can use legally use DVB-S to watch pay tv?

Most certainly. You need a CAM (Conditional Access Module -- a special
PCMCIA crypto module) and a valid subscription smart card. The
encrypted DVB channels are sent to the CAM, decrypted, then sent back to
the DVB card for decoding and display. You can do PVR stuff with them
just like you would normally.

I wouldn't vouch for Foxtel's stuff being available though (do they use
satellite in Australia?). Here in Europe, Sky refuses to release their
CAM separately from their own decoder boxes, despite being repeatedly
ordered to do so by the EU. Though this may have something to do with
the fact that their crypto has never been cracked...

Yeah, look for DVB-S cards. I use a DVB-T card (for terrestrial free-to-air)
and it works very nicely - many of the DVB-S counterparts to DVB-T cards
'just work' with slightly different settings.

100's. just point your dish at a satellite and
start decoding. there are free channels on the same
sat's that run the pay tv stuff, just that the pay
tv stuff is encrypted.

there is digital radio and all sorts on there also

have a mate or two who are quite into it.

Re: [SLUG] Tv cards that can recieve satellite TV

2005-10-04 Thread Dean Hamstead

no, its illegal.

im not talking about pay tv though

paytv channels are scrambled. the free ones arent
you point your dish at the sat, and then start
scanning and find channels you like. or look
up tables etc for the satelitte

you can get cards for your satelite box that allow
you to use it for paytv.
