AW: [RCSE] Canards or something else
Great I'll try this method (not on a Zagi but on another ship which has very nasty slowspeed handling characteristics.). How, you might ask, does one make them? A friend uses a simple method: Finish the wing. Soak a suitable sized thin balsa sheet (or rather two pieces) in hot water till very soft (or leave in water - submerged - overnight). Tape it to the part of the leading edge where you want your fixed slat and let to dry - a few days if the climate is cool :-)! Now you have a perfectly curved piece of balsa sheet. Just add small balsa supports, that you in this case can stick into the EPP leading edge and glue into place. The ideal width of a slat is often discussed, as is the ideal placement, but his are about 10% of the chord wide and seems to be aligned with the leading edge or slightly below. To toughen the balsa you varnish them and cover them with your favourite covering - paper is one good material, if applied with the varnish, as it strengthens the balsa a lot. Some small RC heicopters have their rotor blades made that way! Suffice to say the slats on my friend's aircraft seem to make them very easy to handle at very low speeds and slats are known to be good against spins! To apply them to flying wings is probably a bit of an unchartered territory. Kaiser flaps are maybe easier, but need a servo, or two! Re: [RCSE] RTF r/c electric glider for beginn...
Another good choice for beginners is the Push-E Cat. An all EPP speed 400 motor glider. We've had a couple of folks learn on the Push-E at our filed. The biggest benefit is the minimum down time from a crash something that seems to discourage a lot of beginners. You could even make an aileron version. Re: [RCSE] Contest formats
The format was psuedo-F3J, basically F3J with winches, skegs and teeth. To summarize, the format was a 10-minute slot for each flight group, one relaunch allowed, last flight to count, FAI landing tape (5 points per meter), scores normalized within the flight group. There were 25 flyers ranging from novices to world-class. Wayne et al, We have done this in Dayton and had a blast, it is to bad that the powers to be (ie. FAI and the English) could not have come up with this in the first place. Real simple, sponsoring body has winches, 11 minute window, play F3J. At the Nats we could have flown two rounds more, or been done earlier, if winches were used and not lines, plus the facts that in the finals everyone would not have been looking for help. I had a blast flying F3J at the Nats, thanks to team member Rudy and Paul, you do get into those two man tows(but jees, there gone too!). But true F3J IMHO has all the hallmarks of other European activities, lots of effort for little results. Marc Gellart, Lima, OH RCSE-List facilities provided by Model Airplane News. [RCSE] Bozo Wants to Know...Top Ten of USA Soaring
If you were to build a list of the all time top ten guys of USA R/C soaring who would they be? USA RC soaring has been in place for what, some thirty years... Well, guys who is one the list? Now, so you don't have to work to hard I'll make it easy for you... Bozo should be placed near the bottom of the list...say in 9th place...God knows how humble I am... E-mail me your lists...I will compile... Bozo F3B practice this Saturday at Sulacome by and pull a few lines...drink a few beers and buy your Team Tee Shirts... see ya... [RCSE] New F3F toys!!
I just received my Pike F3F/B and Kobra F3F (not that cobra!) from Samba today. The Pike looks real good, 3 piece wing V tail etc. etc.. Fit and finish is very good. All wipers and live hinges (top hinge flap 60~65 deg down) finished. They come with all nutplates/pushrods installed and include all hardware and even the allen wrenches! The little Kobra F3F (100 in) is real cute. 2 piece wing with a poly break, one piece stab w/ elevator, T tail, all molded even the rudder. Pre assembled tail linkages/ pushrods w/4 ballast tubes in the wing roots. This thing breaks down flat to fit into a 50 in box. I think the Kobra will make a very nice full house travel model. Both have mod (thinned) RG 15 foils. I am looking forward to test flying them soon. Flight report coming!! Tom RCSE-List facilities provided by Model Airplane News. Re: [RCSE] Bozo Wants to Know...Top Ten of USA Soaring
Bozo: There is an old guy that flies down in the park and he is always getting kids to fly his old built-up glider. I guess he has taught a hundred kids and others to fly. He doesn't fly much because someone else always has his old Futaba, he doesn't do precision landings but he most always lands in the grass. I don't know his name but he should be in the top ten. Re: [RCSE] Bozo Wants to Know...Top Ten of USA Soaring
Bozo, #1 for me - Lee Renaud. He may not have been the best pilot, not have been the best flier, and may not have won the best contests...but he did more for RC and soaring specifically than pretty much any single person in my memory. I know that many who had the chance to meet him would agree. Jason Werner RCSE-List facilities provided by Model Airplane News. Send "subscribe" and "unsubscribe" requests to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Re: [RCSE] RDS pockets
David, The idea was brought up I think you missed one of the comments about retailers and stocking. How would they know what sizes to carry? This is especially hard with a new item with no sales history. I think a better idea would be to include some pocket making supplies with the RDS. How 'bout it Harley? Re: [RCSE] Bozo Wants to Know...Top Ten of USA Soaring
You guys from TOSS (Thousand Oaks Soaring Society), do you know an older flier by the name of Norm? You honored him about 1991 or so with an award. He flies on the slope above the water tank near downtown. Let me know if you know him. He got me started in RC soaring, what a great guy. Patient, honest, devoted to his hobby. Re: [RCSE] RDS pockets
-- From: David J. Schat [EMAIL PROTECTED] I think a better idea would be to include some pocket making supplies with the RDS. How 'bout it Harley? I had suggested that 1/2" wide strips of thin Formica be provided in the package. However, not knowing what size aircraft might be involved and considering that 3/8" or 3/4" widths would be more appropriate for smaller or larger aircraft, this was deemed impractical. Also, I had suggested commercial shim stock be provided for spacer material. However, WHAT THICKNESS considering the variety of wire sizes that might be used? Also who is supposed to cut this stuff the right sizes and get the edges free of burrs, assuming we knew what the "right sizes" were? I had also suggested an "expandable" pocket that could be made to work on 1/32" wire, with shims in increments of 1/32" to open it to receive up to 1/8" wire. This was all deemed too costly, too complex, and impractical considering that wire sizes that are supposed to be identical, do actually vary enough to be unusable with a given sized opening. Fellas. .be happy! We got a molded coupler that works! What is the big deal about joining Formica and balsa with CA to make a pocket? Should anyone who can't do that really be flying an RC aircraft?
