Try using backports -- they at least have 1.0 available. (presumably

Re: [SLUG] Network Operating Systems Comparisons Win2000 Dual Boot

are studying and using but I would like to present all the available
options especially given the cost effectiveness of Linux.

As previously mentioned, google is your friend.

Also trying to set up dual boot for Win2000 RH7.1, I'd like to use NTFS
but lilo doesn't seem to load no matter what order I load them. I have
gone through the archives there appears some issue with the NTFS system,
suggestions welcome.

Being able to boot windows 2000 is an altogether seperate issue from NTFS
support under linux. Lilo should boot it just fine.
Your lilo entry should look like this, though:

other=/dev/path/to/win2k/partition
 label=win2000
 optional

For instance, mine looks like this:
other=/dev/sda3
 label=win2000
 optional

You will have some trouble with windows 2000 if you aren't installing to
the first disk in the machine. Or, there's another operating system on the
box. Win2k will want to put it's bootloader components on the first
partition. This is easily resolved by a) installing win2k first and/or b)
unplugging any irrelevant disks. If you do end up installing the bootloader
components to another partition (ie: win9x), simply change the partition
entry in other= above to the one win9x resides on.

Re: [SLUG] intra-internet gateway?

2002-01-21 Thread Matthew Moor

Actually, I thought he was looking for help in understanding how a firewall
works with a dialup link.
He sounds like he's read a bit already about how to configure iptables for
filtering and masquerading.

Bill, linux will work just fine with a standard serial modem. When a ppp
connection is established, the interface pppN (probably ppp0 in your case
-- presuming you don't have more than one ppp link, eg, adsl or isdn) is
brought up. You can apply rules to this interface just the same as you can
any other interface. I believe Rusty's NAT HOWTO on the Netfilter
(iptables) site (netfilter.samba.org) has a little on this.

An example rule (in iptables) might look like this:
# iptables -t nat -A POSTROUTING -s 192.168.0.0/24 -o ppp0 -j MASQUERADE

This rule would masquerade connections from an internal class C
(192.168.0.0 - 192.168.0.255) going out over interface ppp0.

If I recall correctly, iptables will just ignore this rule if ppp0 doesn't
exist at a given moment.

So all you need to do to setup a gateway with a serial modem is get the
modem dialling out and establishing an internet connection (ppp session) in
the way that you want (Do you want it dial-on-demand, a permanent
connection, etc) -- there are numerous tools to do this, not just the
infamous pppd -- and then apply some ipchains or iptables rules to
masquerade, and/or firewall.

HTH,

Matt.

Let me know off the list if you get stuck.

Bill's looking for a utility to handle it for him - doesn't Red Hat have a
firewall/masquerading tool (that is not at the system administrator's level
ala ipchains/iptables)?

Re: [SLUG] Mysterious busy-ness with Windows Internet + Evolution/Mozilla/Ximian woes

2001-11-02 Thread Matthew Moor

Got good, up to date, virus protection?

The only time I've seen this happening was with a PC infected with a trojan
horse.
A simple netstat -a *should* let you know what's going on.
Also, have a look at the running processes, and see what you don't
recognise.

If you're feeling really paranoid, gateway it with a through a linux box and
use tcpdump or IPTraf to have a look at the packets/connections.

Re: [SLUG] hd head crash = what, exactly?

2001-06-30 Thread Matthew Moor

That doesn't sound like a head crash. More like the drive motor has locked
up (bearings, or whatever). So you may not be completely SOL.
2600 had a guy from a data recovery company talking about this at their last
seminar (might be worth checking out. I think they have audio of the talks
on their website.)

Suggestions were/are, give the drive a light bang (on the side), shake it,
either side to side, or in a circular motion, or spin it around (tape it to
a chair, spin?).

**Disclaimer: I've Never Done Any Of The Above. I dunno what it'll do to
your drive, but, in theory, it should help, unless it was a head crash, and
you're planning to send it to a data recovery company (in which case, it'll
probably screw it up more than it already is). :)

Re: [SLUG] Notification of Internet Violations

2001-06-22 Thread Matthew Moor

Oh Geez. This is classic. :)

From their FAQ:

Do people ever get wrongfully added to your databases?
One complaint that people often have with us is that they were added to our
databases in error. We have come to the conclusion that this is rarely the
case.
People often claim that they were added by their friends as a practical
joke. Now, consider this scenario. A young man, let's call him Ray, notices
that his friend, let's call her Jody, has been acting a little strange. She
is much more aloof around family and friends, and she has been spending a
lot more time at the computer. These are clear, tell-tale signs that Jody is
exploring illegal pornography on the Internet. Out of fear for the safety of
both Jody, and the Internet as a whole, Ray reports Jody as an offender and
she is added to our database.
Imagine now that Jody discovers that Ray has added her. She confronts him,
and what does he say? Out of the fear that she may get angry, and possibly
violent with him, he says he added her as a practical joke. You see? Even
though Ray added Jody to the database out of genuine concern for the
Internet, Jody has been led to believe it was simply a practical joke.

From About Net Authority:

The Net Authority is a group of individuals who have taken it upon
themselves to govern the Internet. We have waited patiently and in vain for
the World's governments to put their resources together and develop a
standard set of guildelines for what material should be permitted on the
Internet, and what should not. We have prayed without answer for a
centralized agency with the power and the means to stop crimes against
humanity on the Internet. The time for waiting has ended. Clearly we, the
people, must take matters into our own hands. Net Authority writes those
guidelines. Net Authority is that agency.

[SLUG] ATA66 on 2.2.19

2001-05-16 Thread Matthew Moor

Hi all,

Just wondering if anyone has been running Andre Hedrick's ATA66 patches on
2.2.19, and what their opinions of them are.

I've got a box I want to use as a file server (amongst other things) on my
home network, with a 30gb 75GXP. Unfortunately, the onboard IDE sucks, so
I'm thinking I'll use a promise ATA66 controller. The data I'll be putting
on it is fairly important to me, and although it'll be backed up, I won't
like seeing it corrupted/destroyed. :-)

I'm also considering using ReiserFS on the drive. (seems stable enough on
2.2.x?)

Suggestions, thoughts, and comments on any of the above would be much
appreciated.

Cheers,

Matt

Re: [SLUG] (OT) Optus performance

I'm on Dingoblue, and it's painful.. Dialled into an an ozemail account I
keep lying around at the moment. Everything just upped and died about 2
hours ago. Everything beyond internal stuff was (is) screwed, DNS server
excepted (down, or at least having trouble resolving external stuff). The
trace routes I did indicated that I was even dropping packets on optus'
internal network, as well as being routed all over the country.

A mate had a theory that the network admin was drunk and pissing on the
routers, and right now, I'm inclined to agree. ;-)

I've imported a fair amount of hardware from the states. Just parts, CPUs,

have good information about this stuff on their web site, and respond well

I was under the impression that you're not going to get hit hard (GST at

Have a look at USPS. They are quick, and inexpensive. Usually around half
