*SNIPPED*

So why not just download the RealPlayer for Linux? You don't even need root priv's to
install it if you only need it for yourself :) The question that should have been
posed (IMHO) would have been about providing streaming MP3.

Here enters the problem; WMA and RAM both have certain in-built protections making
duplication or storing the streams a little more than a trivial process (although not
a LOT more). It's how NewsRadio protect their "scoop" to use the media term or
copyrights.

I usually only get my back up when a site/company decides to use a specific format for
something and there is NO Linux/open-source replacement or native client (closed or
open-source). In the case above, there IS Linux RealPlayer so I don't see the problem
- it's only hard drive space :P

(There was an aborted attempt to do this called "GNOME Basic" too, but it
has basically been forgotten given that Mono is a more robust and useful
solution.)

ASP is just an infrastructure, not a language. You can plug pretty much
anything into it, including Perl, Python, PHP, etc. But everyone wants to
port their VB-based stuff to an ASP-compatible platform on Apache/Linux. :)

Not yet, however there is hope. Ximian's Mono will be able to run VB.NET
once it has a complete parser for VB, so that should mean that Gnumeric,
Abiword, and other office-oriented software will be able to run VB macros
(or at least the .NET variants, which will be in use more regularly as MS

Unless you are a business, whether or not something contains GST isn't
really important. What you more likely want to know is:

- can you complain this as a self-education deducation? yes.

- do you need to have the receipt for this? no.

You can claim both of these under the minor expenses provisions.

And if you really are a business, you still aren't obligated to have a
Tax Invoice since the GST exclusive value of both is less than $50.

Anand

what i remember from reading the ATO guidelines led me to the understanding
that

1/ invoices should show the words "Tax Invoice" displayed prominently
2/ The total GST amt should be displayed separately somewhere on the invoice

i have been told recently that only the total invoice amt needs to be shown
and GST is *assumed* to be included in that total amt.. ie.. 1/11 of total
amt .. but i'll need to verify that myself cos i don't remember seeing that
in the pamphlet that the ATO sent out just prior to the intro of GST.. maybe
things have chgd

the words "Tax Invoice" are important and i believe that the ATO can get very
excited if they find an invoice which does not contain them words :)

of cos .. the ATO is also quite realistic in its expectations with small "mum
+ dad" operations who are not aware of the "tax Invoice" requirement .. but
really .. it is easy enuff to simply write the words on any invoice which
gets handed to a customer ... or a rubber stamp .. or a few lines of code
(watching out for "line creep" - do they still have that problem nowadays???)

Michael,

I'm
using a Creative Blaster 3D on one machine here - it's a RIVA TNT, which works
fine under Mandrake 9.1 - I also have a RIVA TNT2 in the workstation in the
office (which is essentially a creative one anyway) and it also performs fine -
Tuxracer runs quite nicely.

As for
what video cards to use, yes it does depend on  the use... My
workstation at home has a GeForce2 MX400 in it, as it's not really used for
gaming much...  Personally, I'd stick with the GeForce range4 (NVidia) for
ease of use and drivers... Although the new Radeon 5900 shows a lot of
promise.

on in Vienna and if you work at or connect with:

Connect.com.au, AARNET SA RNO, The University of Queensland,
AARNet VIC RNO, AARnet NSW RNO, AARNet ACT RNO, AARNet TAS RNO or
AARNet Grangenet

Then you _have_ direct access to the multicast backbone. If you work for /
connect with these organisation you _may_ have multicast connectivity:

IAP Group / Highway 1, Wantree Development, iiNET, News Interactive,
Healy Communications, A. R. Internet, Vianet Communications, CIA, AAPT,
Braenet, MelbourneIT, Corinthian Internet, News Interactive, Dept. of
Public Works and Service (NSW), AAP, ColesMyer, KPMG, Hutchison 3G, TNT,
Nestle, Vodafone, AARNet, Electronic Arts, CSC, GE, TMP, DFAT and TPG
Internet

I've, no doubt, left of many other organisations. If someone knows of a
definitative list don't be shy. From what I can tell about one-third of
all organisations _may_ have multicast connectivity; I'm unsure how many
have taken it up.

If you are going via your ISP - the best strategy is to ring them up and
ask. Especially if they are listed above.

Hope this helps someone.

Regards,
Anand

[SLUG] Membership, CD, GST

2003-07-14 Thread Robert Tillsley <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Hi Guys

While I suspect the committee can answer this if I email them directly, I
thought others might be interested in the answer for tax purposes.

Basically I bought membership and a debain CD for a bargain of $30. I was just
wondering whether this was including GST or if the fees are GST exempt or
whatever. It doesn't say anything about GST on the receipt.

Cheers

I just got 10 of these little beauties in my mailbox - resending non-signed, as I
suspect its the gpg signature triggering this.

Staněk Daniel - I think you have a broken mailserver.

Re: [SLUG] getting sendmail to accept mail from w2k clients.

2003-07-14 Thread Phil Scarratt
without more info could be any number of things:

- interface sendmail is listening on (inet directive in sendmail.cf)
- it may be possible that the tcp wrapper is stopping the connecting -
check the hosts.allow file
- check the access file for the sendmail configuration - make sure the
ip addresses/network for your clients are listed as relayable.

and probably a number of others. The locations of the files mentioned
depend on the system

I am a Linux Newbie-- know enough to get lost half way.
I have set up a sendmail server - text only environment
I can connect to it with outlook express on w2k pro to check mail
I am unable to get it to accept mail.
Outlook express timesout (set to longest time possible i.e. 5minutes)
Sendmail logs show a corresponding
Lost input channel from [hostname and IP]
the test email says just that 'test email' no attachments etc.
Where or what should I check/tick/lick/kick?

Yeah, totally. I'm a big fan of the bridging stuff in Linux - including
firewalling! Seriously sweet.

I forget what the bridging module is called (it's built into my kernel), but
it ought to load once you start trying to set up the bridge. The manual way
to do it is with brctl, which is fairly obtuse, but it works. You can set up
a bridge without ip addresses at all, with a single ip address on the bridge
interface (br0), or with an ip address on each interface. Very useful.

If you happen to be running Debian, setting a bridge is outrageously simple,
compared to using brctl. You just add a stanza to your interfaces file like
this:

  auto br0
  iface br0 inet static
  address 192.168.10.1
  netmask 255.255.255.0
  bridge_ports eth1 eth2

That sets up a bridge between eth1 and eth2, with an ip address. If you ifup
br0, the ifupdown scripts handle setting up the bridge for you. It's very
sweet.

Adding firewall stuff includes patches and stuff, but I'd be happy to do a
show and tell sometime if anyone's interested.
