Let me tell you a story so to say, I was working on a brand X and purchased a Fel-Pro head gasket set. I installed the part and gaskets. The vehicle ran for 3 days before it started puking oil and Anti on the ground. Tore it back down to find a terrible sight. The intake gasket had failed and filled the motor full on antifreeze, and ruined the motor. The worst part is that it was a friends vehicle, and he is not mechanically inclined. I compared the factory gasket to the Fel-Pro one and they were really different. The factory gasket had built in intake end seals the Fel-Pro did not and they expected a 3/8 of an inch bead the seal the ends on the intake manifold. When I called them on it they said the gasket had to be installed wrong, because their gaskets were as good as the factory gaskets. The moral to the story is I will never buy Fel-Pro gaskets again, The best gaskets are the factory gakets. ---REMOVE-FOOTER-WHEN-REPLYING Questions? SD> Turbo-Dodge wanted
Hey all, I'm looking for a replacement for my '87 Shelby Z.I killed a piston recently and have decided to turn this car into a project.I have a diesel dually thats a pain in the butt to use as a daily driver because of its size,so naturally,I've decided to look for something just to buzz around in thats easy to park and more fun to drive.I'll consider any L-body,any '88 and later Daytona, any '89 and later LeBaron (2 door only) or any '88 and later Shadow. The car must be in driveable condition, must be able to pass emissions, must be Turbo, must be a 5 speed and have very little if any rust.I'll consider automatics as a last resort. I have cash but I also have a sizeable stockpile of L-body and G-body parts as well as trannies, motors, intercoolers, turbos, harnesses, etc for trade if interested. I live in Southern Ontario and will travel up to 2 hours from Hamilton Ontario for a decent car.Thanks. Frank ---REMOVE-FOOTER-WHEN-REPLYING Questions? SD> Hurst shifter for L body
Guys, Does any one know where I can find a hurst stick for an L body? I read in a Dodge Performance book for the 2.2 engines that there was such a shifter (P4120970). There was a Mopar Performance Shift linkage kit (P4349051) too. These are very old parts - would anyone know if somebody might still have these collecting dust on shelves somewhere? Also, would JUST a stick to a 79-80 Omni fit on a 86 Omni? Mike D'Antonio - 86 Omni GLH, 91 Spirit RT ---REMOVE-FOOTER-WHEN-REPLYING Questions? Re: SD>Another boring question
I just used a fel-pro gasket on my van. It appears different then the previous fel-pro gaskets I have seen. This new style has a gasket type material on top and a metal material on the bottom, Not like the previous silver gaskets I have seen in the past from fel-pro. I used it because I could get it the day I needed it instead of waiting 2 days for the dealer. Best bang for the buck should be a Mopar Performance gasket. They are about $20-$30 and many people are pushing over 20psi with no trouble. When I went to visit my engine builder, he had already fitted a cometic gasket, so I thought "sure why not". But it did cost something like $60. RE: SD>Another boring question
Aftermarket manufacturers are going to stop making 2, 3 or 4 gaskets for the same engine once the engine is out of production for some period of time (unless it is some specialty engine/head). The last Fel-Pro gasket I saw (a couple months ago), looked very similar to the Mopar Performance gasket I put on my car, if not exactly the same. Same thickness, same amount of metal around the cylinders, etc. I would not doubt that a 2005 Fel-Pro gasket would be fine, but, I know, for $20 ... why not get the MP one? Copper is not going to seal as well if the engine is not fully warm ... that is probably not a good daily driver gasket, plan on having a bottle of coolant handy. Of course the best bet is O-ring. ... and on that topic, is there a device that will O-ring a block without removing it from the car?? Has anybody tried that?? Re: SD> T2 Conversion Question
In a message dated 2/3/2005 7:28:03 PM Pacific Standard Time, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: My problem is seeing the justification in buying a 3" swingvalve. You then have to get a 3" downpipe. TU sells them for $300! $300 for a chunk of cast iron and a steel pipe? I can buy an entire T2 car that has a 2.5" swingvalve and downpipe for a little more than that, and have all kinds of spare parts. Course, I dont have the room to store it, but you know what I mean. How much HP is actually gained with a 3" piece? Do you lose any lag with it? Plus, then you probably should spend the money to port your intake and exhaust, and install biger housing on your turbo, and on and on and on. Im not trying to rain on anyone parade, but where does it end? Yeah, you could gain maybe 30 mph in the 1/4 mile, but since when in drag racing did the speed count. Its all about consistancy. My father in law has a 55 Chevy chop top drag car that will do 138 in the 8th mile. Problem is, he has too much power and cant keep the car consistent. He has sank a ton in that car, but cant win for anything. I will get off my soapbox now, but what do you guys think? Im guessin you've never gone any larger than a 2.5 crimp bent exhaust? ;) your boost responce/lag spool up times drop pretty drastically and theres no mistaken the power difference.. sometimes just an exhaust upgrade yeilds you 1 - 2 psi more due to the lack of after turbo back pressure..After the turbo, thats all useless backpressure anyways.. Now if you mod the turbo and roll with a larger exhaust housing (SV), there is much more potential.. the quicker you get the exhaust out of the turbo, the fasster the spool, the more efficient it becomes for making power and thus drops your ET's You cant really compair a 55 chevy to a turbo car.. You could realistically gain a modest 30hp by ditchin the stock 2.25sv/stock exhaust and runnin a 3" SV/full 3" exhaust setup..You mite get that HP gain on that 55 chevy, but thats more than twice the size of the engine.. :) On the mistu powered 2.5's that turbo spools up quick enough as it is.. just has no top end pull in my experiences.. Its amazing what the large gains are when proper additions on a turbo car are made. Where as on a civicyour lucky to get a wopping total of about 15-20hp with more mods than were talkin about here.. examplea cold air intake, header and full exhaust.. and at those prices (header usually about 150-250+) (cold air Intake around 150-200), (full exhaust 400 - 650+) ya arent gettin much for your money in the way of performance.. your just pushin around your power/tork curves a bit on those.. :) heres my challenge for you.. disconnect your exhaust from the turbos swingvalve or about 2 feet after the turbo and take a few runs around the block.. tell me if you feel a difference.. trust me, Ill make a believer out of you yet..;) then with the 3" SV setup its just that much more pull and power... Ya cant go wrong on this mod.. so 300 bucks for the swingvalve and downpipe 65 for a cat, 200 for 3" mandrel bent exhaust.. Muffler optional at about 45 bucks (Naaahh) plus a bit of shipping.. about 600 bucks.. considering the performance you get out of it vs what the new cars that arent turbocharged.. night and day brother!
