I think that's the tape I sent Al years ago. I've built a system from
it but it is too unstable and incomplete to be usable, not that I
remember V1.5 being particularly stable, but this is really unusable.
There are read errors on the tape.

I have a V3.0 pristine system disk image if anyone wants. I no longer
have a web site to host files to, so if someone is willing to host the
file, let me know.

Well, the authorization code pretty clearly states what this
license is:
the final hobbyist license, presumably minted in 2020-03-01.

So, on the one hand, it is basically not a personalized license.
On the other
hand, it expires on 2022-01-01 and is the final license, no more
after that.

Re: [Simh] HPE has started emailing the final hobbyist licenses

2020-03-13 Thread Robert G. Schaffrath
V5.5-2 is the environment I have. When I joined the hobbyist program in
2004, I bought the VMS V7.2 CD but I also had an old 4mm DAT tape with a
final image backup of a MicroVAX 3900 running V5.5-2 prior to its being
decommissioned at the end of 1996 and the hardware scrapped. I was
eventually able to extract the image from the 4mm with a combination of
4mm drive on Windows NT and the VMS V7.2 system to build disks. When I
booted the V5.5-2 image under the MicroVAX SiMH simulator, it came right
up without any problems as it believed, and the installed PAK's
believed, it was running on a real MicroVAX 3900.

These days I boot it perhaps once every 3 or 4 months just to reminisce.
I get a kick out of looking at some of the kernel mode Macro-32 I had
written way back in the early 1990's. One of executables gives me a
control-T type status display when I press control-P and the other
causes the time to be continuously displayed in the lower right side of
the status bar of a VT4xx terminal, updating every second (it actually
works with Tera Term 4.x in VT420 mode). They run Kernel or Exec mode
because they load themselves into P1 space and run basically as the DOS
equivalent of TSR's. Looking at that old code I find it hard to believe
I wrote it. There is also a lot of VAX BASIC stuff I wrote with SMG$.
Hard to believe so much of this is 28 to 30 years old.

As for 7.2, I have not booted the V7.2 image since the hobbyist PAK's
expired years ago and I never kept them up.

Andy Hoffman has V4.2 except there is a VMS042MUP tape he needs because you
can't install any layered products without the MUP. So if anyone has one pipe
up and Andy can probably get a V4.2 release created.

Andy posted this on C.O.V 6/14/2019:

Where are 4.2 and 4.3 you ask? I have been able to install 4.2, but I have
been unable to find
the mandatory update VMS042MUP. Without this you can't install any layered
products, so I
stopped at this point. Actually it was fun working on it because if you do
an upgrade rather than
a base install there is a section which updates the system console media.
Fun and games
remembering how to use Exchange and write a DEFBOO.CMD file!

If anyone knows where I can get my digits on VMS042MUP and/or an LSE
distribution for VMS 4
   please do get in touch.

   Best regards,

   Andy Hoffman

I haven't seen a V5.2 but on VAXHaven there is a V5.3 and V5.4-2 on the TK50 images
page <https://vaxhaven.com/TK50_Image_Archive>

However, the V5 versions will require PAKS as the LMF was introduced with V5.0

Well, the authorization code pretty clearly states what this license is:
the final hobbyist license, presumably minted in 2020-03-01.

So, on the one hand, it is basically not a personalized license. On
the other
hand, it expires on 2022-01-01 and is the final license, no more
after that.

6.2. There was OpenVMS Alpha V1.5, but it wasn't a full release, if
memory serves. V6.2 was the first fully-functional release. That's the
first version for which we supported our software (TCPware, MultiNet, etc).

I have an archive of the original Quasijarus site here:

I didn’t prune it, so all the files and whatnot are in there. If this isn’t

But maybe something SIMH’ that maybe needs to be absorbed, I found this SUN-2

It’s not TME, and it’s basically just enough hardware to boot SunOS 2… Might be

Be sure to thank him when you renew.

The email you receive with the PAKs should have your Hobbyist ID on

Re: [Simh] HPE has started emailing the final hobbyist licenses

2020-03-11 Thread Dan Gahlinger
There are Five Options I can see:

  1. buy a commercial license from somewhere ($$$), I haven't seen any on ebay
in a long time, but it might be an option, or a member here, etc
  2. Use a commercial license you purchased in the past that doesn't expire (I
have a few of these, and will be what I will do)
  3. Use a version of VMS prior to the requirement for a termination date on
the licenses (v5 and previous I think)
  4. continue to use it despite the termination date and violate copyright
(not good and not recommended!)
  5. Roll the system clock back to a year which the months align the same, but
gives you time to use it, keep rolling back as needed (pretty much the same as
#4)

Currently, after the current hobby license expire, your options are to either
become a pirate or to learn to love vintage Unix. Of course this is almost two
years in the future: things could end up changing in that time.

Hari from the HPE OpenVMS customer lab is the administrator of the hobbyist
program. He once told me that he maintains the program only out-of-hours and
in his own time. Without his efforts the programme may have ended sooner.

Be sure to thank him when you renew.

Yup. Got mine too and it also ends in the same digits. And thank him for me.

Still, this is a bit of a sad thing to do. I guess I should be
looking at NetBSD for a MicroVAX I have.

I remember trying to find pricing for a tcpip/ucx license for a MicroVax 3100
shortly after Compaq bought out EC. After three days of phone tag, and frequent
"Which version of Windows doed VMS run on", I finally managed to get someone
who left a quote on my answering machine.

$3000 per user.

I tried calling back to find out more info about this quote the next day using
the provided phone number, but was told that that individual no longer worked
there, and they had no idea what this VMS thing was.

Could never find any path to the VMS people after that. Ended up hacking
something less useful using a variety of hacks, mostly involving ckermit and a
serial line. Not as fast or reliable as it could have been.
