[RCSE] RE: Does anyone know how to get to Palos Verdes?
Our Temple Hill website has this info. I've flown at several places in Maui and can compare our coast to none of them. Palos Verdes is wider and easier with more manageable lift than the lighthouse in Maui, but the landing areas are terrible. Pt. Fermin is rumored to be the best most consistently insane lift, but the landings are even harder. I of course, would recommend Temple Hill in Pomona CA. Better yet, go to Parker Mountain. Set up as flaperons you would be asking for trouble with tip stall when you drop the flaps. Simulate (roughtly) the wing in Liftroll.xls by Making four equal length panels and then inputting progressively larger positive deflections for the panels as you go toward the tip. Try 5degrees AOA and then input 2 deg for center panels 4 on mid-inner panels, 6 on mid-outer panels, and 8 on tip panels. The danger will be obvious. > What about such a setup on a thermal plane? Re: [RCSE] Does anyone know how to get to Palos Verdes?
Hello All, One of the best flying sites in Palos Verdes can be reached as follows: Drive up Crenshaw Blvd. all the way to the top of the hill. Cross Crest drive, and turn right into the park area. Walk 100' to the edge of the rim, and toss your glider. You will be flying into a West wind, with a BEAUTIFUL view of Porteguese Bend and Catalina Island. This is one of my favorite spots to fly! I was lucky, and grew up near there as a young boy.Kraft R/C units in 1972..ah the memories. Rick Powers RCSE-List facilities provided by Model Airplane News. [RCSE] Futaba 8UAFS or JR 8103 for six channel sailplanes
I am interested in purchasing a computer radio and am trying to decide between the Futaba 8UAFS and the JR 8103. I'm currently leaning towards the Futaba because I own some Futaba gear, although most of my receivers can be switched to work with either radio. I primarily fly sailplanes as well as power planes with my goal being to move up to full house six channel open class sailplanes. My current radio (Futaba 6XA) will not allow me full control of a six channel sailplane. I have looked through some old threads but have a few questions: Is one radio better suited for controlling six channel sailplanes? If I purchased the helicopter version (Futaba 8UHFS) so that the flight-mode switch is placed on the left-hand side, will this in any way compromise the sailplane programming or the standard power plane programming? Perhaps a better way to phrase this question is what are the differences between the Futaba 8UAFS and the Futaba 8UHFS? I understand that the Hi-Tec Spectra module works with the Futaba radio. Does the JR 8103 offer similar functionality? Thanks in advance for your help, Jeff Hainline RCSE-List facilities provided by Model Airplane News. [RCSE] Does anyone know how to get to Palos Verdes?
I'm a college student from Hawaii stuck in the slopeless land of Texas. (Lemme tell you, we had a good slope in Hawaii!) I'm looking for somewhere to go for Christmas Break or maybe spring break. I heard that Palos Verdes was good and was wondering if anyone knows how to get the actual flying site. I was looking for a map on mapquest.com and was wondering what city I should look in. These are probably preety stupid sounding questions but I don't know and I want to go flying! [RCSE] Re: Aileron Design (elevon)
>I have been looking at a slope foamie (for once not a flying wing) >and have some questions about aileron size. NOT a flying wing!?!? BLASPHEMY! Seriously, ailerons are most often constant chord because no one wants the hassle of tapering them. Actually having to pickup a sanding block and do WORK. Perish the thought. Gad, it might even scatter that nasty saw dust all over the workshop and we can't have that. A good choice would be to pick your desired percentage of the wing chord and maintain that value over the span. The ideal choice would be to vary the percentage over the span according your target values of Cl and lift distribution during control surface deflections. But thinking of that makes my dizzy. What's the appropriate percentage to pick? Good question. Some let their ego get in the way and choose ridiculously large values. Resist this temptation. 25% is the typical value that is heard very frequently. On a flying wing (oops there I go again), I also like 20-25%. My latest wing uses 21.5% at the tips tapered to %8.5 at the root. One of my favorite flying wings uses 20% at the tips and 10% at the root. [RCSE] Aileron Design
I have been looking at a slope foamie (for once not a flying wing) and have some questions about aileron size. This particular model has long narrow wings and uses 2" TE stock for ailerons. Out at the wingtip that is more than half the wing chord. Is this OK for a slope plane? Any difference if the plane is set up with flaperons or spoilerons? What about such a setup on a thermal plane? [RCSE] Stretched Wing Saggita
Stan - the Sagitta fuse is about right for a 2 meter wing, IMHO. It's a great flying plane, in the right hands, and I have seen the wings stretched. Look around and you will see that current designs are stretching the tail boom on back, and the noses are getting longer to match. There are good reasons. If you want to experiment, by all means do so. Bear in mind that IT'S THE PILOT, NOT THE PLANE. A good pilot can make pretty much any plane work well, even a stretched wing Sagitta. It'll probably look cool as well. happy trails - Rob Glover ps - sorry to post & run, but I gotta be offline for a couple days...going to Cambridge for beans and lobsters. << How large a wingspan can you put on a Sagitta fuselage and still maintain a good degree of rudder/elevator control ?
