Re: CSIntroduction [harbor freight]
Hi Ole Bob, Yes, I understand the need for a nice coherent beam if a person is going to eyeball it for the Tyndall effect. I was thinking more along the lines of having red, green and blue LEDs on one side of the cell and light sensors on the other side to measure the light transmission changes for each wavelength. Based on some of the thoughts expressed on this list,it seems we would expect to see changes in blue first, then green and finally, red. Perhaps one might wish to stop brewing when a certain reading in green or red is reached. This might give a qualitative spin on the conductivity readings. Plotting conductivity versus Tyndall readings for a brewing run might show something interesting. I have been keeping samples of each batch to check conductivity and Tyndall effect over time as I seek to stabilize my process and if this idea is workable, I could also check to see if there are shifts in wavelength readings over time. If there is a shift to higher readings in the green and red wavelengths, and the blue readings go down, this might tell us something about the changes in particle size as related to storage containers, light exposure, etc. Just thinking out loud, does anyone else have an interest in this sort of thing? Re: CSElectrode Surface Area
Fellow CS'ers, Of all the responses I received directly (1), there was one that stood out from all the rest. It indicated the total surface area of both electrodes is used to calculate the current density. There was no mention of the reasoning behind the conclusion, so I am still looking for more of the bits and pieces of the answer. It seems to me,though, since the reason we care about low current density is the apparent association with smaller silver particles being released from the anode, we don't care what the current density is at the cathode. That is to say, does the current density at the cathode effect the particle size as much as the density at the anode seems to? If it does not, then it makes sense to me to figure the current density on less than 100% of the *anode* wetted surface area and perhaps in the 50% to 70% zone. What be the thoughts of others? CSElectrode Surface Area
Greetings Folks! As time has gone on, the subject of current density has come up now and then and several folks have mentioned what they thought was the appropriate maximum density for minimum silver size. I do not recall anyone mentioning whether they based current density on 100% of the wetted surface area of both electrodes or only the wetted surface areas facing each other. I tend to think that most of the current is leaving or entering the surfaces facing each other. Re: CSAway too long
Hi Mike, Since most relays these days have at least one set of N.O. (normally open) and N.C.(normally closed) contacts, you could use the N.C. contacts and the relay will pass the current until the relay is *activated* which will switch off the current. You could use the potentiometer as a variable voltage reference for an op amp. and when the voltage drops below the reference voltage the relay activates and shuts off the brew current. If you use the N.O. contacts with a light bulb or led, it will switch on when when the current goes off, letting you know the job is done. I think that the multiple nine volt battery setup is a good basic thing but is not suitable for much in terms of bells and whistles, so if one chooses bells and whittles, one ought to seriously consider a plug-in power supply of some sort. Trem Said: What really bothers me is that people won't spend any money on technology and yet they will go to the doctor, get a prescription and usually spend over a hundred dollars for their prescription and they won't consider spending that amount on a machine that will last them a lifetime and make the product that gets them off the pharmaceutical t_t. I definitely agree. It seems that most folks do not choose to be responsible for themselves and seek remedies for their lackings from someone else. They would have something done to them or for them, rather than learn how to do it for themselves. If something doesn't go quite right, it is easier for these folks to sue someone than to admit that maybe they didn't learn something well enough to achieve the goal. They are not living their own life. Their life is a composite of all the institutions and entities that they require to make decisions for them. If we are going spend money for bells and whistles technology, we also need to consider spending a few more bucks on the appropriate power supply technology to get the job done as desired. CSHoney
Hi Kids, Tracy posted this honey info on his alternative health list and I feel it is worth passing on. I don't recall if anyone has mentioned honey as part of a CS ointment David __ Is Honey Really a healthful food? The popular idea that whereas white sugar is bad for health, honey is good, and whereas white sugar injures the teeth, honey does not, is quite erroneous.. Honey is a product of nectar from flowers which has been acted on by formic acid from a beers organism, and is relatively poor in minerals in comparison with the acid-forming tendency of its high sugar content, being a much more mineral-poor, acid-forming and decalcifying sweetening agent then unfiltered maple syrup: The writer has known of cases where misguided persons, giving up sugar, commenced to use honey liberally, believing that since it was a naturalsweet, it was good for them, and could be eaten freely, even excessively, without ill effects. The result was that their teeth became decalcified even at a faster rats than when they used white sugar, which., knowing that it was bad, they would tend to use more sparingly. In a certain instance the members of a family of vegetarians who produced honey and earned their living selling it, and who, consequently, used it in quantity, found that their teeth gradually wore away to their roots, which became abscessed and had to be removed. Honey, being very acid-forming forms large quantities of carbonic acid in the blood, without sufficient alkaline minerals to balance it and hold it in cheek, from attacking the teeth and robbing them of calcium. Page 149 For this reason, the free use of honey, like of other mineral-poor concentrated sweets, gradually destroys the teeth, especially if used excessively together with an otherwise acid forming diet. Use of honey by vegetarians is an anomaly, since honey is an animal food in the true sense of the word, just as cow's milk is. The cow eats grass and from it produces a mannary secretion called milk. The bee takes nectar from a flower and by adding to it formic acid produced by glands of its body (this formic acid being a sort of insect milk forms the product known an honey. In addition to formic acid, honey contains manite acid, which interacts with protein, forming alcohol, ammonia and carbonic acid. Thus honey introduces three acids into the body - formic, manite and carbonic. This produces acid fermentation in the stomach, leading in some casts to milder or severer nervous intoxication and systemic poison. The old Norse, by soaking malt grain in solution of honey, made an alcoholic beverage named nyod (mead ). Many honeys are toxic due to bees going to flowers with toxic elements in their nectar. This is especially true when bees are in the vicinity of trees or plants that have been sprayed with poisonous insecticides. In East Nepaul, bees turn pollen of the Rhododendron flower intro a honey that produces a state of stupor similar to that produced by opium. Combined with starches, the sugar of honey sets up fermentation and gas production. The laxative virtue ascribed to honey has its basis in this very fermentation, since the body, as an act of self-preservation, eliminates through the bowels the toxins and ptomaine's generated by the mixture of honey with food. Dr. A. E. Gibson writes: It is a common popular belief that honey is a legitimate sweet, and can be used with dietetic safety where other kinds of sugar are regarded as dangerous. Honey in combination with other food-stuffs is even move dangerous than ordinary white sugar. Healthful Alkaline Sources of Natural Fruit Sugar There are several excellent substitutes for honey and cane sugar which have been imported from the Near East. One of these is carob or St. John's bread. This is a long, dry fruit which is available in powdered form or, as a thick syrup resembling molasses. In either case there is present levulose, or fruit sugar, in combination with an abundance of alkaline minerals. This is one of the finest sweeting agents, since it is sufficiently rich in minerals to prevent its highly digestible fruit sugar content from having any acid-forming or decalcifying effect. Another sweetening agent now available is Grape Nectar and Butter imported from Turkey. These are made entirely from the juice of organically grown Turkish grapes, which has been concentrated down to a syrup or a butter consistency. These products supply pure grape sugar, one of the best of all sugars, in combination with iron and alkaline minerals, so that when used as a sweetening agent, there is no harmful, acid-forming or decalcifying effect, but rather, in addition to sugar, valuable minerals and vitamins of the grape are supplied in concentrated form. CSSpeculation and facts
Hi Roger and non-Rogers, I agree Roger. Except for unexpected discoveries, facts are generally the end result of a long line of What If's. The folks who are conceptually creative and good at What If are not all necessarily skilled in the crafts required to turn the what if into a fact or find out why it cannot be a fact. Some folks have extraordinary skills for turning ideas into physical reality but are not very good at generating the ideas. I am a bit of both of these types and have found that when I have exhausted all of the 5 or 6 ways I thought of to accomplish something, sometimes just an anecdote (some guy in Nebraska who went into his barn, took parts from his tractor, hay bailer, dead toaster and wires/welds them together and now is producing all the electricity for his farm.) is all I need for inspiration to find a workable solution for my goal. See below David -- The following form contents were entered on 23rd Jun 0 Date = 23 Jun 0 17:49:21 email = dan.stew...@sk.sympatico.ca subject = Original Grander Water Catalog catalog = What is happening to our water? We are rapidly destroying water's life-giving capacities on a small and large scale. Water sources are being polluted from industrial wastes, deforestation, herbicide sprays and household detergents; by anything that runs into our rivers and water sources. Attempts to purify our drinking water by distilling or chlorinating processes have proven to be unhealthy for us in the long term. Distilled water strips the body of trace minerals and elements, weakening our immune system. Chlorination not only weakens our immune system but also introduces harmful chemical compounds and their vibrations into our water. Revitalized water can restore the natural properties to your water. The Grander Living Water System Water picks up information through vibrations of everything it comes into contact with, whether it's pollutants or healthy organisms. Grander says damage to water goes hand in hand with a loss of vibrations. He invented a system that restores lost energy to water extremely pure water from a spring within the Austrian Alps is set in a swinging condition by use of magnetic energies which produce high frequency vibrations rough many complicated procedures a unique concentrate is produced. The concentrate is encased in sealed chambers within a stainless steel unit. As unhealthy water passes through the unit, its molecular structure changes, being influenced by implosion and vibrations from the higher frequency concentrate encased in the unit. Johann Grander Born in 1930, Johann Grander had a fascination for the ebb and flow of nature's cycles and systems. In his early sixties he invented a massage roller and then went on to learn how to re-energize water. Using a magnetic generator powered by a 'water battery' he found that high frequency energies were transferring permanently into the water, which was altering the water structure and restoring its natural ability to cleanse and heal. Experts in the scientific communities as well as homeopathy and holistic sciences have proven the 'Memory' of water; the carrying capacity of water for 'energy', and the ability of water to 'remember'. Grander realises that water retains information, even after the most stringent Purification and filtration processes. The vibrational imprint of toxins (mercury, lead, chromium etc.) remaining in the water, are in turn passed on to living organisms. The 'remembered' life negating imprints have the same detrimental effect as their physical counterparts. In other words, Grander is aware that biological organisms respond to and are affected by energetic frequencies in the same way that they respond to and are affected by physical matter. In fact, living Organisms will spend enormous amounts of energy compensating for the discordant harmonics created by the bad energy 'message'. His invention was appropriately named the 'Living Water' Energizing unit. Utilising three separate electromagnetic energies and the principle of implosion, it works along homeopathic principals to implant life-giving frequencies into water and restore its innate vitality. GRANDER LIVING WATER UNITS 3/8'' Living Water Unit Most convenient for installation on a single line. Allows for energized water to be distributed to a single tap. Applications also include icemakers, ice machines, water coolers, commercial coffee machines and pop dispensing machines. The 3/8'' is also excellent to carry as a portable unit since it can be easily fit with a funnel type arrangement so water, wine, juice, milk or any other liquid product can be poured through and therefore energized. CSBob Beck
Hi CS'ers, I believe the biographical material I read about Bob Beck indicated that he was a physicist before his retirement. I think he is now in his 80's. CSBert Wolf's Trivia
Hi CS'ers, Chef Bert Wolf has had several cooking shows on the PBS where he and his cameras travel around the world watching chefs prepare famous and not-so-famous local cuisine. He likes to pass on the history of how the dishes and eating/drinking customs originated. According to his account (as I recall it) of the glass clinking, in the pubs it was customary for the serving wench to bring a tray of wine-filled mugs to the table and to hand one to each of the guests. Poison was the method of choice in those days, and it was just a matter of coercing the serving wench to give the special mug to the intended victim. After a while, the general public caught on to this and as a remedy, demanded that the wine be served in glasses so any differences in wine color could be noticed. This worked for a while until some one perfected a clear poison and it was painted on the bottom of the glass and when dried, was not noticeable in the faint lighting of the day. To get around this, the guests all held their glasses above the center of the table and began pouring wine from one glass to another to dilute the potentially deadly wine. After enjoying the wine for a while, the jolly guests set about the wine pouring with much merriment and clinking glasses was inevitable. Bert Wolf's accounts of the origins of shaking hands and the military salute relate to the days of knights in (shining?)armor. Apparently, when knights in armor encountered each other, it was difficult to recognize just who was inside the armor, so they took their flattened right hand and slid it between the helmet and the hinged face plate. Rotating the hand 90 degrees and lifting it slightly caused the face plate to expose the knight's face so he could be recognized. Since most knights were right handed, it became customary to greet another knight with the right arm extended forward and shaking hands as a gesture of good will since it was difficult for a knight to reach for his sword when his hand was in the clutches of the other knight. Interesting stuff, huh?
