Cherry tomatoes have clusters that fork 5 times with near 50 tomatoes on a single cluster. http://www.fugitt.com/chertom.htm If you look close, you can see the forks in the clusters. Wow, Wayne, what an inspiratonal website. Where there's a will, there's a way. Hydroponics require know-how, but using the right fertilizer could certainly provide enough trace elements. As for seaweed or kelp as a fertilizer, the idea is to get a full complement of trace minerals for the plants to utilize. I would think the plant when given a full range of trace minerals would selectively absorb what it needed to grow. Would any particular element like iodine be concentrated beyond normal levels? Re: CSWater filter?
If the problem is iron algae or bacteria you're talking thousands for complete whole house treatment. Some of my neighbors have the problem so bad the water is brown as mud..mine isn't that bad but has a distict flavor and stains everything eventually. Carbon filters work for a while and reduce conductivity of the water by about 2/3rds but the organisms grow in the filter and make the water smell like a swamp. A plain old Britta pitcher kept in the fridge has worked well.. It's too cold for the organisms to grow in the fridge. I shock the well with swimming pool chlorine twice a year. Chlorox works but is more slippery feeling. I dumped a gallon of CS in the well this fall and the water has been OK..but I forgot about that water going to the septic tank. If you take what the dogs [or any carnivour] leave and let it dry under cover in the open air, you get something very similar to Guano in a few months. Ode At 09:06 AM 2/12/2004 -0600, you wrote: I like your thinking here Wayne. I too grow some fantastic looking produce - in containers, in a very small space with only weekly additions of amendments. I do start out with a healthy soil mixture. I suspect that many do not want to spend the money or go to the trouble of starting with good soil. Compost, seaweed tea, bat guano, fish emulsion there are so many ways to add natural sources of nutrients. And well you gotta do a little reading, and weeding. Containers minimize the amount of soil, cut down on the weeds and allow me to keep my plants away from the deer without building an 8 ft fence, they won't come that close to the house because of the dogs. It is not inconceivable that there is a hidden agenda. I tend to agree with you. If it was as bad as everyone says, we would all be dead by now. I have lots of evidence to indicate my produce may in fact still have some valuable minerals contained therein. Typically, taste, texture, appearance and vigor of a plant tells you it is healthy. When an 80 year old farmer, who has grown tomatoes for 50 + years, tell me these are the best tomatoes I have eaten in my lifetime, I have to pay attention. He also said that about my watermelon and my corn this past year. My soil is not the worst, plus I am using a scientific blend or man chelated nutrients. The only mineral that cannot be chelated easily is boron. I have grown sweet corn ten feet tall. Normally this variety gets only 5, 6 or maybe 7 feet tall. Cherry tomatoes have clusters that fork 5 times with near 50 tomatoes on a single cluster. http://www.fugitt.com/chertom.htm If you look close, you can see the forks in the clusters. Full size tomatoes set the fruit clusters very close together, 3 to 4 inches, with 8 to 11 tomatoes per cluster. I had one situation with full sized clusters less than one inch apart. As the cluster reached maturity, you could not get the finger between these clusters. I grow cantaloupes so sweet and full of flavor, they actually pump white sugar out around the stems. The okra is so good I eat it raw. Squash has better flavor than any you find. Of course feeding liquid nutrients each hour makes soil obsolete. This is all with man chelated nutrients. My goal one day is to grow a tall tomato plant. Some have produced 37 feet of main stem in one years growth. Not many people know a tomato plant will live for several years. I am sure I can hit 60 to 70 feet if that is my goal. A small plot of corn http://www.fugitt.com/corn_2.htm This is a home built measuring device. http://www.fugitt.com/tipspon1.htm Made from a plastic spoon and 1 optical sensor, I was able to get 1/6th ounce resolution. An event counter kept track of the tips per time. I wrote the software to run this system. It does full data logging of all events and data. I was also logging EC of the leachate over 24 hours. You could see the EC change when temperatures were highest and sunlight the brightest. This is when the plants remove the most nutrients from the liquid nutrient solution. I grow plants in soil, pine bark, mixed media, and hay bales. I have not tried growing them in AIR yet, but that is possible also. Sorry I got off subject, not all this is about soil minerals. Some of the older log files exist here http://www.fugitt.com/wfipnow.htm Also some moon light data logging I got during an eclipse. This complete web page is the output of a program I wrote that embedded the data from my system into the web page and automatically sent it to my web site. Tons of fun, to say the least. Once people have received the guidance they need to explore these other topics on their own, *then* it's time to wind down the thread or move it to the OT list. I don't mind hearing about EFT on the main list, but detailed discussions belong on the other list. These conversations about the soil, organics, and mineral supplements are informative as all get-out, but they needed to be moved after the first day or so. If anybody wants to pick Wayne's brain about his hydroponics successes, that's a *great* use of the OT list. And if somebody wants to crow about a new grandchild or other personal item, I'm not going to grumble either, because it is having the chance to care about the *people* on this list that makes us a community instead of a bunch of unrelated individuals. It's like being at a party and realizing that everybody is *SHOUTING* in order to be heard. All it means is that it's time to turn the stereo down a bit and move the card game to the basement... *not* that everybody should go home! Re: CSPhosphorous / Also Silver Deficiency
This is one reason taking supplements is not without risk. You can unbalance and do more damage than you know. Phosphorous must be in a 1.2-2:1 ratio of Calcium : Phosphorous or you can produce metabolic bone disease. It is well known in horses and in herpetoculture enthusiasts that messing with the mineral balance in the diet should not be undertaken lightly, particulary when taking high doses over a long period of time. To keep this on topic, I just read that we used to get 130 mcg of Silver in our diets. Have also seen figures as high as 430 mcg. The author of the booklet on CS speculated that soil depletion has led to a Silver deficiency and perhaps is an explanation for the increase in infectious disease rates. Hi Mike, I personally think a link to the ot list at the bottom is a good idea. I have a hotmail account that wants me to sign in all over to get to the ot list...have to go to the passport page etc...with a link it would take me right there to post ot, and yet could come back to the reg list easily... also sometimes hotmail gets upset and wants me to sign out of the cs list before I go to the ot list... those of you, please don't tell me to drop hotmail...it is the account I have been using for years for this list, and it works for me. I have tried eudora web mail but it is pitifully slow to post... so, for those of us that would really benefit from the link...pleasee btw, can I borrow the keys friday night? My niece drank Diet Coke since her early teens(she's now 25) and recently fell injuring her vertebrae/spine, she had to have some surgery but it turns out when she had a bone scan done, she had the bones of a 65 year old woman pretty much due to drinking coke. Basically, the phosphorous leeches the calcium out of your bones. He also experimented - as he had earlier with his sheep using mineral licks - with supplements of alkaline minerals such as magnesium and potassium, which he believed would counteract the harmful effects of phosphorus and promote its excretion. Re: CSWater filter?
Evening Marjie, thinking of getting me some leeches and let them dine on my toes. You could consider making blood donations from time to time. I really hate to do it because I have spent so much effort and so much money over the years trying to make it high quality. Still, I never feel it at all when I do it. If the problem is iron algae or bacteria you're talking thousands for complete whole house treatment. Some of my neighbors have the problem so bad the water is brown as mud..mine isn't that bad but has a distict flavor and stains everything eventually. We has a similar situation at my hunting camp. A very deep well, 8 inch casing, and a 3 HP pump submerged in the well. The filter selected cost about $ 1500. It does a good job, with automatic back flushing, and chemical injectors. The water has no smell, no brown color and tastes half decent. I don't drink it but the others do. I carry my own water everywhere I go. I was surprised what a good job it does. I did not select the filter nor did I help with the installation due to other obligations at the time. Re: CSEvidence of mineral depletion
For years the longest lived person in my family was my great aunt, who ate simply, was raised on the tops of the Hiraethog mountains alongside the Conway Valley, North Wales, UK and lived to about 94. If she was ill, she would go to bed and stay there until she was better. My mother, also born and raised up there, has now beaten her and is getting on for 98. In the 1930s my mother became a health nut, read Health for All, a natural health journal, eschewed sugar, sausages, white flour, preservatives etc. etc. - all the things which marked her as eccentric in those days but are pretty much taken for granted nowadays in communities such as ours. She didn't have me vaccinated despite pressure and threats of being reported, wouldn't take or give MB's, antibiotics, aspirin, etc., opposed artificial fertilisers and stock feed. I wish we had known about or had access to things like homeopathy, energy medicine, CS, etc. but there you go. We did what we could with vitamins and minerals, vegetable juices, etc. as and when we could. The creaking gate seems to have hung on longer than the orthodox neighbours. O Let's please not be attacking complete strangers for their choices!!! Freedom of choice, which allows all of us the ability to even have this list, works both ways. We choose to look into alternatives, some do not. As much as I wish in my head to control the world, I know it is not my place, EVER, to do that. We all have a sphere of influence, and that is where it should end. I know I may be oversensitive on this, but we all encounter this kind of stuff every day, and I have been personally verbally attacked by strangers for my choices, and let me tell you, I DO NOT LIKE IT. It will NEVER make me quit my choices, and to even hint at it is wrong. It is impossible to live in a perfect world, and to even think we ever will is naive, especially since everyones view of a perfect world is different.
