OK, they have some nice looking machines and the no OS
option is $120 cheaper than windows ex-pee home. Now if
only they would also pre-install Linux so I knew everything
 worked :-(.

I own a CL50 from Digital Star. The only parts I've never had working
are the SD card reader and the winmodem. I think both can be gotten to
work if you care enough. The network chip is a bog-standard realtek
part. It's got a centrino chipset, with Radeon 9000M (which Ubuntu
supported out of the box)

I'm pretty happy with the hardware, although the disk IO is slow.

The screen is nice @ 1400x1050.

You could also try EYO Technologies (link below) as they have a number
of laptops without an OS. I don't know if they would be willing to
install your choice of Linux, but it won't hurt to ask.

Digital Star (http://www.digitalstar.com.au) also have OS-less laptops on
offer. From their main page, follow the link to BTO Notebooks or simply go
here:
http://www.digitalstar.com.au/_PowerNoteComparisonChart.aspx

Then start spec-ing out the lappy of your choosing. FWIW, I've never dealt
with this company but I know people who have, and were happy with the service
and products.

Cheers,

The main confusion about C++ is that its practitioners think
it is simultaneously a high and low level language when in
reality it is good at neither.

The basic CPU+mainboard+display stuff will work for basically any laptop (in
my experience). The trick is to take a Knoppix CD etc into the shop and do
an lspcibut that kinda defeats the purpose of buying online eh?

Give them a call and see if they can send you the output of an lspci etc. You
might be surprised :)

Interesting to note with this mob is that getting a laptop with
Debian costs you $49 extra, but windows is included anyway. Ie
you still pay the microsoft tax.
