[RCSE] Highlander Toughness and Kimbrough Servosavers

1999-09-12 Thread Dave and Elaine

Just off a well-stretched highstart and with the wing tipped the wrong way
to a fairly stiff crosswind my Highlander zipped sideways into the top 2/3
of a tree. I thought, "Oh *; guess I'll have to climb a tree." No,
there it is, ripping and tearing through the branches and then zipping up
the highstart. Wow! A close one. Oh, oh, not home yet. Once off the line
it's all over the sky, a *real* bear to get it (sort of) under control and
back on the ground. Finally ended in a landing totally lacking in any
grace; just awful...and just after a beginner had literally bounced it up
and down on the ground during his landing (first try at RC sailplanes).
Enough for one day; lots of repairs to make.

Making a long story short, in the shop I found one of the aileron servos
disconnected, the rudder servo clevis bent and hanging loose, a dinged TE,
and the wing askew from a ripped-out wing dowel; guess that explains the
wild flying. However, all I needed to do was connect the aileron, replace
the servo clevis (glad I used Kimbrough servo savers), and patch the dinged
TE and ripped-out wing dowel (a couple of hours work, including retaping and
recovering). Went flying the next day.

On a similar note, my shortest flight ever was less than one second. Not a
popoff but, again, just off a standard-class highstart (also
well-stretched), the Highlander flipped over and dove nose down under full
power into the ground. Damage: two small cuts in the EPP.

What a sailplane!!! In either case my Sagitta (or any balsa built-up) would
have been in a cigar box.

Thanks MAD and Kimbrough...and usual disclaimers.

Dave

Hi Chuck, I'm cleared (so far) to attend your weekend contest. On the RES
question, I suggest you poll the guys attending your contest rather than
base your decisions on responses from guys that have opinions, but don't
attend contests.

Also, one of the big reasons I want to fly with you guys are the ten
minute tasks.

[RCSE] Boomerang setup

1999-09-12 Thread Aireze1

Hi All
A question for all you slope-heads. How can I get some elevator control while
turning either direction? When I turn left or right the elevator control
seems to vanish. I checked it on the ground and sure enough if full turn and
full up or down is applied only the turn signal is fully applied. The up or
down elevator control in this case is about a tenth of the turn control. I'm
using a Futaba T6XA radio and a Hitec 555 receiver. Any help would be greatly
appreciated.

Re: [RCSE] FVK Gillette sucks!

1999-09-12 Thread Paul McKee

My Gillette had its first flights at the speed trials this summer at Kiona.
I like the plane. I built it with both elevator and rudder control on the V
tail. This is the only way to go on this plane as it needs the rudder mixed
with the ailerons to roll well. It flies inverted great. When ballasted up
it can be flown quite fast (it turned in some 105mph timed runs over 200
meters at Kiona). I have flown it in fairly light lift and it did fine.

[RCSE] v-tail discussion, more clarification

1999-09-12 Thread Robert Scott

One important thing to realize with v-tails it that the moment arm (the
distance between the rotating force and the axis it rots aroung) is long,
which makes it work well for the yaw and pitch axes that you want from a
vtail, since the moment is the distance from the vtail to the pitch and yaw
axis, way up by the wing. The moment for the roll axis that you DONT want is
only from the center of lift of the vtail to the roll axis, a few inches
away, so doesnt have much leverage! There IS as much roll force as you would
expect, but it doesnt get the leverage it needs to roll the plane, while the
pitch and yaw you DO want get plenty of leverage, so win out over the roll.

Or, at least thats how I've always understood vtails to work.

Re: [RCSE] VTAIL answers-thxs

1999-09-12 Thread Gil Scott

Most everybody (even those who know better) launches a v-tail at least
once with the control backwards. HLGs usually survive.

The other fun thing is to try to fly one with only one of the two servos
working. Had it happen on my X440 electric when a servo gear tooth
chipped. If I had realized what was wrong I could have limped back
being content to climb in a turn one direction, go straight or descend
in a turn the other way around. As it was I let the airplane fly out of
sight and land itself without damage over the tree line at the field.

Finally, most people I know with v-tail HLGs admit to running the v-tail
into something either in the car or while carrying the fuse through a
door. There is a special magnetic force in v-tails.

Re: [RCSE] Battery charger recomendations?

1999-09-12 Thread Doug Blackburn

Patrick,
I just picked up a used Hobbico field charger for twenty bucks
from a pilot on the exchange. I think they normally go for around $40.00
- $50.00 bucks. Simple to use. Charges either 4.8 volt or 6.00 volt
receiver batteries, and also the 9.6 TX battery independently of one
another. Simple hook up. Plug in either the RX or Tx battery and push the
start button for the appropiate one. The light goes on and then starts
blinking when it peaks. Yesterday we found a wing that another fellow
pilot lost about a month ago. We placed it on the charger and after about
twenty five minutes, it was ready to go. His needs to be cycled to get it
back into condition wich this model does not do, other then that I think
you will be happy with it. It is not uncommon for Mike Wofford (fellow
slope Rebel) to have his at the flying site and a line of gear waiting
to go on it. That's why I bought the same kind. It works good for the
money. I'm sure you will get other opinions. You can either make up your
own leads for the type of gear you use, or buy them from a Hobbico dealer
pre-made, your choice. It does not come with charging leads. I am making
my own from a couple of toasted servos and an older wall charger that
will be scarificed so we can charge in the field. Good Luck. Tower has
them, as do most other hobby shops. Good Luck

Re: [RCSE] Bent Wing Rod Tempering

1999-09-12 Thread Aerofoam

Some friends of mine produce titanum and aluminum
custom racing mountain bikes.
They cook their 60 series frames in a pizza oven
at about 300F. for 8 hours.
An interesting side note is that aluminum hardens
with age and the heat treatment speeds up the aging
process. For true tempering, there are a number of
cycles required to get a "spring" type consistency.
In the case of the wing rod, I would throw it away because
it probably has some fracturing where it is bent and bending
it back WILL definately cause a vulnerable spot that heating
wont help.
