if a sailplane need to have down elevator to fly level
it means the sailplane is tail heavy?

Luis:
At the risk of being overly simplistic, I would offer the following:
If the balance is correct (or close), it then having to hold or trim in down
elevator means that the decalage (sometimes mistakenly called incidence)
between the stabilizer and the wing is incorrect. Of course, first try to get
the balance where you like to fly it--some flyers like a more nose heavy
model, while others like a more neutrally stable model. (Usually, a more
neutrally stable model will be a bit harder to fly, but will show thermals
better or more easily.) So, get the balance where you like it. If any down or
up elevator still remains, then adjust the wing or the stab until the
elevator is neutral at the best (or that which you like best) glide angle.
Best regards,
Bob Sliff

[RCSE] Help with Emerald bellcrank repair

2000-10-19 Thread Steven Meyer

I need some advice. I have an original Renaud Emerald. An Emerald Pro. :-)

The stab bellcrank assembly has separated. The brass tube is still in
place. Both sides that mount to the insides of the fin are still attached,
however it appears that whatever is attached to that is loose. I have been
flying it this way.

If I push it together and dribble CA down on that joint between the mount
and shaft will the bellcrank have a good chance of remaining CA free? I
have never had the Emerald fin open.

Thanks,

Steve Meyer http://SOARchicago.com/stmeyer/

[RCSE] mini salto help

2000-10-19 Thread Louis Gonzalez

hi:

does anyone fly a mini salto molded ??
it is sold by slmodel and nsp.
i have one and its been real hard to fly ...it tends to snaproll on turns.
it s very well balanced ...tried everything and havent been able to getit to
fly right.

im using ailerons and the vtail control surfaces only for elevator..
does anybody think this is my problem..?..do you think i realy have to
install an extra servo so that it will have a working rudder.?

i have flown so many sailplanes leaving the rudder on neautral and only use
eleveator and ailerons,,that includes my mini ellipse wich has a v tail and
i only use it for elevator and works perfect.

any help on this mini salto apprecieted.

I've been told this plane is very sensitive with CG changes. Have you
tried moving the CG forward? That might make it a bit less reluctnant to
snap.

if I try to I hit that URL. Are you sure you have it right and the

RE: [RCSE] mini salto help

2000-10-19 Thread Jim Cubbage

Louis,

I have a pretty small plane and it is very cg sensitive. What I mean by
that is that I measured the cg, statically, by marking the cg to the
manufactured specifications, and taped a small battery to the location, then
balanced it. It balanced, but would always fall first after a second or
two. Figured good enough.

NO WAY, it was VERY tail heavy for this plane, very difficult to fly. I
also noticed that even though the plane floated a bit, it took a lot more
weight on the nose than I would have thought to bring it back down.

Also, there was a HUGE difference on the cg location, I mean if I was off by
1/8" on taping the battery to the cg location, it was a huge difference in
balance.

I think you are still tail heavy, it is always easier to be a bit nose heavy
than tail heavy.

[RCSE] Parker Mountain Adventure 2K

2000-10-19 Thread James V. Bacus

I have tried to make a nice write up after finishing up a web page of
pictures from my recent Parker Mountain adventure with Bruce Davidson, but
my computer has crashed twice during that process and I am mad. Here is
the address of the thumb nailed web page. They say a picture is worth a
thousand words... yet stills can't convey the power of DS at Parker Mountain.

I'll try to write up the adventure again for RCSE when I am less pissed off
at my computer. 8-)
