2001-10-29 Thread John Derstine

Fly where the lift is, a do what is necessary to capitalize on it. restated
once more. thanks.
Some how this thread has seemed to wander away from what people were
actually saying with regards to coordination in thermal turns. Coordinated
turns are a must in thermal flying. All too often I see R/C pilots couple
rudder to aileron electronically and call that a coordinated turn.
I never advocated skidding around with rudder to keep the wings flat, but
turning efficiently in a given thermal. In order to stay centered, and
coordinated, in a thermal when flying a particular sailplane or thermal,
cross controlling is sometimes required, this does not mean that you are
flying uncoordinated all the time, skidding around the sky. Good pilots use
their left thumb a lot.
Compared to a full scale, a model's smaller size allows them much more
leeway when thermaling. I talk of flying at scale R/C altitudes now, of 1500
to 2500 feet. The thermals are bigger, both relatively and physically than
at 600-900 feet. When flying TD ships at the boundary layer altitudes that
is another story. I have an article on the Scale Soaring page by Wayne
Angivine about this phenomena if anyone wants to read it. Under tech tips.

Good full-scale practice, once centered in the thermal, is to simply check
whether the thermal has a much faster core by making tighter coordinated
turns (obviously with steeper bank angle) for a couple of turns and see if

Re: [RCSE] Bagging 101

2001-10-29 Thread Bill Harris

I got the pump surplus about 20 years ago. The pump body is mounted on a
steel plate and a 1/2hp electric motor drives the pump via a flex coupling.

Your best bet would be to go to an air conditioning supply house and get one
of the pumps they use to evacuate A/C systems. Those pumps are designed to
pull a good vacuum and run all day and they would cost _much_ less than a
pump from a laboratory supply company.

[RCSE] Perfect Soaring Weekend

2001-10-29 Thread Bill Kuhl

After lousy weather the middle of last week, we had great soaring weather
this weekend in Minnesota. Saturday the winds were light, and thermals were
plentiful. It is so neat to be able to catch a thermal at 25 feet and work
it up slowly with very little drift. Almost every throw you could hit some
thermal lift.

Sunday the wind was up, perfect slope flying weather. The Kestrel showed
gusts up to 30 mph but it felt like 50 mph. This was the first time I had
flown an aileron 2-meter on a big slope. It was a hoot to say the least.
Flying on a big slope, the dips in the wind speed don't really make a
difference, there is always lift.

Almost makes going to work on Monday bearable after a good weekend of
soaring.

Re: [RCSE] Textured surface on carbon laminate

2001-10-29 Thread Harley Michaelis

Andy. . .I have used a lot of this stuff in spar making. It does bond pretty
well, but compression stresses can pop it loose. You really need to wrap the
spar assembly with Kevlar thread or unwaxed dental floss to help assure no
separation will take place. Such wraps, however, are rougher than the
texture in the CF and thin balsa caps applied with a light coat of epoxy and
sanded smooth are the easy fix. Of course, all these things need to be sized
to fit accurately in the core or whatever other kind of construction is
involved.

I bought some unidirectional carbon laminate strips for my upcoming Bird
of
Time project, and was surprised to see the fabric weave texture on them -
I
thought they'd sent the wrong items... the response from CST is below. I
still think it seems odd - I was expecting to just lightly sand the
surface
and clean with alcohol to prep for laminating to the wood spar. Is a
texture formed by excess resin really the best situation? Seems like it
will be more difficult to get it perfectly clean before gluing...

We texture the surfaces of our carbon laminates so you will not have to
sand them. The carbon fibers are unidirectional. The surface texture is
done during the curing process with Teflon Coated Glass that is removed
after the carbon is cured. The result is the epoxy bleeds into the
fabric
texture and cures on the surface with the weave of the TCG. This process
improves your bond with the carbon since the bondable surface area is
 increased.

I hope this answers your questions. Please feel free to inquire anytime
 you have questions or concerns.

I think the jist of it is, it is easier to moniter and keep vehicle traffic moving along the dam,
where as either law enforcement or the dam operators may not have the man power to observe foot traffic, and my self personally, I feel that as nice a place as it is to fly, it may be unwise to fly r/c aircraft around a dam or other structure like that. people nerves are on edge and so people might percive some even as simple as an r/c aircraft as a threat. This may for the time being be on of the sacrifices that we all have to make at a time like this.

Dudes,

Just curious if any of you are experiencing any closures of slope sites at
Dam's. We were ordered, by Corps of Engineer personnel, to refrain from
flying the front side of Percy Priest Dam in Nashville on Saturday. Of
course it was one of the few Saturday's that we had a perfect NW +15 mph
wind. The really strange thing is they stated that is was closed to foot
traffic on the front side (grassy side) due to security reasons related to
the 9/11 incident. However they have not stopped the auto/truck traffic
that rolls right along on the top of the dam. Sure doesn't make any sense
to me and they are really cramping my pursuit of happiness rights. So
anyone else running into this?? Suggestions as to how and who to complain
too??

BTW we can still fly the water side of the dam...

Re: [RCSE] Dam Site Closures

2001-10-29 Thread Joe G

Mark,

I agree. But that is not the case. We can still fly on the lake side (I
flew at lunch today in fact). The fishermen are still allowed to fish and
they are walking or boating the whole length of the dam. I just feel that
this is a situation that in which the terroists are winning by changing our
lifestyle. If the dam was closed to ALL traffic I wouldn't be saying a word
about it, but it isn't. As far as I can tell the only people affected are
the slope heads, the kite flyers, the dog walkers, and the gay guys that
used the park below the dam as a meeting place. Am I confused or in error to
think that this is just wrong?

Joe

I think the jist of it is, it is easier to moniter and keep vehicle
traffic moving along the dam,
where as either law enforcement or the dam operators may not have the man
power to observe foot traffic, and my self personally, I feel that as nice a
place as it is to fly, it may be unwise to fly r/c aircraft around a dam or
other structure like that. people nerves are on edge and so people might
percive some even as simple as an r/c aircraft as a threat. This may for the
time being be on of the sacrifices that we all have to make at a time like
this.
