Re: SD> 89 Dakota wheel

2005-06-20 Thread Barry Goodall
I saw (and held) one that Tim Costello had done by American Stitches
in Mesquite Texas. It was superb!!The leather was tight, but soft
to the touch. It felt so good to the touch, I didn't want to put
it down. If I had a steering wheel like that in my car, I would want
to go on long trips just so I could steer. The wheel he had done was
one of the wood grain wheels, so the leather was only on the sides of
the rim, but did extend to the rubber part of the center spokes. The
stitches were top quality, the fit was perfect. They will cover
entire wheels also.

Re: SD> Alternator conversion

2005-06-20 Thread Barry Goodall
I don't recall that article, so it must have been before my time. I
don't know whether you are talking about converting to the Nippendenso
alternator though. That is what I did on my 86 GLHT and the only
other thing needed (besides the alternator) was the lower mount and
adjuster from an 88 & up car. I had to trim some of the plastic
insulator on the big lead as it couldn't be bolted on as it was (what
needs to be trimmed off is very apparent).

To select the alternator to use, I just went to a discount auto parts
store and bought one off the shelf. I did my first pass of selection
in the book to get the model numbers used on the later cars, and then
I started opening boxes till I found one with the same number of
grooves in the belt pulley. It was easy.

When I was shipping Shadow bumper covers I discovered large bulky objects
can be a challenge to ship affordably. First off use Fed Ex and go directly
to their main location if at all possible. They're going to measure it via a
limit of a certain amount of cubic inches (side x width x height, etc).

You'll have no room to spare on these so boxing them up is not an option.
What you do to keep the size to a minimum is to cover them in bubble wrap
from end to end. You can buy a roll of the small bubble stuff at Office
Depot along with the clear packaging tape. You may have to ship the sides &
front separate to meet the size criteria. Also if you go during a busy day
(with lots of people in line) they're less likely to notice (or care) if
it's slightly oversize.

Keep in mind that GLH parts are extremely flexible and relatively light
weight, so I think that you shouldn't nee much for shipping materials
except a simple box and some bubble wrap.

Greyhound has a decent freight service. UPS, FedEx, USPS and DHL all
have size and weight limits.

2005-06-20 Thread Eric .
I see that my reply only went to howard, so I'll post up my experience
here for all to read:
Ship Greyhound! Once something goes over 60" FedEx basically doubles
or triples the charge. Plug in a 59" long package, a 60" long package
and a 61" long package in their rate calculator, you'll see! I just
shiped a rear bumper (62x14x28) from FL to CA on Greyhound for $32!

I also recently shipped a header panel and lower valance from a
Thunderbird Turbo Coupr for $38 from FL to DC, FedEx wanted $210,
because f it's size. Greyhound allows up to 84" one direction, ad
100lbs per delivery. I've shipped a complete interior via Greyhound
for VERY cheap.

I shipped a GLH front airdam from Connecticut to the
midwest via UPS.
It cost $96.00 United Parcel Service.
I constructed my own cardboard box with $10 worth of
clear package tape.
The sideskirts were much cheaper to ship.

Re: SD> 89 Dakota wheel

2005-06-20 Thread David Salamone
I did alot of research on another leather wheel restoration company that had
an extensive resume of experience and was lower priced. To check out the
quality of their work (because I was interested in using them as a vendor) I
had them first do a 3 spoke Shelby Dakota wheel.

The craftsmanship seemed decent but they used the wrong grain of leather. I
was also interested in having them redo the 1987-88 four spoke wheels (that
were not originally covered in leather) so I sent one out.

What I finally got back after way too many "we'll get it right out's" what
finally arrived was a joke. They didn't put the seams where I requested and
glued on leather patches around the spokes instead of wrapping it. I had
them redo it but it still was still substandard when I finally got it back.

There are few companies that are skilled enough to properly recover a
steering wheel so I'd say American Stitches is the way to go.

SD> Thanks, and 86 GLHT paint completed in flat black epoxy

2005-06-20 Thread Clay Cooke
First off, thanks to everyone who replied to my email about removing the
door handles, and bumper brackets. I did get them removed and do appreciate
the help (and yes Andy, I probalby do need a FSM for this car ;) )

SO, I did get my 86 GLHT painted this weekend, with a nice flat black epoxy,
PPG DP40 Black Epoxy Primer to be exact. This is a very durable paint, UV
resistant, and IMO has a very nice look on the car. It wont fade in the sun
light like many "normal" primers will, and it is considered the ultimate
primer/sealer for lots of body shops.

Paint prep is the same as for any other paint. We may have gone a bit
overboard in that we removed everything from the cars exterior except the
tail lights, head lights, and fog lights. The car was wet sanded all over
with 400, then taped off, washed, wiped down, tacked clothed, and then shot.
It turned out great for any paint, and super-dee-duper for primer ;).

and yes, this is the FINAL coat/color. Other than some minor body work, this
is how the car will be. No fancy-schmancy clean coats or base coats for me.

Here are some before and after pictures:

Before:

http://www.joink.com/homes/users/cooke/86GLH/86GLHT-paint-before-6.jpg

After:

http://www.joink.com/homes/users/cooke/86GLH/86GLHT-paint-after-4.jpg

I think it turned out pretty good. Ive painted a few cars in the past, so I
have a fairly good handle of whats going on, and a good paint gun. :) I
managed to cover the entire car and hood with 1 quart of paint (2 quarts
mixed paint). Its still not cheap, but much better than rattle can and it
will last. One thing I cant decide is whether I want to put the OEM style
red decals/stripes on the car, or put everything "back in black", so the
entire car, decals, and everything is black.

I could make the decals in a custom color combo such as flat black for the
inner portion (normally red) of the lettering and gloss black for the outer
portion. It would have a subtle phantom look to them.

2005-06-20 Thread Mike Fisher
I am looking for a good used or a new valve body seperator/spacer for an
85 a413 tranny. If you have one or know where to get one, please let me
know. The only was to get a new one from Mopar is to buy the entire
valve body for $460. Too much for me. Thanks.
