[Debian] How can I start the phone application?

2009-04-02 Thread river
Hello,

I've followed the instructions and install.sh script from
http://wiki.debian.org/DebianOnFreeRunner to install Debian.
Debian was installed and I can boot from microSD.
But after Debian started, the phone application didn't launched.
The screen showed the login prompt and I can login debian and run
commands in the shell like normal debian environment.
Just the phone application didn't started.
How can I use debian for Neo Freerunner as a normal phone?
Please help me.
I can provide log files if needed.

Sorry for my poor English and thank you for your patient.

Thanks,
River

you mean: black screen, white font, blinking cursosr and everything you
want to do requires login via ssh?

either X wasn't installed at all, not correctly or something happens while
starting X.

- do you have /var/log/X.org.0.log (or something similar)?
- does
ps ax
list a line with X
- what happens when you do
startx
?

Hi Arne,

Yes, I saw the blinking cursor but I have to login via ssh.
The is no process relative to X

debian-gta02:/var/log# ps ax | grep X
 1630 pts/0S+ 0:00 grep X

After startx, I get the following output from the terminal and the phone
application ran on the screen :)

But I have a question. Isn't x window system start by default?

Thanks,

It is started via /etc/init.d/nodm normally.

Please check if the nodm package is installed and/or check
/etc/init.d/nodm.

yes. it is.
i suppose, you do not see some flickering indicating failing attempts to
start X?
then probably either the runlevel is not configured correctly or you are
missing the dm replacement, nodm.

Hi Gregor,

The nodm package is installed.
But I saw a warning message while boot.

Not starting nodm because NODM_ENABLED is 'false' in /etc/default/nodm
(warning)

So I edited /etc/default/nodm.
I changed NODM_ENABLED=false to NODM_ENABLED=true and reboot.
After restart, the warning message disappeared but I still got the login
prompt only.

The nodm is running, but no GUI appears.
I got an error message from /var/log/Xorg.0.log

Fatal server error:
xf86OpenConsole: Cannot open virtual console 7 (No such file or directory)

that would be bug imo. should be reported.

I got an error message from /var/log/Xorg.0.log

Fatal server error:
xf86OpenConsole: Cannot open virtual console 7 (No such file or

the vt would be 4, not 7.
i do not have my fr at hand right now, but i think it is something to be
configured in nodm.

check /etc/init.d/nodm if there's vt7 configured somewhere.

Oops.

Both are the default settings for /etc/default/nodm, as seen in the
debconf template:
http://git.debian.org/?p=pkg-fso/nodm.git;a=blob;f=debian/nodm.templates;h=aac033ec8ef62da5a34fa82b2d6e5c2791881990;hb=HEAD

After a quick look I don't find anything in install.sh at
http://git.debian.org/?p=pkg-fso/files.git;a=blob;f=install.sh;h=4dfd11843b07fca6937b147691484a5cb76d008b;hb=HEAD
where these settigns are pre-seeded or overwritten ...
(And I don#t have my FR here either.)

I guess we need to wait for our install.sh specialists.

In the meantime changing
vt7 -nolisten tcp
to
vt1 -nolisten tcp
(since there's only 1 tty according to install.sh but you can check in
/etc/inittab) might help

right. Enrico added code to the package to make upgrades work, but for
new installations, the settings need to be preseeded. Should be a matter
of two or three lines in install.sh, plus one round of testing – any
volunteers?

[Debian] nodm and default VT (was Re: [Debian] How can I start the phone application?)

While the easiest solution would have been to simply add a preseed for
nodm, I decided to go for a more configurable one, thus install.sh now
accepts yet another user variable:

DISPLAY_MANAGER choose the Display Manager to be installed
(default to nodm, possible values are any *dm
package in the Debian archive, which could require
a LOT of disk space; set to none if you do not
want a Display Manager)

http://git.debian.org/?p=pkg-fso/files.git;a=commitdiff;h=503190a539a85757c00affd69a7ab9037753404a

Since we cannot add all of the possible configurations, only when
DISPLAY_MANAGER=nodm we preseed two values:

nodm nodm/x_options string "vt4 -nolisten tcp"
  nodm nodm/enabled string "true"

http://git.debian.org/?p=pkg-fso/files.git;a=commitdiff;h=e3c8dd33799797aa87513aeb5a7d0e6abab3aca5

I successfully tested my patch for three values of DISPLAY_MANAGER
(nodm, gdm, and none) before commiting it and I discovered some
interesting stuff:

- Debian now provides 6 VTs, while I seems to remember that in the past
only 4 of them were available (hence the reason for specifying
vt4...), I could not find any mail about that :-(

- if no VT is specified, xinit/startx uses the first VT available (which
IMHO is quite logic), on my FR vt2 as shown by /var/log/Xorg.0.log

- strangely enough, the above does happen with GDM as well, even if GDM
specifies VT7 as the VT to be used. I quickly checked the other *DMs
  in Debian:

  a) WDM starts X11 on vt2 (but then it exits for I do not know which
reason and I do not have time to investigate right now) and it does
not specify at all any VT in its configuration files

  b) XDM specifies vt7 in /etc/X11/xdm/Xservers and indeed it does not
start because vt7 is not available

  c) KDM is not installable, I guess because the migration to KDE4 is
 not yet completed on armel

   kdm: Depends: kdebase-data (< 4:3.5.10.dfsg.2) but 4:4.2.2-1 \
 is to be installed

I stopped my efforst WRT KDM here, I am not a KDE fan at all.

The above results brought me to think that GDM was faulty and indeed I
  am not alone:

http://bugs.debian.org/348033

Going back to nodm, a better solution would be to create (at least) two
VTs: 1 for the console and 7 for X11, thus any DM will work out of the
box. This would also render the FR more like a desktop system, where
the first X11 is always running on vt7. However, since I am not a tty
expert, I am not sure we can do that.

Thx, bye,
Gismo / Luca

I second the idea, and that could also be one less cause of divergency
between nodm on the openmoko and nodm on other systems; however, I also
do not know how to create a new tty.
