[SLUG] SIP/IAX testing...

2007-08-17 Thread Grant Parnell - EverythingLinux
Hi folks... we're moving to a temporary office and so forth in the next 14
days and we've decided to go voip for our phone services. I'm in the
process of trialing several voip providers and in the course of doing so
I've setup guest access to our Asterisk server meaning you can call us
over the net using SIP or IAX protocols.

We're on the following URI's for retail
sip:[EMAIL PROTECTED]
[EMAIL PROTECTED]
iax:[EMAIL PROTECTED]
also sip:[EMAIL PROTECTED] should go to our call redirector menu.

Leave a message after hours just to say it worked if you like... won't
cost ya much ;-)

[SLUG] HELP - need an ISDN card for our fax line

2007-06-27 Thread Grant Parnell - EverythingLinux
Been battling with our NetJet ISDN card and whilst it handles everything
voice quite well the most I've gotten out of a fax is about 50mm of normal
readable page followed by garbage. That's with mISDN, chan_misdn,
asterisk, iaxmodem, spandsp and hylafax. I couldn't seem to get
capi4hylafax working for it. Traverse tells me not to bother, the current
software DSP's just don't work well enough and the card has no DSP.

If anyone out there has SOMETHING which we could buy, beg, borrow or steal
by Thursday 12th of July 2007 that'll co-exist with our existing ISDN card
on the S-bus that can receive faxes I'll be most appreciative of it. Or
tell me what to buy ;-)

Currently it looks like avmfritz and hfcpci cards might be the go.

[SLUG] Attn Friends of Anthony Rumble

2007-03-25 Thread Grant Parnell - EverythingLinux
Anthony has a lot of friends from SLUG and you all deserve to know that
he's been stuck in Intensive care since the 17th of March. Without going
into a lot of detail his symptoms are much like severe pneumonia. He's
been on a respirator and under sedation until yesterday morning and for a
while we were very concerned about whether he'd make it or not.

He's showed significant improvement but now's the time for words of
encouragement or reminders of good times from friends. If you feel like
sending get well cards they can go to PO Box 6262 Silverwater, NSW 1811 or
you can email me a note and I'll make sure he gets them.

If you want to help in another way, we've been finding it tough here at
ELX and if you want to liberate our warehouse stock that's fine too. Be
sure to check it's in stock, buying stuff that isn't just wouldn't help a
lot. Company worries is one thing he could do without right now. We expect
him to be off work for a good few weeks at least.

Finally, I appreciate whomever decides to approve this email going to the
announce list. If it helps, call it a favour for the Ex-president :-)

[SLUG] ComputerBank Meeting Sat 20th?

2007-01-15 Thread Grant Parnell - EverythingLinux
Apologies if you receive this twice, I've bcc'd the LCA delegates mailing
list.

ComputerBank NSW and ComputerBank Sydney are two organisations in need of
repair. Their purpose is to take old computers and either use
environmentally friendly recycling or re-task them and give them to
community organisations (or individuals) who would not otherwise be able
to afford a computer. These organisations are suffering from lack of
volunteers and a proper committee, funds, premises and general
organisation.

I have proposed a combined meeting for the 20th for both organisations. I
originally thought there was still some LCA2007 activities happening on
the Saturday morning. Now there's nothing. So I suggest we go somewhere
central to all who'd like to attend. If you'd like to attend email me
and/or update the LCA wiki http://lca2007.linux.org.au/ComputerBankSydney

Needed to discuss are

a) who's going to be treasurer (for CB NSW) and
b) either paying rent for some warehouse space at ELX or taking over the lease or finding
somewhere else. Roughly 1/3 of the donated equipment is in the ELX
warehouse occupying roughly 10% of the floor space. ELX pays over $30K
per annum for the warehouse rent and frankly NEEDS something to help pay
the rent (other suggestions welcome in private emails).

c) followup with meeting held at Penrith council on December 7th.

SMS 0408 686 201 7am-10pm only (I use the phone for an alarm clock too).

[SLUG] Asterisk with NetJetPCI success

2007-01-10 Thread Grant Parnell - EverythingLinux
Finally... managed to get the NetJetPCI ISDN card we sell to work with
Asterisk 1.4 and chan_mISDN. I've spent the last few hours trying to
understand asterisk's extensions.conf file and doing testing back and
forth between our office & home asterisk servers, SIP devices, our PABX
trunk ports (analogue) and such. Furthermore it plays nicely on the ISDN
TA side with our existing Panasonic PABX still operating in parrallel.

Goodnight!

[SLUG] making a single kernel module

2007-01-08 Thread Grant Parnell - EverythingLinux
I'm trying to re-discover how to build a single module. I once found a
brilliant howto and can't find it again. I'm trying with Fedora Core 6
with 2.6.18. As near as I can tell it's something like this...

pwd

/usr/src/linux-unaltered

ls
arch CREDITSfs Kbuild Makefile REPORTING-BUGS
usr

blockcrypto include kernel mmscripts
configs Documentation init lib net security
COPYING driversipc MAINTAINERS READMEsound

make -C /usr/src/linux-unaltered \

  M=/usr/src/linux-unaltered/fs/ntfs/ modules

make: Entering directory `/usr/src/linux-unaltered'

  WARNING: Symbol version dump /usr/src/linux-unaltered/Module.symvers
is missing; modules will have no dependencies and modversions.

  Building modules, stage 2.
  MODPOST
/bin/sh: scripts/mod/modpost: No such file or directory
make[1]: *** [__modpost] Error 127
make: *** [modules] Error 2
make: Leaving directory `/usr/src/linux-unaltered'

BTW, I'm just using the ntfs module as an example any working example will
do. Of pariticular interest for me is recompiling the capi and mISDN
drivers with a patch I've got for the NetJet ISDN card.

I keep retrying from scratch by copying the source tree from
/usr/src/redhat/BUILD/kernel-2.6.18/linux-2.6.18.i386
Then copying in a .config file from either /boot/config-* or configs/
within the source tree. Then doing make oldconfig and make prepare.

What am I missing here?

I'm even happy to move it out of the kernel tree and follow the external
module build but I think I'll hit the same problem. I wish I could find
that howto again because it worked!

[SLUG] Proposed ComputerBank's AGM

2006-12-06 Thread Grant Parnell - EverythingLinux
Hi, I'm doing my best to get all the people involved in ComputerBank in
this state at least talking to each other. I know a lot of SLUG people
have been interested in the past and it's the only reason I'm CCing that
mailing list. Followups may be discussed off or on the SLUG list but I
request you CC the [EMAIL PROTECTED] mailing list too. To limit
SPAM it's a members only posting thing but I'll approve relevant stuff.

One of the things we badly need to do is organise an AGM for ComputerBank
NSW and also ComputerBank Sydney. I am putting forward by way of
suggestion some dates to hold these AGM's - Sunday the 24th of December or
Saturday the 30th December or Sat/Sun 6 & 7th of January or perhaps after
the close of LCA on the 20th of January at UNSW.

Venues: My place at Concord for a BBQ, ELX Silverwater (as I have said
I'll open up computerbank on 6th & 7th - but that's not yet confirmed).

Other suggestions? Picnic venue, beaches, Clubs whatever.

Geoff, hopefully I haven't overstepped here in organising this but I
vaguely recall you suggesting I organise a time and a place for a meeting.

[SLUG] SQL join to most recent log table entry?

2006-11-07 Thread Grant Parnell - EverythingLinux
I've got a couple of tables itmmaster and suppstock. itmmaster contains
products, suppstock contains log-like entries of product codes and stock
availability and a datetime stamp. I want to do a join to select a bunch
of products along with their most recent stock update entry and was
wondering if that's possible to do in SQL.

example itmmaster data
(id)
'productA'
'productB'
'productC'
example suppstock data
(id),(stockavail),(lastupdated)
'productA','10','2006-09-01 12:00:00'
'productB','9','2006-05-01 12:00:00'
'productA','2','2006-10-01 12:00:00'
'productB','99','2006-11-01 12:00:00'
'productC','20','2006-04-28 12:00:00'
'productC','0','2006-10-01 12:00:00'
'productA','0','2006-10-10 12:00:00'
'productC','1','2006-11-05 12:00:00'

example query idea
select itmmaster.id,suppstock.stockavail,suppstock.lastupdated from
itmmaster left join suppstock on itmmaster.id,suppstock.id where ??? group
or order by something having stockavail>0;

example result set
'productB','99','2006-11-01 12:00:00'
'productC','1','2006-11-05 12:00:00'

Note that productA is missing only because of the having clause. If I had
put stockavail>0 in the where clause that'd return the last time there was
stock which is crap for me so don't suggest that.

Sure, I can do this in the client app but that's inefficient. This crops
up from time to time and I'd like to solve it properly. In this case I'm
tring to identify products in stock with our suppliers last time we
checked.

I happen to be using MySQL 4.X if that makes any difference. Maybe I need
a sub select or do a suppstock join to itself or possibly a stored
procedure if we can upgrade to MySQL 5.X?

[SLUG] Microtouch USB touch screen X/Y axis swapped

2006-10-23 Thread Grant Parnell - EverythingLinux
I just got some LCD touch screens in for a customer and unfortunately I
didn't get the serial ones I was expecting, instead I have the USB ones.

It's pretty cool how it works, just plug it in and start moving your
finger round the display and it just works - Fedora Core 5. Only thing is
the Axis are swapped around and it needs some sort of calibration.

What I want to know is where to start looking to fix it. It appears that
somehow the mtouchusb kernel module loads and this creates some stuff
under /dev/input which ends up working in parrallel with the PS/2 mouse I
already have plugged in. If somebody could explain how this multiple input
stuff works, and can be configured, that would be useful too. The answer
may possibly be in configuration of these bits.

Kernels 2.6.15-1.2054_FC5 (standard) and 2.6.18-1.2200.fc5 (most recent
update) make no difference. xorg-x11-server-Xorg-1.0.1-8,
xorg-x11-drv-microtouch-1.0.0.5-1.2, xorg-x11-drv-mouse-1.0.4-1 are
installed. The man page for the xorg microtouch driver is next to empty,
says it needs to be written. If somebody has their Xorg source unpacked
maybe see if there's anything more useful there but I doubt it.

For the serial version I used the xorg
'microtouch' driver, this USB one works without modifying the xorg.conf
file. I would be happy to modify the xorg.conf file if the USB version
could be coaxed into looking like a serial port.

[SLUG] squid experts - ports 81,8000

2006-07-24 Thread Grant Parnell - EverythingLinux
I'm stumped at the moment and I've been doing firewalls and setting up
squid for years.

My client has an ISP firewall, their own firewall, a proxy on the DMZ and
an internal firewall and wishes to access a couple of http based services
on ports 81 and 8000. Not usually a problem. I have logged into the proxy
server and successfully used the services with lynx so there really isn't
a firewall issue as far as I can tell.

When I set the http_proxy environment variable to http://127.0.0.1:3128/
lynx will use the proxy. When I try this:-

lynx http://www.some.site:81/ it returns a 503 and I can see NO PACKETS
going to the site with tcpdump. Exactly the same with port 8000. The error
page returned by squid reports 503 and permission denied, as does the
access.log I tried the same thing from our proxy server which is the exact
same version and there's no problem leading me to think it's configuration
of squid. I tried setting up squid from scratch again and no luck although
I did not clear the existing cache (it's a busy proxy, don't want to do
that). I will try moving the cache away after hours though.

The response is so quick it's not even trying (as verified by packet
dump). Any thoughts from other experts?

[SLUG] VIA EPIA EN15000 at Sunday's workshop

2006-07-05 Thread Grant Parnell - EverythingLinux
One of my supplier's has been kind enough to let me evaluate one of these
boards and since I was kinda hoping to come along to the SLUG workshop on
Sunday anyway I figured it'd be fun to bring it along. I'll fit it into
another case so we can use a CDROM drive. BYO HDD if you want, it takes
PATA and SATA.

Here's a link to the motherboard info, we've got the 1.5GHz version.
http://www.via.com.tw/en/products/mainboards/motherboards.jsp?motherboard_id=399

Of interest are it's multimedia/TV features. For example it has a HDTV
encoder (can also do regular definition composite video I presume). I
don't have a HDTV myself or a set top box. It's also got gigabit ethernet
and the whole unit it's in isn't much bigger than a white pages volume.

[SLUG] anyone got eprom/flash programmer with PLCC socket

The bios chip is a 39SF020A. If I source the image can I bring the chip to
SLUG tomorrow with a self addressed envelope? Otherwise if you're anywhere
near Silverwater/Concord I could drop by some time.

[SLUG] Fine tuning browser<->plugin response time

2006-03-05 Thread Grant Parnell - EverythingLinux
I have a need to improve the time taken to launch a video presentation
from a web browser in the short term.

The 100MB video file is local (ie on the hard drive of the machine running
the browser. In fact I've tried putting a smaller 20MB video, the mplayer
app, it's libraries, the plugin manager and it's libraries and the html
all in a ramdisk.

The sort of response I'm getting is after clicking the link to the video
it's taking about 1 to 2 seconds to kick in. I am not sure if it's the
browser itself or the plugin manager causing the delay, but if I replace
mplaer with a shell script that logs the command line parameters the delay
is between clicking the URL and the log entry appearing. Running mplayer
directly gives excellent response, ie before the enter key lifts up.

I've tried a few browsers and tried to try a few plugin managers with
varying success (ie got it to run or didn't). It looks like the common
theme is it seems to want to buffer the video when it probably shouldn't.

Of course the long term plan would probably be to have somebody code up
something that'll call mplayer or flashplayer or render a web page on cue.
I've heard gstreamer might be able to do something like this but so far I
thought it was used to process video, not display it. Also not sure if
annodex could be used here - the presentations could be re-encoded.

[SLUG] Dell Perc 4/Di array expansion (afacli)

2006-02-26 Thread Grant Parnell - EverythingLinux
My client had 4 36GB drives in a raid-5 array giving 100GB of space on
their server. I have gotten them to upgrade the drives and replace the
36GB units one by one and rebuild the array with no problems.

Now we want to actually use the extra space..

Not sure if it was a good idea but I've turned the existing container into
a multilevel container with 'container add_level 0' so it now looks like
this:-

AFA0> container list /all
Executing: container list /all=TRUE

AFA0>

Now I just can't get it to successfully carve out more space. Tips on best
way to go appreciated, I don't care if under linux it comes up as /dev/sdb
or whether I can just add another partition to /dev/sda.

AFA0> container create raid5 ((0,0),100M) (0,1) (0,2) (0,3)

(BUS=0,ID=2) (BUS=0,ID=3)
Command Error: container.>

WTF am I doing wrong?
Oh for a more descriptive error message!
I also don't know how to undo the container add_level command!

Of course I would rather not hear "Just backup, start from scratch and
restore." I shouldn't have to do that but will if I absolutely have to.

There seems to be various copies of the afacli command reference about the
place and although fairly comprehensive it's a bit like trying to find the
right man page and there's a lack of good examples.

Took me a while but I'm downloading an x86 zip file... no idea what's in
it, the sourceforge site Oscar pointed out is a bit light on for
documentation. [time passes] Hmm.. looks like some sort of Mac binary with
no source - does have header files though still not much idea of what
platform it's supposed to be for - x86 doesen't really narrow it down. Is
it Windows, MacOSX-X86 or Linux or something else.

[SLUG] Re: Osirix software port required MacOS-X to Linux

2005-12-20 Thread Grant Parnell - EverythingLinux
I've got a client that want's to port this software package from Mac OS-X
to Linux and pay for it.

I checked out 104MB of source code via CVS (I've attached the listing from
/home/grant/packages/osirix) ... Not sure but it looks like some sort of C
code but you compile it within this IDE

http://www.apple.com/macosx/features/xcode/

I couldn't find anything resembling ./configure or a Makefile and the dev
page isn't very helpful unless you're using xcode.
http://homepage.mac.com/rossetantoine/osirix/Index2.html

My Gut feeling... probably cheaper to buy a Mac - except he wants to
deploy many times over, thus if it costs a few grand it's OK. The
alternative would be to buy a Mac and large high quality LCD and the
commercial version of the software and the annual license for each site.
This is less than satisfactory as my client wants some customisation done
to it anyway plus the doctors usually would have multi-head PC's decked
out with a stack of LCD's occupying significant desk space.

Any pointers to who can do this or which company can do this or which
mailing lists to consult appreciated. We can probably commission a
feasability study seeing as it's such a large chunk of stuff.

[SLUG] exporting contacts from Evolution 1.2.2-5

2005-11-17 Thread Grant Parnell - EverythingLinux
Firstly I have a customer who's developed a problem with this
version of Evolution.
 -- quote --
COULD NOT CREATE COMPOSER WINDOW:
UNABLE TO ACTIVATE HTML EDITOR COMPONENT.
PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU HAVE CORRECT VERSION
OF GTKHTML AND LIBGTKHTML INSTALLED.

THE ERROR FROM THE ACTIVATION SYSTEM IS:
CHILD PROCESS DID NOT GIVE AN ERROR MESSAGE, UNKNOWN FAILURE OCCURED

 -- quote --

This is the same machine they've been using for years now and it's
intermittent, they get this when they click on new/reply and before the
message editor window pops up.

So...I have a need to convert someones contact list to something like
Squirrelmail or Thunderbird (assuming it'll run). The contact list seems
to be stored in a Berkley DB version 7 format if that helps - vaguely
remember some way of dumping it but can't find it.

The system is a RedHat 9 box and unfortunately - I'm trying to organise an
upgrade - would have been done sooner if it weren't for the Pulsar ADSL
card in it.

... Just got off the phone... good they'll take the upgrade suggestion,
still means I have to figuire out the export - it's probably easier if I
copy the data to a Fedora Core 4 box running a later evolution and go from
there just to do an export. I'm off the hook for tonight though

This time round I'm going to setup Cyrus-IMAPd for the shared email access
they need. Should be a lotta fun next week.

Following the meeting attendees are invited to share dinner with Dr
Perlman and members of the ISOC-AU Board of Directors at a North Sydney
restaurant.

The Mythology and Folklore of Network Protocols
==

It's natural to assume that network protocol design is a well-known
science, where the designers of today's standards take care to understand
the tricks and pitfalls learned from previous protocols. This talk dispels
this and other myths.

It is intended to be provocative, making people question the things people
assume are true; instructive, giving hints as to how to avoid some of the
problems in future protocols; and inspirational, convincing students that
there are ample opportunities to make contributions.

This talk discusses wrong turns that have been made, such as what
necessitated the invention of bridges, and what caused IP multicast to be
unimplementable. It also talks about how a protocol, even one "proven
correct", can go horribly wrong, such as the unstable ARPANET protocol for
distributing routing information. It talks about "obvious" tricks such as
version numbers that even today protocol designers insist on misusing. And
it covers some of the areas in which research is most needed.

About Radia Perlman
===

Radia Perlman is a Distinguished Engineer at Sun Microsystems
Laboratories. Her work on bridging (spanning tree algorithm) and routing
(robust and scalable link state routing) is fundamental to today's
networks. She has also made significant contributions to security,
including credentials download, key management, authentication and
authorization models, and assured delete.

She is the author of "Interconnections: Bridges, Routers, Switches, and
Internetworking Protocols", and coauthor of "Network Security: Private
Communication in a Public World". Holding about 80 patents, she was named
SVIPLA (Silicon Valley Intellectual Property Law Association) 2004
Inventor of the Year. She has a PhD from MIT in computer science, and an
honorary doctorate from KTH, Sweden's Royal Institute of Technology.

Dr Perlman is visiting Australia for the IEEE Tencon Conference being held
in Melbourne.

[SLUG] Via EPIA MII 1.2GHz Nehemiah + SUSE 10 ssh compatability issue

2005-11-16 Thread Grant Parnell - EverythingLinux
Not sure if anyone else has used SuSE 9.3 or SuSE 10 on a Via EPIA MII
with 1.2GHZ CPU but we have a machine here that's segfaulting when running
ssh-keygen for example but runs fine otherwise. We have tried different
RAM and hard disk and done a memtest86 for days.

What I want to know is:-
A) if anyone's had similar issues with SuSE on our thin client machines
and what they did to fix it and
B) does anyone here hack code under SuSE
or
C) Would anyone like to try to fix it for a credit voucher at ELX?

Here's a matrix of
some of the things we've tried:-

SuSE 10, VIA 1.2GHz Nehemiah = ssh-keygen segfaults repeatedly
same HDD, Intel mobo + P4 = ssh-keygen works just fine
Fedora Core4, Via 1.2GHz Nehemia = Fedora's ssh-keygen works fine
Fedora Core4, Via 1.2GHz Nehemia = chrooted to suse disk, ssh-keygen fails
same as before
Ubuntu breezy, Via 1.2GHz Nehemia = ssh-keygen fine, sshd works
Ubuntu breezy, Via 1.2GHz Nehemia = chrooted to suse disk, ssh-keygen
fails

Its worthy to note that SuSE10 has a lot of i586/i686 optimised stuff
installe and Fedora and Ubuntu do not. The speed of the CPU is variable.
Under SuSE10 and Ubuntu cat /proc/cpuinfo reports 533MHz whilst under
Fedora it reports 1199MHz but this may be a red herring.

When ssh-keygen fails it does this mostly:-
  -- quote --
gripzgw:/ # ssh-keygen -t dsa
Generating public/private dsa key pair.
Segmentation fault
  -- /quote --
but occasionally (1 in 15?) this:-
  -- quote --
Generating public/private dsa key pair.
*** glibc detected *** free(): invalid next size (fast): 0x80023030 ***
Aborted
  -- /quote --

I've done strace under both SuSE and Fedora/Ubuntu using chrooted
environment and it's similar in each case. Therefore it doesen't seem to
be a kernel issue. My guess is either libraries or ssh-keygen itself.

Here's a couple of example strace outputs (large!), they're both pretty
similar except for the last bit:-

[SLUG] Short term Java work - Brookvale

2005-07-05 Thread Grant Parnell - EverythingLinux
ELX has a client in Brookvale that wants some Java work done and they want
to be able to have face to face meetings. This would suit somebody located
in the Northern Beaches region. We can discuss contracting arrangements &
rates offline. We occasionally get requests for other Java work too. I
don't have exact details of this job spec but will ask.

[SLUG] Lightspeed decommissioned

2005-06-26 Thread Grant Parnell - EverythingLinux
Testimony to Digital Electronics Corporation's engineering (AKA DEC, taken
over by Compaq then taken over by Hewlett Packard). The server known as
Lightspeed has given Anthony and the company approximately 10 years of
service, during that time I can think of at least having the power supply
and some drives replaced/added but the Alpha CPU and motherboard which is
a 64-bit 533MHz platform sill has life in it yet.

In the past it has been an image rendering machine, fileserver, CD burning
machine and print server to name a few tasks. Until this morning it still
had our only copy of a lot of stuff we use to make our CDR products.

For quite some time now we've been saying we must get around to copying
the files to a faster++ system so I finally bit the bullet and did that
this morning. By faster I mean faster drives and gigabit ethernet, nothing
wrong with it's internal I/O performance. We'll probably upgrade the old
Redhat 7.1 operating system with the latest Debian Sarge sometime. It's
not intel compatible and Debian's probably the only hope.

[SLUG] Debian ISO's wanted in exchange for stuff

2005-06-14 Thread Grant Parnell - EverythingLinux
EverythingLinux is a bit bandwidth challenged but would like CD ISO's of
Debian 3.1. We only need ISO's 9-14 or if you have the DVD ISO that'll be
fine as well. We'll accept on CDR/DVD or loan us a HDD or DDS2 tape or
some other USB/Firewire media.

In exchange we'll give you a free pressed set when we manage to produce
them (est 2 weeks after we have ISO's) and a Debian T-Shirt.

[SLUG] II Free Software International Conference in Mérida (Badajoz) - International Meeting about Free Knowledge (fwd)

2005-06-14 Thread Grant Parnell - EverythingLinux
Got this message sent to [EMAIL PROTECTED] and figure it's of general
interest. Anyone feel like a tax deductable holiday to Spain?

After poking a bit I think this is the URL for the conference ...

http://2conferencia.gnulinex.org

Unfortunately they've only got the Spanish version up for the moment -
maybe somebody could offer to help translate.

From: II Conferencia Internacional de Software Libre y Conocimiento Libre
<[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
To: Undisclosed-Recipient:  ;
Subject: II Free Software International Conference in Mérida (Badajoz) -
International Meeting about Free Knowledge

Regional Government of Extremadura (Junta de Extremadura) will organize
the II Free Software International Conference in Mérida (Badajoz) -
International Meeting about Free Knowledge

The Regional Governments of Extremadura (Junta de Extremadura) and
Andalucía (Junta de Andalucía) will organize the II Free Software
Internacional Conference in Mérida (Extremadura, Spain) during the days
of October, 25th and 26th 2005 and this will continue in Andalucía
througout the whole 2006.

The aim of this Conference will try to show Free Software as a reality
due to the fact that it has grown to currently become one of the most
successful solutions because it's a solid, powerful and safety solution.
And it's advisable to bet on it when we are building Information
Systems of any organizations.

In the framework of this II Free Software International Conference will
receive the International Meeting about Free Knowledge where the main
representatives of different projects and movements related to the
share of knowledge worldwide will be. During this event, gnuLinEx'2005
will be launched (the brand-new edition of the Extremadura's Operative
System) As well as, there will be loads and loads of activities steered
to empower the relationships among the organizations who already firmly
bet for Free Technologies.

The support given throughout all this time to the use of this kind of
software by the different organizations and institutions, emphasizing
the role of Extremadura and Andalucía as pioneers in the adoption,
support and devlopment of Free Software in the Public Administrations
(Goverments) in Europe, has drawn it of the Scientific and Experimental
Fields, putting it to the reach of the citizens.

Further on the technic aspects, Free Software promotes an attitude above
all, sharing knowledge, and it becomes in an ideal engine for innovation
and development.

>From that point of view, free software enhances a sort of well-known
advantages, such as a support of investigation tool above all. So we can
state that Free Software provides the advance of Science.

In other aspects, free software favours and speeds up the innovation,
due to the fact that its development never starts from zero, there's
always generated knowledge around it that can be well-spent to generate
a new knowledge or just to improve the existing yet favouring, hence,
the innovation process.

Extremadura, in the development of its Information Society Global
Strategy, it's applying free software in all fields (Education,
companies, citizens...) with the firm conviction that the use of this
kind of software on behalf of the Public Administrations (Governments)
it's a question of rational and efficient use of public funds more than
anything, and it's a question of rights as well, since it guarantees
the access of all the citizens to this technology, pure knowledge on
equal terms.

This is the Second Edition of this Intenational Conference who was
launched last year in the andalusian city of Málaga where the audience
was more than 4000 people.

If you don't want to receive more e-mails about the II Free Software
International Conference - International Meeting about Free Knowledge,

[SLUG] IPSEC expert wanted

2005-06-07 Thread Grant Parnell - EverythingLinux
Need to get hold of someone who's experienced at setting up IPSEC,
especially with Sonicwall firewalls. This is for a small job, and includes
training me what's involved.

The platform they'll be using is Debian and I'm suggesting using the
latest release (as of this week) as soon as we've downloaded enough of it.
We'll be selling CD/DVD boxes of it as soon as we can get the images and
send it off to be pressed in bulk.

Currently they have one Debian unstable on X86-64 which is causing grief
with package dependencies so they'll re-image with the 32 bit. The other
is a RedHat AS 2.1 box which they're reluctant to let us touch.

[SLUG] SQL Brain teaser...

2005-06-01 Thread Grant Parnell - EverythingLinux
I'm trying to do some metrics on how long it takes to process an order in
our system based on time between printing the picking slip and bagging the
goods for dispatch. The aim is to determin the maximum performance if we
were to have one guy do nothing but pick & pack orders.

At first glance you might think this would do
select
  round(avg((unix_timestamp(docketdate)
  -unix_timestamp(pickslip_printed))/60))
  as packmins from orders
  where pickslip_printed is not null

But alas that's not the true picture because in reality the events overlap
each other due to operators batching up the pick slips or puting some
aside while issues are dealt with.

Example data set..
select
  ordno,pickslip_printed,docketdate,
  round((unix_timestamp(docketdate)
  -unix_timestamp(pickslip_printed))/60)
as packmins from orders where pickslip_printed is not null
  order by pickslip_printed;
+---+-+-+--+
| ordno | pickslip_printed| docketdate | packmins |
+---+-+-+--+
| ordno | 2005-06-01 14:32:16 | 2005-06-01 14:34:47 |3 |

| ordno | 2005-06-01 16:02:25 | 2005-06-01 16:04:00 |2 |
| ordno | 2005-06-01 16:02:26 | 2005-06-01 16:08:09 |6 |
| ordno | 2005-06-01 16:22:40 | 2005-06-01 16:34:49 | 12 |
| ordno | 2005-06-01 16:22:41 | 2005-06-01 16:36:26 | 14 |
| ordno | 2005-06-01 16:22:42 | 2005-06-01 16:37:52 | 15 |
| ordno | 2005-06-01 16:22:42 | 2005-06-01 16:25:59 |3 |
+---+-+-+--+

See what I mean, between 15:30 and 16:00 there were 9 orders started but
the average will be 12.4 minutes per order by the previous query when in
reality it's 9 orders in 30 minutes due to batching.

Or to put it into perspective, if you add up the packing minutes it's 1.7
times the actual elapsed time :-(

Anybody got any smart ideas for reporting purposes? I don't mind if
performance sucks because I will do it on a replicated database.

Essentially there needs to be a way of grouping orders with a similar
pickslip_printed time. Maybe we could look at pickslip_printed in terms of
5 minute chunks. That doesen't quite work because more orders are started
before all the others are finished.

select
from_unixtime(round(unix_timestamp(pickslip_printed)/300)*300) as
fudgestart,
avg(round((unix_timestamp(docketdate)
-unix_timestamp(pickslip_printed))/60)) as packmins
from orders where pickslip_printed is not null
group by fudgestart order by fudgestart;

For now the most practical thing I guess is to take the lesser of
(max(docketdate)-min(pickslip_printed))/order_count
or the first query I mentioned.

[SLUG] Managing incoming faxes

2005-03-03 Thread Grant Parnell - EverythingLinux
We at EverythingLinux receive faxes using Hylafax and until recently used
to automatically print them on the laser printer. Now we're storing them
in an incoming directory on our terminal server as TIF files. This has
lead to a slight problem with some staff not coping with it, and part of
that is just people being used to seeing them on paper and part is not
having a solution that really covers everything we need to do.

We're OK at this stage with the concept of manually routing faxes to
relevant areas. IE we only have one fax number and we're not doing OCR,
although we could use the fax ID strings people sometimes set in their
machines.

So far I've narrowed my application suite for dealing with faxes down to 3
applications, one in-house one that basically moves the fax file to an
attachment directory for a given order in the system so we can view the
faxes to do with an order by viewing the order in our system. The other
two things are Nautilus/eog and Qfaxreader (called from in-house app as
viewer).

Nautilius (the file manager in Gnome) is a great graphical file manager
and latest versions even show preview images of the faxes, once a fax is
selected to view (eog) I haven't found a way to view anything other than
the first page and it would be nice to see all the other fax attributes.
Later versions thankfully allow rotation too. EOG also has a fantastic
interactive zoom facility with the mouse scroll wheel - try with any image
- very impressive. It's disadvantage is all these bells & whistles make
it quite a big app and load time too long to call as a quick fax viewer. I
should also check on bug reports.

Qfaxreader is a pretty cool fax viewer, shows all the fax attributes, has
sensible rotate buttons, can print although it can't seem to make sense of
our printer queues and therefore can't select which printer to print to
(thankfully prints to default printer). It's light weight & fast to load
but I need to be able to move faxes from one directory to another which it
doesen't do. I'll be filing a bug report or two on it.

Does anyone have any suggestions on either file managers that do faxes
well or fax viewers that do file management ok (copy, move, delete, send
to email, print) - perhaps some perl/python/php libraries to read &
display fax TIF files (or I can convert to PDF). I was reluctant, but will
consider web based stuff - must be able to do rotate & zoom though and I
feel a web interface isn't good for that.

I might start exploring php script options (without using a web server)
if I can find the time.

I guess the next logical step is to be able to edit & re-send faxes -
looking at xfax (about 2 years since last work done on it). EG please sign
& fax back.

[SLUG] Adaptec 1210SA disc corruption?

2005-02-21 Thread Grant Parnell - EverythingLinux
Had a client that has been battling problems and it looks like it might be
the the kernel module being buggy - no problem on Windows. It's a 2 port
SATA RAID controller and so far it looks like a) either it didn't like the
large partition or b) the read-ahead caching or c) the write-back caching.

Setup was 2 drives in RAID-1 configuration on Red Hat 9 system.

Somebody else put the drives in, be buggered if I can get the info on them
from the command line.. seems like I should be using aaccli but I can't
figure out the device string to put. If I try most things (eg "open shit")
it reports device not of the correct type, but "open aac0" reports that
it's missing. Tried loads of other combinations like "0:0:0" "aac0:0:0"
"aac0:1:0"

Bugger it... I'm going home. It's stable enough today, we'd just like to
know "why?".

Subject: [Announce] Sun Regional Delegate Program for linux.conf.au 2005

Hello all.

As with previous LCAs, Sun Microsystems has kindly offered to sponsor
the Regional Delegates Program (RDP) for LCA 2005. For the LCA 2005 RDP,
there will be ten winners: one from each of the Australian states and
territories; a national winner; and a winner representing New Zealand.

Each of these winners will recieve:
  - transport to LCA 2005
  - accomodation
  - professional registration at the conference (including all the
normal things which come with that)
  - special recognition as a RDP winner

Additionally, LCA provides an important mechanism for developers to
network with each other, and the RDP winners will have excellent
opportunities to further their open source projects.

This is the first year that New Zealand has been included in the
competition, which has prompted some changes in how the RDP is being run
this year. The timetable for the RDP is as follows:

  - entrants should draft a 100 word or less description of how the open
source community would benefit from their presence at LCA 2005

  - these should be emailed to [EMAIL PROTECTED], including an
indication of where the entrant lives by midnight, Friday the 18th of
February 2005 [1].

  - the winners will be announced by the end of February and travel
will be arranged.

  - RDP winners attend the conference and have a great time

If a winner has already registered for the conference, then a refund of
that registration will be provided.

We look forward to many interesting entries,
The LCA 2005 team

1: The information about where you live will be used solely for judging
the competition, and will then be destroyed.

[SLUG] GRIC Dialer for Linux - I made one (fwd)

2004-09-08 Thread Grant Parnell - EverythingLinux
Just thought other people might be interested in this if you're travelling
the world with your Linux laptop. I've got a customer who regularly makes
trips to random cities Europe and Asia and as such happened to get global
roaming access through Telstra. What then happens is they refer you to
this windows software called GRICdial which has 2 purposes. 1) has an
updatable database of ISP's around the world you can login via and 2) to
actually setup the connection. My customer is not technical and now uses a
Linux desktop to VNC back to head office.

Subject: GRIC Dialer for Linux - I made one

Attention GRIC/GoRemote technical support staff,

There is now a starting point for Linux and Linux-like users who wish to
use your global roaming services. In response to a customer of mine who
isn't very technical I've come up with simple system that can consult your
database (like the Windows GRIC dialer does) and initiate a dialup
connection to any of the ISP's around the world participating.

The URL for the project is currently here:-
http://www.linuxhelp.com.au/~grant

The software is very generic and as such should work on most varieties of
Linux whether using graphics or just text mode. It just uses ppp, ncurses,
perl and dialog packages. It's also CPU architecture independant as it's
just text and script files.

Please consider adding this information to your technical FAQ at this web
location:-
http://www.goremote.com/pdfs/faqs_tech.pdf

With a little further work it's probably worthy of including in your
download section. Given a few screenshots and so forth it would be
possible for ISP's helpdesks to understand how it works without actually
having to run it, therefore it could be said that Linux is now a supported
operating system.

To restrict to the interface I wanted I set the IP in the
DAEMON_OPTIONS(`Port=smtp,Addr=127.0.0.1, Name=MTA') in the
sendmail.mc.listen.kavscanner file (this setting is the default for
Fedora/RedHat).
For the other instance I just changed the IP to the external interface.

Hmm... maybe I'll just install spamassasin as well, can't hurt!

FWIW I tried setting up the kavscanner/sendmail on port 250 but then I
couldn't figure out how to get the other one to send to port 250.
I even tried
'iptables -A OUTPUT -d 127.0.0.1 -p tcp --dport 25 -j REDIRECT
--to-ports 250'
but that kept giving me 'invalid option' or something like that (ie I
think REDIRECT doesen't work in the OUTPUT chain to spite the
documentation).

I tried setting smarthost even to localhost... that was a mistake. I found
FEATURE(`nullclient',`localhost') sounds like it should do the job but
doesen't. It just drops it into /var/spool/mail instead. I suspect the
documentation on that feature was a bit off or not what I was trying to
do.

About the best I got so far was the sendmail on 192.168.1.4 trying to send
to localhost and getting 'error mail loops back to me (MX problem?)'
suggesting it was trying to send to an instance of itself rather than the
other instance - oh and in no way does a DNS or /etc/hosts lookup for
'localhost' point to 192.168.1.4. Therefore I can't see how trying to get
it to send to 'localhost' stuffs up unless it's hardcoded or something. I
don't have control of their DNS.. but I might try installing my own and
setting up MX records for localhost2 or something.

It's all a bit academic at the moment, went to work on it today and
they've changed the firewall on me. I'm on leave starting next week so
it'll be 2 weeks before I get back to it. The server's not in production
yet... their old one is still crawling along with a different mail setup
entirely.

[SLUG] sendmail to sendmail on same machine

2004-05-28 Thread Grant Parnell - EverythingLinux

The principle is this
[inbound email to test@.com.au]
|
| 192.168.1.4:25
[sendmail.cf.listen.milter-sender]
|
| 127.0.0.1:25
[sendmail.cf.listen.kavscanner]
|
| lmtp
[sendmail.cf.cyrus]
|
| cyrusv2
[/x/imap/t/user/test/*]

Now... telnet to 127.0.0.1 port 25 and it works, does the virus scan and
delivers to cyrus mailbox so that half's just fine.
I've been frustrated for the last several hours trying to figure out ways
of getting the sendmail daemon listening on ip 192.168.1.4 to forward
succussful messages onto 'localhost'.

Alternatives may be using another MTA that has the features of
milter-sender, such as postfix. I haven't looked into that, I'd imagine it
shouldn't be a problem to interface with cyrus but what I don't know is if
it's going to be a similar problem. Alternately... I could use BOTH!

[SLUG] wierd cron.daily clash AKA autorpm gotcha?

2004-02-12 Thread Grant Parnell - EverythingLinux
Just doing some post-crash detective work on our web server and have
attributed it to a possible race condition combined with not enough swap
space. The symptoms were the memory usage and load went through the roof
and eventually the kernel starts killing off processes at random to fix
the situation.
(avg 116 vs 0.4 normally) - nice of sendmail to report that in the logs
:-)

in /etc/cron.daily there's an 'rpm' and 'autorpm' job - autorpm is not
supplied with RedHat but's a standard add-on we typically use for keeping
systems up-to-date (instead of the official up2date utility - or apt-rpm).

cron.daily kicks off at the usual 4am and starts autorpm which has

# Start AutoRPM and tell it to wait up to 2 hours before actually
# looking for updates (backgrounds the process to avoid delaying
# other cron jobs)
/usr/sbin/autorpm --notty "auto --delay=7200" &

Now I looked in the code and to see what they mean by 'up to 2 hours' and
yeah, it's a random time between 0 and 2 hours effectively.
Also kicked off at 4am is the rpm job which has
rpm -qa --qf '%{name}-%{version}-%{release}.%{arch}.rpm\n' 2>&1 \
| sort > /var/log/rpmpkgs

Now as you know... rpm doesen't like 2 things accessing it's database at
the same time (at least writing it)... which may possibly explain this
email:-
***
AutoRPM 3.3 on started Fri Feb 13 04:02:02 EST
2004

Delaying 4476 seconds...
Reading Auto-Ignore list... Done.

Comparing to locally installed RPMs

ERROR: rpm -qa is hanging! Running rpm --rebuilddb to fix...

I'm thinking maybe we'll just comment out the line in autorpm which calls
--rebuilddb and just deal with it manually if it ever occurs. Also, maybe
autorpm can possibly check if other things are accessing the rpm database
and/or by default delay a minimum of 10 minutes or something.

Since there's a lot of people on here trying to sell linux solutions to

In fact this is kinda the next level up from a discussion started prior to
the Brisbane LCA which resulted in the Linux Consulting BOF's and the LCON

mailing list and I'd encourage switching over. (I started the LCON list so
no probs there). Other alternatives would be the Vendors mailing list of

Hi There,

We have the organisational foundations of a new national body to represent
open source businesses to the community, the government (state or federal)
and other businesses. The foundations are: a web-site and a discussion
mailing list.

We're now seeking more input on the web-site and into the running of the
organisation. I'm sending you this e-mail because you wrote your name on a
piece of paper at the meeting we held at Linux.Conf.Au 2004 on the Thursday
evening (1).

The web-site is currently hosted at:

Please visit:

Instructions for joining the OSIA discussion list and the organisation are
held in the second URL I posted.

Please do join and participate - it's been Open Source Victoria's experience
that the ability to say "OSV, an industry cluster of 100 companies..." is
very effective when speaking to other businesses and the Victorian
Government.

[SLUG] Wierd hardware / NFS issue?

2004-02-02 Thread Grant Parnell - EverythingLinux
Head scratching time for the technical gurus

Headline: NFS client locks when second NIC inserted but not even module
loaded.

I've got a test rig setup with 2 via EPIA V 5000 motherboards. These come
with an on-board nic and a PCI slot in which I'm inserting the second NIC.
The second nic has a crossover going to the other system which is exactly
the same, they're on 10.0.0.1 & 10.0.0.2. All other hosts on 192.168.1.x
LAN. I test with the following:-

# mount -t nfs -o ro lightspeed:/export/mirror /mnt/mirror
{fine always}
# ls /mnt/mirror
{fine first few times}
# ls /mnt/mirror/9/i386/(basically a lot of files)
{NFS times out in some situations - everything but NFS works fine}

Combo tried Result
no card insertedworks fine
2nd nic inserted, up, pings, main MTU lowered NFS hang
2nd nic inserted, up, pings, nfs rsize lowered NFS hang
2nd nic inserted, up, pings NFS hang
2nd nic inserted, module not loaded NFS hang
different type of 2nd nic inserted, module not loaded NFS hang
USB card inserted instead works fine

I can't find anything obvious in the BIOS settings. Happened with stock
RedHat9 kernel so I upgraded to kernel-2.4.20-28.9 and nfs-utils-1.0.1-3.9
with no difference. In each case where a card was inserted, the card works
fine too. Perhaps I'll try NFS through the 2nd NIC. I should point out
that whilst NFS is stuck, I can copy the directory off the same server
using ssh or rsync with ssh just fine. I get similar issues whilst PXE
booting redhat-rescue, gets up to the point of NFS.

If it's a hardware problem why does it only stuff up NFS? I get exactly
the same behaviour on either of the two machines.

Anyway... although it's annoying it's not critical to what I'm trying to
do. I am concerned that it might be a hardware issue and stuff me up later
on in this project.

Well that's interesting... I guess I've found the odd few rich ones or
they're breaking the license agreement. Basically an hour or so after
posting I found more 'test servers' but I'm not about to go blabbing about
them. We might end up setting up office at our client's site just to get
the task done. That's a real pain though because Anthony finds it hard to
escape the office for more than a couple of hours at a time.

[SLUG] Any test ICA/Citrix servers?

2003-11-09 Thread Grant Parnell - EverythingLinux
We have a need to test a thin client setup with a Citrix server for a
client of ours. I was wondering if anybody knows of any internet
accessable servers to test with, preferably free of charge. I can't seem
to find any on www.citrix.com, have had miniscule success searching on
Google - found companies offering their services to registered clients
basically.

Alternately, if anyone running Citrix out there would be prepared to setup
a demo account and punch our IP through the firewall that'd be really nice
we could possibly do a bit of barter ;-)

FWIW we know the client software works, we just need to tidy up the config
stuff and repeatedly reboot & test the connection, we don't care too much
about what apps are there.

2003-10-15 Thread Grant Parnell - EverythingLinux
I've often been frustrated when dealing with multiple ppp interfaces
knowing which is which and have decided to investigate. The following
applies to RedHat systems but probably can be adapted to others easily
enough.

The DEVNAME in the /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-ppp0 file is the
key.

This translates to "/sbin/pppd linkname DEVNAME ipparam DEVNAME"
the linkname results in a file /var/run/ppp-DEVNAME.pid which
conveniently contains the process id and on the next line the device
actually used eg:
12950
ppp1

According to the pppd man page these files may turn up in /etc/ppp on some
systems.

So in a firewall script or something if you're set DEVNAME to LINE1
LINE1_IF=`cat /var/run/ppp-LINE1.pid|grep ppp`
LINE1_IP=`/sbin/ifconfig $LINE1_IF | awk '{print $2}' | awk -F: '{print
$2}'`

Now also the ipparam bit on pppd boils down to the $6 parameter in the
/etc/ppp/ip-up and /etc/ppp/ip-down scripts.

rp-pppoe also writes /var/run/pppoe-adsl.pid, pppoe-adsl.pid.pppd,
pppoe-adsl.pid.pppoe, pppoe-adsl.pid.start and of course the pppX.pid
device file.

Of course if somebody could explain to me why you can't specify the actual
interface name such that you can arbitrarily bring up a single interface
'ppp9' for example with /sbin/ifup ppp9 I'd love to know.

[SLUG] Automated secretary anyone?

2003-09-10 Thread Grant Parnell - EverythingLinux
Below's just some thoughts I had last night inspired by the fact I can
spend a day at the office being really busy but can't remember where the
time's gone and often forget important stuff. Like a lot of small
businesses we can't afford a secretary to keep us in line. Does anybody
have a clue if there's something like this already? It's not exactly
something I can easily think up a search for. Although I tried and found
mostly Windows stuff that wasn't really close enough to what I had in
mind.

Automatic time tracker / secretary
==

Keeping tabs on you
---
* pops up and asks what you're doing every 15 mins to which you give a one
or two word response EG "phoning Tom"
* if no response checks least idle terminal every half hour & sends
message to it
* if terminal idle for 2 hours but email gets sent, send an email
* email says "what are you up to?" to which you reply with a short
explanation
* if it can't find you, when you're back it asks "what were you up to
between xx and yy time?"
* perhaps impliment a jabber bot
* perhaps in future provide an SMS gateway

Reminding you
-
* things scheduled for certain times & dates should pop up when due and/or
when the reminder time is set.
* Frequency of reminders based on how responsive you appear
(eg, no point telling you something's on in 5 minutes if you're not
listening).

Summaries
-
* Should provide you a timesheet of what's happened each day which should
be filled in & returned.
* Should provide weekly & monthly timesheet/reports

Ingredients
---
SQL database for schedules & event logs
A reminder daemon - lets you know what's on
A contact daemon - keeps track of the best way to contact you and provides
a communication channel for other programs
A command processor - when info comes back from the contact daemon it must
be interpreted either in the context of a reply or a new command.

EG You should be able to send an email to the secretary with something
like "Schedule meeting 9am with Tom" and it will know that since it's 10am
at time of writing you mean the next working day and the meeting's at your
office. If it doesen't understand it can email you some examples and ask
for clarification.

[SLUG] My MySQL mistake & how I recovered

2003-07-22 Thread Grant Parnell - EverythingLinux
# mysql mysql
> update user set password=('hello') where user='root';
> quit
# mysqladmin reload
# mysql mysql --password=hello
ERROR 1044: Access denied for user: '[EMAIL PROTECTED]'
to database 'mysql'

At this point I pondered and worked out I should have used
password=password('hello'). The prospect of finding a password that
encrypts to the word 'hello' was now rather daunting. I had to find
another approach... I believe there is a way to reset the root password
with a special command but for some reason I decided to be a bit more
creative.

# /etc/init.d/mysqld stop
# cd /var/lib/mysql
# cp -a mysql/user.* test/
# /etc/init.d/mysqld start
# mysql test
> update user set password=password('hello') where user='root';
> quit
# /etc/init.d/mysqld stop
# cp -a test/user.* mysql
# rm -f test/user.*
# /etc/init.d/mysqld start
# mysql mysql --password=hello
> select * from user;

Whew! success. This relies on the fact that by default, under RedHat at
least, there's a table called 'test' which everybody has access to without
a password. I suppose this is something to consider if you need a bit more
security. Some would argue "once you've got root what else is there?".

Re: [SLUG] RPM spec building... HELP!

It's weird how it says there's nothing to do for certain directories.
You're not using NFS for any of these directories are you? Have a peek in
the resulting BUILDS directory stuff. Also /usr/src/pc/BUILD? WTF? has
somebody messed with the spec file?

Re: [SLUG] Cron + CD-R wierdness

2003-07-11 Thread Grant Parnell - EverythingLinux
In addition to Tony's excellent suggestion...

It's possible for certain things to go haywire when there's no terminal
attached. It might help if you do this in the crontab entry

0 19 * * 1-5 /etc/cdbackup /tmp/log 2>&1
This isn't guaranteed though.

Another gotcha is the lack of environment variables you might be expecting
(eg PATH, HOME). Setup a simple cron job that does 'set>/tmp/envstuff' and
compare with the result of 'set' from your command prompt.

Re: [SLUG] Win4Lin & MYOB - is it really this bad?

2003-07-11 Thread Grant Parnell - EverythingLinux
Just out of curiousity, are you using the vnet setup or the other one? I
think for this situation the Win4Lin would probably benefit from having
it's own IP address. At least it's something to try to benchmark. A quirky
alternative might be to smbmount the relevant directory on the server
itself but I'm thinking this won't help since it's the Window's locking
behaviour you're trying to trigger but you never know till you try.

[SLUG] LDAP service startup problem

2003-07-10 Thread Grant Parnell - EverythingLinux
I've got a client who's got a SuSE server and basically the slapd daemon
is running, no problems reported in the logs yet it is not listening on
port 389. Has anyone had a similar problem on any platform or version of
Linux?

In this case the relevant errata for the SuSE product has been applied but
it didn't change the outcome.

Starting manually with
/usr/lib/openldap/slapd -d 255 -h ldap://192.168.10.10
produces a lot of info, here's the relevant bit:-

@(#) $OpenLDAP: slapd 2.1.4 (Mon Mar 24 14:47:47 UTC 2003) $
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/usr/src/packages/BUILD/openldap-2.1.4/servers/slapd

daemon_init: listen on ldap:///192.168.10.10:389/
daemon_init: 1 listeners to open...
ldap_url_parse_ext(ldap:///192.168.10.10:389/)
daemon: initialized ldap:///192.168.10.10:389/
daemon_init: 1 listeners opened
slapd init: initiated server.
slap_sasl_init: initialized!
bdb_open: initialize BDB backend
bdb_open: Sleepycat Software: Berkeley DB 4.0.14: (October 16, 2002)
reading config file /etc/openldap/slapd.conf

It then goes on to parse the config file & do database stuff & so forth,
I'm not sure I should be giving out all that info but it ends with:-

slapd startup: initiated.
bdb_db_open: dc=in,dc=artedomus,dc=com
bdb_db_open: dbenv_open(/var/lib/ldap)

Of course since I stared it in debug mode I had to kill it off from
another terminal with a kill -9.
