[SLUG] Server problems and my day at linux.

2002-10-24 Thread Ken Foskey

I just spent an unproductive day at the School. The network appears to
be dodgey and not pulling data across very quickly from the internet.

My 'server' is now crashing like crazy it takes a few hours to crash and
a hardware reset brings it back to life. I just ran it on the desktop
with a screen and it got a VFS error with 8192 not enough something. I
looked and there were 200 odd nmbd clients so I killed them before I
left (why would I be getting them?). ssh dies and will not accept
connections so hardware reset is my fix at present.

The squid proxy does not appear to want to get data from the internet,
it is very very slow. I left a script running with apt-get upgrage -y
and sleep 600 then repeat running to hopefully get the cache updated
overnight. The new computer I have apt-get install -y xwindows, rsync,
and ssh. Hopefully I will have some data in the squid proxy when I get
back tomorrow morning.

Another day in paradise...

In the past I have done this by placing a disk with the desired configuration onto the second IDE channel and booting off  a floppy disk with tomsrtbt (a tiny linux distribution)

Then I run 'dd if=/dev/hda of=/dev/hdc bs=8M' to copy the data (Using 8MB blocks seemed to give the best performance, but YMMV)

After this is complete, remove the source hard drive, boot up and change the hostname.

There are probably more elegant solutions that don't involve using a screwdriver, but this one worked for me.

tomsrtbt is available at http://www.toms.net/rb/

[SLUG] Newbie question - connecting to bigpond cable

2002-10-24 Thread Paul Gilchrist
Hi,
I have a question about connecting to bigpond cable with Mandrake 8.2.
As far as I can see, the modem is connected correctly to the server, but when I run the bpalogin client, the authorisation does not work. The port which it listens on seems strange to me. Can anyone confirm that my version of bpalogin should work?
(I'm pretty sure I am using the correct logon id. Anyway, the error I see is "other error", not "logon not recognised".)
(note that in the trace there are many kernel warnings. I think this is because Mandrake does not recognise the on-board sound card on my PC. This is bad, but I don't see why it should stop the internet connection)
If anyone can give me some tips I would appreciate it.
The details are:
I downloaded bpalogin-2.0-linux.tar.gz from
http://bpalogin.sourceforge.net/
(following the instructions in http://www.linuxathome.net/bpalogin.php )
I put bpalogin in /usr/sbin and
bpalogin.conf in /etc  after editing the username and password.
(also bpalogin.init in /etc/rc.d/init.d although I have not used this yet)
I check that my modem is connected by typing
ftp dce-server.
Then I start bpalogin by typing
bpalogin -c /etc/bpalogin.conf
The resulting messages in /var/log/messages are given at the end of this mail.
thanks

[SLUG] Swann Versacam MINI

2002-10-24 Thread Paul L Daniels

Quite some time ago ( in June I believe ) Rahul Bhargava mentioned that he had
successfully managed to get a Swann Versacam MINI running under linux with the cpia2
driver. Well, I've got myself one of those cams including the driver but cannot quite
seem to get the device to 'work'.

So, I'm asking, Rahul, would you be able to give me [us] a run-down on how you got
this little (it is rather small isn't it) beast to run with your linux? (btw, I'm
running 2.4.18)

Regards.

RE: [SLUG] Is my IRIX box i386 ? Can I put Linux on it ?

2002-10-24 Thread Minh Van Le
How much do these O2 boxes cost ? From what I saw on sgi.com, the O2's are
the 2nd last supported generation of Irix boxes. There're 4 or 5 generations
above an O2.

So my guess is an O2's pretty old.

That's a nice friend. You would be able to sell it

Do let me know if you intend to do so.

Re: [SLUG] Multiple Samba Domains

2002-10-24 Thread Yuri
Heya

Have you tried to use "include = /etc/samba/smb.conf.%m" directive? I've used
it to have 2 separate virtual samba computers, pinky and brain, when people
were requesting pinky, it was reading config info from
/etc/samba/smb.conf.pinky and smb.conf.brain for Brain computer name. Pinky
had regular security=share and Brain had security=domain or smth like that, i
forgot

It worked awesome, different shares, names, etc

I bet it's all over the google of free samba books, but if you have any
problems, i can email you my config files

Have fun :)

[SLUG] Software RAID-5?

2002-10-24 Thread Yuri
Heya :)

I was thinking of making a RAID-5 out of 3 120gig drives, 'cuz the thought of
loosing my silly stuff is freaking me out. I have some questions though
before i do it...

a) How do you know when one of the harddrive fails? Do i have to look in the
messages all the time for it or will it ( or can i make it) beep on bootup or
smth like that to let me know that it failed?

b) Is it CPU-intensive? I have 4 drives right now in P133 with 98MBram all
using Promise cards and it's running 2.4.18-xfs kernel (rh7.2), and not sure
if my setup will handle RAID-5.

c) This is silly, but can i add more drives later to that RAID-5? Like another
1 or 2 drives and not loose anything, or should i be looking at LVM rather
than raid5?

Any replies, suggestions or links to RTFM are greatly appreciated :) Thanky in
advance

OK - a little more information is needed here.

What does netstat -r show when your PPP commection is up?

What are you using to dial the PPP conection? A script? A GUI based
dialer? Which user are you running it as?

If you're using a script - do you have the "defaultroute" option in it?

What does /etc/ppp/options say?

Give us a bit more info, and someone will probably be able to help.

cat /proc/mdstat ... From mine (software RAID-1):

  Personalities : [raid1]
  read_ahead 1024 sectors
  md0 : active raid1 ide/host0/bus1/target0/lun0/part2[0]
ide/host0/bus0/target0/lun0/part2[1]
38832576 blocks [2/2] [UU]

  unused devices:

Those two U's mean "up". :-) It also gives you a cute little status bar
whilst the drives are syncing. Also, most distros will have a cronjob that
mails you if a hard drive has failed.

RAID is pretty simple stuff, so it's usually I/O speed that you should look
into if it's important to you. The gnome.org machines run on software
RAID-5, and we haven't had too many problems... However, if there are lot of
writes going on, it will take a fair bit of cpu / kernel time.

> c) This is silly, but can i add more drives later to that RAID-5? Like another
> 1 or 2 drives and not loose anything, or should i be looking at LVM rather

Because of the way the data is laid out, you can't add more drives later
with RAID-5 without backing up and creating a new array. However, if you're
just interested in more redundancy, you can create a RAID-5 array of RAID-1
arrays. This sounds silly, but sometimes it's useful.

LVM is worth looking at, but is going to change in 2.6 anyway. :-)

[SLUG] OT: Mobile SIM cards?

2002-10-24 Thread Rev Simon Rumble
I'm coming back to Sydney in December and want to get a mobile for the
month. Ideally I'd just use my own phone and put in an Aussie SIM
card. Is it possible/reasonably priced to buy a SIM card from an
Aussie provider?

(The alternative being using my UK SIM card which will make the
providers a tidy profit at the expense of me and any callers.)

Of course it is.

You can buy pre-paid starter packs which include a SIM, a period of rental
and some calls. Then you just top up as necessary.

Alternately, sign up with one of the big three, and get a new SIM on
whatever package you choose. You don't have to buy a phone to get a SIM.

The pre-paid option would be best, though. You only pay for what you use.

For the record, 2 jobs ago we had a bunch of O2s for high-res imaging work,
and they had Quake installed, and these rumours of slowness are highly
exaggerated.

everyone has their own experiences i guess.
i like sgi machines
but this O2 is pretty worthless.
but that could be because no one has bothered to do anything with it for a
long long time.

Well just so that people know that O2 are used for useful things.
The one on my desk here in front of me is used for molecular structure
calculation using a program called texsan.
That prog takes x-ray diffraction data and works back from the
scattering pattern toi determine the actual molecular structure of the
crystal. You can display it on screen then and rotate it around. The
report format for the data is TeX -> dvi -> PostScript. So I have good
fun with students that want to incorporate it via cut-n-paste into Word
:-)
[so if you ever want to get rid of it as its too slow for quake.]

Oh it's the same O2 that sometimes kindly supplies its video cable to
bail out SLUG meetings.

Best wishes,
Mike

a game?).

but if you need a donation O2 machine, i will swing the matter by my boss
and see if he still wants it for some strange and obscure reason.

if he doesnt need it, then i'll see what i can do :)

[SLUG] (no subject)

2002-10-24 Thread Brenton Fletcher
I have a question about linux. I am trying to do a partitionless install of
Red Hat 7.1. In disk Druid, it shows the main hard drive to bee completely
full. The free space on the drive = 5.77 GB in windows.
The problem is, that during the actual installation, it tells me the cd
image cannot be copied to the hard drive. It saya that this is probably due
to the hard drive being full. when specifiing the amount of space to use, it
is set to 2000. the customized installation ocupies around 1300(Mb). could
anyone help?
