[RCSE] digital cams for flying shots

2001-03-27 Thread Gary Retterbush

I have the Sony DSC-S50 and it has 2 features which are nice for shots of
moving planes. First, it has a fast focus mode and secondly, it has a freeze
settings mode which is activated like many SLR's. Depressing the button half
way freezes the focus and exposure. Then when you press that last little bit
you have an instant photo. I would assume others must function along these
lines?? The down side of the S50 is that is has no optical finder. One
quickly learns to just sight over the top of the case; crude but it works.
The next better model (S-70) has an optical finder.

To see the results of my very first shots with this camera (last year) see:

[RCSE] HLG and Camber control w/8103

2001-03-27 Thread Brian Turner

I can honestly say that I have not played with this, but a friend recently
purchased a new HLG.

He/we would like to know an easy way to set up HLG with camber control on
the flap stick. We have done it on our full house ships, never with a plane
without flaps to link them to.

I am thinking that we can hook up the ailerons to the flap channels and mate
the ailerons to the flaps similar to our full house ship. But I do not have
a plane hooked up to my Tx to try my ideas out. And without that... I am not
good enough at the programming to do it otherwise.

I don't have an 8103, but I notice on the features page of the Horizon

Wouldn't it be easier just to use that?

[RCSE] New F3JTow Rule

2001-03-27 Thread Pat McCleave

Hi Gang,

I guess I just do not get it. It sounds like there is almost no support for
this new rule so how come some small group of people can just up and impose
a rule like this especially right before the season starts without getting a
consensus vote from the masses. It sounds to me like we need to see what
kinds of planes these guys have secretly gone out and purchased prior to
this rule change. I for one have a great interest in flying F3J this year
and have spent over $2000 gearing up to be able to fly such events and now
the planes I have purchased are probably going to be at a disadvantage
because of a rule change that nobody agrees with and does not even
successfully address the safety issue they are using to be able to push the
change through. My expense is really minimal compared to the great expense
that the manufacturers of these super ships we all fly have laid down to
make molds and to purchase the materials in which to build our planes. I
think we need to just say no to the rule and look strongly at those in power
that are trying to implement such a change and see if they are really what's
best for our sport. One remote incident where proper safety guidelines were
obviously not followed does not warrant such drastic measure as these. Will
these rule changes save someone else's life or injury? Maybe. Will the new
rules result in a similar accident occurring? Maybe. When I have towed for
someone I never felt my life or body was in any grave danger or I would not
have towed. With the new proposed rule I WOULD NOT TOW or HOLD THE PULLEY
for fear something very bad could happen in the event of a line break or
worse yet someone letting go of the pulley. Neither of the above problems
even begin to address the possible shoulder, wrist or arm injuries which are
going to be more prevalent if we start tethering the pulleys to our hand or
wrist. Bottom line is the rule was not thought out properly and should not
even be considered. JMHO.

See Ya,

Thanks for the plug BTW ;-)

I've been shooting a Canon D30 (SLR style Digital) since xmas, and it
shows.
The problem I've had with other digitals that are not SLR style is the
delay
from when you push down on the shutter button, to the time the picture is
actually taken. I think the Sony's do a fair job of attempting to fix the
problem with their newer DSC-P1, but there is still about a 1/2 second
delay, and it's still in the $700 range. The other option is to take
camcorder frame grabs. I've seen some good results from this, but only when
the video camera is within it's optical range (not digital range). I've not
had great luck with Epson, and Kodak camera for action shots.

no matter how you slice it, digital has a fair way to go before you get the
quality of a good 35mm camera for less than $500 for action shots. If you
looking for static shots, then that's a whole other question there are
lots of choices everywhere.

Re: [FAIsoaring] Re: [RCSE] Re:Requiem for the Stake

2001-03-27 Thread Dennis Phelan

Greetings,
I haven't seen anything yet that prohibits the staking of the
anchor-person to the ground. As long as there is no solid connection
between the line and the stake it should be within the rules? A
length of line around the waist of the anchor-person should hold.

If that were allowed, would you still be able to "tow" with two
people? If you took the third helper from the pilots side for the
position of anchor, which is not towing, you could still use two to
pull?

But, I think the aim is to reduce deaths and the new rule should do
that, though it might increase injuries. Lower launch altitudes will
make the task tougher. The better pilot should have a clear chance to
win. Differences in launch equipment will show up. Oh well, it is
F3J.

These are the kind of thoughts I had when I first read the post about the
rule change. Flying in my one and only F3J contest a few years ago in
England with a local club northeast of London, I saw that the most
competitive pilots were flying very light weight, long-span gliders, towed
up on light, stretchy mono (and where possible by guys who could run fast
and were not all that big). They were using one-man tows, straight ahead,
no pulleys, etc.

I think there is no easy solution and banning tethered lines in very
understandable to prevent similiar accidents in the future.
For those not familiar with F3J towing (many in the US): you only have 5
minutes to run out on the field, stake your lines, and prepare before the
flight. This process is often hurried and introduces some very real
 dangers.

So, If everyone uses two towmen pulling straight (without a pulley) will
it
change the competitive advantage of having two big and strong guys?
Kinda,
in no wind to light wind situations you will want towmen that can run fast
as well. They won't need to be quite as big because they now only have the
tension of the plane, not 2X. The difference between "good" towmen and
"bad" towmen will be more noticeable when not using a pulley, especially
in
 light conditions.

Since you won't be able to get line speed needed in no wind/light wind
conditons having a specialized "light air" plane in your 3 airplane quiver
would be advantagous (more so than previously) to make the most of the
 tension you do have.

Does this change the weight of the line you would use? Maybe, I might
try
something extra light and stretchy in those no/light wind situations.

Did I miss any possible stratedgy changes this might introduce?

This does not sound well thought out...

In the two man option the man who runs with the pulley is gonna get
 WHAPPED
HARD if the man who is acting as the "spike" looses grip.

Tows with out a staked in pulley, if even by two average men takes about
twice the exertion to even getting close to what we think of as a
competitive tow. Time for a different set of models now, and damn is
that
  expensive.

I personally liked it the way it was, maybe they should have spec'ed the
equipment we should use or something a bit less drastic.

With immediate effect as of Monday 26th March the F3B F3J rules will

Two man towing is still is OK, as is the use of pulleys. Winch

Although this was not on the published CIAM agenda it was obvious that
 the
subject of stakes and pulley towing was going to be discussed following

There had been late proposal from the Swiss backed by various other

banning the stake was a better solution and that F3J would not loses

For those able to get out and practice it gives you something to think
about. Quite a few fliers have already come to realise that in windy

RE: [FAIsoaring] and [RCSE] F3J Great Rule!

2001-03-27 Thread Ken Fox

Hi everyone,

I have to say this has been a delightful to see such a
prolific number of email messages coming on the changes to the F3j rules
following the unfortunate recent fatally where someone was killed by a stake
from towing system.

I would like to provide everyone with some food for thought
on this matter as I believe this whole issue has been dealt with excessive
haste!!!.

Let's consider what is most important for the sport /hobby
/ addiction???

Firstly no matter what we do to change the rules we still
participate in a potentially dangerous hobby or whatever.
If some was ever to be hit with a model the same
consequences would be more than likely.

Here are some questions you ALL need to answer if want to
address our future:

1. Is the use of a hand tow system REALLY the most important issue for
F3J in the future

2. Does is still meet the objectives that were originally considered to
be important when the concept was first proposed and then adopted , and
will it still continue to meet those objectives in the future having
particular regard to the most recent changes etc.

3. Will competitor and /or participator safety really be improved by
the most recent changes

4. Should we not consider a standardized launch procedure for all
soaring events and say adopt the system for electric winches as per the F3B
rules?.

5. Should we now consider only the use of Braided nylon so that cuts
line breaks do potentially harm people as often as they have in the
past?

6. Should we now give consideration to those clubs /countries / teams
that do not have the luxury of have large numbers of people available to act
as helpers / tow - persons in running F3J events and / or competing because
of these limitations. Let's now taken this opportunity to consider some
changes that will allow for greater participation in this hobby / sport
which would be of greater benefit to everyone

LET'S THINK ABOUT THE BIG PICTURE AND START THINKING ABOUT
WANT WE WANT FOR THE LONGER TERM AND NOT BE SHORT-SIGHTED .

WHAT IS OUR VISION FOR THIS HOBBY / SPORT ??

These are my thoughts , please don't take any offence with
my comments, but I want everyone to start thinking more about it .

[RCSE] Mad cows eliminate the steak from soaring

2001-03-27 Thread mikel

OK, so we have a big uproar about what sounds like a safety rule change
in F3B/J for hand towing.

The CIAM is mostly european. I'm sure Terry Edmonds was at the meeting
and he will report back. Terry did as the AMA district reps for FAI
soaring for input on the rules changes that were on the agenda. There
is an orderly process for adopting rules changes. The one exception is
the addition of safety rules. These take effect immediately. If this is
what has been done, then we have to live with it.

I'm sure there will be some recycle. One-man tow appeared, then got
dropped partly because of safety concerns. All the national reps will
probably get an earful from the competitors when they get back. All we
can hope for is for common sense to prevail before the team selections
and next WC.

While everyone thinks of these things as soaring contests, the truth is
they are man on man. This means that they start out as a launching
contest. Those who thought they could turn the simple, low cost BARCS
format into a WC class must have failed history class. If it has WC
status, it will not end up simple or low cost.

For those out there who are thinking of just sticking with thier tried
and true, this is the way we do it in our part of the country, AMA
contest. Take another look at F3b. Sure you'll find old timers out
there who think F3b guys are a bunch of stuck up you know whats. If you
look at the F3b contests we do have, you will find a whole bunch of
other guys who weren't around when F3b rules were developing. The rules
have been pretty stable. The biggest recent changes were making the
duration task 10 minutes. All the equipment you need is available if
you look.

For count up rounds that start with something like :10 or :15, are you
opting to javelin launch or can you DLG light enough for a short task like
that?

Where I get my pictures developed (Kodak afiliated drug store)
there is box on the development envelope that says Photo CD
It costs about 9.00 for 36 pictures, and you get a CD with the
 pictures all on it.

 The quality is very good:
 The Image at:http://www.rasdoc.com/pictures/Dad_And_Solar.JPG (676K) is a
good example, it was originally larger, but it has been cropped.

Yes, that works well. Highly recommended for those who'd
rather be buying planes and stuff :)

It has some disadvantages: no web movies, and you can't preview
your pictures at the field with your friends ... or delete those
pictures with your thumb in the way.

Either way, I'd like to see everyone's pictures :)

[RCSE] F5J Electric contest

2001-03-27 Thread Dave Wenzlick

As an FYI,

The club that hosts the Southwest Classic glider contest in Phoenix every year
is adding a different event to our schedule this October.

The First F5J Electric Soaring World Championships

This October 26-28 2001 the Central Arizona Soaring League will be presenting a
contest which we hope will become the first of many events like it. It will be
an electric, climb and glide, man-on-man, thermal duration type event with three
electric powered classes. We are using the nomenclature of F5J since this is
what we eventually hope it will become if FAI incorporates it down the road.
There is no recognized F5J class at this time. We are blending the F3J format,
with electric powered gliders. No tow men or loose stakes needed here. Many of
the rules are similar to F3J, but adapted to electric powered sailplanes.

To be fair to all, we are not accepting entries postmarked before May 1, 2001.
We can only accept 90 entries total (30 entries per class) and a pilot can only
enter 2 of the 3 classes because of the quick turnaround between classes.

Entries, rules, classes, schedules, etc. may be found at the web site below. We
will be flying multiple rounds over 3 days with Sunday being reserved for the
fly-offs of the top ten pilots in each class. The event will be at the same
Schnepf Farms Campground where we hold the Southwest Classic in February. Plenty
of room and beautiful facilities.
The event is being sponsored by CASL, Sailplane and Electric Magazine and
Aero-Model Inc. and feature have many vendor booths, a big raffle on Sunday, BBQ
dinner Saturday night and more.

Please visit our web site for more info and entry forms:

[RCSE] FOR SALE

2001-03-27 Thread Robert Ritschel

1) 1/3.75 Discus 'A' by Krause of Germany. This is a very complete 4-meter
scale glider kit which includes a gleaming white gel-coated fuse and cockpit
tray w/ molded instrument panel. The canopy is slightly blue tinted like the
1:1. The triple-tapered wings and stab are factory sheeted w/ thick obeche
skins, the rudder is also sheeted in lighter obeche. The spoilers are
factory installed and ailerons/elevator pre-routered. The hardware included
is complete and features a stout, *round* wing joiner. Krause has always
been known for producing one of the two or three best Discus' in any scale.
This bird thermals from a flat field like a homesick angel and 'shreds' on
the slope. My kit is absolutely NIB minus the leading edge stock for the
wings. Priced to sell at $495 + shipping or pick-up in So. CA. Dymond
Modelsport is selling 'em for $999 (for comparison sake).

2) Pixel 60" pitcheron sloper by Airtech of France. This is the spiritual
successor to the VS Sailplanes Vmax and Rotor. The V-tailed Pixel features
an SD7003 wing profile and all-molded construction. The kit I'm offering is
white with red undersides and includes a complete hardware package with
pitcheron actuators. The Pixel is a very fast and agile sloper with a
roll rate that has to be seen to be believed! I have one left at $235
includes UPS 'ground' delivery to the lower 48 states.

3) New: Multiplex IPD 7-channel Rx with xtal on CH51. $67 includes priority
mail to the lower 48 states.

Re: [RCSE] Plane Cases found at Boing Surplus store!!!! **ALERT**

2001-03-27 Thread Steven Meyer

Wow! I hope they bring the surplus store when they move to
Chicago. Otherwise can I buy that on the web? Little too far. I would
never make it in time.

Group,

I took a trip to the Boeing Surplus store and found 9 cases that look to be
great for putting larger planes in for storage or transport!

Specs:

64x23x6.5 inches outside
Aluminum frame with yellow plastic sides (looks like coroplast)
recessed handles at both ends
2 recessed wheels at one end
6 recessed twist type latches for holding the lid on.
inside lid is foam (spongy rubber foam)
Inside box is very dense epp foam cut out for what the box was used for.

All this for 35 bucks. Even though I don't currently have a use for it. I
could not pass it up. Maybe use it for my Allegro once it it built. If you
want one, there are 8 left. They are located inside along the far wall as you
walk in the main entrance.

Ron,

Sorry I missed it. Thought I had added it. These late nights are killers.

For those interested in the Flywheel winch take a look at the picture I
have. Sorry the resolution is not better, but it is a VERY old photo.
