Re: [RCSE] IHLGF Question

2001-06-07 Thread ScrollSander

Hi Marta, Glenn,

At the IHLGF some people were talking of classes, mainlybecause they wanted
some sort of separation due to performance. Some thought about opening the
wingspan up, much like the original contests, while others were trhinking of
1 meter ships. Those talking 1 meter like the convenience but quickly
talked about how they would have their own design problems for performance.
I will be trying a new Micro with the techniques I learned.

I don't know if anyone has brought this up or if it's
been covered but is there a possibility of having
different classes at the IHLGF? One from DLG and one
for JLGs? This way the javelin style will still live,
and all of those planes people own won't go to waste.
Just a thought. I bet you would see the big dogs fly
 both classes. Thanks

[RCSE] raffles - thank you

2001-06-07 Thread David A. Enete

I just wanted to say thank you to companies that support raffles or
other give-aways at soaring events (including trophies, or other
support).

I had an opportunity to win several items in the Mid-South raffle
last year and they all led to sales / good advertising for those who
supplied the prizes (won a tx battery, bought a receiver and from the
donor; won a tape-on skeg, bought 3 more during the year; won a radio
discount, became a fairly loyal user of that brand; won a
micro-torch, bought more accessories from that vendor while at the
show).

Anyhow, you guys put the icing on the cake at competitions / events
and get my business many times over.

- David
[EMAIL PROTECTED]

PS - I did also send e-mail thank you letters to several other
companies that provided prizes...that I did not win. Just to say
thanks for supporting the activity.

Re: [RCSE] Servos

2001-06-07 Thread Karlton Spindle

Not all quite true the Cockpit Digi Servo $45.00. That's less then some
ANALOG servos ;) Due out in a few weeks.

$270for 6 DIGITAL servos
$750for a molded plane
$510.00for a Profi 3030 and IPD receiver (can handle 99 planes)
$1,530.00 Total using your logic you would have to divide the cost of the
radio by 98 more planes so the radio is $5.20 per plane a real bargain!

So revised
$270.00 for 6 digital servos
$750.00 for the plane
$5.20 Amortized cost of the radio over 99 planes
$1,025.20 for a top of the line set up.

Calling the local contractor I found getting a new septic tank installed is
$4K that's 3K more then a new plane the choice is yours, fly or get off the
pot Perry. VBG

I too must say that the service from Karlton has been terrific. Just
recently I ordered a CockpitMaster/Pico transmitter combo from Multiplex
USA. When the product arrived (at the promised time) the transmitter battery
was missing. I e-mailed Karlton about the situation and told him he could
send the battery at a later date. Until the battery arrived I figured I
would just use a joystick. Instead, a battery was sent to me overnight so
that I could use the simulator.

Great service and a great product at a terrific price. What more could you
want?

Thanks Karlton!

FW: [RCSE] DLG always rolls on launch...HELP before I destroy it!

When this happened to me, the pull-pulls for my rudder were not tight
enough. The high velocity of the throw would blow the rudder back resulting
in a sickeningly graceful rainbow arch that was terminal. Sometimes I could
pull out at the last second, sometimes not. Tightened the pull-pulls and
the issue went away.

Re: [RCSE] Gyro Question

2001-06-07 Thread Brett Jaffee

If you really wanted to, you could probably do it. I believe Hobbico makes a gyro
with 2 inputs and outputs, so it can be used for dual surfaces, like elevons or
v-tails. It's probably too heavy for HLG, though.

ScrollSander wrote:

 Hi Al,

Many people talked about that at the contest. The answer is they don't.
BTW, while V-tails look great, more and more HLGs are going for regular
tails, in the same fashion as F3B, etc.

Perhaps even BlueDarter aircraft will have a ship without a V-tail soon.

Re: [RCSE] Gyro Question

2001-06-07 Thread Dick Barker

The quickest and cheapest solution might be an external V tail
mixer. Then put the gyro between the rudder channel (aileron really)
and the external mixer. Thermal-Gromit Works and others have small
electronic mixers that are very inexpensive. http://www.tgworks.com/

[RCSE] 12v portable power?

2001-06-07 Thread Patrick Sloan

Group,

I got an advertisement in the mail yesterday that listed a 12v power supply
with inverter for $79.00. It looks like a pretty good unit for 80 bucks. Is
this a good deal for portable power?

This is the site where the local (Renton, WA) add lists the price as $79.99.

http://www.cumminstools.com/tap/tools/3090.html

This is the manufactures web site with the specs

http://www.centuryonline.net/catalogue/catalogue.asp?productID=2catagoryID=11modelID=50

I just got off the phone with the cumminstools sales people and they confirm
the unit is the pbip-99. It is suppose to have 2 17ah 12 batteries which
should be a great power source out in the field.

So what do you all think?

Subject: Edgar Weisman now flying the big thermals in the sky.
  June's club contest canceled.

On Tuesday morning, 6/5/01, Edgar Weisman passed on while jogging.
All efforts to revive him at the scene were unsuccessful.

We have lost a dear friend and strong supporter of TOSS. For many
years, Edgar has been a key member of our club. He has served as
president, vice-president, contest director, field finder, instructor,
mentor, competitor, and teacher. We owe much of what TOSS is today to
Edgar and his actions. Besides being a leader in the club, he got us
our
Redwood School and Paramount Ranch fields at which we fly today. He was
an instructor and mentor for many current and past club members. Has
represented TOSS at SC2, the TRIAD and BUBW (RES) contests for as long
as
I can remember. Edgar, Myles Moran and others started a highly
successful
program at Redwood School teaching kids how to build model airplanes and
demonstrating R/C sailplane flight. His dedication to our hobby was
demonstrated by hauling out winches to the field every Sunday. Or
better
yet, was to see his amazing collection of model aircraft in his
  workshop/garage.

There will be a 10:00 AM memorial service for Edgar at Mt. Sinai on
Sunday 6/10. We will be gathering at the field at 8:30 AM to car pool
/caravan to the service. If you wish to attend, please meet us at the
field. Maps and additional details will be provided at the field.

  Our condolences for his family.

We will dearly miss you Edgar. Happy flying and may the thermal gods be
  with you.
