[RCSE] RDS coupler sources & help.

1999-11-12 Thread Harley Michaelis

A SOURCES page has been put into the RDS website below. From the opening
page, click on SOURCES to bring up that page and click on various banners
for more info. Our mutual friend Tim McCann has added the couplers to his
line of neat soaring things and if you get a skid or skeg at the same time,
you'll escape any possible S & H.

I hope all who purchased couplers from me (990 pair!) will take the
initiative to make use of them and show up at the field next year with
clean wings for a change. With all the help available in the website, there
is no reason to be intimidated by the installation. The website is
regularly updated to be on top of new things learned from my own unending
efforts and from other modeler input. Rob Crockett's set of pics, now
accessible in the website, taken as he retrofitted the system in an obechi
skinned Sapphire, shows just what he did, step by step. Check 'em out. . .
.nicely detailed "how to" stuff. Holler if you have questions.

[RCSE] Sea Breeze

1999-11-12 Thread Perry Hudson

You guys ever heard of a Sea Breeze. She a 100 inch poly but is foam and
obechi. Rudder/Elevator but no spoilers or flaps. I was wondering what
the airfoil is?. It is highly under cambered and looks decidedly
European is overall design. She has a full flying T stabilizer. Anyone
hazard to guess at the C.G.

[RCSE] Joining balsa sheets for wing skins

1999-11-12 Thread James Porter Jr

To carry the former thread with CA a little farther.

Spray the waxed paper with CA before you place the sheets. This way any CA
that makes it through the joint goes no further and one side of the sheet
has no hard spots.

[RCSE] Antenna loc on Berg RX needed

1999-11-12 Thread Jay Sloat

Argh!,
I'm hoping someone on this list might be able to help
me out. I had the antenna wire come off my FMA BERG RX today while
removing it from my glider. Unfortunately it broke so close to the
PC board that I can't tell where I need to re attatch it. Can
anybody with this setup take a look and describe the proper location?
I was hoping to repair it in time to fly this weekend.
Thanks in advance,
-Jay Sloat-

[RCSE] Alternative to Horizon for JR radio repair - a follow up

1999-11-12 Thread Ron

On Monday 11/8 I posted a note to the list on the above subject. When I
got home from work Wednesday, there was a message on my machine from
Dave Poole of Horizon Hobbies repair center. It seems his boss read my
message and had Dave call to make a generous offer of repairing my 347
on the house. While I have not replied directly because I've been
pretty busy during working hours, I wanted to let the list know of the
favorable outcome.

Horizon's management saw an opportunity to make things right with a
customer. For that, I wish to complement them.

BTW, I'll probably take them up on it as soon as I can pull the radio
from my plane:)

[RCSE] Programming JR XP8103

1999-11-12 Thread Ron

Since no one seemed to have an opinion, I thought I'd post the results
of my trial/error approach to the problem.

The problem was: How do we put an auxiliary device on the aux3 channel
and have proportional control in both flight and landing modes?

First, having flown with a 347 for 6 years and programmed a 783 a number
of times, I'd like to say that Sherman's approach is superior to the one
I had used.

Second, although there probably is a better way, this is what I did to
get the problem solved. Here are the basic steps:

set mix 4 to pot5->aux3
rate: +100%
+100%
SW: on
offset +170

set mix 6 to aux3->aux3
rate: +100%
0%
SW: btfy1
offset -512

aux3: norm

trvl adj
aux3+100%
-100%
sub trim
aux3-170

Now I can have full inflight adjustment of an "autopilot" or gyro
device. The plan is to turn the auto pilot off for thermalling, then
when she gets too high to see, dial in the autopilot and head cross
country. I also will have a thermal sniffler on board to
maximize/minimize flying through lift/sink at speck altitude. Lastly,
the plane will have an altimeter watch to measure just how high she
gets. This is what happens to some when they've been flying for too
long:)

Hope you got something from this (even if its just a smile).

[RCSE] Temple Hill Slope Squadron's Monthly Fun-Fly

1999-11-12 Thread Michael Robinson

Hey Guys,

Just in case any of you have forgotten, this Sunday (the 14th) is Temple
Hill's monthly fun-fly. We'll definitely have some combat going and we
may have some semi-organized little competitions too (we've been
experimenting a new type of slope competition that includes precise
timing and precision landings). So, bring all your planes and come have
some fun.

Directions can be found at our website:

Re: [RCSE] RAHM retriver

Wouldn't it be simpler to just use a 6 volt battery? I got mine at a local
auto store. It works fine.

[RCSE] Hanger 4 Products

1999-11-12 Thread Gary Milabar

I have a Whirlwind that was made by Hanger 4, that I picked up a few years
back.

I'm wondering Do they still manufacture their products. If so where can I
get ahold of them. I'm looking for a Visionary kit.

 Thanks a lot Gary M.

[RCSE] A plethora of ARFs

1999-11-12 Thread James C Deck

The very first inside page of the latest issue of "Model Airplane News"
shows a selection of ARF sailplanes. Looks like Hobby Shack. I have a few
questions:
What's the quality like - will they take a good launch?
Where do they come from?
What about the Optima Pro with rudder, elevator, ailerons and
spoilers?
Are these really available now or is there a long, long wait before
you can hold one in your hand?

Regarding the last question, there seems to be a practice among hobby
suppliers of announcing a product long, long, before it's truly
available.(Yes, I know all about software vendors and vaporware) Perhaps
they should harken to the words of one of the Chicago Bears: "Don't let your
mouth write a check your behind can't cash".

[RCSE] Mantis incidence question

1999-11-12 Thread Walter Lynch

Did some hand launching of my new Mantis today off a little 8ft berm. Boy
that thing is easy to fly and can really slow up with out stalling, cant
wait to winch it up. I suspect maybe incidence is a little off as cg seemed
pretty close but I had to add a little up trim to obtain level flight.
Stab/vtail is fixed so I cant shim it as I usually do when fine tuning
incidence. Which way would I shim main wing to level out flight(plane wants
to dive slightly w/neutral trim)- leading edge up or down? Thanks Walter

Re: [RCSE] My sanding secrets and tools

1999-11-12 Thread Lynford Disbrow

Scobie et al,

I believe you have covered the sandpapered subject very well.

I would like to add that a handfull of power sanders can make quick work
of moving material. I have a complete cabinet shop left over from a
previous life. I use table belt sanders, vibrating sanders, orbital
sanders, vertical belt sanders, and of course let us not forget Chris
Adams and his great Scrollsanders.

Above, when I said quick work of moving material, therein lies a big
problem. You have to be very delicate when using power sanders so you
don't remove more than you want, make rounds into lopsided octagons etc.
Typically, I use about two grits finer than I would with hand sanding.
This helps to prevent oversanding.

When I get the object roughed out with saws and power sanders, I go with
Scobie said so very well.

Have fun
