[RCSE] Flying Movies-The High and the Mighty

2000-03-18 Thread Marc Gellart

You know, after seeing all these movies listed,
there is not a one that I did not enjoy. Some carry more enjoyment than
others, i.e. 633 Squadron, 12 O'Clock High, Strategic Air Command, Top Gun and
the Blue Max. One that I have not seen on anyones list was a John Wayne
movie by the name of The High and the Mighty. Wayne is an airline pilot
who lost his wife and kid in a crash that he was part of the flight crew.
The main part of the movie is about one flight from Hawaii to San Fran in a
DC-7? that everyone on board is looking their own demons in the face.
There is a fight and a shot disables an engine and they are loosing fuel, the
evil Point of No Return is met and they make SF with engines failing on
final. In typical John Wayne style he strolls away on the ramp like it was
no big deal.

[RCSE] Dawn Flight video

2000-03-18 Thread James C Deck

Okay, "Dawn Flight" was a short (15 minute) film made in 1975 and
nominated (but didn't win) for best short film. It features two 1-26
gliders in an incredible chase and has great photography.
You can buy a VHS copy for $79.00 at :
www.pyramidmedia.com
It's a great film but the price is a bit stiff.

Re: [RCSE] Batteries AGAIN!

2000-03-18 Thread mrmaserati

About four years ago, when I bought an Audiovox cell phone, I thought I had scored a
great deal, because it came with three battery
packs. NiMH no less. There is a reason, because the NiMH batt's will not last very
long. Even had to replace two of the packs. It
never got better, the life got shorter and the charging became more frequent. I could
never consider using this kind of cell in an
airplane that I have sweated many, many hours over while we still have the relative
decent reliability of Ni- Cads.
Thanks for the soap box.

Heck, now that i'm asking questions I'll ask an open ended one and I

Re: [RCSE] Favorite films and novels

2000-03-18 Thread gabe baltaian

Hi Guys,

You missed a few good ones:

Movie with Glenn Ford from Ernie Gann book about airliner crash caused by coffee
spilling into indicator console. Name = "Fate is
the Hunter" maybe??

"Capricorn One" - great chase sequence at the end

"Birds of Prey" - David Janssen is a WW2 vet / traffic reporter in Salt Lake City
flying a Hughes 500 chasing bank robbers in
Alouette through canyons and such. Really neat flying sequences. (This may have
started out as a tv film, but it's worth catching)
(1974-75??)

"The Hunters" - pretty basic plot about Korean War fighter pilots, but it had a lot of
air-to-air footage and it was among the best
I've ever seen. I've only seen it once late at night and don't remember stars etc, but
EXCELLENT!!

"The Spirit of St. Louis" - Somebody may have mentioned it but I'm not sure.

"Dr. Strangelove" - Yah!

Novels:
Anything by St.Exupery - if you haven't read anything by him, start with "Night Flight"
Anything by Ernie Gann (well, most anything, but don't ignore his autobiography
"Hostage to Fortune")
"The Spirit of St. Louis" - autobiography, but WOW
"Catch-22" - lousy movie even if it had lots of B-25s but great book
"West with the Night"
"Memoirs of WWI" - by Brigadier-General William B. (Billy) Mitchell

[RCSE] Saw the MPX Lucky fly today! Great Deal!

2000-03-18 Thread GordySoar

I flew the Lump today with Mike, who owns a Mulitplex Lucky.

This is a 76" V tailed sloper that flys absolutely sweet. Big, long
spoilerons gives it a nice roll rate, and the spoileron function amazed me
when I saw it slow down and sink in for its landings.

Obechi Wing comes pretty much done and in ONE piece! All holes are drilled,
Control rods in place, and blind nuts in place. Cool Carbon latice canopy
too.

It has an RG15 blended out at the tips to a RG12 for some mystical purpose
that seems to work. It climbed way up in lift yet had no problems in harsh
vertical dives accross the slope. The tail is a glue on but Mike made it a
bolt on for easier transport...pretty simple to do, according to Mike.

Mike is pretty much a second year newbie and this was his 'step up' from
floaters and foamies.

Mpx lists it at a measely $212 which for what you get and how much is already
done, is an amazing value...considering HLG's of this caliber of plane exceed
$250 with a hole lot less done for you.A
HREF="http://www.multiplexrc.com/lucky.htm"Lucky site/A

Its light too! I think you could cut flaps in with no problem if you wanted
a neat, cheap 2m contest ship.

[RCSE] Flew the Composite Specialties EPP Bandit today too!

2000-03-18 Thread GordySoar

This one is a Zipper flying wing look alike and today I got to see both the
Zipper and the Bandit fly together.

If you guys have a need for speed its tough to beat a Zipper, but for those
of you who are EPP junkies the Bandit is a close to a really hot sloper you
can get.

I mean its quick but what blew me away was how it retained energy and gobbled
up altitude in thermal air!

It looks cool ripping around and it bounces! A HREF="http://www.f3x.com"Comp
osite Specialties/A

The model I flew was the 48" version, Tom has a 60" which I hope to do a
review on in the coming months for RCSD.

The Bandit is a EPP winner!

[RCSE] RE: Custom winglets !

2000-03-18 Thread Nathan Marni Woods

1. Tiplets. Don't make them Smaller! Especially don't reduce the amount of
tip that's below the wing. If you do, you will 'ruin' the airfoil and have
all kinds of tipstall problems. To reduce weight, use lightweight balsa or
even the pressed foam trays that your t-bone steak comes on. As long as you
use this criteria, make 'em any fancy shape you want.

Also consider using a lithium 2-cell (3 volts each) battery pack. Use the
CR123's, and be careful soldering the leads on to them. Lithium's don't
like heat !

Also, use HS-55's They are pretty new and kind of hard to find, but they
are as strong as HS-60's in a HS-50 case. Great stuff! DJ Areotech uses
them in their 2M planes!

Currently, if you want a Really light Boomerang, Frank can cut you one made
of white foam, similar to the Zagi THL. It comes out around 9 ounces with
moderate care to details. I've been thinking about using the clear Mylar
covering that the indoor guys use, that or the silk stuff. With unlimited
time and money, 8 ounce boomerangs are quite feasible.

2. Removable tow hook:

Use two layers of light plywood and take a short woodscrew with a smooth
shank and the threaded part is about 1/2" long. Then bend the shank 90
degrees, and cut it off with your Dremel. Screw it into the plywood and
tape it on with Strapping tape when the need arises.

Cheers,

Nathan Woods

Nathan- In building the lightest possible Boomerang, not for Combat, what
shape do you suggest for coroplast winglets. Also, do you see a problem with
glueing them to the end of the wing instead of the tape method ? I couldnt
find any pictures of
small winglets on your site. I am using these methods to build a Boomerang

[RCSE] MPX Lucky, NSP Victor, FVK Gillette

2000-03-18 Thread Raymond Wong

I have a FVK Gillette and a NSP Victor, they were in the same price range as the
Lucky. I flew with the other guy's Lucky and I
made a comparison.

Gillette is faster than Lucky when both are not ballasted.
Gillette can carry a lot more weight than Lucky because the wing is glassed.
Gillette also perform ultra fast roll, with a head turning whizzing sound.
Gillette is all covered, internally hinged, very good finished look.
Gillette can take fair bit of abuse, the wing is glassed.
Gillette and Lucky has 2 piece removable wing for easy transport.
Victor has the strongest wing of all 3, carbon over foam, you can chop down a tree
with this wing.
Victor is fastest of all.
Victor has fastest roll rate.
Victor has a one piece wing to be jointed by wrapping around thick glass cloth,
therefore can not be broken down for transport.
Victor does not have a molded in vtail fitting, it is harder to make a precise and
strong vtail section.
Lucky is a little bit more light lift than the other two.

am I missing anything?
