RE: [SLUG] linux gateway

2003-07-04 Thread Jasper Streit
Hi Shaun,
If you can spare an old computer with an ethernet card (or two).. I
recommend using smoothwall, ( http://www.smoothwall.org/ ) which is a
free linux based firewall that has the option of being a DHCP server
(makes it real easy to get the other computers on the net). Although I
use this box for Cable internet- I have noticed that there is dial-up
support as well.
The wonderful thing about smoothwall is that your partner can get it to
dial up to the internet through her browser or have it set to dial on
demand.. You can access the smoothwall on port 81 at it's IP through any
webbrowser on the local network which provides both a GUI and a shell,
and it also has ssh if you want to just use the terminal. therefore
saving on the need for even having a monitor or keyboard on the firewall
box.
Anyway, check it out,
Cheers,
Jasper

Subject:[SLUG] linux gateway

hi,
I want to run linux as a gateway computer between my lan and the
internet.
I am well aware of the tools needed to acomplish this task as I have
been using linux for the last 2 years or so.
my dilemmer is this.
I am the only one who knows and understands linux in my household, and
my partner prefers to use windows.
I am searching for a way to enable her to be able to point and click and
start or stop pppd and get the usual connection statistics she has
become acustom to.
currently, I run debian3.0 kernel 2.4.20 and speakup-1.5.
I must point out at this point in time that I am a blind user of
GNU/Linux and prefer to use it as my os of choice due to the nature of
the free software movement.
any help on this matter would be greatly appreciated.
thanks in advance.

[SLUG] Newbie here.. a few basic dumb questions.

2003-07-04 Thread L .
Hi,

I appreciate the help.

I am running Redhat 6.0. Gnome Enlightenment.

1) I know that I must run pump to get my machine to
look for a DHCP server to get it's IP address.
I also know that I must put this pump /sbin/ifup to
make it run automatically, but I am not sure exactly
where to place it to ensure that it is run for all
occasions.

2) I have a Compaq Qvision 172 monitor and a SiS2326
video chipset. However, the screen still looks
somewhat bulky and not as hi-res as I would have
expected. Is there any way to find out exactly what I
can do?

3) I tried just a basic Hello world C prog to test
out gcc and g++ however, when I try to run the a.out,
it won't recognise it as an executable. Do I need to
link this file in some way? I've tried using chmod to
force it to be executable but to no avail.

Thanks in advance.

L.

I have also had a problem recently with rhn-register, on a new install of
Redhat 7.1, I believe that the problem in my case (I can't remember if it
is the exact same, but I seem to remember it being very similar) was an
incorrect date/time on the box. Additionally, you may find that up2date +
rhn-register may not work without being significantly updated anyway, (and
about 12 other dependencies besides). YMMV

After a few alternative approaches to updating the system (eg: downloading
updated up2date rpm's + dependencies) I gave up (it was only installed that
day so nothing to loose) and am today downloading/installing gentoo
(www.gentoo.org) (over a modem, should be interesting...)

[SLUG] I Need Help Please.

2003-07-04 Thread KenGreen
Greetings,

Hi, I have a problem and I do not know if it relates to the BPA Login
problem.

I am trying to get Mandrake Linux Security Firewall V9 working for
Bigpond Dial Up Acc.

I log on and nothing happens, it sits there until I try to bring up a
url for a couple of attempts then kicks me off.

Do I need DHCP server configured as in the info at
linuxathome.net/bpalogin.php --For dial a up modem?

Linux box + single desktop ?

As far as I can determine everything is working, I can configure the
firewall and it responds.

I have not configured routing as I do not have Cable or Adsl.

Another question is the gateway would this need to be configured as is
same as machine IP - 192.168.0.1 - even in the example of what can go in
the gateway IP block via help block?

Help files are a little thin and not being an expert on Linux, would
like to get to know more on how to get around and do worthwhile things
instead of having my head stuck in books not knowing the cause or solution.

Anyone live in the western side of Sydney?

Willing to travel with linux box for expert help to get it working.

I would appreciate your help,

Will talk by phone if necessary.

Cheers,

Ken

booted off the cd .. easy as that .. just answered some basic stuff .. ip
addresses .. blah blah blah .. and that was basically it!! oh .. make sure u

2003-07-04 Thread moise lim
hi ken

i m new to linux myself so u need to pardon my rather amatuerish attempt here

i did have problems logging onto my ISP using mandrake 9 and a dialup account
and this was mostly due to me installing too many options in the first
instance and than not reading the errata on

http://www.mandrakelinux.com/en/90errata.php3

part of which said ...

Error scenario: You have an ethernet card for the local LAN and a modem for
internet access and you can't reach the internet.

Why: Drakconnect wrongly asks for a gateway, and ppp can't set your modem
connection as the default route.

Solution: As root, edit /etc/sysconfig/network and manually remove the GATEWAY
entry.
...

of cos .. i dunno if that is really ur problem as i m only guessing at ur
setup here ...

unfortunately i can't help u with the firewall setup in mandrake 9 as i do not
use it.. maybe when i get better at this linux thang i'll check it out ..

as others before me have stated.. a firewall is probably best served using a
dedicated machine ... and this i have done so using smoothwall... of cos ..
it is only very very basic .. but it'll do for the time being.. i can't wait
until i m good enuff to roll my own :))

hope this helps u a bit

Re: [SLUG] linux gateway

ok here's a problem I forsee with this already.
I'm a bind computer user and would need to do a kind of telnet
installation
I have a linux machine already running with speakup on it.
for more info see http://www.linux-speakup.org
I would need some way of doing a telnet type of install so as I can read
the screen and answer the questions and fill in the options etc.
is there anything in the docs that suggest that this can be done?

that's right, you did mention that you are blind and for some inexplicable
reason, i did not think this made any difference.

just goes to show what kind of a genius i am!

anyway, telnet installs are something which are quite alien to me as i am
simply not good enough with linux yet to understand the requirements for such
installs.

i am pretty new to linux so i hope you will excuse my lack of knowledge in
many areas.

perhaps some of the more experienced folks on the mailing list could answer
more competently.

For 2) exit the GUI and try running Xconfigurator (notice uppercase X)
muck around till you get what you want. In later versions it becomes
XFconfig or something like that.

Try completely disabling the firewall first just to get on. If that

Hi Shaun,
To save you trouble you could use your working machine as the dialup server.
As you have all the speakup packages setup you could simply login
through the console directly. I know this may not be the best solution
but it seems straight forward to me.

Hope this helps.

Re: [SLUG] linux gateway

2003-07-04 Thread Guy Ellis
Hi,

Smoothwall and IPCop are distributed as an ISO. Just burn it to a CD and
boot from it. The installer will then build a complete system on your hard
disk.

IPCop is the GPL fork of SmoothWall. The split occurred last year when the
discontinuation of SmoothWall GPL was announced. Strangely enough after the
fork SmoothWall did a backflip and the GPL still exists, however several
developers and many users left to join the IPCop project.

IMHO IPCop has some distinct advantages over SmoothWall.

Cheers,

 - Guy.
