It's an Intel 82845G something. Last I checked (late last year) the
driver didn't exist. I've just checked the intel site and there's a
driver posted on the 20/1/03. Hopefully I'll get a chance to test it in
the next few weeks.

We're about to drop Debian onto some IBM hardware (x335 1RU Dual Xeon
machines) at a few places I'm involved with, and I haven't heard anything
about it not working. All the hardware is supported, and it doesn't seem
like it'll be any major hassle.

A little bit of sneakiness in the hardware spec areas is helpful when
you're brand name shopping. If you can get a list of the hardware in the
machine, just chase down the drivers for individual components with google.

Also, generally what you'll find is that if a machine will support one
flavor of Linux, it supports them all -- the drivers are in the kernel
(Though not necessarily on the stock boot disk one!).

Have used Dell servers and HP clients quite a bit. Debian is generally a
cinch on server hardware, but sometimes a pain on client hardware as the
stable distro may be a bit behind the times on hardware support (you can get
some interesting variations in name-brand hardware, as they tend to have
components made in bulk specifically for them).

No need for custom kernel builds (unless you're after very specific patches
or minimal kernels) Debian standard kernels support software RAID and many
hardware RAID adapters.

Re: [SLUG] 4-button touchpad on Clevo laptop

2003-02-18 Thread Sebastian Welsh
Depending on the touchpad you are using, you may find an appropriate
XFree86 module for it that will work better. I have a system with a
synaptics touchpad (can be found at
http://mobilix.org/touchpad_driver.html). This is a pretty common
device, and this module supports things like double tapping, wheel mouse
emulation and the like.

http://cpbotha.net/clevo5600/clevo5600_linux/ indicates that the clevo
has a synaptics touchpad, so assuming that your hardware is the same you
may find that this module works.

Installation is pretty simple and well documented if you download the
drivers, but if you need a hand then let me know.

Nothing whatsoever

I tried both with and without the Zaxismapping(which, BTW, is only
really to tell XFree which buttons map to the scroll wheel. Buttons

take a sniffer trace while the email is sent. With timestamps and
ethereal to decode the TCP stream, you shouls be able to figure out
where the problem is.

You should explain more in details the mail setup: describe which

Just a wild guess here, but I think a scoll mouse already uses all 5
buttons.
1 - Left Click
2 - right Click
3 - middle click (click scroll wheel
4 - click up on scroll wheel (scroll up). ZAxis Mapping stuff 4
5 - click down on scroll wheel (scroll down) Z Axis mapping stuff 5

So either you need to define buttons 6 & 7 (Possibly over limit of mouse
driver from something in archives) or you need to remove ZAxisMapping if
you do not have a scroll wheel.

[SLUG] 4-button touchpad on Clevo laptop

2003-02-18 Thread Peter Chubb

Can anyone help me to get the third and fourth mouse buttons working
on my laptop?

I'm using XFree 4.2.

The relevant XFConfig-4 section is:

Section "InputDevice"
Identifier "Mouse0"
Driver "mouse"
Option "Protocol" "ImPS/2"
Option "buttons" "5"
Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5"
#Option "Emulate3Buttons"
Option "Device" "/dev/psaux"
EndSection

Nothing happens when I press the two middle buttons.

I've run through all the different protocols that I can think of; most
give totally erratic mouse motion.

[SLUG] slow sending email....DNS issues

Hi,

I have written a system which sends out email to a database.

Recently I have been experiencing major performance problems. The software
I have written and use has remained unchanged so I suspect I have a problem
with DNS resolutions on my Linux box. The emails themselves do get
delivered correctly but the process takes hours rather than minutes.

I have contacted my hosting provider and they have said that there is a
reverse lookup address in their DNS. Can anyone help me find out and test
if the DNS the system is using is configured correctly?

Does anyone know how I can track down the reason for the performance
bottleneck?

I have also check my resolv.conf file and both the primary and secondary DNS
are specified there.

Can anyone help?

Probably. I bought a Verbatim CF reader ($38 at Harris Technology) and
it works fine. They do a multi-card reader too. I also have a
usbdrive which also works on Linux.

All you need is a kernel with usb mass storage and scsi (because the usb
drives appear as a scsi device) support, with the appropriate entries in
/etc/modules.conf:

alias usb-controller usb-uhci
alias usb-controller1 usb-ohci
alias usb-controller2 usb-ohci
alias usb-controller3 ehci-hcd

and /etc/fstab:

/dev/sdb1 /mnt/flash autouser,noauto,nosuid 0 0

and the hotplug tools installed and configured. I'm using RH7.3 and
all I had to do manually was add the line in /etc/fstab (and if you
have kudzu installed it will even do that automatically).

WARNING: insert your CF card into the reader *before* connecting it to
the USB port, and disconnect the reader before removing the card, or
you will corrupt the data on the card. I know, I've done it, and
although I did manage to recover most of the 100 or so photos I lost,
it wasn't easy. I now know far more about the Exif file format than I
ever wanted to know, and I had to remember all I knew about FAT16 but
had hoped never to need again.

Cheers,

John

2003-02-18 Thread Robert Maurency
Not sure about that one, but I left my Apacer Mega-Steno (multi-card reader:
http://www.apacer.com/apacer_english/product_html/mega_steno11.asp) plugged
in to my laptop which runs SuSe 8.1, and it automatically popped up
shortcuts to all the usb device's drives.

Very nice!

Subject: [SLUG] USB CF card readers on Linux

Hi all,

Does anyone know if compact flash card readers like this:

http://www.adelong.com.au/Products_Dec_2001/MM/MMGEN052.htm

or better yet, multi card readers like this:

http://www.adelong.com.au/Products_Dec_2001/MM/MMGEN038.htm

are supported on Linux?

I've looked at the kernel USB options and a couple of specific cards
do seem to be supported but the ones that are, I can't find in
Australia.

Thanks in advance,
Erik

Don't know about the CF readers you have listed below, but I just got a
SanDisk cf reader/writer from everythinglinux last night.
http://www.everythinglinux.com.au/item/SDDR75?elinux=bb4ecaa7f069aef61c87f0cee7c041e2
More or less worked straight out of the box on debian. Just need the usb
hotplug stuff (which I already had installed), then mount it as a scsi
drive (sda1 on my machine).

Cheers..Steve.

The USB ones can be a little picky. Some brands do not work,
at least not easily, but others do. You will need to load
the usb-storage module.

Check this list: http://www.qbik.ch/usb/devices/showdevcat.php?id=11

I see those URLs show PQI readers. This brand is generally
supported right out of the box...I have a PQI travelflash
5 in one and it just works.

The kernel USB options only show ones that are "weird"..most
just use the usb-storage API which is pretty generic.

Either seek out the most humungous heat sink you can lay your hands on,
or seek out a quieter fan.

So far, no one has posted a source of really quiet fans. Of course, a
good quiet fan that pumps lots of air can also cause your case to hum

I have a couple of PII 400 machines which are very noisy. As part of
the campaign to make them quieter, I was wondering if there were any
no-fan heatsinks around that could prevent the PII 400s from melting
down.

Google reveals that world+dog would like to sell me a heatsink *with*
fan - but I see no heatsinks without a fan.

Is there such a thing?

I know you solved it with the ServerAlias directive, but web-wise the

to be the canonical ones. Strange to see this thread, I was fooling
around with this just this morning.

Until this morning I had whole different virtual hosts for every

[SLUG] SQUID on a dial-up gateway

2003-02-18 Thread Chris
Gday Everyone,
Okay -- ive got a small Debian Server which serves samba shares, etc.

Clients can connect to the net through a small php file, which executes
pon.

Now my problem is that im running (well, at least trying) to run a squid
proxy server. However squid will refuse to work until the internet is
connected, and then I need to ssh in and run '/etc/init.d/squid start'.
Now the rest of the family are not very computer-litirate so I don't
want to have them trying to start and stop squid.

However how can i get squid to start without being connected to the
'net.

BTW, If anybody would like the script (Its GPL) -- just email me back :)

Cheers,
Chris

They're very Microsoftish - pretty slick marketing, but absolutely nothing
of substance behind it.

The problem with all of them is that all you're doing is transplanting one
shitty, proprietary system for another. Not a winner.

We need iCal support in Evolution, a Windows version of Evolution, and a
good iCal server for Linux (there may be one already, I haven't checked).

Windows, the OS, isn't too bad. It's an infrastructure thing. What we need
to do is rid ourselves of the shitty proprietary protocols (like the ones
that run Exchange).

Those Halloween documents are s right.
