[SLUG] Samba question

2012-05-22 Thread Chris Allen

At work I (and others) log on to a Unix system from a M$ desktop via
Samba.
Every file I we create via this connection has has the access rights
of 744.
We would prefer this be to be 664

I have tried this with create mask and force create
mode but it does not work.
Can any one suggest a solution.

PS. Is there a reference book the explains Samba in simple
and plain language?
Every time I read literature on Samba, it is always written in
complex dialect compubabale that only alpha geeks can understand.
That approach does not help persuade the general public to take up
Samba

[SLUG] Virus Scanner

2011-04-03 Thread Chris Allen
What is the current consensus on using a virus scanner for Linux
(specifically Ubuntu 10.10)?
When I last asked this (about 2 years ago) the general opinion was,
waste of time, Linux did' need it

If scanners are recommended now, which is the favourite?

[SLUG] Starting Apache on Ubuntu 10.10

2010-12-26 Thread Chris Allen
On Ubuntu 10.10, I have started to learn PHP MySQL and XHTML (et al)
with the aid of a book from Wrox.
The import package to install is lamp, a combined package of
everything I need including the apache web server.

The installs appears to have gone well. The next step is starting apache.
The book says I can do this form the menu under System Administration
 Services
Unfortunately I cannot find Services in any of the menus. nor Can I
see it listed a standard option in the Menu maintenance tool.

Can any one advise how to resolve this issue?

Chris Allen

PS
I'm pretty sure I remember seeing Services as a menu option in earlier
versions of Ubuntu

[SLUG] Task bar not working

2010-07-22 Thread Chris Allen

I am using Ubuntu 10.4
Since yesterday my task bar (@ bottom of Gnome screen) has been unworkable.
It is still there but is always black on black. When I minimise a

see no trace of it. It almost impossible to recall it again from the
task bar.

Is there any explanation / fix for this?

[SLUG] IE on Ubunto

2010-02-02 Thread Chris Allen

I have Ubuntu 9.10 installed and use Firefox for browsing the web.

Every so often some one tells me You must look at this but this is

I am not inclined to buy another PC just to look at the occasional web

Is there a simple solution (cheap) to this dilemma?

[SLUG] Slow web access from Ubuntu 9.10

2009-11-20 Thread Chris Allen

I have recently upgraded to Ubuntu 9.10. Since then I've had trouble
reaching some web sites.
I think I saws questions about this a few weeks before my upgrade but I
lost the messages.

As I recall, opinion in the previous thread thought it was trouble
finding the address in the first place.
I think setting had to be changed for DNS (or whatever). The
performance to date supports this notion.
Whatever client I use, Firefox, Thunderbird, Galeon, it seems to spend
a long time trying to find the site in the first place.
Once it has found it the response is very fast. It is a bit faster if
I have visited the site once before (but not much)

I understand I should change a setting in one of files saved in /etc.
Can any one advise what this should be?

[SLUG] Text books on Monodevelopment

2009-08-10 Thread Chris Allen
I want to install MonoDeveleopment on my box (Ubuntu) with the via to
learning C#. I believe this package is also an IDE.
I have cut code for over 20 years in various languages but never with an
ICE. Consequently I am looking for a good test ha explains C# and this IDE.

In the past I, my 1 or 2 of my employers have suggest the I learn C# via
Visual Studio in my spare time at work.
In each case the text book they supplied did not match the version of
Visual studio installed Consequently I wasted more time struggling to
match the text with the IDE than learning the language.

Can anyone recommend a a good text that matches the MonoDevelopment's IDE.
A google search recommended Practical Mono but Dymocks says it's out of
print. Dymocks has several books about Visual Studio but nothing about
Mono.

[SLUG] problem in shell script to merge PDF fils

2009-02-18 Thread Chris Allen

I need to merge several sets of PDF files into a single PDF file
For example want to merge the files

   -rwx-- 1 chris chris 503392 2009-01-24 08:39 beryl callegher
rvcp induction pg1.pdf
   -rwx-- 1 chris chris 909434 2009-01-24 08:39 beryl callegher
rvcp induction pg2.pdf
representing page 1 2 of the same certificate for Beryl Callager.

into the file
   -rw-r--r-- 1 chris chris 1124611 2009-02-15 13:16
beryl.callegher.induct.pdf
representing the whole certificate for Beryl

I have learnt ow to do this via ghost script with the following command

$ gs -dBATCH -dNOPAUSE -q -sDEVICE=pdfwrite
-sOutputFile=beryl.callegher.induct.pdf beryl callegher rvcp ind*

As a one off job that is not too much work, but I need to do something
similar with several other sets of pages 1, 2 3 for different people
/ certificates

To make life easier I created the following shell script

#bash
echo
echo $0
echo $1.pdf
echo \$2\*
echo
echo gs -dBATCH -dNOPAUSE -q -sDEVICE=pdfwrite -sOutputFile=$1.pdf \$2\*
echo
gs -dBATCH -dNOPAUSE -q -sDEVICE=pdfwrite -sOutputFile=$1.pdf \$2\*

and tried to execute same with
   $ ./join.pdfs beryl.callegher.induct beryl callegher rvcp ind

the echo statements produced

   ./join.pdfs
   beryl.callegher.induct.pdf
   beryl callegher rvcp ind*

   gs -dBATCH -dNOPAUSE -q -sDEVICE=pdfwrite
-sOutputFile=beryl.callegher.induct.pdf beryl callegher rvcp ind*

The last of these echo's is the displays the correct command.
If I copy and paste that to the terminal it works fine.
But when the script runs the same command, (just after the last echo)
it fails with the following out put

   Error: /undefinedfilename in (beryl)
   Operand stack:

   Execution stack:
  %interp_exit .runexec2 --nostringval-- --nostringval--

it produces the following (almost empty) file
   -rw-r--r-- 1 chris chris 2160 2009-02-16 20:23
beryl.callegher.induct.pdf

I'll admit to being confused. Can any one explain it?

[SLUG] Update Manger error messages

2008-12-15 Thread Chris Allen
On my Ubuntu 8.04, I keep getting an icon (to right of screen) to say I
should check update
When I run Update manage, it says my system is up to date but hitting
the check button yields the error messages below.

I think it means that it has look for new updates from the CD drive
which implies I should tell the system not to check the CD.

Am I right? If so how do I tell it to ignore said drive.

FWIW, I installed this system from the a CD, a fresh install, not an
upgrade. Is that significant?

[SLUG] Problem with USB ports

I have a Dell system loaded with Hardy Heron.
The screen has 2 USB ports.
With Dapper drake they worked just fine. Every time I plugged in a

I have lost that since my upgrade to Hardy Heron.
With the flash drive I get no response at all. The digital camera
detects that the PC is connected but the PC will acknowledge the camera.

[SLUG] Logical Volume Management.

2008-11-11 Thread Chris Allen

For me, this is a new although I gather it has been around for a few years.

I recently upgraded Ubuntu 6.06 to 8.04.
Before the upgrade I kept getting messages that there was not enough space
(much to my surprise). I deleted old junk and did the upgrade.

NOW, I see the ALL my data is on just one partition of only 4GB. There
are are 2 more (unused and empty) partitions of 4 and 57 GB that I would
like to use.

As I read up on the best way to bring them on board, I stumbled on the
new concept of Logical Volume Management. Sounds very interesting.
However every thing I have read about using it, assumes you are start
with a fresh install. I have seen nothing about converting a current
system to LVM.

Can any one offer some advise or recommend good reading material?

[SLUG] mountinig a USB flash drive

2008-09-22 Thread Chris Allen
A friend at work has installed Ubuntu (hardy heron) on an Asus EEE pc.
When he plugs in a in a USB flash drive, he gets an error message
explaining that he need SU rights to do this. this surprises me because
I have no trouble on my machine.

I said he should see what happens if he logs in as root. He knows
nothing about root and certainly does not know root's password. I
said he should remember being prompted for this in the install. no.

In the install, he created a login only for himself (which works) except
that he cannot use his USB flash drive.

The system is clearly trying to mount the drive when it is plugged in.
It just thinks the that access rights do not allow it.

Any suggestions? (remember that he does not know root's password)

[SLUG] low sound volume

2006-11-05 Thread Chris Allen
I have a Dell work station (about 3 years old) with external speakers
and Ubuntu 6.06 installed. The sound through the speakers is very low.

If I turn the volume up to FULL on the screen AND on the the speakers, I
can hear a music CD at a level JUST load enough to be acceptable if
there is there is no outside interference. For DVD videos I must hold
both the external speakers to my ears (at FULL volume).

We have another PC in the house (MS XP) with external speakers, that my
family use for watching their favorite disks. It's sound can be very
loud indeed. I tested those speakers on my Ubuntu box to see if that
would help. Same problem.

It seams my system is suppressing the sound volume delivered to
speakers. All the GUI screens about sound that I can find say volume is
up FULL and so is the volume Knob on the speakers themselves.

I don't kneed sound often and can't be sure when the problem began. I'm
pretty sure it was not a problem when I first installed Ubuntu in
July/August.

Any ideas?

Error: failure: repodata/repomd.xml from livna-stable: [Errno 256] No
more mirrors to try.

I have defined the repository thus:
# cat livna.repo
[livna-stable]
name=Livna Stable - $releasever - $basedir
baseurl=http://rpm.livna.org/fedora/$releasever$basearch/RPMS.stable/
gpgkey=http://rpm.livna.org/PRM-LIVNA-GPG-KEY-i386
gpgcheck=1

I believe there is something wrong with the way my mirrors are setup
They are define thus:
# grep mirror *
fedora-devel.repo
:mirrorlist=http://fedora.redhat.com/download/mirrors/fedora-core-rawhide
fedora-extras-devel.repo
:mirrorlist=http://fedora.redhat.com/download/mirrors/fedora-extras-devel
fedora-extras.repo
:mirrorlist=http://fedora.redhat.com/download/mirrors/fedora-extras-$releasever
fedora.repo
:mirrorlist=http://fedora.redhat.com/download/mirrors/fedora-core-$releasever
fedora-updates.repo
:mirrorlist=http://fedora.redhat.com/download/mirrors/updates-released-fc$releasever
fedora-updates-testing.repo:mirrorlist=http://fedora.redhat.com/download/mirrors/updates-testing-fc$releasever

[SLUG] installing SWAT

2005-01-05 Thread Chris Allen
I am new.

I renently pruchased a DELL workstation with Redhat pre-installed for
use at home.
I also have 2 old PC's (WIN 98).
I want to use the new WS for all printing.

I understand that SAMBA will let me do this and that I can control same
with SWAT. The doco that I have seen on SWAT (hard copy and the web)
all say
1) check that SWAT is installed (tells how you check this)
2) now that you know it is installed, this is how to use it

There is no mention that it might NOT be installed let alone how to
install same (or where to find it).

From step 1) above I know that SWAT is NOT installed (but SAMBA is).

I have looked at RPM's on my Redhat install disks (and FC2 also).
I see nothing refering to SWAT specifically.

Is it wrapped up inside the RPM for SAMBA? If so, can I install it from
there without upsetting the rest of SAMBA (how)?

Must I download it from WWW (where?)
