SD> boost gauge

2004-08-14 Thread Colwell82
Has anyone modded a Shelby boost gauge out of a CSX into a daytona? I looked
and the connecting "flanges" are a little different, not to mention some of
the plastic would need to be cut away. I know a lot of people on the list will
get mad about using the numbered car parts for a car they made thousands of,
but it's a little subtle change that I'd like to try.

SD> Power Steering Pump ?s

2004-09-08 Thread Colwell82
alrighty my fine Turbo-Dodge buddies. Tonight I almost wrapped up my 86 T-Top but
theres 2 things holding me up. One is frozen brake calipers, no problem I got that
covered. The second is my power steering pulley isn't lining up with the crank. Is
there any adjustment to the pulley itself? It's lining up with my alt. and water pump
belt, not where it's supposed to a 1/4 inch away. Anyone have any ideas? It's got the
2.2 liter, T-1 pretty much stock... there was a belt on before, but it was cut off,
and nothing else changed. I just don't get it!

SD> Power Steering Pump ?'s UPDATE

2004-09-10 Thread Colwell82
Well I looked at the car last night... the mounting bracket is bolted to the block
nice and tight, and it's still way off. I got a belt on it,was straight on contact but
twisted between the pulleys and when I started the car, is came right off. I'm going
to try and put a different pump and bracket tomorrow and see if that helps since I
have a few of them around. Any other Ideas?

SD> ok big new problem

2004-09-11 Thread Colwell82
i got my power steering problem fixed (i was looking at the wrong groove on
the crank pulley, and I call myself a weekend mechanic sheese!) I need to
figure out what year automatic transmission I have. theres an ID plate on top that
has a build date reading
"046 93". Will 87 5 speed Axles fit? I have a shadow that nothing is going on
with and could definatly use the axles out of it, or will I need to get a
different set? I got my 86 shafts in, thought they might fit (since lots of
people get newer stuff put in these cars as they break) but they don't spin when in
gear. I knew about people's axels poping out when they put the wrong shafts
in but I thought they would at least touch and spin. This is all thats keeping
me from getting my car on the road again! any help on axle shaft input
changes would help tremendously!

SD> starting?

2004-10-10 Thread Colwell82
I went to start my project crusing car today, and all i get is a click. I
know its not the starter, it's tested fine... the starter relay has a fuseable
link broke on it, but looks like its been broke a while. where does this go?
Could this be imy problem? if your looking at the car head on, it's the left most
box on the drivers side shock tower, the link is the first spot on the "U"
connector on the left... it seems to go directly into the wiring harness but I
can't find the other end. I checked my other daytona and it seems to go back
along the firewall, but has already been disconnected in that car. My 87 shadow
doesn't have this line. what is it? Please help!

well last night I replaced the starter in my 86 Daytona T-Top Turbo Z, got it on the

drive ratio, and the other is a 520 with a 3.50 final drive ratio. I'm just
reading off the tags that are on them, I'll try to get pics tonight. One I
bought for my Daytona from a scrap yard down the road from my house before I
swapped an auto in it and the other came out of my parts Shadow ES. Both should
work fine but no promises, located in Ann Arbor Michigan. Local pickup, or I'd

Re: SD> Florida law

2005-05-11 Thread colwell82
One of the first things I noticed was that this list is REALLY into drag
racing, and for me, it's not about racing at all... I like the looks of these
cars, and I like to just drive with them. I may take it to the track when I
feel the car is running perfect and is able to do the best it can do. Sure I've
been known to showboat with friends from time to time, but my fiance' has put
her foot down on that. What worries me about this law is, what happens when
you're driving in a 45 mph zone, and someone pulls out in front of you and does
20 mph? (it happens to you too doesn't it?) You pull around the person to pass,
when it's safe to do so, and the police see it as your racing the person and
pull you over. I'm not so sure I like that idea at all. Maybe if they worded it
so the police can't just pull you over for passing and driving an older car and
being a bit on the younger side, I could put myself behind this more.

just my opinion, and everyone's entitled to their own!

I couldn't agree more! Of course, part of the problem I see as well, is
something that has been discussed earlier in this thread, and that's the
reduction in the number of tracks. The owners of the Nashville Superspeedway
were "supposed" to be building a new 1/4 mile track at the speedway, and never
have. But at least I still have 3 1/8th mile tracks within 2 hours.
I know it may seem like it's more fun to race on the street for some reason,
but there's really no reason to do it in my book. If you can't control
yourself, you probably shouldn't be driving a fast car. Keep it safe, and keep
it legal.

SD> what are these parts for?

2005-05-18 Thread Colwell82
I cleaned out the trunk of my 87 shadow and found 2 hoses in sealed mopar
plastic bags. they also came with a pretty greasy dealership note that is
missing, as luck would have it, the part descriptions, but the date is 1998 so
they
aren't too old...
the part "numbers" and "name" on the bags are:

04343916 Hose

04504024 Connector

the "Connector" looks like a 4-to-1 hard plastic vaccum line or something,
the "Hose" is bigger, soft rubber and looks. odd to say the least. Does
anyone have any ideas?

well gang I got some quality time with my 86 turbo Z this evening, and a
little bit better look at my transmission "knock" sounds. Of course I haven't
checked the flywheel bolts yet, I ran out of daylight, but the top shield
between
the engine and trans looks a little beat up, but it's beat out away from the
flywheel. Another thought I had while crawling around taking the trans bolts
out, was is there a difference in flywheel teeth? I guess what I'm getting at
is
maybe it's the wrong starter for this car? I don't even know if that's
possible but it's worth a long shot. Hopefully Saturday I'll get enough time to
check the flywheel bolts now that the temp is staying down a little.

back in 98 when I got my first 86 turbo Z which had been in a field for 2
years before I got it, it was infested. I stripped the interior and it still
smelled, even with the interior out. the mice had gotten behind the dash and
into the air vents. I pulled the instrument cluster out last summer to check
another 86 turbo Z's to see if it worked and found more nests in there, so be
ready to take everything apart.

I pulled a Shelby Charger from a field that had mice in it. I steam
cleaned, simple green'd, you name it, but there was still that
"smell" especially on hot days. yuck.
So one afternoon I went nuts and dismantled the interior and found
a few little nests behind the plastic trim which were the root
cause. Once those were gone it was fine, but the moral of the story
is, be prepared for a THOROUGH cleaning!!
The fun part about those mice was the nest with a dead one getting
shot out the tailpipe after firing the car up after being dormant
for two years... LOL

Re: SD> some stuff i am selling on ebay

2006-06-12 Thread colwell82
I gladly agree, Matt is a great guy to work with. I lost a money order for him
in my parents house fire, and he was nice enough to wait for me to get another
to pay for an item. He is excellent to deal with and I wouldn't think twice
about anything from him. I'll have to check and see if he has anything I need
or want.

I've bought parts from Matt in the past. I have no
hesitation with buying anything else from him. He's
an honest seller and everything is as described. I'll
probably be buying from him again.

SD> 86 White Turbo Z spotted in Jackson MI

2006-08-12 Thread Colwell82
I just got back from the store picking up burger buns, and was behind a white
86 Turbo Z in vandercook lake Michigan (just outside Jackson), just wondering
if it was anyone on the list? I tried to catch up to him, but he turned onto
the 127/M50 entrance to the highway before the cars in front of me started
moving.

Re: SD> Rack & Pinnion replacement Question

2006-12-03 Thread Colwell82
Matt,
I had a similar problem with my 86 turbo Z. I thought the rack was held to
the column with a bolt or clip too, but it wasn't. What I did was position a
couple jackstands just below the K-Frame and tapped a little bit on the contol
arms with a hammer and it just wiggled out. When I knocked it loose, it fell
just a little bit onto the jackstands instead of all the way to the ground. I
saw Bob's post on bungee cording the new rack up there and I wish I had seen
that when I did mine! I ended up removing the column from inside the car and
lining it up that way, which was a bit PITA but it got it done.

Re: SD> Automatic to Manual swap or NOT!

2007-05-01 Thread colwell82
I'm the guy that always pops in to say "Don't forget the trans mounts are
different!" because I swapped everything over, talked with people on the list
who had done the swap, and talked me through everything, only to have the
transmission mount to the body not to line up correctly. Luckily I didn't get
rid of my parts car, I walked out to it at 11:30 at night with a flashlight,
and saw they were set up differently.

Subject: Re: SD> Automatic to Manual swap or NOT!

I'm about to do the same on my 87 Sundance. Mostly because I just detest the
3-speed so much (not to say it can't be made better it just doesn't fit my
driving style or how the car has been configured) So I've got a flywheel ready
to go and I'm hoping to pick up an OBX diferential soon to go into the 520/555
hybrid that I'm thinking of building.

Anyway, the consoles are the same between auto/manual, the auto gate just
screws
or snaps into place. So just pop it out and put in a factory boot from another
Daytona/Lebaron or a boot of your choice. Make sure you fool the neutral
safety
switch or the car won't start after the swap. If you can't find a boot
locally,
let me know and I'll check my parts stash.

The shifter bases and cables are vehicle specific, so you'll get to hunt down
those parts for your Daytona. I might have one for the older transaxles, not
the newer ones.

Another issue you'll have to watch for is the K-frame mount for the extra
transaxle mount the 5-speed cars used. Not hard to add with a welder or you
can
swap K-members with a 5-speed car (you'll need to canabalize one to get the
pedal assembly, clutch cbale brackets, etc.

If you need to replace the suspension bushings or you want to upgrade to the
newer style K-member and control arms (I would recommend this for the older
cars, just grab one from the same body style and match the uprights with the
K-member), 10 bolts and the K-frame is out and on the ground. I think
Polybushings.com sold a tab to weld onto the K-frames at one point.

5-speeds are all over the place but I suggest going for the newest one possible
(meaning the A-523/A568) as they have better shifters and tend be less abused.
Plus the 523/568 are essentially the same as the non-turbo neon transaxles so
their performance parts will fit (shifters, shifter bushings and differentials)

Just watch the final drive gearing and the clutch spline count as 1991 was a
change over year on the input splines. The Spirit R/T clutch set seems to be
the hot setup for many people with warmed up street cars. For more serious
people, there are ceramic clutches, etc.

Ideally you'd find a 91 or 92 5-speed turbo Daytona to steal parts off of, that
way you can get the better brakes, suspension and 5-speed for your ride.

Good luck,

Now there's an Idea... I have a book on doing a V8 swap into the chevy S10, why
doesn't someone write up a book on?a T2 swap into all the cars? I think it was
a publishing company called JTR (Jags That Run) Maybe start with something
broad like the T2 swap, then work on other more specialized things like car
specifics?

FWIW, I was contacted for some information a while back by the author of
this supposedly upcoming book. All I know is that he introduced himself and
said he was writing it, but I hope it does come to some sort of fruition.

Even that would not necessarily be a bad thing. My dad self-published a
booklet about something fairly obscure he collects (old Mobil oil license
plate toppers), and it looks like he'll make his money back plus a little.
