suggestions?

Some iptables work should do the trick.

For example, block access to port 80 and forward another port to
the modem's local port 80.

[SLUG] No modem connection with Red Hat 9

2004-02-08 Thread Trevor
We have installed Red Hat 9 on an Compaq Armada.
All seem to work well except for the modem.
The installer could not recognize the internal modem so used the
generic modem settings.
When we try to connect to a dial up ISP nothing happens.
There are no dialing tones.
I can not seem to find any way to dial manually as I would be able to do
with Remote Access ( I am a Mac convert)
Any suggestions

Thanks

 I'm looking at upgrading a kernel from 2.4.20 to 2.4.24. I'm running a

Since this is a new thing for me (I generally stick within Kernel
releases that come with a MDK distro) I was wondering if someone knew
the general gotchas that might bite me (as it where).

I'm probably a bit late on this. Been away from email for a few days.
Mandrake have got 2.4.25 in their cooker development branch. I'm
currently running 2.6 from the same. I've generally had no problems
upgrading kernels from Mandrake built RPMs. Your /etc/lilo.conf will end
up a bit messier, but that's not an insoluble problem. If I were you,
I'd install this package:

ftp://sunsite.uio.no/pub/unix/Linux/Mandrake/Mandrake-devel/cooker/i586/Mandrake/RPMS/kernel-2.4.25.0.pre7.3mdk-1-1mdk.i586.rpm

You'll also find packages for various 2.6 kernels in that directory
also, but a newer 2.4 is an easier migration path. As always, keep your
existing kernel around when you do this stuff, or at least keep a
working boot disk/cd handy.

I need to do this as a certain dvb package insists I need at least
2.4.23 to run. If it sounds too hard to resolve possible dependency
issues, I'll change tack and try the back releases of the DVB s/w.

So, if it's an RPM package, the other option is just to let urpmi
resolve any dependencies (kernel or otherwise) and not worry about it.

HTH,

James.

[SLUG] Open Source Industry Australia - Mailing Lists Up | Web-Site In First Revision (fwd)

2004-02-08 Thread Grant Parnell - EverythingLinux
Since there's a lot of people on here trying to sell linux solutions to
their clients I feel this post is of interest to some of SLUG and LCON
subscribers.

In fact this is kinda the next level up from a discussion started prior to
the Brisbane LCA which resulted in the Linux Consulting BOF's and the LCON
(linux consultants) mailing list. This mailing list supersedes the lcon
mailing list and I'd encourage switching over. (I started the LCON list so
no probs there). Other alternatives would be the Vendors mailing list of
linux.org.au.

First Revision

Hi There,

We have the organisational foundations of a new national body to represent
open source businesses to the community, the government (state or federal)
and other businesses. The foundations are: a web-site and a discussion
mailing list.

We're now seeking more input on the web-site and into the running of the
organisation. I'm sending you this e-mail because you wrote your name on a
piece of paper at the meeting we held at Linux.Conf.Au 2004 on the Thursday
evening (1).

The web-site is currently hosted at:

 * http://osia.cyber.com.au/

Please visit:

 * http://osia.cyber.com.au/resources

Instructions for joining the OSIA discussion list and the organisation are
held in the second URL I posted.

Please do join and participate - it's been Open Source Victoria's experience
that the ability to say OSV, an industry cluster of 100 companies... is
very effective when speaking to other businesses and the Victorian
Government.

but the problem is, that when i try to follow the instructions posted on

the mails are no longer delivered. exim accepts the messages via port 25
or the command line mail tool and thats all. no further processing is done.
the mainlog of exim4 shows the following line ([EMAIL PROTECTED] is a

defer (-53): retry time not reached for any host
exim is not forwarding the mails to the amavis daemon. i can turn of
amavisd and there is no error message about a rerfused connection in the
exim log. when i remove the amavis config files mentioned in the bug
report above from the exim-config-dirs, evrything is working fine.
amavisd and clamavd dont write anything into there logs - except the
startup messages.
so any ideas?

[SLUG] Trouble finding Linux

2004-02-08 Thread Greg Brennan

I'm interested in installing Linux on my home pc. I've heard thatMandrake is probably the best for a beginner like myself, but I'm having trouble finding a copy of this or any other version. As I would prefer not to order online, I have been scouring newsagents trying to find a copy included with a magazine (as recommended by the SLUG website and others) with no luck. Do you know of any current publications that have this included, and if so, which newsagents in Sydney City might stock it?

[SLUG] [OT] Mail relaying problem

2004-02-08 Thread Alexander Samad
Slighty off topic. I run my own MTA and domain at home and I have
noticed recently that a couple of free email people are rejecting mail
but not sending back any 5xx.

For example I was speaking with a friend of mine at hotmail.com and
everything was wokring fine until about early last week and then I
noticed that we had stopped emailing.

I checked with her and its seem like she never recieved any of the
emails. I come from Telstra's Cable network so its probably on some RBL
list (well it is for AOL).

So work around i now send all my mail via telstra mail-hub. I would
rather not as it has had problems.

But doesn't this mean that hotmail is breaking the MTA rules, if they
are going to not deliver an email shouldn't they give a proper 5xx
return code?

I am only assuming here but I think this is part of Aohell and
Microsoft's antispamming program. If you don't pay them for the
privilige of spamming they will block known source of spam, ie: most

Not freeswan, but super-freeswan - www.freeswan.ca
The feature you are looking for is nat traversal.
afaik there is no deb for it - and you need to recompile the kernel
for nat traversal.
Alternatively you could download the nat traversal patch for freeswan.

Cheers,

Scott

  Hi,

I'm trying to get freeswan running on debian stable. The trouble is
there is a cisco router doing DSL and doing NAT to the debian box,
which also masquerades to another internal network.

Is anyone successfully running freeswan through a router?

  Patrick
