RE: [RCSE] elevator servo?

2002-02-20 Thread Ed Franz

The only servo I have had fail was a Hitec HS 55, cost me a DLG. Two or
three other guys around here had them fail about the same time. Maybe
just a bad batch.

Nathan,

Could you elaborate more as to what your failures were and what you felt
caused them? I would be interested in how many were caused by either
crashes or just plain hard landings at some of the rougher sites you guys
fly at like Vincent and Parker. Also, how many just failed under normal
use? I am just curious, not trying to raise doubt in your claim.

8 Hitec 225MG's (My Hades ate them for lunch)
 6 Hitec 85MG's
5 Hitec 81 (some MG's not sure how many)
 3 Hitec 80's
 2 HD-60's (a rare HLG experiment)
 1 JR 241 (32 electric Stinger)

I have successfully returned all the Hitec to Poway for FREE repair and/or
replacement, a recent volz victim is being sent out for $20 repair soon.
2
of the Hitec's may not have failed, but the battery fire concerned me so I
sent them in for repair anyway.

The JR didn't work right out of the box, it's still sitting on my bench.

I currently use Multiplex mvC2's, 3BB's, JR 341/351 and 368 digitals in my
 F3F racers. No problems, ever.

I use Hitec 85MG's and JR341's in my 60 slopers, and only Hitec's in my
extensive foamie collection. Hitec's are great servos, used
appropriately,
though their new digital wing servo looks VERY enticing.

RE: [RCSE] RE: Servo Performance Survey

2002-02-20 Thread Nathan Woods

I am just curious, not trying to raise doubt in your claim.

Well then, let's set things straight:

1. Unless it's another SWC update, virtually every post on RCSE is an
editorial style post. ie, an opinion.

2. In my opinion, servo failure is when a servo breaks, as in, ceases to
work effectively for the task to which it was intended.

Stripping gears is not a big deal. Especially with Hitec's because the gear
sets are readily available at any hobby shop. This is not a failure

Combat was a successful profit center for Hitec from 1997 to 2001. They
sold tens of thousands of HS-85's to combat pilots. I say it is normal
use, within certain proper expectations. I almost always used MG's, and
always used Kimbrouogh servo savers. I rarely had a stripped gear from
combat, and if I did, I just paid the $3 for a gear set and went on my merry
way. This is *not* a failure.

Seized motors, bad solders, impossible centering, and generally weak
construction that results in normal handling causing damage are failures.

Wing servos that are not strong enough to survive the loads put on them by
our typical control surfaces (aileron flaps) are failures.

Servos that don't hold up to crash landing are not failures. Servos that
break when pulling the wing from the wing bag are failures.

and so forth and so on, in my opinion.

For the record. Mr. B Yen is incorrect in his comments re the Photon.
The Photon is currently $ 400 for a complete airframe, and $ 300 for an
unfinished model. The wing is built in the old eastern block and is hi
tech composite, similar to a Simply the Best or Graphite. I build the
rest of the model. hopefully, I will have Pods, and tail groups within
the next 2 months and at then point, I will offer ARF's at a reduced
price. A limited number of Covered flapped wings are are currently
available for $ 180. Covered unflapped wings are $ 165.

Good golly no. No horror stories here. I've only had ONE failure in 23
years! I consider that Great.

Notice I didn't mention the servos that have been broken in combat, crashes,
etc... Those cases were my fault. Only normal usage failures are of interest
here.

OK, the race is saved, thanks to several who have stepped
up to help Gavin Botha. Craig Toutolmin will CD, Scott Hewett is building a
pilot stand and Cliff Lindgren is supplying a porto-potty. The SoCal gang
are supplying lights and poles. I will do the entry fees and channel
conflicts while Gavin will still be taking care
of our campsite and many other details. Nathan has kindly agreed to do a
post on Sloperacing.com, check it out for further details and sponsors.

This is the biggest unlimited race in the country. It is
possible that the SoCal Manly Pilots Assn. will dare to show up to challenge
the Shell Ridge Sissy boys...but I doubt it somehow. There will be trophies
(not trophy wives) or plaques for the first 3 pilots. Best wreck gets $100.

The first 30 checks I receive will be confirmed entries,
after that I will create a waiting list, holding your check till after the
race, so if a space later becomes available I will deposit your check. From
what I hear checks should be sent ASAP. The $30 fee covers the workers
raffle,
workers food, pilot stand materials, porto-potty and trophies (trophy wives
will be a lot extra).

Workers (limited to 20) who volunteer their time will
be eligible to enter a raffle for an Acacia II sponsored by F3X, but cannot
also be pilots.

Great odds for a great plane. Many volunteers are needed to run this event
properly and the fees will be used to pay for raffle prizes and to cover
expenses.

Please email me if u want to volunteer.

To enter the race, please mail me your $30 entry fee
plus;
1. Your AMA #, (remember to bring your card to the event).
2.Your frequency and backup frequency numbers;
3.Your email address.

Send it to 941 Walnut Avenue, Walnut Creek CA94598.

you'll find it under: New Gliders

Also check under: New Electronics, motors, etc. the Actro electro

Very compact, light weight but with a tremendous torque, thus avoiding
the use
of a gearbox when a large size prop is needed.
The largest motor of the series: 40-5 will swing a 20x10 size prop and
able to
easily fly a 18 Lbs airplane.
It's currently being used in Europe to perform electro aero-towing
