Re: [silk] Your most memorable concerts?

2020-12-11 Thread Deepak Misra
I have not been to too many, but the one i went to:

Paco de Lucia sextet in Munich in 1993 was more than enough to make up for
it. It was a wish to see him again which could not be fulfilled on account
of him passing away.
If you have not heard the maestro , just watch
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k6Nw0Hm_wTM

Another one was Jean Luc Ponty on one of his concerts to Bangalore. The
ushers let us in before the concert started since we had come so early and
we watched the practicing for half an hour before the start. There was no
audience besides us.

I observe that there is a statistically significant proportion of
silklisters using Mac machines. Anything to read into ?
As in do smarter people use Macs ? Is it a style statement? Or do
Macs provide additional features which justify the premium.
While this topic might have been trashed to death in other forums, it would
be interesting to get perspectives from this statistically significant
crowd.

Re: [silk] Headspace and similar meditation "services"

2016-09-12 Thread Deepak Misra
I used Yoga Nidra for many years and sometimes got into such a deep level
of relaxation and meditative state that my children used to get scared when
they saw my face.

The Bihar School of Yoga has these CDs for sale and they are start from
Yoga NIdra INtemediate (about 20 minutes) to advanced (30 minutes).

Yoga Nidra is just the first stage of meditation and I have not been able
to cross this even 10 years after sporadic practice. The next 2 steps are
Ajapa Japa and Antar Mouna which requires one to sit with spine straight
for 1/2 hour - something that is the most stressful part of meditation.

I would strongly recommend these CDs for starting.

Re: [silk] Financial planning

2014-10-01 Thread Deepak Misra
Jumping into this a bit late, but will try to avoid repititions

1) Open a PPF account in every member in the houses name. This is an
absolute must and try to put as much as possible there. The high tax
free return with compounding at zero risk is something that is
difficult to match

2) The first house/real estate is not an investment. The subsequent
ones are. While the ROI in terms of rent maybe low, the caital
appreciation is what counts. As some earlier pointed out, the tax
breaks on loans makes effective interest low.

3) An approximate cash flow statement needs to be prepared to plan for
big ticket expenses. The savings/retirement strategy and allocation
depends a lot on this.

4) Assume that good fund managers know more than you and have much
better data. If you treat mutual funds as investing then this holds
true over investing directly in stocks. Many peeople do make money on
stocks but lots more do loose. In case you have the time, expertize
and drive, then it make sense to research stocks and buy directly.

5) Allocate an ideal percent of cash to debt, small cap, balanced and
large cap depending on risk profile and adjust investment accordingly.
Even if the amount per month is miniscule, it all adds up

6) Regular SIP is a must. That is the key

7) For equity keep long term in view. If Mukesh Ambani sneezes, the
stock market crashes, but that does not mean that all business are
going to sink. ONce he starts smiling the market may boom. Over a 10+
year horizon this hardly matters. Equity in INdia is too weighed by
sentiment over fundamentals and along term perpsective hedges you
against that.

ON a slightly unrelated note, I had asked about this site called
perfios a couple of years back. I upgraded from free to premium and am
very happy with the site. YOu might want to check our the free version
and see if it helps.

Are you asking about the efficacy of say GTD or a mailing list
dealing with GTD? GTD is an interesting concept but what I found is
that most mailing lists get bogged down in implementation and tweaks
and not about the philosophy. When i first read the book, I was quite
gung ho but the only notable success story that I have from my
experiment with GTD was to repair a vacuum cleaner that has been out
of action for a couple of years. Anyway there are some good concepts*
to be learnt and it is best not to get bogged down into reading about
it.
Life hacker is mildly interesting and once in a blue moon gives you
something you can actually use. The useful section is the one on
downloads, browser addons etc.

Deepak

* - Differentiate between a project and next action. (This is the most
useful learning in my opinion)
  - Take an immediate decision on what has to be done on something
which is in your in-box (Act, schedule, delete , file)
  - Ensure that every project has a next action

What is very strange is I dont have any recollection of how I found this

here. The volume of mails can be a bit overwhelming and I do quickly scan
through most mails and do give up after the 25th mail on a subject.

I have met very few people from this list face to face but have this long
plan of attending one of the meets.

My interests are P G Wodehouse , arm chair reading and TV viewing on
traveling, reading about (different than experiencing) wildlife.

Which makes more sense ? kindle or tab. If tab largely for browsing from
the armchair and reading books is there a lot of difference between the sub
Rs. 10K ones (Karbon, iball) and the grand daddies ? Any opinions>?

I might be the guilty one. I got sick of icici lombard sending me spam and
and had an autoforward that forwarded any mail from them back to their
customer support. But something went wierd today which I cant figure out. I
sent a citibank mail from my office address to my personal address and this
seemed to send a mail from icici. I was quite baffled but did not have the
time to figure it out. I doint know how Silk entered the picture.
Is it possible that I am not the guilty one ?? IN any case I have deleted

If you know the ISBN of the book http://isbn.net.in/ checks the prices

I personally found RD a very sophisticated version of a soviet magazine. I
think it was called Sputnick but maybe Sputnick was a clone of SPAN which
was published by USIS.
In any case, RD was a subtle propaganda for the American way of life. Yes
you are right that deterioration started soon.

What is interesting with the old issues is the advertisements from those

You dont need a visa for South Korea if you have travelled more than 10
times or more than 4 times in the last 2 years. The statement is a bit
puzzling since traveled > 10 times implies travel 11 times but the sentence
seems to be understood as you dont need a visa after the 10th trip (even
though semantically wrong). I assume visa free transit in Singapore is well
known to those having USA and Schengen Visas

The main grouse I have with getting as visa is the number of documents one
has to submit. South Korea largely gives single entry visas and with each
application one needs to submit company offer letter, original invitation
letter, 3 years bank statement, 3 years IT form 16 and 3 months payslips.

I also have the hoarder mentality and tried to keep everything. I have all
electricity, telephone, credit card bills from the last 10-15 years. I
finally scanned everything (even though I really did not need them) and
threw them out. We have now started with things in the loft (like the
thermos flask we got 10 years back, 2 geysers, ...) The books were
overflowing all over the place and I took the decision to get rid of
everything I had not read and was not planning to read in the next 6 months.
It was real tough at the begining It gives you a very good feeling once you
remove everything you dont need.

Hi Deepa

Nice to hear from you.

Nat Geos are going to stay for this and many future generations of Misras.
No way they are going to leave my house :-) There is a guarantee provided
by me, that you can ask for them whenever you want them back if you miss
them so much. People still dont believe my luck to get such a collection so
easily. I have not got around yet to making a dedicated bookshelf
exclusively for this collection, but I will get around to it one of these
days.

btw: I have a Cannon SLR EOS 1000F with a 35-50mm lens purchased in 1992 .
This was in the days when digital was not invented as yet and this took real
excellent photos. There is some small problem in the shutter assembly which
needs looking at and possibly fungus in the lens. If you are interested in
the old fashioned photography with old fashioned film, I would like to offer
it to you. Let me know if you think you could and would use it.

Are you in Bangalore right now ? I remember that you were on a long visit to
USA.

btw: i assume that you are aware of this group freecycleblr? This is a real
nice way to dispose of things you dont need though I suspect that it is not
fully used in India in the spirit for which ti was intended. You can check
out this group at yahoogroups if you have not heard of it.

Gobi Manchurian (along with Paneer, Potato, ) is something masquerading
as a Chineese dish. Manjuri is pure ethnic Bangalorean - no pretenses.
There is a subtle difference.

Last year I was in Vietnam and ducked into an awning when it started
raining. The awning turned out to be an Indian restaurant with the menu
displayed. I found Gobi Manchurian on the menu - one more data point that
Machurian is really an Indian dish

It is basically understanding what is a good conductor of "yechal" or
"Ointha" as we call it in Oriya.
Whatever is fixed is not while what is not fixed is. So plates clearly are
while kitchen counters are not. The fridge used to pose a challenge for my
othodox grandmother since Non veg food used to contaminate her food in the
fridge. The problem was solved by desiganting one shelf in the fridge as
pure ensuring that no meat, eggs or Ointha food ever touched that shelf.

A Table falls somewhere in no mans land since it is fixed but also movable.
. I had this near miss incident in a small village in Orissa when I are
some snacks and sweets and unconsciously almost put the "dirty" plate on
the cabinet where all the sweets were stored. The waiter shouted and I
stopped myself just in time.

Once the person files that the card is lost, the card should get blocked.
the Passenger accepts liability for charges till then.

To clarify: I understand the intent of the airlines, but I am questioning
the harassment to genuine passengers who have asked someone to book their
tickets as happens with me.

My point is that passengers do have proof of identity of the person
traveling and it should be possible to track anyone who has made a
fraudulent purchase. Another point is that I have paid for the ticket and
the charge has got debited to my credit card so i have become a paying
customer.

And finally; Whats so different about airlines compared to any other online
service. If at all, there is an actual proof of identity of the passenger
unlike other online transactions

That is the problem of having ambitious language. While the intent is clear

that one cannot approach a travel agent if their website is down.

>From the terms and conditions:

The Passenger must not:

   - use other means to transact or obtain information if you are unable to
use the Kingfisher Airlines online booking facility.

No Representation - Kingfisher Airlines does not warrant or represent that

[silk] Copy of Credit Card required at airlines checkin

2008-09-29 Thread Deepak Misra
Airlines are asking for copies of the credit card used for booking at the
time of checkin.

I book tickets for relatives and find it a pain to send them copies of my
card everytime I book a ticket for them.

In case the passenger does not have a copy of the credit card (s)he can be
denied passage and airlines seem to be taking this seriously.

I saw the fine print on Kingfishers website and saw presentation of credit
card copy as one of the terms and condition (along with a lot of other
interesting terms and conditions on what all the airlines is not liable for
and the powers they have).

This is to be to prevent fraud but any thoughts on the legality ?

I do have the same problem. I have a catchall address for my domain and use
different names to subscribe to different lists hoping to cut off spam. The
assumption is that I can simply delete the address when I detect it is
getting spam. I often find out who is spamming from the address. For
example if I have an account with bank Blah-blah I would use the address
[EMAIL PROTECTED] Now when I get spam mail addressed to blah-blah I
know the guilty culprit. My hit rate has been extremely low till date and I
have started depending more on gmail to detect spam

A side effect is that sometimes I forget what email I used and get lost if
this is needed for any reason (such as authentication or password forgotten)

Anyone have any hacks to achieve this (changing jobs is not an option :-) )

On Tuesday night at around 09:00 PM I was driving on Hosur road and turning
left towards St. Johns hospital road when I saw something bright moving on
the sky. This would have been in a southerly direction on the map. This
looked too small to be an aircraft and too big to be fireworks. Erased in
from my mind till this mail.
However the reports cited say Monday while this was Tuesday.

Spamassassin has been able to tag most of these messages as spam
successfully for me(I am using debain's default setup). For example,
here is X-Spam-Status from one such message
"
X-Spam-Status: Yes, score=24.406 tagged_above=-1000 required=3.5
tests=[BAYES_99=3.5, DNS_FROM_RFC_WHOIS=1.447, EXTRA_MPART_TYPE=
1.091,
HELO_DYNAMIC_DHCP=3.066, HELO_DYNAMIC_IPADDR=4.2,
HTML_IMAGE_ONLY_04=3.6, HTML_MESSAGE=0.001,
RCVD_IN_BL_SPAMCOP_NET=1.558, RCVD_IN_SORBS_DUL=2.046,
RCVD_IN_XBL=3.897]
"

A large number of small scores add up to give such messages a high score.

I am curious: Is it possible to use this technology in reverse and use
these filters to try and guess the author of a mail given a collection of
previous works by many people ??

Interestingly, I get a fair amount of this sort of spam where there is
*no* attached image, no embedded URLs, etc. I wonder about that.

That was my question too - I should have been more clear. When I see an

attachment, I know the poison is there but cant figure out the cases where
there is no attachment.
