed over symlinks in /etc
instead of doing it dorectly against the _target_ in
/fsroot.olpc.bla/. It's well known that sed -i (and perl -i, and
anything that does the same job) breaks symlinks.

Hmmm Hmm.

So the damage is done not at upgrade time, but at domain_config time.
So there's no easy/sane way I can fix it for already installed
machines. Anyone who installed an XS will need to apply some manual
steps to get the machine in a sane state after the next update.

Working with a solution now - but I had hoped for a "quick fix" I
could apply to ease the pain. No such. So I'm prob going to use the
sysconfig trick to divert to a different config file, and update the
domain_config machinery a bit to use templates.

No easy path unfortunately :-/

cheers,
