[SLUG] ? on mandrake 8.2

2002-08-03 Thread Michael Signorelli

Hi,
Mandrake automatically detected-found
and configured itself to my cable internet card and worked so i had instant
access without having to ring an optus tech for assistance.

My question:
Has Mandrake got a
"win 4lin"  type program in its 3 disk set, so that for example i can
run downloaded  windows programs like,   msn messenger and
worldchessnetwork automatically in linux?

...in other words if i download
worldchessnetwork and select open or run from its current location will the
install-setup of worldchessnetwork be successsfull and work in
Mandrake?

Excellent! Its always good to hear success stories.

good question. rpmdrake reliably informs me that there isn't something
which directly does what you want.

There is a version of wine which ships with Mandrake - this may or may
not do what you want (wine is rougly speaking a windows emulator).

My experiences with wine have been that it actually works pretty well
for software released before about... 1998-99? somewhere around there.
After that software starts using COM and all those other technologies
that are foreign to me and wine doesn't have implemented yet.

If you are going to go the wine path I suggest you use CVS wine though -
wine is changing all the time. It's probably a good idea to stay on the
bleeding edge for it.

As an example - we used to have a girl living in our house here that
needed to do some work in Microsoft Excel. I'd set up a Mandrake 7.2
system on a P1 or a 486 or something and she was running all her
software remotely from my Athlon accross xdm (well, gdm but it's the xdm
protocol AFAIK). I had a script which would update my CVS sources of
wine and rebuild it about once every week (I think). And she was able to
use almost all of Microsoft Office 97 over the network with very few
problems at all.

All that said - you might want to look into using Linux replacements for
your windows software rather than trying to emulate windows. I think
Gabber will talk MSN Messenger.

I don't know about WorldChessNetwork. Is that the same as ICS? If it is
the same as ICS (chessclub.com) you might want to look into eboard
(http://eboard.sourceforge.net/) - which was something I found with a
quick search on freshmeat.

No. Not without a lot of fiddling and probably a lot of luck :)

Do ask if you want help setting up CVS wine (or if someone has good
experiences with one of the wine packages - post and let us know) or any
of the chess/messaging programs.

James.

(As an aside, the display stuff is still the X protocol, but gdm/xdm and I
think kdm use the XDMCP - X Display Manager Client Protocol - to get the
display manager running on the client straight away.)

GAIM is probably a better bet - Gabber relies on the jabber.org servers to
talk to MSN, and they generally don't work. GAIM does all the multiprotocol
stuff locally, and talks MSN, AOL, Yahoo, ICQ, etc.

Hello everyone

No there is nothing on the CD's that really does what you want.
What you need to do is either go to http://www.codeweavers.com and get
Crossover 4 Office that will not only install office but many other
Microsoft programs Ive heard that MSN messenger and even AOL works fine.
Even better join the Mandrake club and you will get access to the
Mandrake restricted FTP servers and there are rpm version of Crossover
and Star Office and many other things that are not free all in mdk rpm
format so you dont even have to configure anything.

Jabber clients (a list is at http://www.jabbercentral.org/clients/, you
probably have Gabber and possibly Konverse installed already) can talk
to MSN Messenger for you - however this is only a replacement for this
single program, not a solution to replacing general Windows programs :(

Yep. jabber.org seems to be almost permanently down but we have been
using a jabber server for quick internal communication in our small
business (www.gmc.net.au). It's been a bit fiddly to set up but once
done you are almost guaranteed to get through on the clients (Gabber,
JIM, etc.) to MSN, ICQ, Yahoo
