It was for setting up a development environment - I basically wanted
different libraries under /lib without having to build an entire system.
'cp -al' turned out to be the solution, as it crates all the needed
directories and populates them with hard-links to files.

note also 2.4's bind mounts which are real good for this,
eg (/etc/fstab lines):

 /home /usr/local/chroot/unstable/home nonebind0 2
 /tmp/usr/local/chroot/unstable/tmp nonebind0 2
 /usr/local/src /usr/local/chroot/unstable/usr/local/src none bind 0 2

(on my system /home is in turn an nfs mount, so stuff like that still
seems to work ok)

2003-03-10 Thread Louis Selvon
Hi Mathew, et al:

Louis How do I do what you did ? i.e :

1. Convert to iso images , and ;

I had only windows on this machine to start with so I used a windows iso
tool. Not certain how to do this under linux. See James notes for linux
version.

Louis I'm, the same here. My master PC only has Windows 2000. I want to try
Linux 8.0 on this PC before I replace the slave PC RH 7.2 with this one. I'll
search from Windows help how to do this iso thing.

2. Install using the hard drive option

I will have to check this when I get home from work as I do not have the
install cd's with me. I do know that it was done in text install mode.
You can get to this by typing linux text at the boot prompt when the
cd boots. I you can not see it there let me know and I will check it out.

Louis I thought with this iso thing, we boot from the harddrive instead. Is
this correct ?

You are right though, after CD has booted there is an option to install via
text mode. I've never used it though.

BTW:
After having reading other replies from this, I will first clean my hard drive
and the CDs themselves and see what this does. Last resort will be this iso
thing.

Cheers

Louis.

In some respects it might be better to have a usually-hidden share setup in

Maybe you could reinstall everything?

If you have PXE-equipped network cards, then you don't even have to worry
about that. Just set up your dhcp server correctly (docs on the syslinux
site), use pxeboot from syslinux and you're away.

[SLUG] video capture / compression

2003-03-10 Thread Del
Hi,

Can anyone suggest a good video capture / compression card and
software that works well with Linux? I want it to be relatively
console driven, in that I don't want to put a keyboard on the
machine that's doing the video in/out, but I do have ethernet
running over there.
I've got a spare machine that I've plugged in over where my
hi-fi kit goes, it's loaded up with MP3s and plays those fine
but I'd like to record movies off cable and store them on
VCD rather than the VHS tapes I'm using at the moment.
I've played with an old Buz board/box my brother gave me but
with limited success -- the driver doesn't seem to want to
detect the card and nobody on the mailing list for that is
much help. Also it does MJPEG compression / playback whereas
what I really want is VCD / SVCD i.e. MPEG-1 / 2.
Also, I would prefer it if the card did capture from composite
video + separate audio input rather than being a TV tuner only
type card -- since the signal is coming off cable rather than
an antenna (and it's going through my video amp which is
cabled for separate video / audio outputs).
There was a review of video capture cards in the last APC but
no indications as to which ones would work with Linux.
