[SLUG] On connecting a printer.
I have a printer, a Brother H5340 OD. In past editions of Ubuntu, I managed to connect it to the laptop via a USB port. However, not this time. I assume that when I installed the latest Ubuntu, the printer driver was saved and lurks somewhere in the machine. Details: Toshiba Sattelite A660, running Ubuntu 11.04 64-bit version. [SLUG] A Library android.
Im a Librarian. The Department would like a stocktake. Our barcode reader can recognise whos holding it. If its my assistant, it will work; if its me, it sulks. Id like to: (a) scan some barcodes, (b) stack them and (c) download them to the Departments system (which, for any fellow Librarians, is OASIS). The barcode reader uses, I assume, Bluetooth. Id be just as happy to download the numbers to a file. Theres been some discussion lately on android applications that can manage some of this. Has anyone any experience (or knowledge of) an application that can do all? Any help in defeating that wretched barcode reader will be acknowledged in the New Years Honours list. [SLUG] A reliable crossword compiler.
Can anyone recommend a simple crossword compilerthat will work on Ubuntu? The one provided by the Department is as slow as a wet week and provides crosswords unworthy of the name. Ideally, I'd like to use a list of, say, fifteen surnames (ie., no clues) and it get on with fitting them into a grid (generated also by the program). Tried Sourceforge. Re: [SLUG] Re: Dell Laptop with pre-installed Linux
I was the one starting the thread on buying a new laptop. You might have a look at the latest electronic Choice. They compared a stack of laptops using parameters not normally considered by most buyers (number of ports and what type, power consumption, screen glare etc. Something else that came up was that Dell, although pretty good, are not perfect, in that others (HP, eg., from memory) have kernels more oriented towards Linux. You might also try a Dogpile search for laptops, Linux and compatability. Hope this is useful, William Bennett. Re: [SLUG] On buying a laptop.
I've made a mistake here. Choice recommended a Toshiba Satellite L550 (I know, but it was sent from work--I've had a chance to look at the article at home.) Checked also with the Toshiba Home page--the L550 has been discontinued, although from the number on offer when you do some comparative shopping, you'd never guess. And I'd still like to buy one. I remember some members of SLUG trying to extract from the vendor the price of the Microsoft installation that came with the computer and that they had requested be removed, or not installed. There was much indignation at this. Is it still the case that Microsoft installation is mandatory? I'll mention also something that Choice was none too pleased about: some computers give you the choice of a 32-bit or a 64-bit version of the operating system. Fair enough, but the choice becomes permanent, because the installation you *didn't* choose is destroyed. This probably wouldn't affect Linux users. Mail both to Fred. Fred inspects the pdf document and edits the Word document. 4. Fred mails the Word document back to me and I make the changes to the LaTeX document. Number 2 is what's the matter. Is there a quick and dirty way to do this? It doesn't have to be marvellous, just accurate wrt text. [SLUG] A LaTeX problem, with Word.: not quite there.
The pdfpages package works. I've exported the relevant document as a .pdf and used \includepdf(word-appendix.pdf} in the LaTeX document. All Ok, as long as I stay in [draft]. When I try the full document, I receive Page Group detected which pdfTeX can't handle. My first reaction was to amend the command thus:--- \includepdf[15-20](word-appendix.pdf) (It's a 20 page document) and work myself backwards until I find what's stopping pdfLaTeX. Many thanks again for the help. Amos was right. alt-F10 works to enlarge the screen and still stay in business. I'll still file *something* with the distro people. They may be aware of the situation. If they're not it doesn't look like it would be difficult to put something in. [SLUG] That problem with Evince.
Many thanks to those who posted suggestions. I solved the problem by accident (nothing surprising there). The solution is this:--- when I go to the command line, I use F11 to enlarge the display. That's what's the matter: if I *don't* enlarge, then evince filename.ps works. If I do, then no dice. If I click on the desktop icon of the .ps file, then evince works. Obviously, it's taken offence to F11. I'd like to report this to someone. Any suggestions? [SLUG] A LaTeX question
I'm helping a student set a paper in LaTeX and I'm having trouble with BibTeX. The trouble is that she has to use the American Psychology Association style. As one who uses only the Harvard system, I am trying to keep it simple, if only to broaden my own education. Normally, I would simple include \bibliographystyle{apa} in the preamble, then \bibliography{ReferenceList} towards the end of the essay (TLC suggestion) and the reference would be ReferenceList.bib following the form in TLC. But something's not working. It occurs to me that apa.bst might not be part of the standard LaTeX package (I can't find it, if it is). Can anyone help? I'd appreciate any suggestions. [SLUG] Further to logging the solution to a simple error.
Well, this was the error:--- I was using the laptop and suddenly I noticed that some keys were putting numbers on the monitor. I rebooted: all was well with the password, no numbers. However, the problem promptly re-appeared. I posted a request for help. I was told that this problem had been seen before and had been attributed to (a) a dud section of the hard drive, or (b) *somehow* changing to one of the more exotic keyboards. I re-installed the distro. Problem not present, at least for a couple of weeks. Then it re-appeared. It was when I sat back in disgust that I noticed the solution: tichy little numbers on the bevelled edge of some keys. I had inadvertently hit the Num Lock key whilst typing. There is no separate number keyboard on the laptop and some alphabet keys in the North East area are assigned on hitting Num Lock. So I thought I'd post it somewhere; I don't mind being considered a prune: the problem flumoxxed more experienced people than me. So where to post it? It's more a laptop/small keyboard problem than anything else. Many thanks to those who replied to my original enquiry. I asked around on the business of the modem's being snooped. Nobody seems quite sure. The general consensus of opinion was that, as the modem used the broadband in the manner of a mobile phone, it *couldn't* be snooped. And if it couldn't be snooped, there was no need of encryption. [SLUG] Problem with an upgrade to Hardy.
Just recently I upgraded from Feisty to Hardy Heron. It was suggested that I do this in two stages: first to Gutsy Gibbon and thence to Hardy. I'd upgraded to Gutsy before, but had been so cheesed off with the problems that I returned to Feisty. It may have been a grade behind Gutsy, but at least it worked. The first jump, to Gutsy, was completed and I noticed a problem that I encountered before with Gutsy. I use a docking station and whilst the background filled the Samsung monitor, the rest of the Desktop was the same size as the laptop's monitor. I assumed that this would probably be one of the problems fixed with the move to Hardy and resolutely pressed onward. The upgrade to Hardy was completed. The monitor problem had changed: now there is no picture whatsoever on the Samsung and it is indicating that nothing is emanating from the docking station. So what's gone wrong? I'll pass this on to whoever's interested. I posted a problem recently re not being able to have font changes take---these were desktop and other changes available through Feisty Fawn Font. Well, it now turns out that they did take, but were unnoticeable. I had access to a laptop and a PC, both with separate monitors, a Samsung and a BenQ. I'd made the changes on the Samsung and I wanted to emulate them on the BenQ. Well, they took on the BenQ, but you'd never notice; thus, a 10 -- 12 point change stuck out on the Samsung. On the BenQ I didn't notice any change at all. So, I upped it to 16 point. Then it was obvious---it was about the same size as the font on the Samsung. Ditto the other changes: they had to be exaggerated. So, there you have it. Note I'm not knocking the BenQ, which seems OK. Others might find my experience helpful. [SLUG] Making changes take.
So I've installes Feisty Fawn. I wanted to change the fonts and followed the book---System/Preferences/Font and changed the settings. They didn't take immediately, so I logged out/logged in. They didn't take then, either. So I shut down and then restarted. Same result. In all cases I checked the fonts to see if the default had been restored. No, the new settings were in place, they just hadn't taken. Am I missing something? [SLUG] Formatting problem.
I have a thumbdrive/memory stick that has to be used in computers running Windows and Ubuntu. Windows recognises immediately when it's in the USB port. Ubuntu doesn't even acknowledge its existence. I'm told it's the formatting. Is there a common format that can be used, even if it's less than optimal for either system? Re: [SLUG] Crossword Compiler, I think finis.
Again, many thanks to those who sent suggestions for a crossword compiler that would work under Linux. I'm somewhat bemused. My original search was done via Dogpile, a meta-search engine that found only arccc, the one with iffy source code. I've since abandoned Dogpile. [SLUG] Crossword Compiler, I think finis.
Many thanks to those who posted or E-mailed me, it was greatly appreciated. With the help of a well-informed computer person, we managed to complete what was required, only to be told that the source code for this particular programme is faulty. Something of a shame---it's the only crossword compiler that I have been able to find that operates with Linux. [SLUG] The Crossword Compiler, again.
Well, I tried the suggestions that were posted and many thanks for them. And again, I append the logfile. Could someone comment/suggest, please? I gather I have to have all of build-essential installed before I can go further. Regards, Bill Bennett. [SLUG] Can anyone suggest a decent OCR application?
I've scanned some text (1200dpi), now .bmp files and am looking for a good (or even goodish) OCR application for use with Feisty Fawn. Has anyone had any experience . . .? [SLUG] Ubuntu and a crossword compiler
I want to install a crossword compiler on my laptop. Which is running Ubuntu Feisty Fawn. Downloaded the tarball, unpacked it. And followed the first instruction. Then did it again, because I have some messages that I can't follow. One of them was to install a C compiler, specifically gcc. apt-get install gcc says that it is installed and doesn't need upgrading. but to make sure multiverse is enabled. Dunno multiverse. I attach the error log. Can anyoine advise me, please? Regards, William Bennett. Re: [SLUG] Crossword compiler on Ubuntu, the errorfile.
Many thanks for the replies. I've run into something else in my quest for a crossword compiler. I ted to the internet and tried sudo apt-get install build essential and attach the log. Some of these libraries etc cannot be verified and I face the shame of having unverified material on my laptop. More advice, please. Regards, Bill Bennett. [SLUG] Couple of questions on Audacity.
Is there anyone on SLUG who can answer a couple of questions on Audacity, please? Have the manual, started teaching myself, but there are a couple of queries that are simply not covered. [SLUG] Problem with Feisty Totem.
I had trouble playing a dvd using Totem---I was told that I did not have the correct plugins. Went looking for help and was told to use the command apt-get install totem-xine which I did. As well as installing totem-xine, totem-gstream was removed--- presumably they can't both exist on the same machine. Tried the DVD again. Error message Totem has not got the plugin to handle DVD/ What am I doing wrong? Any help gratefully received. [SLUG] Query on The Gimp
I've just finished installing Ubuntu 7.04 and decided to look at The Gimp. According to the Help file, the help files are missing. In particular, I was told that gimp-help-en was nowhere to be found. I've seen this before, when I was using Fedora. Is there something special about these files that I don't know about? Any help etc. Bill Bennett. -- SLUG - Sydney Linux User's Group Mailing List - http://slug.org.au/ Subscription info and FAQs: http://slug.org.au/faq/mailinglists.html
[SLUG] AMD based computers.
I was searching the web for computer kits when I came across www.altech.com.au who were selling Druid computer kits, described as AMD based. So I asked an IT friend, who said that the Linux core was built around the AMD chip and that I should consider it. Has anyone any comment on this? I seem to recall someone advising someone else in the columns to stick wholly with Intel.
